Welcome to the 11th Cork Lifelong Learning Festival

The festival offers a huge variety of free events across the city, highlighting all the opportunities there are for learning, whatever your age.

Its motto is Investigate, Participate, Celebrate – and the people of Cork have taken that to heart – participating in great numbers by organising events and attending them.

I wish to acknowledge the contribution made by every single person, every group and every organisation to the festival’s success. It is the people of Cork who have made the Lifelong Learning Festival what is has become.

As well as its partnership with Féile an Phobail in Belfast & with the Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival, the festival is reaching out across the world.

During the tenth festival last year we were introduced to EcCoWell - the idea of integrating the strategies of the Learning City, with Healthy City, Green City, Economically Sustainable City to create a blueprint that fosters an improved quality of life for all our people.

EcCoWell is about moving beyond boundaries and encouraging people to work across sectors for the betterment of all. Like the festival, it’s about inclusion.

The EcCoWell Conference in September, a Flagship Gathering event, welcomed over 250 delegates from overseas & all over Ireland to exchange experiences and learn from each other. Its success was honoured by City Council with a Civic Reception.

We are very proud of our festival, which is raising the profile of Cork internationally as it works towards becoming a UNESCO Learning City.

The festival could not happen without the support of the event organisers and generous sponsors. In particular a huge effort is put in by volunteers to make the week a success.

We are very proud in Cork to have a festival of lifelong learning, and we are delighted that the festival has been recognised over the past 12 months as a model of best practice internationally.

This recognition is due to the combined efforts of all involved who have made the festival such a success, from humble beginnings to become an event that includes 500 events and involves as many as 10,000 people.

The festival continues to grow, year after year, and this year is no different. I would encourage as many of you as possible, even those that are busy with organising their own events, to get out and participate in as many events as possible during the week. It is a unique opportunity to try something new, to meet others involved in learning, and to enjoy the experience.

2014 is a significant year as for the first time City of Cork VEC is replaced by Cork Education and Training Board, which was established in July 2013. Cork Education and Training Board now encompasses the former City of Cork VEC and the County Cork VEC, with the Training Division of the former FÁS, all under a new umbrella. It is an exciting time in education and training. As one of the ‘parents’ of the festival with Cork City Council, we are looking forward to the opportunities that this change will offer.

I would like to acknowledge the ongoing commitment of all of the people that make the festival happen, our co-ordinator Tina Neylon, the steering committee chaired by Willie McAuliffe, the sponsors and partners of the festival - but most of all the people on the ground in the various organisations and communities of the city and surrounding areas.

The festival is your festival and its success is your success.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CO-ORDINATOR

The festival has established many cross-sector links over the years so it was easy to bring representatives from Healthy Cities, Cork Environmental Forum, the Economic Development Unit at Cork City Council, and the education sector together to hear about EcCoWell from our Australian guest George Osborne two years ago.

EcCoWell was developed by Peter Kearns of PASCAL International Exchanges (PIE), which emerged from work done on lifelong learning by the OECD - we’ve been a PIE member since 2011.

EcCoWell is not about spending more money – it’s about being more efficient, by building on areas of common interest between sectors. EcCoWell is about integrating ecology, economy (Ec), community, culture (Co), well-being, lifelong learning (Well) to make life better for all.

Last year Peter introduced EcCoWell to Cork during the festival at a seminar in Triskel Christchurch which lead up to one of Cork City’s Flagship Gathering events in September EcCoWell: Cities for the Future: learning from the global to the local.

It was an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with over 250 people from overseas and from all over Ireland, north and south, and to learn from each other. We were thrilled when its success was honoured with a Civic Reception in December.

But that’s not all – as a result of the success of the festival and our involvement with EcCoWell, we are flying the flag for Cork overseas.

Deputy Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Lorraine Kingston, and myself were guests of UNESCO at its first International Conference on Learning Cities in Beijing, China last October. More than 550 delegates attended, representing 160 countries - we were the only Irish.

With a delegate from Finland, I represented Europe on the Drafting Committee for the Beijing Declaration on Building Learning Cities, which was adopted at the conference’s conclusion. Councillor Kingston was invited to be vice-chair at the Closing Ceremony.

Our festival & EcCoWell initiatives were also much admired at the PASCAL Cities Learning Together conference in Hong Kong in November which Denis Barrett, of Cork ETB & our organising committee, was invited to attend.

The consensus there was the unique role played by the continued growth of the festival, with the resulting support across sectors and communities, leading to the development of a ‘culture of learning’ in Cork.

