City, Akwesasne and Transport Canada officials sign Port divestiture agreementTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario - Officials from the City of Cornwall, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and Transport Canada gathered at City Hall Thursday morning to sign the necessary documents for the transfer of the Port of Cornwall.

The signing marks the culmination of numerous meetings and negotiation

sessions over the past two years for the area known as the Port of Cornwall and the sur-rounding lands. Through the transfer, the City of Cornwall and Mohawk Council of Akwesasne will become co-owners of the Port lands.

The transfer is ownership is effective today. A joint entity, known as Cornwall Akwesasne Port Development Commission, has been established to oversee the man-agement and long-term development of the

Port under the umbrella of a co-owners’ agreement.

“The transfer of the Port of Cornwall sig-nals a new era of cooperation and collabora-tion between our two communities,” said Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “By taking ownership of the Port, we will collect-ively oversee the future use of a key piece of our waterfront.”

“This milestone in our partnership with the City of Cornwall and Transport Canada is

a model for other Indigenous and non Indigenous Communities to strive towards. We look forward to continuing to work with our partners to create additional opportun-ities for both our communities,” added Akwesasne Grand Chief Abram Benedict.

A media event and community celebra-tion is being planned for the near future at the Port of Cornwall site to formally announce the transfer.

Upper Canada Playhouse audiences are in for an entertaining visit when they drop into Truvy’s Beauty Shop, in the upcoming hit show, Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling, opening this week.

“The popular play has been a favourite with audiences at theatres around the world, chiefly because it’s a show that entertains on almost every level,” said director, Donnie Bowes.

“It’s comedy with a bite. A show that’s filled with colourful characters, plenty of laughs and an engaging story about real people and the challenges they face. Audiences are treated to a well-rounded experience that will entertain them and stay with them long after the final curtain.”

grow for four-year-old Lily Douglas as Cristill Rock prepares to hold a free water fill event on Friday July 8 to raise money for the little girl recently diagnosed with cancer.

The Brookdale Avenue store will be offering water fills between 9am-5pm with any donation for Lily. No minimum or maximum donation is required but Christine Plouffe, who owns the store with her husband, said “We know the com-munity really cares and the hope is people will know anything they give is really helping this

Two tons of garbage out of the St. Lawrence River and countingCORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s community

effort to take back the St. Lawrence River from garbage is well on its way to making a differ-ence, with two tons of debris taken out of the River so far this summer. River Cleanup volun-teers have one session down and have 4 to go with the next Cleanup taking place out of the River Institute at St. Lawrence College this Saturday morning. Beginning at 9 am and end-ing at 1 pm, the Cleanup session will be fol-lowed by the River Institute Annual Open House from 1 pm to 3 pm, making for a full day of River education and restoration that pays tribute to the Great River.

The summer of 2016 will see the Great St. Lawrence River Cleanup tackle 5 in-River and shoreline sessions that are hoping to provide more drinkable, swimmable, fishable, and sus-tainable water to the citizens of Cornwall and Akwesasne. Coordinator for Cornwall’s Cleanup team, Karen Douglass Cooper says, “At our first Cleanup, on June 19, we witnessed such an amazing community effort with over 100 local anglers, divers, and members of the general public coming together to haul old tires, shop-ping carts, and scrap metal out of the River.” She

adds, “This next session on July 9 will have us revisit some of the more heavily polluted areas where submerged items had to be left behind the last time. We will also be taking on a debris filled inlet located next to the College.”

The Cleanup Project is the result of an idea launched by the recently formed Upper St. Lawrence River Protection Network, a group of River related groups, agencies, and community members. With funding assistance provided from the Great Lakes Guardian Community Fund, Ontario Trillium Foundation, and the RBC Blue Water Fund, this unique initiative has com-munity involvement from the River Institute, the Seaway Valley Divers, the Cornwall Lunker Club, and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. Support is also being provided by the City of Cornwall, Tomlinson Group, O2 to Go, and Cristill Rock.

This second Cleanup at the River Institute will play host to shoreline cleanup volunteers from RBC, Cornwall’s Adopt-A-Street program, high school students, and the general public. More volunteers are always welcome and more information can be obtained by contacting Karen Douglass Cooper or Mesha Boyer

at 613-936-6620 (ext. 229) or by e-mailing [email protected] or visiting www.riverinstitute.ca. An eco-education tent will also

be on site providing information on River relat-ed recreation, science, and environmental pro-tection programs.

2016 edition of Waterfest is heating upTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario – Dragon boats will fly down the old canal in support of local charities at the seventh annual Cornwall Waterfest.

Waterfest goes Aug. 13 in west-end Cornwall.

