1.0 INTRODUCTION
Dynamac Corporation (Dynamac) recieved Work Assignment (WA) No.C03016 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) RegionIII office, under contract No. 68-W9-0005 (TES VIII), to providecompliance oversight of Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs)during a PRP-lead Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS)at the Hunterstown Road Superfund Site (the Site) located inStraben Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. Paul C. RizzoAssociates, Inc. (PCR) has been contracted by the PRPs to conductthe RI/FS. As part of the Work Assignment, Dynamac was tasked byEPA to collect soil samples from specific off-Site locations. Thisfield trip report summarizes the sample collection effort, providesmaps of the sample locations, and provides a sample log for futurereference.
1.1 Facility Description
The Site is located 1.5 miles northeast of Gettysburg in StrabenTownship, Adams County, Pennsylvania. The Site occupiesapproximately 22 acres and is located on both sides of HunterstownRoad directly north of the Hunterstown Road/Shealer Roadintersection. Three unnamed tributaries to Rock Creek are adjacentto portions of the Site. The streams, in reference to the Site, arenamed the West, Middle, and East Streams. The Site contains sevenareas of concern: the Former Drum Burial Area No. 1, the FormerDrum Burial Area No. 2, the North Cornfield, the South Cornfield, the Former Lagoon, the Stressed Vegetation Area, and the BorrowArea.
Wastes were deposited at the Site by Frederick Shealer, theproperty owner. The wastes disposed at the Site include solvents, paint sludges, clay sludges, septic tank sludges, and asbestosinsulation. The disposal methods incuded direct dumping, burial, and spray application.
Investigations by the Pennsylvania Department of EnvironmentalResources (PADER), EPA, and PCR have shown elevated concentrationsof the metals: arsenic, chromium, nickel, and zinc, and thevolatile organics: trichloroethylene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,1-dichloroethylene, chloroform, toluene, ethylbenzene, and methylenechloride.

2.0 SAMPLING ASSIGNMENT
On October 7, 1991 Dynamac, as requested by EPA WAM Mr. FrankVavra, submitted a draft statment of work for an additionalsampling activity at the Hunterstown Road Site. The task was inresponse to concerns raised by Mr. Donald Waddel, an adjacentproperty owner. Mr. Waddel alleged that contaminated soils from theformer bed of Middle Stream had been moved to an area adjacent tohis house during land grading operations initiated by himself.Middle Stream had been shown to have been contaminated byactivities at the subject site. Dynamac was to coordinate, with Mr.Waddel, a site visit that was to include the collection of two soilsamples. The sample locations were to be determined by the propertyowner. The samples were to be analysed for metals and volatileorganics.
On Thursday October 17, 1991, Dynamac personnel Carl Rodzewich andDavid Schock met with Mr. Waddel at his home. Mr. Waddel escortedDynamac to the area of concern and identified the locations that hewished sampled. Permission to obtain a background sample from anarea behind his home was obtained.
On October 18, 1991 EPA primary contact Frank Vavra contactedDynamac to add the collection of two additional soil samples to thework assignment. The purpose of the additional samples was todetermine if contaminents had migrated via air dispersion to nearbyresidential properties during the spray application of wastes atthe subject site. The samples were to be analyed for metals. Theactual locations of the samples were determined during a meetingbetween Dynamac and Mr. Vavra on October 23, 1991.
On October 28, 1991, Dynamac personnel Carl Rodzewich and ThomasGreenman completed the sampling assignment. A total of 8 samplesincluding trip blank, rinsate sample, and duplicate sample wereobtained during the visit. The soil samples were obtained from thepredetermined locations and no deviations to the sample locationswere noted. Please refer to the attached sample location map andsample log for a description of the samples.

OVERVIEW
The set of samples for Case 17336 consisted of six soil(6) samples and one (1) associated rinsate blank whichwere analyzed according to the Contract laboratoryProgram (CLP) Routine Analytical Services (RAS) .
SUMMARY
All analytes were successfully analyzed in all samples.Areas of concern with respect to data usability arelisted according to the seriousness of the problem. These include:
MINOR ISSUES
Several blanks had reported results for analytes thatwere >IDL. The reported results for the analytes inthe affected samples which are <5X the blankconcentrations may be biased high and therefore, havebeen qualified "B" on the data summary forms assummarized in the following table:
Analyte Sample type Type of blank
Al, Ca, Fe, Na aqueous preparation
Na soil Preparation
Se soil continuingcalibration (CCB)
fiR306375
The ICP serial dilution result was outside of the 10%control limit for the Zn analyte in the soil samples. The reported results for this analyte in the soil
__________samples_haYe been qualified MJM.
The matrix spike recovery was below the lower controllimit (<75%) for the Sb and Se analytes in the soilsamples. The quantitation limit and reported resultsfor these analytes in the soil samples may be biasedlow and have been qualified "UL" and "L" respectively, except when superseded by the "B" qualifier because ofthe blank contamination.
The laboratory duplicate result for the Mn analyte inthe soil samples was outside the control limit,(RPD>20%). The reported results for this analyte inthe soil samples have been qualified estimated, "J".
Replicate method of standard addition analyses wereperformed for As in samples MCDL41 and MCDL45. Thecorrelation coefficients of the MSAs in both sampleswere less than 0.995. The reported results for As inthese samples have been qualified estimated, "J".
Several analytical spike recoveries were low (<85%) forthe Se and Tl analytes. The reported results andquantitation limits may be biased low and therefore, have been qualified "L" and "UL" respectively, for theTl analyte in the affected samples. The data for Sehave already been qualified "L" because of a low matrixspike recovery as previously mentioned.
NOTES
The laboratory duplicate results were outside thecontractual control limits of 20% RPD or ± CRDL for theCu and Mg analytes. However, the technical controllimits of 35% RPD or ± 2xCRDL set in the FunctionalGuidelines, were not exceeded for these analytes. Therefore, Cu and Mg were not qualified on the datasummary forms.
The data was reviewed in accordance with the National FunctionalGuidelines with modifications for use within Region III forEvaluating Inorganic Analyses.
