Membership is open to any business or profes- sional person or retiree who resides in Corinth, Hadley, Lake Luzerne, Greenfield area. Currently the Corinth Rotary Club meets Thursday at 1 PM at Dangoʼs on Palmer Ave. in Corinth. The Club would like input from anyone interested in helping make our communities better places to live and work. Would an evening or breakfast meeting be easier to attend than the current luncheon meeting? Please contact Bill Davis, President of the Corinth Rotary Club with your recommendations or for more de- tailed information regarding Rotary at 654-6848. AS OUR 18TH SEASON comes to end, we want our community to know how much it costs to run a Youth Football Program. We have come a long way since 1996; a helmet cost $50, today $150; shoulder pads cost $20, today $60; pants cost $10, today $30. This year it cost us $1000 for chin straps and mouth guards only! We now have to recondition helmets every year which cost over $1000, we have to buy 5-10 helmets every year now, be- cause after 10 years they are thrown away. We have to pay for storage at $1100 and insurance at $650 a year. So, before we start our season, it will cost us about $3000, and thatʼs before we even size our players and order equipment. Our success has al- ways been selling frozen foods, which has kept the cost to the parents at a minimum. It cost about $125 per player and cheer- leader each year. I take pride in making sure our kids are safe and look good in our program and in our league, we believe the kids, parents and community deserve that. We do this every year starting from nothing. We have opened the door for so many kids from surrounding communities who donʼt offer a football program, but then again “We are the Gateway to the Adirondacks”, so we open our arms to anyone who wants to play football, and we also take care of those kids who canʼt. We also let the school borrow 6 helmets this season, and for that I am proud to be a na- tive Corinthian. A big thanks to Jenna Brooks, our parents & all the volunteer coaches for their dedication to Corinth Youth Foot- ball. Group Practices Hands-On Environmental Clean-UpA local group called Friends of the Kayaderosseras believes in doing environmental clean-ups,

rather than just talking about them. Two times each year the volunteer organization conducts clean-ups of some of the public access sites along the Kayaderosseras Creek and its tributaries. It is timefor the Fall Clean-up, to improve the creekside environment before winter sets in and the snowflies. Members of the public with the same “can do” attitude are invited to grab their work glovesand assemble at Ballston Spaʼs Kelley Park Pavilion at 9am on Saturday, November 2nd. In caseof significant rain, the work day will take place the following Saturday, November 9th, at the sametime and place. This season volunteers will be conducting clean-ups on nine sites in the wa-tershed – maps of the area/sites will be provided. Blue Neils, the groupʼs Conservation Director, observed that the several yearʼs of effort are showing signs of progress. As the Creek environmentgets cleaner, less trash is being deposited along itʼs banks. “We are winning the battle,” said Neils.Transportation to each of the sites will be provided. Anyone that would like to volunteer is remindedto wear weather and task-appropriate clothing (long pants, long sleeved shirts, boots, etc.) Includinga sturdy pair of work gloves (preferably leather). Lunch will be provided at Kelley Park at 12:30pm. For more information, or if you have a question, please contact Blue R Neils at (518) 275-6928– mobile: [email protected] (preferred).

Press ReleaseIssued by Town of Corinth

Regarding the Proposed Service Award Program for Active Volunteer Members of the

Town of Corinth EMS

Registered voters, who have resided in the Town of Corinth forat least 30 days, will be eligible to vote in favor of or against theestablishment of a financial incentive program (called a serviceaward program) for active volunteer members of the newly cre-ated Town of Corinth EMS on Election Day, Tuesday, November5, 2013, between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. There willbe a public information meeting held at Town Hall on Wednesday,October 30, 2013 at 4:30 PM about the proposed program. A rep-resentative of Penflex, Inc. will explain the program and answerquestions about the program. Penflex is under contract with theState Comptrollerʼs Office to be the administrator of these pro-grams.

New York State political subdivisions have been able to establishservice award programs for their volunteer firefighters since1990, and volunteer ambulance workers since 1994. Serviceaward programs are intended to help recruit and retain active vol-unteer firefighters and ambulance workers. Locally, similar pro-grams for volunteer ambulance workers have been establishedby the Town of Wilton, Town of Queensbury, Town of LakeGeorge and the Town of Malta. The Village of Corinth and Villageof Lake George have established programs for their volunteerfirefighters.

In operation, the program is like a simple defined contributionpension plan (like an IRA or 401(k)). For each year a volunteermember of the Town of Corinth EMS earns a year of servicecredit (up to 40 years of service credit are allowed), a $700 con-tribution is deposited by the Town to the volunteerʼs ServiceAward Program account. These contributions are invested andgrow with interest over time. The value of the volunteerʼs accountis payable to the volunteer on or after age sixty-five (65). To earna year of service credit, a volunteer must earn a minimum of 50points under the New York State mandated point system. A vol-unteer earns points by attending drills, being on call to respondto calls, responding to calls, completing training courses, attend-ing company meetings, completing a one year term as an officerand for other line-of-duty activities. Volunteers may also earnservice credit for service rendered during calendar years 2013,2012 and for service rendered in 2011 but after the establishmentof the in the Town of Corinth EMS on February 24, 2011. Volun-teers who become disabled before age 65 are paid their programaccount balance. Upon the death of a 100% vested volunteer be-fore age 65, the volunteerʼs vested account balance is paid tothe beneficiary.