Hundreds of spectators will line the edge of the field at Second Street West and Haulage Road as rowers go head-to-head.

Kate Dwyer, chair of the event, said in an interview spectators will be treated to not only races, but a popular event begun just last year.

“We’re going to do the tug of war again this

year. Last year it really turned out to be a great event,” said Dwyer.

The tug of war is actually a faceoff on the same boat. Two groups of 10 rowers sit facing each other and row towards each other. The winning rowers are successful in pushing the boat against the paddling of their opponents.

Nearly a dozen boats and about 15 vendors have registered to take part in the event, which runs from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Volunteers are also being sought to help on the day, and more registrations are being accepted for boats and vendors. For more infor-mation click over to cornwallwaterfest.ca.

‘Hub’ concept planned for First on second property

CORNWALL, Ontario - Bourgon Construction is conducting a feasibility study to explore whether a business and community hub on the corner of Pitt and Second Streets can meet the needs of select businesses and organizations in the area.

Community hubs play a critical role in build-ing economic and social cohesion in commun-ities, as highlighted in the “Community Hubs in Ontario: A Strategic Framework & Action Plan” report recently released by the Ontario government.

A hub can anchor organizations together and its model is most attractive for small start-ups, professionals, charities, not-for-profit organizations and other community and service groups who have specific space needs but need to carefully manage costs.

The First On Second model would feature a fully-accessible building with shared facilities and services, allowing users to lease only the space they need and provide an efficient way to share amenities and equipment used less than full-time.

The study is in its initial stages and will be carried out this summer.

Alyssa Blais, the former executive director of the Agapè Centre, has been hired by Bourgon to oversee the work.

“We want to create spaces designed for the community that are welcoming and inclusive,” said Blais. “Having a broad range of partners and services from a variety of sectors of the econ-omy under one roof can transform the way ser-vices are delivered and received.”

Work to clean up the site is underway and

new signs will identify the First On Second project.

“We are aiming to create a new kind of shared facility that will strike a balance between sustainable rents and inspiring spaces, appro-priate for both the energy level we need from start-ups to move our economy forward and for all the essential services our local organizations

provide the community,” said Chris Markell, who plans to set-up a new non-profit organization to manage the project if the feasibility study con-cludes positively.

Initial feedback from potential participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Continued consultation with NPOs, charities, small busi-ness owners and start-ups will be ongoing.

Code Heroes has top tech seminars in JulyniCk SeebruCHSpecial to TC Media

CORNWALL, Ontario - Code Heroes has kicked off a pilot program to help bring Cornwall to the cutting edge of the digital world.

On Saturday, July 2, Code Heroes began a ser-ies of classes on all things tech.

“There’s a huge need for kids and adults in Cornwall to learn coding,” said Kelly Bergeron, the founder of Code Heroes.

Bergeron is a veteran of the tech industry and is from Cornwall. She has worked for the RCMP, the Department of National Defense and the tech company Salesforce in San Francisco. When

she returned to Cornwall she felt like the City was falling behind major cities in Canada in this key field, which is why she started Code Heroes.

“It is hard for smaller communities to keep up with innovation centres in big cities like Montreal,” Bergeron said. “I feel like there is an expansion in innovation coming to Cornwall and I hope a designated hub is built for it.”

Code Heroes is a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching the citizens of Cornwall a whole gamut of tech skills from digital market-ing, to 3D printing, to game design.

Code Heroes will be running classes through-out the month of July in their rented space at 225 Pitt Street.

According to Bergeron, the demand for these courses has already been very high and some classes are full.

For the first week of July, classes are pay-what-you-can, then for the rest of the month, prices range from $10 to $20.

The Code Heroes classes run from Monday night to Saturday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Right now, the classes are a pilot program that Code Heroes is running, but Bergeron hopes that if it is successful that she can create something more permanent.

“After this pilot project is over I want to show the City the impact classes like these have,” Bergeron said. “I want to show them the need for a permanent program dedicated to

innovation.”Bergeron said that a person who is not digit-

ally literate could be left behind and miss out on opportunities in the future economy.

“Canada will have a skills gap in four years,” Bergeron said. “If you are not in the know with digital, you could be missing out on a cool job. Right now the new federal government is really pushing innovation and there is a low unemployment rate in digital jobs,” she continued.

Bergeron says that she is pleased with the response she has received in Cornwall. Besides already having sold out classes, local residents have been coming to Code Heroes to ask how they can volunteer. To sign-up for a class, go to the Code Heroes website at www.codeheroes.ca

2016 edition of Active Transportation Challenge a huge success

CORNWALL, Ontario - Twenty-two workplaces and 145 individuals took part in the 2016 Cornwall & Area Active Transportation Challenge, helping to raise awareness about changing our transporta-tion behaviours.

