ABOUT NSBE TheNationalSocietyofBlackEngineers(NSBE) isa501(c)(3)nonprofitorganizationdedicatedtotheacademic and professional success of African-American engineering and technical students andprofessionals. NSBE offers itsmembers leadership training, professional and academic development,mentoringopportunities,communityserviceoutreachprograms,andscholarships.Organization:NSBEisthelargeststudent-managedassociation,comprisedofmorethan400chapters,nationwideandoverseas.Thesechaptersaregeographicallydividedintosixregionsandaregovernedbyanationalexecutiveboard.Membership: NSBE has over 30,000 pre-collegiate, collegiate and professional members. Itsmembershiphasalsogrowntoincludeover3,600pre-collegestudentsinadditiontochaptersinAfrica,Asia,Canada,theCaribbean,andEurope.Programs: NSBE offers programs that are designed to promote Technical Excellence, Academic andProfessional Development, Leadership Development and Pre-College Initiatives. NSBE programs andactivitiesincludecareerfairs,graduateschoolfairs,technicalresearchprojects,academiccompetitions,scholarships,andawards.Conferences:NSBEannuallyhosts18regionalconferences,anationalleadershiptraininginstitute,aninternationalconferenceandanationalconvention,whichdrawcloseto10,000attendees.
ABOUT THE CORNEL L UN IVERS I TY CHAPTER Founded in 1977, NSBE-CU is thepremier organization for Blackstudents in the science, technology,engineering and mathematics (STEM)fieldsatCornellUniversity.NSBE-CUisaffiliated with the nationalorganization’s Region One, whichserves the Northeastern United statesand international chapters. Here atCornell,NSBEiscurrentlycomprisedofapproximately 15 pre-collegiatemembers, 50 collegiate members and15graduatemembers.

CHAPTER H IGHL IGHTS Academic Excellence – In accordance withourmission,NSBE-CUisdedicatedtoprovidingopportunitiesforthescholasticadvancementofourmembers.
Ourtutorialprogram,or 'StudyJams',areheld regularly throughout the school year,offering free tutoring and review sessions forengineering courses. These study jams instillconfidence within attendees and moreover,boostmoralewithinthechapter.
NSBE-CU members are regularly giventhe chance to challenge their knowledge invarious technical and non-technicalcompetitions.Professional Development– NSBE-CU organizesbi-weeklygeneralbodymeetingstooffersupporttoour members. These sessions span a range of pre-professional topics from interview preparation to resumebuilding.WeregularlyinvitecurrentandpastNSBEmemberstodiscusstheirprofessionalendeavorsandprovidememberswithusefultoolsandwisdomtopavetheirownpathwaystotosuccess.
Community Service – NSBE-CU works with the SouthsideCommunity Center, Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC), and theIthacaSciencenter,providingtutoringandeducationalprograms.NSBE-CU participates in the Fall Annual Into the Streets Program, a day ofservicededicated to cleaning the local community. Last yearNSBE-CUperformed200servicehours.NSBE Conferences – NSBE Conferences are used as forums toreinforce its mission and values, gauge progress in the long-rangestrategic plan, and outline future objectives. They are also the maineventsforprofessionalandleadershipdevelopment.NSBE-CUisproudto participate in the Engineers of Tomorrow Competition (ETC) and
Undergraduate Student Technical Research (USTR) Competitions, Draper Technical Challenges, and NSBE FirePitch competitions at this year’s Fall Regional and National Conferences. This year the chapter is preparing tocompeteincompetitionsheldatNSBEConferencesanduseconferencestofurtherbuildrapportwithcompaniesandotherNSBEchapterstofurtherpromotetheNSBEmission.

S IGNATURE PROGRAMS Recruitment & Retention – NSBE-CU focuses onrecruiting members from all STEM backgrounds, with anemphasis on drawing members from the entering class.NSBE-CU’s community building activities, sponsoreddevelopment programs, and leadership opportunities helprecruit and retainmemberswho go on to earn degrees inengineering,scienceandtechnology.Technical Excellence – NSBE-CU emphasizes theimportance of technical awareness and excellence to itsmembers. Members are regularly given opportunitiesattend presentations on cutting-edge technology and careerdevelopmentgivenbythevariousdepartmentsintheCollegeofEngineering,CornellNSBEalumniandcorporatesponsors.Pre-CollegeInitiative(PCI)–ThroughourPCIprogramNSBE-CUworkswithourrecentlyreactivatedNSBEJuniorChapterat IthacaHighSchool,DewittMiddleSchool, andstudents fromSouthsideCommunityCenter toincreasetheexposureofyouthtoSTEMrelatedfields.TheyouthgroupsthatNSBE-CUinteractwithareshownhands-onscienceandengineeringdemonstrations,providedwithfreetutoringsessionsandareconnectedwithNSBEmembersthatarecommittedtofacilitatingthegrowthofthoseinthegroup.Publicity/Telecommunication–NSBE-CUhasuseddifferentformsofmediatoshareoureventswiththoseon Cornell University’s campus aswell as the general public. Through custom-made flyers, socialmedia and astudent-run website, NSBE-CU has been able to increase attendance at NSBE events such as general bodymeetings and volunteer events. Additionally, publicizing our organization through our self-designed NSBE-CU
sweatshirtshasstemmedfurtherinterestinourorganization.
Membership Development - NSBE-CU aims tobringitsmemberstogetherforfunbondingactivitiesoutsideoftheclassroom.TheseactivitiesareintegralinbuildingalonglastingbondandnetworkbetweenNSBE-CUmembers. As a result, members aremoreinvested in contributing to the overall success ofNSBE-CU. This past year NSBE-CU members havehadapotluckdinner,bowlingnightandgamenight,andothersocialactivities.
