From the desk of the Grand KnightBrothers

I would like to thank you all who have helped me reach the goal of Grand Knight, and I am grateful for the honor you have bestowed upon me.

I am proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus and proud of all those who Generously volunteer their time, talent and money to make an impact on our Catholic faith, as well all of the work within this community to enhance the lives of others.

But remember, I can't achieve this without the help and support from you.

Vivat JesusDavid C Thompson Jr.

Who is Richard Botti, our Outside Guard?“Richie” was born and grew up in “the North End” of Boston. After Boston Tech High School, he joined the Marines and served for six years as a demolition expert. He attendedWentworth Institute for two years for electricalwork, and then worked in heavy construction in Boston.

“Ricardo” played softball in the North End, and there was a woman in the stands who was “always raggin on me.” So he decided toget even... and married her! He and Kathy have three children and six grand kids.

While driving to visit a cousin in Salem in the 1980s, he and Kathy looked around and saw the lower price of housing. They decided to move up; Richie continued to commute to Boston to work, and finally retired about eight years ago. One day his grandson gave him a paper from school and recruited Richie to start driving a school bus. Thus began a second career that continues today! He maintains his loyalty to his buddies back in Boston; he attends a weekly breakfast back in the North End.

So why is Ricardo a “Yankee Fan?” (Check out his car license plate.) Hisdad came to New York from Italy, and the Yankees of that day with Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra had many “pisanos” playing. So it was natural to root for the home team. And when the family moved to Boston, these Yankees “kept the faith.” (But he is not all bad... Richie is a Pats fan! -ed)

What impresses him about the Knights is the fraternity shown. Richard remembers his degrees, when brother Knights came out to support him. He is glad to help out in our charity activities.

Council Meeting Notes – July 12UNOFFICIAL(Taken from notes of the worthy recorder, Norm Comeau)Meeting started at 7:30PM. There were 35 members attending. All officers present except Advocate, Grand Knight, and Jay Cappello, all excused. Minutes of June meeting were accepted.

Chaplain's Message: Fr. TomFr Tom began with a reading from Genesis, 45:4-8, where Joseph (of the many-colored cloak) reveals himself to his brothers who sold him into slavery, saying “Do not be distressed nor angry with yourself that you sold me here, for God sent me here before you to save life....” God has a plan, God runs the universe. We need to get with the program and reach out for new opportunities to grow. Fr. Tom also quoted from the New American Bible, Psalm 32 using less force and more cooperation, mercy and caring to promote the image of Christ. He will instruct us and show us the way to walk.

GK Opening Remarks:DGK Paul St.Amand, filling in for Dave Thompson who was on a vacation, readDave's greeting. (See first page of newsletter. -ed)

“Thank you” correspondence received:·Angel Flight for our $250 donation·Fr. Fee is $700 for a foursome. (YOU pay, not the council!)

Treasurer's Report: Bob FournierBob gave the half-year report on the council finances. Because of the great Bingo returns, we are much ahead of our budget. Bob said we are in a position to add to our already planned donations for this year.

Financial Secretary's Report: Charlie WalshThirteen checks were written last month. Membership remains at 243.

Committee Reports – Mike Banks conducting:

Membership Committee – Bill Richards: No report. (Bill was attending another council”s meeting as the DD. Bill told the council last month that he will not continue asadmissions chairman this year. The council needs someone to volunteer to take his place. The chairman does not recruit every new candidate! He does serve to match new candidates with available degree team schedules. Will YOU volunteer?)

Culture of Life – Dennis Groulx : Dennis Groulx stressed importance of pro-life activities and participation. He also presented his scrap book.

Blood Drive – Butch Kealey: Butch corrected the error in the June newsletter. There were 42 pints collected, not 24! See article below for the results of the July 13 blood drive.

Bingo – Ron Bourque: The results for bingo continue at a record-setting pace. Praise God!