The event, which is in its third year locally, is part of the national Commuter Challenge held annually during Environment Week. All told, the participants combined to log 834 sustainable trips during the week-long event, which ran from May 31 to June 6 and coincided with the national Commuter Challenge event.

Individual registration decreased slightly from 2015, however there was a 25% increase in work-place team registrations and Cornwall once again succeeded in maintaining its first place position nationally compared to other communities of its size. This year’s Challenge featured a moonlight bike ride along the recreational path, organized by challenge partners the Cornwall Outdoor Club de Plein Air. Donning bright colours and lights, the 30-plus participants of all ages cycled from Lamoureux Park to Archie’s and back, enjoying an ice cream break half way.

“The Challenge and its events are about raising awareness about transportation behaviours and helping people to change their behaviours. We’re excited to see that participants this year – although fewer in numbers – actually took more trips on average than in previous years,” said Chantal Lalonde, Health Promotion Specialist with the Eastern Ontario Health Unit and Challenge organ-izer. In fact, participants logged an average of 5.9 active or sustainable trips (compared to 4.5 trips in 2015).

The most popular modes of active and sustain-able transportation remain walking, carpooling, and cycling. All told, in seven days participants tracked 17,323 kilometres; saved 1,135 litres of fuel; burned 140,415 calories; and avoided 2,305 kilograms of greenhouse gases.

Event officials awarded prizes to participants and workplaces on Thursday. The Top Workplace Team in each category received a plaque (donated by the Kinsmen of Cornwall) and twelve Workplace Teams received honourable mentions for their par-ticipation in this year’s event. Workplace Team awards were handed out to Total Cyclery and Sport (small workplace); Seaway Valley Community Health Centre (medium workplace); and the Children’s Aid Society of SDG (large workplace).

In addition, over 20 prizes were awarded at ran-dom to participants who managed to log a min-imum of three active or sustainable commutes. Prizes included gift certificates from Play it Again Sports, Mark’s, Lindale’s Shoes, and Quest PTS, as well as two 3-month Family Swim Passes at the Aquatic Centre, Transit Goodies and City of Cornwall Jackets.

The Active Transportation Challenge is hosted by the Transition Cornwall+ Active Transportation Group in partnership with a team of representa-tives from local organizations and volunteers. The Challenge rewards participants for using active and sustainable modes of transportation such as walking, cycling, rollerblading, carpooling or using public transit.

Twenty-two workplaces and 145 individuals took part in the 2016 Cornwall & Area Active Transportation Challenge, helping to raise awareness about changing our transportation behaviours.

Makinson named 2016 United way campaign chairTodd [email protected]

CORNWALL, Ontario - Bill Makinson will be the chair for the upcoming 2016 United Way commun-ity campaign. Makinson is a native of Cornwall and has several years of volunteer experience in the non-profit sector.

“I am extremely honoured to be asked to chair the United Way/Centraide SD&G community cam-paign,” said Makinson. “Being on the board of direc-tors for a charitable organization for the last 10 years, I understand the hard work that goes into fundraising.

“I believe in United Way/Centraide SD&G and I am really excited to be part of this great team.”

Makinson’s involvement includes serving as president of the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters and Past Chair for the Golf to End MS Tournament. Makinson began his career with CogecoTV as a volunteer when he was in high school. His involvement with local television con-tinued over the years leading to his most recent role as a producer for the organization for more than 10 years.

“The Board of Directors is very fortunate to have someone with Bill’s expertise and desire to help the community. He is an amazing community oriented individual and would do almost anything to further the strength of our SDG community,” said past cam-paign chair Nolan Quinn. “We are lucky to have him accept our chair position for 2016.”

Canada’s Highland Regiments make history at the gamesPRovidEd by GlENGaRRy HiGHlaNd GamES

CORNWALL, Ontario - For the first time ever at the Glengarry Highland Games, the Tug of War Challenge will welcome all sixteen Canadian Highland regiments as competi-tors in the Challenge Cup to be held Saturday, July 30th. The Tug of War was always a trad-itional event in the early Games and in 2007 was resurrected as a competition between two highland regiments, the SDG Highlanders and Ottawa’s Cameron Highlanders. In 2008 then Minister of Defence Peter MacKay was the Games Guest of Honour and encouraged all highland regi-ments to participate at the Games event. Each year more teams have been added to the roster building up to this year’s 10th Anniversary Challenge which will present a complete field of regiments.

Last year, the competition added a Charity Prize Purse donated to the charity of

the winning team’s choice. “Soldier On Canada” was the charity of choice for the 2015 winning team, The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa.

