To teachers (or facilitators), allowing to utilize this rich content to enhance the learning experience Aggregating conceptually related content into complex learning objects Discovering relationship between content in disparate systems Allowing to deliver engaging and relevant courses According to the W3C, "The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries Sharing and connecting information across the global network of the web Trasparently delivering relevant link to heterogeneous resources by integrating the resources under a common Linked Data representation Automatically inferring new knowledge Copyright All right reserved 8 Smart Educational Data Study at the OU by Open University; a mobile app LOD enabled Using Linked Open Data potentiality, in educational contexts, is a matter still open. However, there are tools and platforms allowing to build networked learning objects that users begin to experience. Copyright All right reserved 9 Future: smarter and E-learning is characterized by intense and continuous changes that increasingly directs toward the open learning MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses) are probably the most obvious example More and more initiatives aimed at creating semantic information objects for learning and teaching to be provided, in open mode, online LOD principles are increasingly being adopted by many institutions (universities, schools, research centers,...), in contexts and with the most different purposes. Foresee future developments is not easy, because we are still in a very early stage but the process has begun Is in this context that i-LIKE has been envisioned Copyright All right reserved 10 i-LIKE innovative - Learning In Knowledge Environment i-LIKE is a joint R&D effort aimed at developing an innovative e-Learning platform through the integration and leveraging the best of: e-Learning Knowledge Management Web 2.0 (user generated content) Semantic Web by Copyright All right reserved 11 Strengths Open Source, to get the best of the technology offer and deliver value to Customers Hybrid Architectures, in which to combine and integrate different systems Semantic Web and Linked Open Data paradigm An innovative concept of Learning Platform -the system is highly configurable; -the architecture is flexible and functional; -the customization costs are minimized. Copyright All right reserved 12 i-Like: Architecture Copyright All right reserved 13 i-Like: Components Moodle + Mahara = Mahoodle: The worlds most popular LMS + E-Portfolio integrated by their communities, allowing to join didactics and Social Learning. And is all Open Source! Semantic Engine: Analyze metadata and texts, look up the information, enriching metadata. And... give suggestions! BigBlueButton: Always online but... together! The Virtual Classroom for lessons by videoconference to interact with the teacher and with other students Liferay: An Enterprise Portal, Open Source and configurable, because i-Like is not only i-Like, but can also integrate other applications: just write portlets. QUARK: Build courses, metadata learning modules, manage students and training Copyright All right reserved 14 i-Like: Entering module metadata Compose courses in Moodle get access to Quark and... find them down there! You need only to enter the metadata and send them to the semantic engine for the enrichment Copyright All right reserved 15 i-Like: Portal Access the Portal: from there you can get to anything you want Copyright All right reserved 16 i-Like: E-Portfolio Use the E-Portfolio to create your resume, share your experiences with other students, define your learning goals, store your files, and more Copyright All right reserved 17 i-Like: Take courses on Moodle Enter in Moodle: there is something new! Enter the course you are subscribed and move the mouse over the title of the didactic module of the course you want to know more: the word suggestions appears Copyright All right reserved 18 i-Like: Get suggestions Click on the suggestions link, the Portal asks the semantic engine to find enriched metadata and returning them to be displayed in a portlet, right next window: you just have to scroll in. And there are more resources about the module you have to learn! Copyright All right reserved 19 Conclusions "The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries Sharing and connecting information across the global network of the web Copyright All right reserved 20 Many thanks for your attention!