Other cities are keen to learn from and collaborate with Cork – which can only by good for all of us.

Cork now needs to build on this success by taking the next steps in the strategic development of this world class ‘city of learning’ identity.

Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is pleased to support the 11th Cork Lifelong Festival.

QQI very much welcomes the new national developments in Further Education and Training. In particular, the early establishment of the Cork Education and Training Board (CETB) from the former County Cork and City of Cork Vocational Education Committees and the former FÁS Training functions within Cork City and County.

QQI looks forward to working with Cork ETB in these exciting developments in the area of further education and training. We also encourage the development of regional clusters of education which will see University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology work with the further education community in the county in ensuring enhanced

NORTH // SOUTHIn 2009 Cork’s Lifelong Learning Festival formally twinned with Féile an Phobail in Belfast. That relationship continues to flourish and it is gratifying to see it develop beyond the two festivals.

MURALS

Since 2011 when the Mahon Men’s Art Group worked with four artists from Belfast on the mural in the car park next to Blackrock Castle, the mural project has continued. The Mahon group painted a mural just off the Falls Road in Belfast during Féile that year, which incorporates Cork’s coat of arms.

Relationships established then continue and expand. On Horgan’s Quay a mural inspired by the Titanic was created in 2012 by young unemployed men from Mahon working with their counterparts from North Belfast, under the direction of professional Belfast mural artists, Frank Quigley & Michael Doherty. The young men from Mahon

were subsequently invited to Belfast to work with unemployed young men on a community mural about the Titanic, their visit sponsored by Belfast City Council.

During the festival this year mural artist Frank Quigley is in to Cork to oversee work on murals on the Mahon Peninsula Walkway by young unemployed men from Mahon CDP. MARATHONS

Gradually Cork’s City Marathon is creating links with its Belfast equivalent. HSE’s Health Action Zones on the northside of the city together with the Churchfield Trust worked together in 2013 to increase the participation by teams from Cork in Belfast City Marathon, where they were looked after by Féile an Phobail.

That welcome was reciprocated when Kevin Morrison, Youth Development Officer with Féile, brought two relay teams to Cork City Marathon last year. As Kevin says: “It’s all part of forging a partnership, which takes time to develop.”

CURRACHS & OCEAN TO CITY

Kevin Morrison leads Boats Without Boundaries, a project at Féile which grew out of the currach building initiative begun three years ago when young people from Republican & Loyalist communities spent time in Cork with Meitheal Mara. They started on two currachs here, completed them in the North, and launched them during Féile that August. They brought those currachs back to Cork in 2012 & 2013 to take part in the Youth Event at the annual Ocean to City race.

Through funding from the UK’s Heritage Lottery Fund for Boats Without Boundaries, they have built two Lough Neagh cots this year, which they launch in May. They’ll be competing again in Ocean to City. And they are planning a youth regatta in Belfast Docks in 2015 when the Tall Ships will be there. The relationship between Meitheal Mara, its Founding Manager Pádraig O Dúinnín & Féile continues.

SCRIBES

Cork now has its own Scribes, one of the most popular events during Féile an Phobail, It’s an event when writers read from and talk about their work in a relaxed, convivial setting. For the third time, Cork runs Scribes during the festival, bringing writers from different communities in the North together with local writers.

Scribes takes place at An Spailpín Fánac on Friday at 7.30pm – see separate entry.

Cross-border & cross-community initiatives are supported by the festival, Féile an Phobail, Co-operation Ireland’s Cork branch & Cork City Council.

ONE BOOkONE COMMUNITY

One Book, One Community is a Family Reading Project which encourages reading in DEIS schools in Cork. Now in its fifth year, it involves over 1,500 families, with parents reading the chosen book along with their children.

Copies of the book are bought by the Home/School/Community Liaison Co-ordinators and distributed free to the children to take home to read with their families. Activities associated with the book are organised by the HSCL & teachers in the schools, and parents and others in the local community are encouraged to participate in them.

These are the first two talks in a new programme called The Free University: Adult Continuing Education at UCC Spring Lecture Programme. LAUNCH – TRAvELLER HEALTH ROSARY BEADSThe Traveller Visibility Group’s Fairhill Women’s Group has created a seven meter long Rosary beads, depicting their personal experiences, to raise awareness around improving the health status of Travellers. The Rosary beads use the Social Determinants of Health model to tell their message, highlighting many day-to-day factors which affect health.