The Commander of the Canadian Army, Lieutenant-General Marquis Hainse, CMM, MSC,CD wishes the teams well and states:”I’ve seen firsthand the spirit and dedication that is required to field a team and compete in the Highlanders Tug-o-War Challenge. It’s a tough and physically demanding team sport that helps promote morale, dedication and com-mitment among our soldiers. I believe this type of sporting event creates strong com-munity bonds as it gives Canadians a chance to meet and interact with soldiers from across the country.”

Bud Walsh, Games Director of The Highlanders Tug of War Challenge Cup says, “It is the only sporting event of its kind in Canada that is available for Canadian Army Reserve units and goes beyond mere fitness benefits

to reinforce the positive character of the per-sonnel who make up the Canadian Armed Forces their commitment to serve the nation, their neighbours and their communities.”

Minister of National Defence Harjit S. Sajjan explains, “As a former Commanding Officer of an Army Reserve unit, I know the importance of activities such as the Highlanders Tug-o-War Challenge,”

“Team sports, in particular, are key ele-ments of any good training plan for the development of a strong military organiza-tion. I have no doubt that the Highlanders Tug-o-War Challenge contributes greatly to the development of physical fitness, team-work, esprit de corps, loyalty, commitment and strong community bonds. These are all qualities that will serve our country well in times of crisis, at home and abroad.

“To see all 16 Canadian Highland units compete in front of cheering Canadian crowds will be a thrilling event.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Following months of relentless advocacy by the Ontario Autism Coalition, parents, charities, and opposition par-ties, the Ontario Government reinstated direct Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) therapy funding for families of autistic children over the age of five.

Earlier this year, the government had removed direct IBI funding for all children over the age of five, despite many of them waiting for years on a wait-list and never receiving the life changing therapy.

“Autism doesn’t end at five and I’m glad the public finally made the Government realize that,” McDonell said. “IBI makes a tremendous difference in an autistic child’s development, allowing some children the only available path

to a full and productive life. Parents came to Queen’s Park on several occasions to voice their opposition to the Liberal Government’s arbi-trary and unfair cut to autism funding.

“Now that the Liberals have finally listened to Ontarians on IBI funding, we encourage them to also take Ontarians’ advice on many other matters and reverse their damaging cuts to physician services, nurses, education supports, and other essential services Ontarians rely on.”

Prior to the change, families of children aged five or older were given an $8,000 lump sum payment to cover the cost of therapy until the roll-out of new programs in 2018.

Parents highlighted that this amount wouldn’t cover more than just a few months of therapy at best. Under the new arrangement, children will receive the required direct funding for the therapy they need until they are appro-priately transitioned into the new programs.

particuliers.

Plusieurs activités et présentations interactives

ont été conçues pour l’exposition.

L’exposition sera présentée du 10 juin au 29

janvier.

When you’re losing distance

Whatever your abilities in other sports, if you’re thinking of taking up golf, it’s better to take lessons. The professionals have been trained to respond to your expectations, and

they’ll be happy to inform you about the differ-ent aspects of the game, such as etiquette, clothing, equipment, etc...

It’s strongly recommended that beginners

sign up for courses so they get a good under-standing of the different facets of this game, as well as the basic techniques, such as how to hold the club, foot positioning, weight distribu-

tion, etc.As golf is accessible for all, it’s enough to be

interested and to want to learn the basic tech-niques; with a bit of practice, everyone can get there. Relax, inform yourself, ask questions. Don’t be shy, everyone had to start somewhere. Even the famous Tiger! You will be more com-fortable with your game and will have a much better time. And above all, you will progress more quickly.

Think about it: you certainly wouldn’t ven-ture onto the highest ski slope for your first des-cent without taking a few lessons and trying a few runs on easy slopes! It’s the same thing with golf.

After a series of lessons, it’s recommended to start on the driving ranges, and then move on to the par three courses. Once these are mas-tered, you will have more pleasure playing on the larger scale courses...

The steps to take before setting off on a large course are pleasant, and will give you more con-fidence in yourself.

Before imagining you’re the next Tiger... take some courses

One of the most annoying (and dishearten-ing) problems that golfers often face is losing distance on their shots. One round of golf and you’re hitting the ball like Tiger Woods, the next week you’re hitting so poorly you prob-ably feel as if you could throw the ball farther than what your club face is doing for you.

So what happened?Could be any number of things, really.

Before blaming it on your swing (which you will eventually do) consider a few other sus-pects—which can and do affect your swing.

