107 Years of Tradition at thePriddis & Millarville Fair

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society, I would like to welcome you to the Priddis & Millarville Fair. This being the 107th annual Fair reminds us how very important our roots in agriculture are. The bringing together of people to showcase their wares and participate in fun family-oriented events is a long-standing tradition in agricultural communities. We at MRAS are proud to continue this tradition. How appropriate it is to have the theme “To Market We Go” in a time where people are concerned about the food they eat and are looking to local markets to supply fresh healthy foods. A very special thanks to those who take the time to enter their items or participate in the Fair, to the many volunteers who drive this event, and to those who come out to enjoy the day. Good luck to all and I hope you have a great day at the Fair!

Llama ShowcaseStarting time: 10:00 a.m. south of the grandstand

Showcasing allows for more interaction between the public and llamas along with the ability to ask questions, take pictures and learn more about these unique animals. A small obstacle course will be set up and the public can try their skills at leading a llama.

Along with the llamas, a number of llama owners will be setting up display tables with various products that are made from Llamas, such as:◊ Raw Fibre Yarn◊ Finished Products made from llama fibre◊ Consumable products such as Pepperoni & Jerky◊ Gloves◊ Moccasins◊ Flower bed fertilizer

The public will be allowed to purchase these products if they so wish.

A Few Llama FactsLlamas, alpacas, guanacos, & vicunas are all members of the Camelid family. Today’s camelids originated on the central plains of North America about 40 million years ago. From there, about 3 million years ago, llama-like animals dispersed to South America. By the end of the last ice age, approximately 10,000 - 12,000 years ago, they were extinct in North America.

Llamas were possibly domesticated from guanacos in the Andean highlands of Peru 4,000 - 5,000 years ago, and are among the oldest domestic animals in the world. Primarily beasts of burden, they also provided native herdsman with meat, fibre for clothing, hide for shelter, manure pellets for fuel, and offerings to their gods.

There are an estimated 7,000,000 llamas in South America and an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 llamas in Canada.

◊ Life Span: about 15 to 25 years◊ Height: 40 - 45” at shoulders, 5.5 - 6’ at head◊ Weight: 280 - 450 lbs◊ Gestation: 350 days (average)

The Chinook Llama & Alpaca Club (located in Central Alberta) is the proud donor of the Llama Section and Fleece Competition of the Priddis & Millarville Fair. We continue to encourage llama owners from across Western Canada to participate in the Fair.
