Welcome

Our Values

City Gateway is a charity founded in 1999 by a group of City workers, keen to support the local community of Tower Hamlets which had been left behind by the area’s economic development, risking a lost generation in the labour force. Flourishing over the last 15 years, we have achieved excellent results with young people, particularly those who are not thriving in mainstream education.

One of the key reasons for our success is our staff team. All City Gateway staff are passionate about making a difference to the lives of the young people that they work with. They do this by helping them develop the skills and self-belief that they need to progress into training, Apprenticeships or employment, as well as by providing them with the support and encouragement that they need to overcome any barriers or obstacles that they may be facing in their lives.

As City Gateway continues to prosper we are looking forward to opening two new schools in Hackney and Newham in the next few years. It’s been a really exciting journey so far and we have seen thousands of lives changed by the work that we do. We’re all looking forward to another fantastic year of bringing hope to more young people than ever before and invite you to be part of it.

ExcellenceTo be excellent in all of our professional services.

AmbitionTo be ambitious for the individuals and communities we work with.

InnovationTo be innovative in finding fresh, high-impact solutions.

At City Gateway it is our mission to bring hope to the local communities of London, especially Tower Hamlets. We do this through preparing and progressing disadvantaged and disengaged young people aged 13-24 and women into education or sustained employment.

Quality Assurance

Beacon Status recognises City Gateway’s excellence and innovation in Further Education and example of best practice in the sector.

City Gateway was graded Outstanding in our first Ofsted inspection in 2010/2011.

City Gateway 14-19 Provision was graded Outstanding in 2014.

“City Gateway is a truly inspiring organisation. It is

rare to find an organisation really living up to the challenge of its own values, let alone one in which this is supported by an effective and intelligent approach to people practices”

City Gateway was the first organisation in the UK to be awarded the NYA Hear by Right Gold Award for youth participation in service design.

City Gateway’s Apprenticeship scheme helps bridge the gap from the training environment to the working world.

These courses are designed to teach them about employability, develop their functional skills and ultimately gain a vocational qualification. Depending on their level of prior attainment, they can be training with us for up to a year before they will start an Apprenticeship.

As part of their Apprenticeship they will be assessed on the job once per month during a visit by one of our NVQ Assessors. The assessor will remain the same throughout the placement,

• Changes a young person’s future

• Contributes to your organisation’s corporate responsibility aims

• Improved productivity for your organisation

• Business can create a committed and competent workforce

• Provides organisations with the opportunity to have a more diverse workforce

• Can create line management opportunities for junior members of staff

and line managers are encouraged to feedback to assessors during their visits with questions or general points about their Apprentice. The assessor will set the Apprentice work to be completed before the next visit, and it can be expected that the Apprentice will require around one hour per week during working hours to complete some of this NVQ work.

As part of their contracted hours the Apprentice will also attend training at City Gateway 1 day out of their 5 day working week for the first 6 months to work towards their Technical Certificate and Functional Skills, which includes English and Maths qualifications (if required).

• Motivates the existing workforce and makes them feel more in touch with the community

• Allows the Apprentice, who previously may have been claiming JSA (Job Seekers Allowance), to earn a wage thus easing the burden on the wider economy

• Enhances your brand profile. City Gateway is part of the Evening Standard’s Ladder for London campaign. By taking on an Apprentice on you’ll join the list of businesses that now appear on the Evening Standard website for all to see.

I found school quite challenging, not because I struggled with the work, but because I didn’t feel I fitted in. The relationship I had with my teachers wasn’t good either, that’s what put me off going to university. Instead, I dropped out of education and got a job at a security firm for a few months and that’s when a friend told me about City Gateway.

City Gateway didn’t feel like school, the teachers respected me and treated me like an adult. It was up to me to get my work done on time. They helped with my schoolwork but were also there to help support me emotionally (we could have one-on-one meetings if I was having problems). I also learnt practical skills like how to write a cover letter and dress for interviews. My confidence grew and after doing my qualifications I entered a competition that meant I needed to do a presentation in front of the managers of RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland), it was scary! I came second and was really happy because I’ve never achieved anything before.

Since starting with City Gateway I have been hired by Derwent London. I manage the building and if a tenant has a problem I am the person they come to. My favourite thing about working here is the teamwork, we are all friends.

What I have gained most from City Gateway is confidence. In the past I was scared to give presentations but recently I gave a presentation in front of 100 people and I even presented a business proposal to the site managers of RBS. Next month I’m hoping to speak to the tenants of the building I manage about sustainable energy consumption.

There are always new things coming along and I’m starting to get the hang of it.

“I’ve learnt how to work as a team, it’s not like school, you have to get along with the person sitting next to you”

I chose an Apprenticeship because I knew it was the best option for me.

I didn’t enjoy my time at college and I wanted to do training at the same time as working. When I heard about City Gateway and that they provided Apprenticeships I decided it was the right choice for me. City Gateway provided me with the qualifications I needed to get on to an Apprenticeship. I am grateful for the opportunity to be working for EY. I wanted to work in an environment which is moving and growing at a fast pace. I am doing a wide range of work on a daily basis, every day is different and this was something I was really looking forward to. My key responsibilities as a corporate responsibility coordinator are to manage all the enquiries we get every day about EY’s Corporate Responsibility (CR) programmes – Smart Futures and the Accelerate Network. I also update the database for EY employees who are currently volunteering on our programmes. And I work on the Smart Futures programme, a 10 month programme for UK students in receipt of free school meals or first

in their family to go to university, which kicks off with three weeks’ paid work experience at EY. I help promote Smart Futures opportunities to volunteers and support the young people through the programme.

At the moment I am really enjoying my Apprenticeship at EY, with all the support from my colleagues and the opportunity to work really hard and push myself to the best of my abilities. EY gives me the opportunity to change roles and to explore and try new things. I see myself seeking new opportunities within EY – this would give me the chance to build on my current skills and learn new things within my career. Getting onto an Apprenticeship was the best decision I made. It has allowed me the opportunity to transition into the working world in a professional environment. This Apprenticeship at EY will open many doors and opportunities for me to progress my career in different services and firms in the future.

Shah is currently completing an Apprenticeship with EY through City Gateway.

“EY gives me the opportunity to change roles and to explore and try new things. I see myself seeking new opportunities within EY”