If you’ve had an especially stressful week or if you’ve been hitting the gym and your mus-cles are tight or sore, that could be the culprit. When you muscles aren’t lax enough to make a full swing without hurting, they will com-pensate (with or without your permission or knowledge) to avoid moving into the painful position. It doesn’t take much to throw your

swing off and that can certainly lead to losing distance.

If by chance you’ve changed drivers and have one of the new power woods, you may want to try to tee your ball up a little higher. These wonder woods need a bit more height on the tee to connect with the ball properly. In fact, you may need to buy some longer tees.

Lifting your head even a fraction of a second too soon can result in poorly hit ball. Keep your head down and keep your eyes on the tee spot until you’ve followed all the way through your swing.

Make sure you take a full swing at the ball. Again, this can go back to your muscle tone. But it could be you’re just hanging up before you get the full arc completed. Have a buddy watch to see if you’re turning fully or not. Or set up a video camera and record a few swings and then watch yourself. One thing is certain,

it is nearly impossible to know if you’re taking a full swing without some “outside” help. You need to see yourself or have someone watch you.

Also, make sure that you’re not gripping the club shaft too tightly. If you’re knuckles are turning white, you need to relax.

You also want to ensure that your left side stays firm and your left knee is bent through impact. Again, too much tightness will kill your distance. Swing through the ball and not “at” the ball. Being fluid is key.

And lastly, make sure your arms stay extended through the arc. Don’t let them col-lapse too soon.

The best advice, perhaps, when you’re los-ing distance is—Hey, it happens to all of us. Don’t panic or stress over it. Your game will return and then it will be your buddy’s turn to ‘throw’ his ball.

SPORTS

River Kings ready for fifth seasonCORNWALL, Ont. Bob Desjardins is going

nowhere. The veteran bench boss will return in the fall

as the teamís head coach for the 2016-17 LNAH season.

ìIím really looking forward to starting the season in Cornwall,î said Desjardins, who came to town in the middle of the last two seasons. ìWe will be ready.î

Desjardins would like his team to be built with character players who play with passion and emotion.

ìWe have a good core here in Cornwall,î said Desjardins. ìWe have to add to that core now.î

Meanwhile, preparations are well underway for the River Kingsí fifth season.

ìItís good to have Bob coming back,î said general manager Rick Lalonde. ìWe have been working closely together preparing for the draft in June and looking at options to continue to improve our team.î

The big focus right now for Lalonde and Desjardins, who also serves as Cornwallís assist-ant GM, is the LNAH draft.

The River Kings have the 1st and 2nd overall picks.

OPINION

-30- Thanks for all the memoriesTOdd [email protected]

That photo over there was the first one I ever shot for this newspaper, way back in February of 2012. We ran it on the front page that week as part of Winterfest celebrations here in Cornwall. I’m not going to lie to you…it’s my niece.

Family is a big part of what we do at this news-paper, and it’s why writing this column is so difficult.

It will be my last as editor of Seaway News. Starting next week a new person will assume

the role of journalist at this newspaper – and my decision to move away from a career that I have truly cherished is something that will weigh on me in the days and weeks ahead.

I recently chose to take on a new challenge, one that I know will bring new successes and (I hope) rewards that I can share with every mem-ber of our community. In the meantime the real-ity of my decision has slowly begun to sink in…and while I look forward to the future with opti-mism, it’s only normal to look back at the fun one has had.

And that’s what this job has been about, for the most part - fun. Maybe it’s why, on occasion in this space, I have referred to Cornwall as ‘Fun City’. It’s a moniker I stole from the late, great CCVS teacher Bill Metcalfe, who would use the nickname regularly to describe Cornwall.

This job has afforded me the opportunity to soar above our city in a biplane, sail the St. Lawrence River in a billion-dollar naval frigate and rub shoulders with the likes of high-profile politicians and celebrities who have visited Cornwall.

But it’s the people closer to home I will miss the most. One of my favourite interviews was with former Cornwall mayor Phil Poirier, who sadly succumbed to cancer in April, 2014. Barely

a week before he passed away Phil consented to an interview, telling me he wanted to ensure his final public comments were relayed with profes-sionalism and accuracy.

The fact that he chose me and our newspaper to do that is something I’ll never forget. Not because we do our jobs any better than anyone else – but because a man staring death in the face chose us because of the relationship we had cemented in the years leading up to that moment. Phil trusted us…and I can honestly say we have worked hard to gain that trust with every one of the people that has crossed our path.

Others have been brave enough to share information with us on my watch, sometimes anonymously, for what they believed to be the greater good of our community. To know that I may have played a small role in gaining that trust is something else I’ll miss when I write my final story for Seaway News.