Texas Hold-em – Larry Belair: “The KofC has a place for Texas Holdem!” Gaming has been approved by the town at the former Grand China Restaurant. Waiting for state approval. Grand China will be the site where our council will participate for the 10 nights allowed by the state. The Grand China location might be in operation in the late fall. [The other gaming site on North Broadway may also be opening soon. The council does not anticipate any participation in that site.] State rules limit any charity to only 10 nights total per year regardless of venue; it doesn't make sense to spread those 10 nights over more than one host site.

The council waived the hall rental fee, at Larry's request, to host a meeting for the town's charities where Larry can guide the folks in filling out their required state paperwork. Basically, all charities that were at Rockingham Park's Texas Hold-Em are now “back to square one” with the state. (Larry reminded us that he has no financial interest in any of this, and he is not looking for a job! He is simply glad to help push this forward, to enable the council to restore this source of income for our charitable works. Thanks, Larry, for helping to make this a “go.” -ed)

Relay for Life – Mike Banks: Mike Banks thanked all who filled in for him at the Relay for Life set-up and also to the Gorgol Family who raised $1200 for the cause.

Coats for Kids – Paul St.Amand Thanks to Gene Bryant, who has arranged, with the support of the new SJRS principalMary Croteau, for the school 8th graders to help sort and process our “coats for kids” shipment in early October as a service project for them. And the work will be done in the gym, so that solves my storage problem. – Thanks, Gene!

Tootsie Rolls DriveThere is some confusion about getting final paperwork done with percentages we give to each charity. Gene Bryant will talk with Pete Klecan.

Scholarship/Picnic – Joe Stafford: Help is need to set up for the Council Picnic on Saturday July 29th at 9:00AM. Also, on Sunday, set up continues at 9:00AM.

Sunday July 30th picnic is at 1:00PM and drawing for the 16 scholarship awards at $750 each will be announced.Entertainment to be determined.

Joe has 37 completed applications in; two more are awaiting documentation.

Raffle Tickets – Mike PetrilliMike has started getting stub returns and donations, with $850 so far in.

TAPS (Tuition Assistance for Parochial Students) The deadline for TAPS applications has passed. There are only 5 or 6 applications in.

Old BusinessNotice of Motion – up to $2,000 for Salem Boys and Girls club. For the summer camp-out, to refund to the Boys and Girls Club their expenses incurred. Motion was removed from table and subsequently approved unanimously by the members. (The initial motion was submitted by Mike Schwing.)

New BusinessBoth items were presented by the trustees and were approved by the members: • On behalf of Mike Petrilli, requested $200 for ad for the Greater Lawrence Community Boating Program.• On behalf of Wes Suszek, request to waive the hall fee for a charitable event (new Deacon ordination.)

Don Simmons requested $1,000, already in budget, to be moved one month for the Pregnancy Care Center in Haverhill.

Notice of MotionDon Simmons, as trustee, presented a notice of motion from Don Gagne for up to $20,000 for capital improvements for the Parish. These would include repairs to the parking lot near Julie Hall among other items. There is some unspent money in the budget for parish capital improvements. (In the future, all notices of motion are to be submitted to the newsletter editor in writing / email, so that I have the details to present to the membership for their understanding. -ed)

Gene Bryant presented a notice of motion for up to $18,300:1) The purchase of two portable/adjustable/expandable aluminum wheelchair ramps approximately 30 feet in length capable of at least a 36+ inch lift with all necessary hardware, the first to be installed at Skip Torisi's house at 21 Martin Avenue – not to exceed $9,800.2) The purchase of at least 130 folding chairs, similar to what we now use for many events, and 15 blow-mold 30"X96" folding tables, identical to those now in use in our Council home, among other places -- and the necessary wheeled carriers for the chairs -- -- to replace the many rusty 40+ year old steel chairs and their unwieldy massive carriers that must go -- the new tables will allow the final retirement of the last remaining old folding tables and hopefully keep a good supply available for our many uses, especially the Christmas Fund – not to exceed $5500.3) The sponsorship of a Warrior to Lourdes, for the 60th Annual Pilgrimage in May 2018, an event sponsored by Supreme KofC and the Archdiocese of the Military (chaplain's service) – (I had originally intended to offer this for the 2018Council budget, but as I worked on the process I realized all the paperwork and money had to be in to Supreme before the first of the year -- I refer you to the serendipitous article in this month's Columbia magazine for more detail) – $3,000.(Thank you, Gene, for a clearly written submission of what this motion entails. -ed)

