Introduction

Cornelius Ward Friend was born in Western Maryland in 1804. Cornelius was the

son of John Friend Jr. (1764 to 1849) and Elizabeth Ward (1778 to 1845) as well as

grandson of John Friend Sr. (1728 to aft 1808), founder of Friendsville, MD. Cornelius

grew up on the family farm known as “Friend’s Delight” in the Sang Run area of

Allegany (Garrett) County, Maryland. Cornelius would marry Sarah Kemp1 and

together, they traveled to Carroll County, Ohio to begin a new life and family. Trouble

would soon enter the lives of Cornelius and Sarah. Cornelius, who was active in the

local government, had signed a “security (money) bond” for the county. Unfortunately,

the sheriff of Carroll County absconded with the funds. Cornelius was imprisoned for a

short time, for he was responsible for funds and unable to repay this debt. Elijah Friend,

brother of Cornelius, would travel from Maryland to Ohio on horseback and gain his

brother’s release through the governor of Ohio.2 Cornelius and his family returned to

Western Maryland with few possessions.

Cornelius Ward Friend would prosper once again when back in Western

Maryland. Cornelius is listed in the US Census as a hunter and then a farmer, yet, he

would be much more than an average farmer. Cornelius became a large-scale stock

raiser, Justice of the Peace and owner of both a grog and grocery shop. Cornelius

remained in the Friendsville area the majority of his life. In his later years, Cornelius

moved to Preston County, WV and built a fine home. Cornelius Ward Friend passed

away just a few months before his eightieth birthday. Cornelius was returned to

Friendsville where he rests, with Sarah, in the Blooming Rose Cemetery.

There are no known photographs of Cornelius Ward Friend, or of his wife, Sarah

Kemp. We are fortunate that Cornelius Ward Friend lived a long and full life. Many of

Cornelius’ descendents still live in the Friendsville area and have generosity donated

family Bibles, marriage records, photographs and family histories to the Friend Family

Association of America (FFAA) Library. This book is a continuation of the works

started by Patty (Friend) Thompson’s “John Friend Sr. of Friendsville, MD” (2007) and

Patrick T. Smith’s, “John Friend, Jr. of “Friend’s Delight” Sang Run, Maryland (2007).

We have attempted to chronicle the life of Cornelius Ward Friend and his descendents in

order to preserve this information.

