Council Meeting Notes from Jan 8UNOFFICIAL from the scratch pad of the editor...

GK Bill Richards called the meeting to order at 7:30PM; 34 members attending. We adjourned at 9:22PM. Jim Broadhurst read the minutes, which were accepted.

CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE: Fr. JohnFr. John expanded on some points of the recent papal encyclical. Here are some quotes from Fr. John's talk:

• We are a community, always related to others, interdependent all on each other.

• The Holy Spirit links us to Jesus and to each other, and that link is to the Jesus of the past and to that same Jesus in the present. The Gospel story is our story, here now in the present.

• We are called to be the light to each other, just as at the Easter Vigil Mass, when the Easter flame is passed candle by candle, person by person, from one to the other. We are a community. Thank God for God!

Bills and Communications: GK Bill RichardsBill thanked all the people who worked during the Christmas Fund and the Christmas dinner that served 200. The council received “Thank You's” from seminarians for our gift cards, from Pauline Gorgol for the service to her familyduring the funeral of Mike Gorgol, from Dave Thompson for the support shownby the council for the Christmas dinner, and from the Bishop Sheen Foundation that distributes prayer books to troops.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:Treasurer Reports read and accepted:Bob and Charlie gave their reports. Last year, the council gave $119,000 in charity; in 2014, our budget is for $144,000. See the notice of motion at the end of this newsletter. We will be voting on the budget at the Feb meeting. Our membership stands at 255; although we had 16 additions in the year, we also had some members dropping out, and unfortunately, we also had deaths.

Troop Support: Paul St.AmandPackages continue to be sent out. The total for 2013 was 27 boxes and 439 pounds. We have not received any reply from various contacts in the last three months; nevertheless, we will continue our support.

Newsletter: - Paul St.AmandA request was made to me to allow the newsletter to expand in pages when necessary. I have kept it to 8 pages of news, to keep the stamp cost of mailing the paper copies low. The council agreed to endorse extra pages when needed; the extra cost in mailing and printing would be about $150 per year; electronic versions would not be affected. Let me know if you think the newsletter gets too long! Email me. << Click on link.

Membership: Bill RichardsWe had a “guest” from Florida attending the meeting, who will be joining the council. Brother David Wilson. Welcome! He was impressed with the work ofour council. Later in the meeting, he volunteered to “check out” our float for road worthiness. (Now, that's “stepping up” and joining right in. - ed)

Welcome, David Wilson!

Membership: Bill Richards (continued) Welcome three new smiling, happy 1st Degree members! (OK, no one smiles for a mug shot -ed.)

On Monday, December 23, 2013 a 1st degreeexemplification was presented at the St Elizabeth SetonChurch Hall, 190 Meetinghouse Road, Bedford, NH. Theceremony began at 7:00PM and achieving their firstdegree were Dr. Josef Kish, Norman Comeau, and JohnBement. Attending as spectators were Ron Bourque,Peter Floriddia, and Bill Richards. There was an excellentturnout in candidates as 13 candidates advanced to the1st degree. The degree team led by Captain Chris Bondagain presented an outstanding program and thecandidates were all impressed. The local councilprovided a layout of pastries, soft drinks and coffee for allto enjoy after the ceremony.

The next exemplification is to be held on January 25, 2014 at St Michael Church in Exeter. It will be a dual exemplification with a 2nd and a 3rd degree being conferred on the same day. The 2nd degree will begin at 10:30am. There will be a free will donation lunch presented at 12:00 noon by council 2179. The 3rd degree will then start at 1:15pm with the arrival of the candidates in the antechamber. (There is mass available at 4:00pm after the 3rd degree ceremony, for those who wish to remain and attend.) I expect that we will car pool from the council hall by 9:15am on Saturday morning, January 25th. A departure time for those candidates wishing to attend only the 3rd degree ceremony will be published at a later date, once the full compliment of attending candidates has been established. As usual all are welcome to attend the ceremony as spectators. (This would be a good opportunity for all members to review the lessons of these two degrees. How long has it been since you attended a degree? -ed)

(Note: Dr. Kish and his wife Dr. Mary Ellen Moore operate “Moore-Kish Chiropractic” in Methuen. Joe is now an advertiser in our newsletter (see last page); so, if you get bent out of shape, go see them! -ed)

Texas Hold-Em: Larry BelairThe final report for Texas Hold Em operations for 2013 finished on a high note. Our last event was better than expected, wiping out a small shortfall and pushing the net to the Council for 2013 to $61,200, which is $2,500 above our budgeted amount.