District Deputy Report – Bill Richards(by email for the newsletter...)Glenn Camley, our new State Deputy extends his best wishes to the council and would like to encourage you to even greater efforts in the upcoming fraternal year.

Corporation Update: Mike PetrilliTree stumps were removed from parking lot.Kitchen pots and pans are secured, to prevent unauthorized use (and the failure of clean-up after by some renters.)No meeting in August.Mike and Mike (Petrilli and Banks) are researching installing security cameras in the hall. (According to the Lease, the landlord [corporation] may make capital improvements to the hall that it deems necessary and then bill the tenant [council]. It would seem prudent that in the case of any major improvements and large expenses, that the corporation firstbring up the proposal to the council to gather a “sense of the meeting.” -ed)

Fourth Degree Report – Bill Richards

The Fourth Degree Exemplification was presented at St Thomas Aquinas Church in Derry, NH, on Saturday, July 15, 2017, where 32 new Sir Knights were inducted. One of the new Sir Knights was Sir Knight Paul David from council 4442. There were three spectators from the council present, Chanel Simard, Dennis Groulx, and Bill Richards to witness his advancement into the 4th degree.

The state degree team did an excellent job in presenting the exemplification and the meals throughout the day, presented by the local assembly, were excellent.

Our local Assembly 0641 was well represented in the exemplification as six new members were initiated into the assemblyfrom councils in Salem, Windham, and Hampstead. There were 7 new members initiated from councils in Massachusetts. One of those new knights was Robert Owaida who had advanced to the 3rd degree while a member of council 4442 and then transferred to a council in Massachusetts.

On Thursday, June 29, 2017 the Knights of Columbus, Council 4442 of Salem, NH sponsored a bingo for the hospitalized veterans at the medical center in Manchester,NH. Since many of the Knights were unavailable, I called upon the AMVETS of Post 2 to assist us. There were fourvolunteers and three of their wives, for a total of seven volunteers. We drove a total of 190 miles and volunteereda total of 23 hours.

As well as supplying the soda and crackers, an additional $100.00 was used to reward the winners of each game. There were 11 patients who played. A total of 37 games, for $2.00 per game were played. Then a final ‘cover-all’ was played for the remaining $26.00.

The volunteers were: Dennis Groulx (Knights of Columbus) –Dennis & Gail Coleman (Knights of Columbus & AMVETS)Terry & Theresa Armstrong (AMVETS) – Enrico & Patricia Casaletto (Knights of Columbus & AMVETS)

I have been attempting to have both the AMVETS and the Knights of Columbus participate in all the scheduled functions.

Blood Drive – Butch KealeyLate breaking news.... Butch reports that the blood drive on July 13produced 77 pints with 4 “doubles.” There were 84 potential donors “throughthe door.” This was a great drive result. A rough count was that about twelvemembers and volunteers worked the drive, accounting to over 50 hours ofservice. Thank you team!

Amazingly simple home remedies: submitted by Dick Collopy

1. A void cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold the vegetables while you chop.

2. Men can avoid arguments with females about lifting the toilet seat by using the sink.

3. For high blood pressure sufferers ~ simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure on your veins. Remember to use a timer.

4. A mouse trap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.

5. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then you'll be afraid to cough.

6. You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

7. If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

We'll be friends until we are old and senile.... Then, we'll be new friends :-)
