“FOREVER” WALK SUPPORTS GENERATIONSSARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – Angel Names Association (ANA),an area nonprofit that helps bereaved families across the country, will host its 9th annual Memorial Walk at the Saratoga Spa StatePark on Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. Thisfree family event, held in observance of National Pregnancy Lossand Infant Death Awareness month, aims to increase communityawareness and provide support.Thousands of New York families are affected by child loss eachyear. Annually, there are nearly 30,000 stillbirths in the UnitedStates, and approximately 2,500 SIDs deaths. The MemorialWalk aims to remedy the silence by providing support and un-derstanding.The event includes live music, childrenʼs crafts, light refresh-ments, prizes, and wonderful opportunities to remember a childwhose life touched yours. Additional food items for sale will beprovided by The Long Horn Restaurant and Pub, who has gen-erously offered to donate all proceeds to support ANAʼs missionto assist bereaved families in need.Registration begins at noon at the Columbia Pavilion and thewalk steps off at 1:15 pm. In Adirondack 102 Club: Your Pass-port and Guide to the North Country, Podskoch says, “Since2001, I traveled to all of the 102 towns and villages in the Adiron-dacks gathering stories for my five books on the Adirondack firetowers, the Civilian Conservation Corps camps, and Adirondacklore. In my travels people have taken me in for the night andshared their home, food, and stories. I have met so many won-derful people and seen so many interesting places that I want toshare my experience.” His book, co-authored by representativesfrom the region, sports a two-page spread on each town, with alittle space for the bookʼs owner to jot notes about his/her expe-rience while visiting, and a “passport” corner where the book canbe stamped at a business or municipal building in the given town.In NYS State Senator Betty Littleʼs preface to the work, she says,"It is one thing to say: 'I visited the Adirondacks,' quite another tosay 'I experienced the Adirondacks.' I promise an enriching jour-ney and encourage you to do so with friends and loved ones withthis unique passport in hand. A great adventure awaits!” Arearesidents who contributed town information include CynthiaCameron, Stony Creek; Arthur Wright, Hadley; Bea Evens, LakeLuzerne; Steve Parisi, Warrensburg; Jo Ann Smith, Johnsburg;Donna LaGoy, Chester; Ted Caldwell and Michelle Huck (Bolton);Sylvia Smith and Christine Hayes (Horicon); Margaret Mannix(Lake George); Dr. Stan Cianfarano (Queensbury); PerkyGranger, Thurman.Granger loves the concept of focusing on the small towns of ourregion, and has just distributed to each of eight sites in Thurmana rubber stamp bearing the town logo and a small space for thestamp wielder to enter the date of the visit. Lower Home Cooling Costs And Increased Energy Efficiency(NAPSI)—Energy prices in California are among the highest inthe nation. Fortunately, homeowners in the Golden State andacross the country can beat the heat at home and in their walletswith spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation.“SPF can make your home more comfortable by reducing airleaks and energy consumption, which is good for the environ-ment and good for California,” says Brian West, Director of Mar-keting at Henry Company, based in El Segundo, California.According to the California Energy Commission, heating andcooling accounts for 45 percent of the average energy bill for Cal-ifornia households. SPF insulation helps keep outside air fromentering the home and prevents loss of conditioned indoor air bysealing cracks, seams and joints. Energy savings from SPF canbe significant. An estimated 10 percent of Californiaʼs newly constructed single-family homes in 2013 were insulated with SPF. These SPF-insu-lated homes help reduce CO2 emissions and are expected toremove greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those emittedby 2,700 cars. The annual estimated electricity savings add upto $3.3 million. SPF will also play a key role in Californiaʼs goalof zero net energy consumption for all new homes beginning in2020.SPF insulation can provide additional benefits:• SPF can help reduce mold and mildew growth;• SPF seals cracks and helps keep pollen and dust outside, re-ducing allergens;• As a roofing material on low-sloped or flat surfaces, SPF createsa seamless air and weather barrier, which is critical beneath roof-mounted solar panels; and• Cool-roof coatings can also be easily applied over SPF roofs.Installing SPF to insulate and air-seal attics, crawl spaces andbasements is not a do-it-yourself project. Consumers shouldwork with a professional SPF installer. To learn more about SPFbenefits, visit www.whysprayfoam.org.