The nature of our involvement has changed to the point where much less work is required of the volunteers. I have reduced the number of volunteers to 2 per shift. We have gained a lot of money for very little effort, and almost none at the Council level. Bless those volunteers! (Also, Larry would really like to turn over operations to some new blood. Who wants to take over from him? - ed.)

Bingo Report: Ron BourqueRon reported that the year 2013 total for Bingo was a net profit to the council of $137,320. Many thanks to Paul Simard, Lou Stella, and all the volunteers who attend to bingo every Wednesday and Friday, year round!

Relay for Life: - Ralph MieleThe kick off meeting for the Relay for Life event will be at 6:00PM in our council hall. This year, Kiwanis member John Tripp will be the chairman. However, long-time past chairman Ralph Miele will remain as our KofC contact into the event.

New Business: The Trustees presented new items; all were voted upon and approved..• $500 advance to Ralph Miele, for Relay-for-Life “seed money”• $100 to Officer Marchand to support Special Olympics of NH and the “Penguin Plunge” (Brrrrr! -ed)• $200 to help with medical expenses for a UNH student, badly injured in a chemistry class. “Mitch Fund.”• $100 gift certificate to Tuscan Kitchen for Karen Broscoe, owner of ESCO Awards in Salem. Karen has made

name plates for our council's Deceased Members plaque for over six years, all free of charge.• $100 to support Fr. Tom Fitzpatrick's Testimonial “pot luck” dinner, to be held Feb 9. (See parish bulletin.)

Dave Thompson presented the council with cash and checks given to him by recipients of the Christmas Dinner. Several people were so grateful for the chance to come together and share a meal, that they donated to us. Dave proposed that we give $75 to the Salem Christmas Fund and the remainder $75 to the Christian Service Fund.

District Deputy Report: Dick Collopy“Greetings from the State Deputy” said Dick Collopy. Remember the goal of “one new member a month” Dick reported that statewide in NH since 2007, despite our recruiting new members, there has been a net decrease of 480 members, through either suspensions of inactive Knights or by deaths.

Dick wants to have “Retention Committees” in each of his councils. It would not be a major job to just give a call to a member and ask, “Hey, how you doing?” If we touch base with members, we could keep them in the council and maybe encourage them to become more active.

Good of the OrderKeep in your Prayers:This email alert was sent out on Friday, Jan 10, at the request of GK Bill Richards.Gert Bamford, wife of PGK Wil Bamford, has been hospitalized in Derry with symptoms of a stroke. (Wil sent out email that Gert returned home after exams at Parkland. There was no stroke; but, more tests are scheduled to determine why her blood pressure went too high. - ed)

Kathy Faucher, wife of Brother Al Faucher, went into Holy Family Hospital shortly after Christmas. Her condition has worsened. She was moved to the ICU this afternoon, and is now on a respirator; a feeding tube will give her nutrition.

Perhaps not as serious an illness as above, but a good reminder to all to be careful this winter...Brother Bob Bryant, slipped on ice and fell and dislocated his shoulder and fractured his collarbone.

Brother Al Hamel slipped in the Rockingham parking lot, fell on his hip and has a hairline fracture. Al is in pain and is using a walker. (Bob and Al were in the ER at Holy Family at the same time.)

We wish them all well, and let us pray for healing for them and for all in need.

Here we go again: “the Boat discussion”...The Londonderry KofC council wants to borrow our boat / float for use in their local parade. In keeping with council tradition, we immediately went into circular discussions of “What about liability?” “But we did it before!” “What did we do last time?” “Are they going to touch up the paint and fix the loose boards?” “Don't we have a process and guideline for this?”

The consensus (I think we agreed on something. -ed) is that we have no objections, that the liability falls on the person / vehicle / group pulling the float, just as for any trailer. There IS a process written up in the Grand Knight's Handbook that Alan Phair made. Now all we need dois find where the Handbook is. Anyone seen it?

David Wilson volunteered to check out the road worthiness of the float. He is a mechanic!Jim Broadhurst suggested that if and when we find the Handbook, the process be reviewed and posted on the web site, so we all know what it is, and we can avoid these yearly discussions. (But, it's so much fun hearing ourselves talk! - ed)

4

Time to think Baseball!Alan Phair asked about interest this year for the baseball familyouting trip. We had a good time each past year, and we selectedthe July 17 date for the Fisher Cats (Toronto AA team) vs PortlandSeadogs (Red Sox AA team). There will be fireworks! Tickets areonly $10 each. Save the date! Alan also said, “I'd really like to getout of doing this again. Is there anyone who would like to take overthis simple job of handling the tickets?” (silence.)