The toughest part of moving on is worrying about what you leave behind – but in this case I know I leave Seaway News in good hands. The staff and contributors that I now consider to be close friends have nothing but the best interests of both readers and advertisers as their main motivation for success.

I must carve out some space to thank people like Rick Shaver for welcoming me into the fold at

this newspaper. I owe a lot to people like Rick, who also want nothing but the best for our com-munity and work hard to that end.

Another is Claude McIntosh. He doesn’t know this, but I was scared to death of Mac when I met him for the first time, nearly 20 years ago, as I cut my teeth as a young reporter. It was probably his fiery nature - he once dressed in a suit and tie to layout newspaper pages because a low-brow managing editor complained his jeans and Montreal Canadiens sweater weren’t proper attire for an office.

Whatever the reason, it took a while for our friendship to blossom. Contrary to popular belief in many circles, he has not been the source of any city hall ‘scoops’ we have been fortunate to uncover.

But he has been a powerful sounding board when I needed newspaper advice, and I can only

hope we get the chance to talk as often in the future as we have in the past.

When I made the move to Seaway News in 2012 there was one person who knew it was a smart move, almost from the time I began chat-ting up Rick Shaver about a job as his editor.

Regardless of how a column was received, a story was written or a photograph was shot, she always had my back and was ready to defend her husband’s decision-making, regardless of the circumstance.

It’s been a running joke in our house that every other Monday, when I cover city council, supper for her is usually a bowl of ketchup-laden Kraft dinner, or a bowl of cold cereal.

I’m proud to say that now I’ll be home (almost) every night to cook for Kimberly – she deserves that and so much more for standing beside an old newspaper man.

In response to the opinion column - “Bible Thumpers” accepted for who they are”.

It is interesting that in all the so called funda-mentalist preachers Claude McIntosh mentions in his opinion piece, I have not been guilty of

any of their so called atrocities. Claude has a bad habit of painting all Biblical minded Christians with the same brush. Poor journalism, if you asked me.

I went to the Orlando Virgil to pay my respects for those 49 souls who died without hope in Christ. View the video: https://www.

facebook.com/tom.newton.77/vid-eos/941563859305342/ if you like, and see for yourselves that I was not there to protest, but to remind everyone - “And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear

him, which after he hath killed hath power to

cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him”(Luke

12:4-5).

OPINIONFormer CJSS HQ lives againClaude MCINtOSH

Exterior work on the vacant building at 237 Water St. E. has peeled back the pages of time.

Long covered CJSS call letters painted in black on a concrete exterior over the Water Street entrance circa 1958 have been exposed by much-needed cosmetic work that will turn the former station that started life as a garage into commercial office space.

The building has been vacant since the fall of 2003 when the radio operations, purchased from Paul Emard by Corus, moved to nifty new facilities at 709 Cotton Mill St.t (aka Weave Shed).

Like so many passersby, the exposed call let-ters grabbed the attention of retired educator Jack McMartin.

For McMartin, seeing it brought back mem-ories of growing up with local radio at a time when AM was the big kid on the block and announcers were called DJs who worked with an operator who would “spin” vinyl records on something called a turntable.

Radio came to Cornwall on Feb. 15, 1945 as CKSF at 36 Pitt St., The Mulhern Block, next door to the Standard-Freeholder which owned the licence. Thus, the SF, which at the time was owned by the Fleming family of Owen Sound. They sold the station and newspaper to Thomson Newspapers.

Thomson sold the station to Montreal busi-nessman Stanley Shankman in 1959 and it was moved to 237 Water St. where it shared space with freshly-minted CJSS TV (Channel 8). It is said that Shankman, who had no broadcasting experience, purchased the station as a birthday

gift for his wife.A couple of years later the radio station was

sold to the Emard family while CJOH-TV (Channel 13) snapped up the financially challenged tele-vision operation and promptly closed the station.

The TV station had a gaggle of young up-and-coming talent. Among them, Don McGowan who went on to make a name for himself at CFCF TV in Montreal, while Barry Dunsmore became Middle East bureau chief for ABC TV.

McGowan, who drove around town in a sports car, called his days riding the learning curve in Cornwall some of the most memorable in his long TV career. He has retired and is living in Brockville where he is involved in the perfom-ing arts centre. Dunsmore, after 30 years with ABC, retired to a quiet rural life in Charlotte, Vermont.

Two of the best-known CKSF DJs were Bill LaSalle and Bill Gallant. LaSalle took on the on-air moniker The Saddle Tramp with a country and western show, while Gallant had a night-time show called Willie After Dark with its signature Night Train intro. Johnny Larocque marched folks off to work in the morning, while Carl Fisher told us what was going on in the sports world.

In those days, the station signed off at mid-night with an inspirational biblical message and God Save the Queen.