Tools And Tricks To Tackle Tough, Cold Weather Yard Work(NAPSI)—The steps you take now to clean up your yard and put it tobed for the next few months can set the tone for a more productivespring.Helpful HintsTry these tips for an easier and greener yard cleanup:• Remove dead leaves and continue to trim and mow your lawn. Trim-ming grass at a slightly lower level and raking up fallen leaves preventmatting under debris and snow.• Ready your lawn for next year. Prevent weeds by seeding barepatches, but give seed enough time to establish itself before really coldweather sets in. Now can also be the right time to fertilize to give yourlawn the nutrients itʼll need to thrive next spring.• Trim dead or diseased limbs. Storm-damaged or lifeless branches canendanger your home and property. Protect trees and shrubs from furtherdamage by using a chain saw to cut cracked, broken, loose or diseasedlimbs close to the trunk or nearest branch. A cordless pole saw is anotheroption to safely trim high branches without a ladder.• Trim those hedges. Trimming hedges can help them keep their shapeuntil they go dormant. Trim hedge sides at a slight angle, with the widestpart close to ground level and tapering slightly at the tip. This providesmaximum sunlight and reduces heavy hedges in the event of stormsand wind damage.• Prepare your tools. Clean, sharp and quality tools make it easier totackle tough yard tasks. Clean caked dirt and debris from shovels andrakes and sharpen chain saws, pole saws and hedge trimmers. Con-sider new tools that make yard work easier. For example, thereʼs a newwave of lithium-ion battery-powered tools that make tackling yard workeasier than ever. Homeowners no longer have to sacrifice power andconvenience with new cordless tools, such as OREGONʼs 40V MAXCordless Tool Systems. They have all the performance of gas-poweredtools, minus the hassles, and, because thereʼs no fuel to spill or toxicemissions, battery-powered tools are the environmentally friendly land-scaping choice.Learn MoreFor further facts on battery-powered tools and to see what products areavailable, visit www.OregonCordless.com or call (888) 313-8665.

CPR Training For Schools(NAPSI)—Kids learning bystander CPR may be the answer toreducing death from the 420,000 cardiac arrests that occur out-side of a hospital each year. Sadly, most of those victims die be-cause bystanders donʼt know how to start CPR or are afraidtheyʼll do something wrong. Further complicating the issue arethe disparities among Latinos and African Americans, who are30 percent less likely to have bystander CPR performed on themin an emergency, according to a study in the American Heart As-sociation journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Out-comes. People who live in lower-income, African-Americanneighborhoods are 50 percent less likely to have CPR performed.Fortunately, the American Heart Association (AHA) trains stu-dents, teachers and parents in CPR via its CPR in Schools ini-tiative to help eliminate these inequities, exposing lifesaving skillsto millions at a young age.A recent study learned that residents of high-risk neighborhoodsbelieve teaching children about lifesaving CPR and then havingthem share this knowledge with their families and friends is keyto spreading the message.“Our continued research shows disparities exist in learning andperforming CPR and we are ready to move beyond documentinggaps to finding solutions to fix them,” said Dianne Atkins, profes-sor of Pediatrics at the University of Iowa. “School is a greatequalizer, which is why CPR in schools is an integral part of thesolution and will help increase bystander CPR across all com-munities and save more lives,” she added.Several states now require all students be trained in psychomotorskill-based CPR before graduating from high school. That meansmore than a million students trained in CPR each year, whichmeans victims of cardiac arrest have a greater chance at gettingthe help they need before paramedics arrive. To learn more about CPR in Schools legislation, go tohttp://beCPRsmart.org. To learn more about CPR in Schools ini-tiatives, call (877) AHA-4CPR or visit www.heart.org/CPRin-Schools.

TIPS ON KEEPING CHILDREN SAFER AROUND DOGS(NAPSI)—Those who donʼt believe dog bites pose a seriousproblem in the U.S. are barking up the wrong tree.Consider the following:• An estimated 4.7 million dog bites occur in the U.S. each year.
• Nearly 800,000 of those bites require medical care.
• The insurance industry pays more than $1 billion in dog-biteclaims each year.
Fortunately, there are steps that parents can take to reduce therisk of problems when children and dogs interact. The first is to educate their children and supervise them whenthey are around dogs. Studies have found that the No. 1 dog-bite prevention measure is education. Children who understandhow to act around dogs, how to play with dogs, when to leavedogs alone and how to properly meet a dog are much less likelyto be bitten.
What can parents do?To help parents supervise their children when around dogs, here are some safe rules of behavior for kids, suggested by theAccident Attorneys Organization:• Donʼt treat a dog unkindly.• Never hit, kick, slap or bite a dog or pull on his ears, tail orpaws.• Donʼt bother a dog when she is busy.• Never bother dogs with puppies or dogs that are playing withor guarding toys, eating or sleeping. Always leave service dogsalone while they are working.• Donʼt approach a dog you donʼt know.• Never approach a dog that is tied up, behind a fence or in acar.Always make slow movements, set things down carefully anddonʼt run when youʼre around dogs, as this gets them excitedand they may accidently hurt you.
What can dog owners do?Here are some tips for dog owners that can help to reduce therisk of problems:
• Supervise your dog.Dogs left on their own may feel uncertain and defensive, oreven overly confident, and this poses risks to your dog, as wellas to other people and dogs.• Train and socialize your dog.Be sure your dog interacts with and has good manners aroundall members of the family, the public and other animals. Basictraining is as important for the owner as it is for the dog, andsocialization is the key to a well-adjusted adult dog.
The Accident Attorneys Organization has created a download-able safety guide for dog owners and parents. It also explainsthe laws governing dog bites. For a copy, visit www.accidentat-torneys.org.