Knight of the MonthGK Bill Richards presented the January award to Tom Campbell, for his work in getting a new set of clothes for Santa. Santa had worn out his old clothes. Tom bought the new suit well under our budget allocation. Ho! Ho! Ho!

Attendance Prize:

The drawing for $30 was done, and the “winner” would have been PKG Tony Fabrizio. Tony wasn't with us tonight, so the prize will increase to $40 next month. It “pays” to attend the meetings!

4th Degree: The 4th Degree Assembly 641 meets the 3rd Wednesday of the month (except summer) in the council hall.

It's time to pay dues for the 4th. Meeting on Jan 15, to vote on raising the dues from $20 to $25 peryear.

Faithful Comptroller David Kling has indicated that he will be stepping down in June and would like for someone to consider taking over this very important post. He will be happy to assist the Sir Knight taking over, as long as needed. Also, the office of Faithful Captain will need to be filled, as the present Captain is going to declare for the Navigator position, now held by Butch Kealey.

Salem Christmas Fund – Toy DistributionWell, you did it again. Our Council outdid itself onceagain in its support of the Salem Christmas Fund.Every year that the call goes out for help, I know thatour members will be there. As Chairman of theSalem Christmas Fund I can tell you that without thehelp of the Bishop Peterson Council #4442, theChristmas Fund would be hard pressed to survive. Icannot list all the Brother Knights and their familymembers who helped out as there were so many. Many of them took part in up to 8 different

endeavors.

We not only had to pick up & set up tables, wehad to help set up toys, run toy distribution nights, pack up excess toys to start next year, load the toys onto the truck and bring into storage container, pick up tables and return them to St Joseph’s and the Council. That is not counting the other areas that are done behind the scenes by the members Board of Directors, four of whom are Brother Knights. There is the making of the advertisements,

collecting the funds and toys along with purchasing toys to supplement areas where there is a shortage especially for teens.

This year was especially challenging as we not only developed a new web site, phone system, email and on-line donation capabilities, but helped with the Knights Christmas Dinner and also ran a special dinner that raised $1,800 for teen gifts. Just to see the turnout of Knights who showed up in the bad snow storm the evening of Dec 17th for the first night of toy distribution was amazing. We made the decision not to cancel as we had a tight schedule to get everything done and little wiggle room. I can tell you, I was a nervous wreck thinking I would have over 100 families show up that evening to pick out gifts for their kids with little or no volunteers to help. As you know, we help them pick out toys, coats, scarves & gloves along with distributing food & clothing vouchers and free memberships to the Boys & Girls Club. In total, the hours put into this project came to 1,300 hours. We also shop for gifts for area nursing homes including every patient in Salem Haven. In total, although I do not have the final numbers as yet, our combined efforts probably resulted in over 800 people being assisted this Christmas Season. You all should be very proud of your accomplishments.

From the bottom of my heart and from all the members of the Salem ChristmasFund Inc, thank you for your dedication to this project and your willingness to be there when called upon. Sincerely, Alan Phair, Chairman, Salem Christmas Fund Inc.& very proud member of K of C Council #4442.

Pro Life MassOn Wednesday, Jan 22, at Mary, Queenof Peace Church, our council celebrate Mass on the 41st anniversary of Roe vs Wade. All Knights and family members are urged to attend. “Sir Knights” are asked to dress in tux and social baldric (not regalia.)

Lecturer's Reflections – Ron Bourque

This January marks the 41st anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the most unconscionable decision ever rendered by the Supreme Court. Since January22nd, 1973, we’ve had over 55 million abortions reported. That does not count the millions of undocumented ones (For instance, NH does not report its abortions…). We’ve never lost that many lives in all the wars we’ve ever fought.

Many of us have never been involved with abortions in any way. We’ve never been a partner to an abortion decision. None of our children, relatives or friends has ever had one that we know of. We can feel like we’re clean, and theissue has nothing to do with us. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works.

When I started my consulting practice in 1992, I wrote a white paper analyzing our country as a business and sent it to my customers. I looked at parameters like our trade deficit. We’ve had a negative trade balance since right after Roevs. Wade, and it’s bankrupting us. In 2009 (the last time I updated the numbers), it was $764 billion, a pretty sobering number. However, if you add our losses over the years until 2009, the cumulative deficit was $7.5 trillion! It’smuch more today.