Thompson Allegany County Maryland Land Records Book 12, page 723-724 At the request of William Browning this deed was recorded October 2nd 1855. This indenture made this 25th day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty five between Cornelius W. Friend and Sarah Friend his wife of Allegany County in the State of Maryland of the one part and William Browning of the same County and State aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Cornelius W. Friend and Sarah Friend, his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred and twenty five dollars current money of the United States to them in hand paid by the said William Browning at and before the insealing and delivery of those present the receipt of which they do hereby acknowledge given granted bargained and sold aliened enfeoffed released conveyed and confirmed and by these present do give grant bargain and sell alien enfeoff release convey and confirm unto the said William Browning his heirs and assigns forever all that tract or parcel of land lying and being in Allegany County aforesaid called Sangton it being a resurvey made by virtue of or Special warrant of Escheat obtained out of the western shore land office of the State of Maryland to resurvey and effect Lot number four thousand one hundred and three (4103). Beginning for the ?? the original beginning of the aforesaid lot numb four thousand one hundred and three and running thence with the lines thereof North fifty six degrees, East eight perches to a bounded locust sapling near a cherry, North sixty four degrees West one hundred perches to a dead walnut. South fifty six degrees West eighty perches to a hickory bush marked with some notches then by or straight line to the beginning containing fifty (50) acres more or less which said tract of land was granted to the said Cornelius W. Friend by John Hoye by deed bearing date the twenty seventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty seven and recorded in Liber H B No. 3 folio five hundred and seventy five & six, one of the land records of Allegany County together with all and singular the buildings and improvement advantages here determined and appurtenances thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining and all the estate right title and interest trust property claim and demands whatever at law and in Equity of them the said Cornelius W. Friend and Sarah Friend, his wife of in and to the same to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land above mentioned and described and hereby sells and conveys with the appurtenances thereunto belonging unto him the said William Browning his heirs and assigns forever. And the said Cornelius W. Friend for himself his heirs and assigns doth hold covenant and agree to and with the said William Browning his heirs and assigns the above described tract or parcel of land unto him the said William Browning his heirs and assigns shall and will forever warrant and defend firmly by these present against all and every person or person claiming any legal right or entitlements from by through under or in trust from him the said Cornelius W. Allegany County Maryland Land Records Book 22, pages 307-308 At the request of Cornelius W. Friend this deed was recorded January 3, 1865. This indenture made this fifteenth day of October eighteen hundred and sixty four, between Mary Van Sickel, wife of John Van Sickel, Mary Kelley wife of A. F. Kelley and Elizabeth Hitchens, of Preston County the State West Virginia and Samuel Hitchens and Kate his wife of Ohio County State aforesaid of the one part and Cornelius W. Friend of Preston County West Virginia of the other part. Witnesseth that the said May Van Sickel, Mary Kelley, Elizabeth Hitchens, Samuel Hitchens and Kate his wife for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred and sixty five dollars current money to them in hand paid by the said Cornelius W. Friend at and before the sealing and delivering of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged. Have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grand bargain and sell, alien, enfoff, release, convey and confirm unto the said Cornelius W. Friend, his heirs and assigns all that lot piece or parcel of land the same being part of a tract of land called “Elder Spring” lying and being in Allegany County State of Maryland and which piece of land hereby bargained and sold is bounded and described as follows; Beginning for the same at the end of the record line of the whole tract called “Elder Spring” and running thence with the line thereof North seven degrees, East on hundred and seventy three perches, West fifty seven perches then North six degrees, West one hundred and sixty two perches then by a straight line to the beginning containing fifty (50) acres more or less. It being the same piece of land which William W. Hoye sold and conveyed to James Ervin by deed bearing the date on the ninth day of June in the year eighteen hundred and thirty two and recorded in Liber A. B. N2, folio 98 and 97, one of the land records aforesaid and which said piece of land the said James Ervin afterwards sold and conveyed to Michael Chriss by deed duly executed and recorded and the said Chriss afterwards sold and conveyed the same to Henry Thomas who has since sold and conveyed the same to Thomas Lewis who has since sold the same to Lewis Britchard by deed of trust recorded in Liber N. B. No. 3 folios 287, 288 one of the land records of Allegany County together with all and singular the rights, privileges, hereditaments and appurtantences thereunto belonging as in any wise appertaining. About the Authors

Patricia Ann (Friend) Thompson was born and raised in Garrett County,

Maryland. Pat is a descendant of John Friend Sr., (Cornelius Ward Friend’s grandfather)

through his sons John Jr. and Charles. Patricia (or Patty) is also a descendant of numerous

established Garrett County families such as Enlow, Harvey, Tasker, Murphy, Upole and

Thrasher. Patty is a Life Member (#889) of the FFAA, currently serving as 1st Vice

President of the organization. Patty’s first book “John Friend Sr. of Friendsville, MD”

(2007) chronicled the life of Cornelius Ward’s grandfather. Patty currently lives in

Frederick County, Maryland with husband, John (Scoop) Thompson and their three dogs.

Patrick T. Smith was born in Oakland, Maryland and grew up in Western

Maryland. Patrick is a graduate of Frostburg State College (B.S.), West Virginia

University (M.S.) and Texas A&M University (Ph.D.). Patrick currently works at the

National Institutes of Health at Bethesda, Maryland as a research chemist. Patrick is a

descendant of John Friend Sr., (Cornelius Ward Friend’s grandfather) through his sons

John Jr. and Joseph. Patrick is also a descendant of numerous established Garrett County

families such as Echard, Frantz Harvey, Hinebaugh, Glotfelty and Wilson. Patrick is

currently the 2nd Vice President of the FFAA as well as a Life Member (#1102) of the

FFAA. Patrick lives in Frederick, Maryland with his wife, Roxanne and daughter

Emma Gustav Smith.
