Language Arts 600 Fundamentals Language Arts 600 Fundamentals continues to build on the sequential development and integration of communication skills in four major areas—reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It most specifically focuses on deepening and furthering students' understanding in the following ways:
Reading develops students’ reading skills, including the identification of main ideas, supporting details, sequence, and facts and opinions; introduces more advanced reading skills, showing students how to analyze propaganda, make inferences, and determine the author’s authority; shows students how to identify parts of speech in sentences, with emphasis on kinds and uses of nouns, pronouns, and verb tenses; develops students’ capacities for identifying basic elements of narrative prose; enhances students’ abilities for reading newspaper articles and informative nonfiction; helps students develop basic literary comprehension skills through the reading of short stories, nonfiction pieces, and poetry.
Writing develops students’ understanding of sentence structure, providing hands‐on experience with subject‐verb agreement, participles, and phrases; emphasizes parts of speech and their roles, including adjectives, nouns, and verbs; familiarizes students with roots, affixes, and basic word relationships, including homonyms, synonyms, and antonyms; develops students’ vocabulary and spelling skills; gives students the opportunity to develop their abilities in writing paragraphs, business letters, poetry, and short stories; guides students through planning, organizing, writing, and revising a report.

Language Arts 600 In Language Arts 600, students will delve into texts that span the genres of narrative fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, and informational texts to build reading, writing and thinking skills. Students will also develop their writing skills as they focus on the six traits while producing narrative, argumentative, and explanatory compositions, as well as creative pieces including poetry. The course concludes with students completing a full research report. With a strong emphasis on close reading instruction, writing and thinking activities, as well as speaking and listening tasks, this course will help students expand their understanding of literature while building 21st century skills. Multimedia and interactive elements are built into every lesson to ensure a high‐level of student engagement. To become critical consumers of text, they need to be exposed to increasingly more complex texts to which they apply those skills. In English language arts, that critical content is both rigorous and relevant and includes high‐quality contemporary works as well as the classics of literature. English 600 students will be enriched as they expand their skills and confidence in English language arts through a comprehensive study that includes the following units:
Unit 1 – What a Character! Part 1: In this unit, students closely examine elements that make characters come to life in literature. Students study different characters in both literature and informational text. Additionally, students continue to build on reading strategies, such as making predictions, comparing and contrasting, and summarizing, to increase comprehension of grade‐level text. Writing projects are integrated into this unit to further develop skills in both grammar and writing. Unit 2 – What a Character! Part 2: This unit builds on the skills learned in Unit 1. Students learn how authors reveal the plot of a story or drama in a series of episodes. Students will have a deeper understanding of mood and character types and learn how characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution. Students are exposed to different text types including drama and epic poetry. The close reading strategy of Trailing the Text is introduced to deepen students thinking on informational text. An informative compare/contrast writing project is integrated into the unit in order for students to demonstrate a deep level of understanding characters in different literary genres. Unit 3 –Journeys: In this unit, students read Robert Frost’s classic poem “A Road Not Taken”, as well as additional examples of poetry forms. Students learn about the power of words and analyze how authors use language to communicate ideas. A more in‐depth study of poetry forms and characteristics follow. In the second part of this unit, students are introduced to their first in‐depth, multi‐lesson, formal writing project on explanatory essays. Students apply their knowledge of word choice, transitional words, as well as grammar and writing skills to produce clear and coherent writing. Unit 4 –Journeys into Literature: Students delve more deeply into literature by closely analyzing exposition in both fiction and non‐fiction text. Students analyze the different plot elements that move text toward a resolution. Additionally, students compare and contrast texts from different genres in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics. The unit includes continued focus on building grammar skills including varying sentence structures as well as using parts of speech correctly. The unit concludes with students applying the knowledge gained in this unit to write a well‐organized, detailed narrative that unfolds naturally and logically to a well‐written conclusion. Unit 5 – Controversy in our World: Students begin to identify argument and specific claims found in news media. Students distinguish facts from opinion as well as learn how to identify if an author is pro or con on a position. Students delve deeper into media by identifying bias, propaganda, and fallacies. Students interpret information presented in diverse media and formats (text and graphics). Students will also learn and practice skills and strategies for publication of effective and accurate writing. Lastly, students prepare for both a discussion and debate by explicitly drawing on nonfiction text and developing specific questions with elaboration and detail to pose to a collaborative group. Unit 6 – Argument, Claims, and Evidence: Students build on the skills used in unit 5 to identify argument, claims and evidence by completing a close read of nonfiction texts. Students identify both the position and counter position of an argument and examine textual evidence that supports both sides. Students learn what makes a strong claim and how to support these claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. In the second part of this unit students complete an in‐depth, multi‐unit formal writing project on an argumentative essay. Students learn how to craft a thesis statement and support this with strong claims and textual evidence.
Core Courses and Electives

Unit 7 – Perspectives: In Unit 7 students learn that important issues, such as civil rights and environmentalisms can be looked at from different perspectives. Students learn how to develop informed opinions by gathering evidence from credible sources. Students integrate information presented in different media and formats to develop a coherent understanding on a complex topic. Writing projects, including a reflection and open‐letter, are integrated into the unit to continue to develop students writing skills. The unit concludes with students analyzing a complex issue and present this information visually in the form on an infographic. Unit 8 ‐ Research and Report Writing: In the last unit students learn that research and inquiry deepens understanding on topics. Credible sources are essential to research and students are taught to synthesize this information to produce an evidenced‐based research paper. Students complete an in‐depth, multi‐unit formal research project beginning with topic selection. Students then gather data from several sources and craft a thesis statement. Students are taught to create an outline and produce a final research project answering an essential question. Information is not only presented in proper written form, but also in a multimedia presentation practicing skills learned related to digital media.