This is the greatest exportation of wealth and jobs the world has ever seen. There is no precedent. Since the dawn of civilization, no other society has everdone anything quite this stupid. Just since 2001, we’ve closed 42,400 factoriesand given up over 5.5 million manufacturing jobs. More than 45 million Americans are now living in poverty. If you think things aren’t really bad, go visit Detroit. Unless something changes quickly, many of our cities will look justlike that in the not too distant future. Because we’re exporting so much of our money, we can no longer afford our standard of living. That’s where our phenomenal debt is coming from.

Today, the official national debt stands at $54,577 per person, but it’s getting much worse every minute. That’s the official debt. If we include our obligationsfor Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, the debt mushrooms to over $250,000 per person. How will we ever climb out of this hole? And yet our government continues to over spend and raise the debt ceiling Since 1992, I’ve updated these figures and their associated graphs every few years. The original paper showed we were in trouble, but we got worse with each update. I couldn’t understand how we had managed ourselves so brilliantly for 200 years and gotten so stupid all of a sudden.

After several years of wondering, searching and asking colleagues, finally it hit me. All the trouble seems to have started in the early to mid-70’s, right after Roe vs. Wade. Our trade deficit, our energy crisis, and our sub-prime mortgage crisis (which caused our latest recession that just won’t quit) all originated back then. Could this be just a coincidence? I did some research off and on to disprove my hypothesis. The more research I did, the more correlation I found. If you read the Holy Bible, particularly the Old Testament, you’ll find it’s a very repetitive love story. Things seem to be going along pretty well and we enjoy Our Lord’s bounteous blessings until we start doing something He doesn’t like (e.g., worshiping false gods, etc.). Then He seems to step back and say, “Go ahead, try it your way for a while.” Without His help everything starts going wrong. The first thing we know, the Babylonians are at the gate, and we can’t hold them off. As a last resort, we get down on our knees, say we’re sorry and ask for His help. Often He helps us in such a miraculous way, we can’t possibly think we did it ourselves. Remember Charlton Heston, I mean Moses,

Dinner will be Cranberry Cicken, Garlic Potatoes, green beans with almonds, and Mixed Green Salad.

parting the Red Sea? Even our politicians wouldn’t have the nerve to take credit for something that miraculous.

I began to wonder if the cycle repeats itself even to this day. When we decided it was OK to murder our children in the womb, did He step back and say, “Go ahead, try it your way for a while”? If so, He’s allowing us to destroy ourselves with our own greed.

It bothered me so much, I wrote a book about it, Disturbing Questions – Has God Stopped Blessing America?

On Saturday, January 18th, NH Right To Life will hold its annual March for Life in Concord. Our Knights have always had a great presence there. If you’ve never been, this is your opportunity to show our political leaders that there are still some of us opposed to the wanton murder of unborn children.

One Last Christmas Story (I have to fill up this space at the end of this page. -ed)

When four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the pre-Christmas pressure.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where. When he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.

Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drunk all the cider and hidden the liquor. In his frustration, he accidentally droppedthe cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom.

Just then the doorbell rang, and an irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open, and there stood a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa! Isn't this a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?'

And thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree. Not very many people know this.10

From Supreme. A word about Insurance

Insurance check-up for 2014

Where did 2013 go? It seems like it was summer yesterday and Easter was last week.

I hope you and your family had a great finish to 2013. Now, the first quarter of 2014 is speeding by.

Hopefully, you’ve established a few goals for this year. I’ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions. First, write them down. It’s not too late if you haven’t already done this. Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often. Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it. I don’t know exactly how this works, but I’ve heard stories of the success this simple task can bring. Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television, you’re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down.

Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances. I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I should be among the first you sit with. Schedule some time to visit with me, your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, and I’ll provide an “insurance check-up” (at no cost!) that will quickly identify any gaps in your family’s lifeinsurance program. And you’ll want to fill those gaps now, not later. Unlike many other products, you don’t just need money to obtain life insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change.

Did I mention my check-up is free of charge? When was the last time you received something for free that could be providing value to you and your family for generations? Call me today.

Not all Thieves are Stupid

Do you have a GPS in your car?

Someone had their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and specially allotted to football fans.

Things stolen from the car included a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been prominently mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been ransacked and just about everything worth anything hadbeen stolen. The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain entry to the house.

The thieves knew the owners were at the football game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home address in it... Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know where you live if your GPS were stolen.