This work was supported by Jean O’Donoghue (Traveller Community Health Worker) & facilitated by Leanne McDonagh (Cork ETB Art & Creativity Tutor).

The event features the launch of the Rosary beads & its presentation to the Traveller Culture Exhibit in Cork Public Museum, which is curated by the Cork Traveller Women’s Network. The women involved in the work will discuss the development of the Rosary beads & there will be some Traveller cultural activities. Light refreshments. All welcome.

It’s the result of research undertaken over the past year with 78 children & young people from Knocknaheeny. They were involved in this exciting project with two researchers from the School of Applied Social Studies, University College Cork. Having Our Say set out to hear the views of children & young people about the regeneration of their area, using lots of creative methods including focus groups, photography, art & rap.

Join the participants & researchers, local community & youth groups, the City Council & government officials when a summary of the main findings will be presented.

The research was funded by the Department of Children & Youth Affairs, the Department of the Environment, Community & Local Government, the Irish Research Council, and the College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences, UCC.

Danny Morrison is a writer who lives in West Belfast. He’s secretary of the Bobby Sands Trust & until this year was chairperson of Féile an Phobail. He was the national director of publicity for Sinn Fein in the 1980s, served time as an IRA prisoner, and is a well-known political commentator in newspapers, on TV & radio. Since the mid 90s he has concentrated on writing & reviewing. Among his books are the novels West Belfast, On the Back of the Swallow, The Wrong Man; All the Dead Voices, a memoir, & Rebel Columns, a collection of articles. His fourth novel, Rudi: in the Shadow of Knulp, inspired by Hermann Hesse’s 1915 novel, was published last year.

Cónal Creedon is a short story writer, novelist, playwright, and documentary film-maker from Cork. His stage plays include The Trial of Jesus, Glory Be To The Father, Second City Trilogy. Cónal has written over 60 hours of radio drama and his work has been broadcast on RTÉ, BBC Radio 4 & World Service, and by radio stations in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Canada, and the USA. His books include Pancho and Lefty Ride Out, a collection of short stories, and Passion Play, a novel.

Colin Sloan lives in Lisburn and is the author of two novels and three volumes of poetry.

Titus Unlive covers 300 years of Irish history witnessed and narrated through the eyes of an immortal participant, a Huguenot doctor in the retinue of William III.

The Volga German concerns two former soldiers from conflicts years apart, one a Russian who fought for the Germans at Stalingrad, the other an Irish soldier who served in the Lebanon. They trade stories across the refectory table within the confines of a Munich hotel in 1987.

Three volumes of poetry; each marking his stages of development, his sense of place and belonging, his loves and loss, his development as a person. All three poetry books are lavishly illustrated with companion photography.

Gerry Murphy, poet, was born Cork in 1952. His most recent publications are: End Of Part One, New & Selected Poems (Dedalus 2006), My Flirtation With International Socialism (Dedalus 2010). His new collection is due in 2015.

Gerry McCullough was born & brought up in North Belfast & is an award winning short story writer. She has had nearly 70 short stories published, broadcast or collected in anthologies & around 30 poems published in various magazines. In 2005 her story Primroses won the Cuirt International Literary Award and she has won, been short listed, and been commended in a number of other literary competitions since, including the Seán O’Faolain Short Story Competition in Cork.

Gerry’s first novel, Belfast Girls, published by Precious Oil Publications, topped the bestseller list on paid UK Kindle Literary Fiction. Danger Danger, her second, an Irish romantic thriller, was followed by a collection of Irish short stories The Seanachie: Tales of Old Seamus. Angel in Flight, featuring Angel Murphy,‘a strong minded Belfast girl’ was published in 2012. Angel in Belfast, the second Angel Murphy thriller, appeared last June.

An important means of measuring change in the environment is through monitoring bumblebee & butterfly populations. Monitoring also contributes to the conservation of insects & Irish biodiversity. At this workshop Tomás Murray of the National Biodiversity Data Centre will train participants to monitor both groups of pollinators. You’ll also spend a few hours in the field honing your identification skills to become a recorder for the National Biodiversity Data Centre’s monitoring schemes. INTERNATIONAL SPACE APPS CHALLENGEFIRST TIME IN IRELANDThe International Space Apps Challenge is a collaboration, led by NASA, which focuses on space exploration & takes place over 48 hours in cities around the world. This is the first time the Challenge has come to Ireland.

Participants work on challenges that support NASA’s mission directorates under five themes: Earth Watch, Technology in Space, Human Spaceflight, Robotics, Asteroids.