The station engineer, a wannabe DJ who was rebuffed by management, would do a pretend show after he shut off the transmitter. One night he forgot to turn off the transmitter, so hundreds

of listners heard the “new show.” Next morning dozens of listners called the station to say they liked the “new show.”

It was an era when small town radio stations would send DJs to interview big-name artists playing, in Cornwall’s case, in Montreal or Ottawa.

When a rising star called Elvis Presley was doing a show at the old Ottawa Auditorum, Gallant was dispatched with his battery-operat-ed tape recorder to interview the kid from Memphis. Gallant came away with the only interview on tape, despite the fact the room was full of radio people, none of whom had battery-operated tape machines. Overlooked by the folks who set up the interview was the fact the room didn’t have a single power outlet.

LaSalle, long retired from the business, has a collection of taped interviews that includes Charlie Pride, Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, Brenda Lee, Marty Robbins, Hank Snow and Carl Perkins.

Unfortunately, as LaSalle pointed out a few years back to this scribbler, in this digital age he doesn’t have a machine that will play the old tapes.

His interview with Cash was in the parking lot of the Ottawa Auditorium where the singing legend had just performed to a sold-out crowd. This was a time when Cash was into drugs and booze in a big way. Occasional, he was sober. But not this night.

LaSalle recalled how Cash staggered out to the parking lot, where his tour bus was parked, and promptly leaned over and threw up.

A Charlie Pride interview went much better.

“Just want to thank you for not asking me what it is like to be a black country and western singer,” Pride said with a big smile.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Shortly after midnight on Sept. 5. 1944 the 15,118 residents of Cornwall were shaken out of their beds by an earthquake that measured 5.8. The initial shake was quickly followed by three powerful aftershocks. Many people, thinking it was the end of the world, were on their knees praying in the middle of the streets. The quake caused an estimated $750,000 damage. At least 1,000 chimneys were destroyed. St. Columban’s and Knox United churches suffered severe damage, as did Central Public School and Cornwall Collegiate. Fortunately, the quake struck when the schools were empty. Two large stone chimneys at St. Columban’s rectory crashed through the roof and onto the bedroom floors. The smoke stack at Howard Smith Paper Mill was split nine feet from the top. The centre of the quake was 40 miles northeast of the city.

TRIVIA: In November 1964 this Avonmore native, a missionary in Africa, was murdered by Congolese rebels who had been holding the family hostage for two months. The family was subject of a book, “Out of the Jaws of the Lion”.

ONE LAST THING: Baseball legend Yogi Berra tickled fans with an endless string of mala-propisms - better known as Yogi-sims. As the New York Post once said, he creatively butch-ered the English language. When Yogi’s wife once asked him which of two cemeteries he wanted to buried in, he gave it some thought then said, “Why don’t you surprise me.”

Editor:In response to the often ill informed public opin-

ion held by the majority of this country, that letter carriers are “always” on strike or whining about money, please make an effort to find out more than what is spoon-fed through mainstream TV and Internet sources.

But of course, a monkey could do the job just as well, so what are these high school dropouts com-plaining for? They are lucky to have a job at all!

To lay my cards on the table, I am a letter carrier of eight years and have a masters degree in Journalism, so yes I CAN count to 10, read and write amongst other very clever things, such as “walking a few blocks” each day.

You may be surprised to know that the average

mail foot route nowadays is between 17 to 20 km long, and several km longer in winter time due to snow. All the while carrying sometimes upwards of 50 pounds up and down stairs, opening screen doors with your hands full, trying to push mail into slots clearly not designed for such large letters, and so on.

I like my job, and the majority of my coworkers agree that the deal we had been offered, while not perfect, is a decent, fair one and we should grab it now before its too late.

It’s not to do with pay, or working less hours for the same money, just to keep our pension fund safe that we have paid into, and keep job security as best as possible, and most of the workforce would be happy with the agreement. I for one am well aware

that as postal workers we cannot in this day and age expect to ”win” in the negotiations, merely lose as best we can. And that’s fine, which is why the deci-sion by CUPW to counter the CPC offer with basic-ally the same demands as at the start of the process is just utterly ridiculous and infuriating.

So please if it ends up with myself and my coworkers outside with signs, remember that most of us are forced there to ensure we can at least get a small pay check each week for “strike pay”. Unfortunately we are but pawns in their game, with no say on the offer tabled, which, considering we pay union dues monthly, is an absolute disgrace.