Calendar year 2014 will be the first year that volunteers have theopportunity to earn the required points under the Service AwardProgram Point System. In calendar year 2015, Town residentswill begin to fund the Program. For current volunteers, the annualcost of the program is estimated to be as much as $12,000, in-cluding the cost of administration. The tax impact to residents isestimated to be around $0.022 (roughly two cents) per $1,000 ofassessed property value. This means for a property assessed at$150,000, the cost of this program is $3.33 per year (increase inannual Town tax of $3.33). After five (5) years the cost of the Pro-gram for current volunteers is estimated to decrease to about$7,000 when the cost of paying Service Awards for active volun-teer member service before calendar year 2014 will be fully paid(i.e., the program will cost roughly $2.00 for a property assessedat $150,000).

If the program is approved by the residents of the Town, it will beadministered by the Office of the NYS Comptroller. The NYSComptroller invests the program funds through Glens Falls Na-tional Bank, the Program Trustee. Penflex, Inc. of Latham, NewYork is under contract to be the Program Administrator.

IS YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER?(NAPSI)—Safety on the road is important all year round, but winter weather calls for extracaution behind the wheel to keep you and your passengers safe.Thatʼs why many auto safety experts including Discount Tire, the worldʼs largest tire and wheelretailer, urge motorists to keep road safety top of mind this winter and switch to tires specificallydesigned for cold weather driving.

Winter tires are designed for driving in temperatures of 45 degrees or below. If thereʼs anychance youʼll encounter snow, ice, slush, black ice or wet roads on a consistent basis, youshould prepare your car for these conditions.Often, drivers arenʼt aware that commonly used all-season tires have a rubber compound thatgradually hardens when temperatures dip below 45 degrees. When this happens, brakingand turning are compromised as there is decreased road traction and less grip. Itʼs also im-portant to note that snow and ice often pile up in the tire grooves and tread blocks on all-sea-son tires, which can impact your vehicleʼs performance.Winter tires are made with higher-silica compounds. This allows the tire to deliver much bettertraction, which reduces skidding and improves braking. In fact, in temperatures below 45 de-grees, winter tires can provide 25 to 50 percent more traction than all-season tires. In addition, the tread block design includes thousands of very small interlocking slits—known as sipes—to provide extra road-biting edges for improved winter traction.“Every aspect of a winter tire has been engineered to provide the best performance in winterconditions and temperature fluctuations while maintaining traction on any surface,” said MarkMarrufo of Discount Tire. “The winter tire advantage will maximize your safety and providepeace of mind during the winter months.”

Five Tips for Winter Tire Safety1. Replace your all-season tires with winter tires for driving in temperatures of 45 degrees orbelow. Make sure to replace all four tires with winter tires to avoid an unsafe traction mis-match.2. Donʼt forget the wheels when switching to winter tires. Having a set of wheels specificallyfor your set of winter tires will save money in the long run.3. Check tire inflation pressure regularly and donʼt forget the spare. Underinflated or over-in-flated tires may result in poor handling, uneven tread wear and poor fuel consumption.4. Rotate your tires at least every 6,000 miles or earlier if irregular or uneven wear develops.5. Make sure the tire shop that gets your tires ready for cold temperatures torques the lugnuts to the proper specifications for your vehicle. For more facts about winter tire safety or to find a Discount Tire store, visitwww.discounttire.com.

Longest roads in North AmericaRoad trips are popular all year long, and driving the same roads during various seasonscan yield entirely different views along the way. Many scenic highways can take travelersacross the country, and for those drivers interested in traveling the longest roads in NorthAmerica, there are two options at the ready. At 4,990 miles (8,030 kilometers), the Trans-Canada Highway is the longest roadwayin North America. It is a federal-provincial highway system that travels through all 10provinces of Canada between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A person can travel allthe way from Newfoundland to British Columbia on the highway. The system was ap-proved in 1949 and the highway officially opened in 1962. Drivers on the highway willeasily recognize the green-and-white maple leaf route markers.Drivers south of the Canadian border can travel along U.S. Route 20. Spanning 3,365miles (5,415 kilometers), Route 20 is an east-west highway and the longest road in theUnited States. In the east, Route 20 terminates in Boston, Mass. In the west, it ends atNewport, Ore. The "0" in the route's number indicates it is a coast-to-coast route. Route20 travels through Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana,Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts. Although the length of U.S. Route 6 was shortened when California renumbered its high-ways in 1964 and a portion of the route was transferred to another highway, the road isthe longest continuous roadway in the United States. It is not considered a majortranscontinental route because Route 6 was gradually put together from other routesover time. But it still can get drivers from Massachusetts to California. www.carchaser.net