In the most literal sense, just because we are the ”faces” of the company, on the streets talking to cus-tomers and listening to frustrations and complaints,

please don’t shoot the messenger.Sure, we will be visible on the picket line but it’s

not necessarily through choice, we were forced to have a strike vote BEFORE an offer had been made, so there was no basis on which to decide whether to vote ’strike” or ”no strike”. And, people being people, tend to go with the majority which would be the ”yes” vote, to strike. To strike based on noth-ing, no offer, no counter offer, just an ”Us vs Them” mentality.

So please try and look on the other side of the coin this time if a work stoppage occurs, because trust me, it hurts me, my wife and three kids just as much as it does you.

If Big Brother Thor had a little brother it would definitely be Dante, and I think that’s why they chose each other. Dante is the mini me of Thor. These two LOVE sports, have big families, and are kind hearted. They have already planned lots of sports in the future like kicking around a soccer ball, dabbing in lacrosse and working on their stick handling. I think you two won the Stanley Cup of matches!

Small business representatives pulled no punches at a Cornwall Chamber of Commerce sponsored Roundtable meeting, with rising costs, lack of skilled workers, and government bureaucracy topping the list. The delegates represented various sectors of the Cornwall and area business community and their voice was clear. The government needs to step up and take corrective action. “According to those in attendance, the rising costs of doing business is hurting many of them,” said Chamber Director and Roundtable facilitator, Patrick Larose. “Attendees also raised the issue of government red tape that is both complicated and time consuming.”

Chamber gets an earful

‘Tis the season … Drivers, be aware of con-struction around the city as you are commuting from one destination to another and don’t for-get to be patient and courteous. It will cause less stress for everybody!

Mark your calendar ... 12th Annual Pig Roast, Saturday, July 23 from 1pm-7pm, 16050 Post Road, County Rd. 36, Long Sault. Bring a chair, own drinks. Listen to great local music by Northern Echo, Scottish Pipes and Drums, Dancers. Donations toward Cornwall Hospice and local charities.

From a caller ... Thank you so much to the 2 young ladies who were quick to respond and called 911 when I fell and injured myself on a recent walk in Lamoureux Park. They stayed calm and performed First Aid. I’m so grateful for your kindness. I also want to thank another woman for stopping and providing me with a bottle of water. And finally, thank you to the kind gentleman who directed the ambulance for me. This is the Friendly City after all! Two thumbs up!!

Pet Tip of the Week: Dogs get hot too! Please remember to keep your dogs in a cool safe place this summer. Always make sure they have access to fresh clean water in a non-spill bowl and that they are out of the sun. Also, planning your summer vacation? Check ontariospca.ca/factsheets for tips on finding the right pet sitter or boarding kennel for your pet.

A big “Thank You” to the honest person who turned in my son’s lost wallet, intact, at Walmart on June 30th. You made it possible for our trip, for seven people all packed, including four little children. God Bless You!

Great fireworks on Canada Day. Congrats!

Secrets of gardening:- When weeding, the best way to make sure

you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

- A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows.

- Any self- rock will break at least one shovel before accepting its new home.

- Gardening requires a lot of water, most of it in the form of perspiration.

With the summer weather, here are a few tips for keeping your dog cool this summer ~

• Don’t leave your dog in a parked car in the summer, even in the shade with the window left a few inches open. Heatstroke can set in within min-utes. Dogs left in parked cars also risk being harassed or stolen.

• Know the signs for heatstroke: heavy, loud breathing, a staggering gait, bright red gum tissue and tongue. If heatstroke is suspected, wet down your dog and get him/her to the vet as quickly as possible. Both heatstroke and heat exhaustion can result in brain damage, heart failure or death in a short period of time. Thick-coated breeds and mixes are particularly vulnerable, although any breed may be at risk.

• Avoid transporting your dog in the cargo sec-tion of a plane or take a direct, morning or even-ing flight. The hold can become extremely hot.

• Avoid running with your dog during hot weather.

Water Conservation in the Yard:Gather rainwater to water bedding plants. Use

mulches such as wood chips and bark to help pre-vent evaporation. Attach a timer to your sprinkler. Water your lawn in the morning, when it is not windy and only when the lawn shows signs of needing it.

The Community Living Glengarry entry was judged to be the most creative in the Alexandria Canada Day parade.

School is out and with it comes great times for children. Drivers, please be extra cautious when driving and be prepared to stop sudden-ly. Children sometimes get excited and can for-get the rules of the road.

Did you know: Horses require access to hay or pasture throughout the day for grazing and nibbling and supplementary grain feedings twice a day. Typically, a horse will consume about 9 kilograms of food and at least 30 litres of water on a daily basis. It’s also very important they have access to shade during warm and sunny weather.

Drinking water at the correct time maximiz-es its effectiveness on the human body:

2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs; 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion; 1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure; 1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack.
