IntroductionThe most important things you can pass on to the children in your life are a love for God and a
foundation of trust and obedience to Him. This is the surest way to start them off on the right foot as
they grow into the remarkable people He created them to be. Through a relationship with Jesus Christ,
children not only receive eternal life, they also develop the character that will help them meet whatever
challenges they encounter with faith, integrity, and confidence.
As you know, a life of obedience is the only truly successful one. If you want to positively influence
your children’s lives and teach them to excel in this world, it is absolutely essential that you teach them
principles from the Word of God. Life Principles: Life Lessons for Kids helps you to do just that in
a way that is fun, meaningful, and memorable for both you and your children. You have an amazing
opportunity to shape your little ones' paths in a way that honors the Lord and plants them firmly on the
road to success. So teach them God’s Word and enjoy the adventure!

God is everywhere“Why have you done this?” the men asked Jonah. They were trying to be heard
over the sound of the strong winds and crashing waves. A great and violent storm was
tossing their boat about. All the men were afraid they would drown.
God had told Jonah to travel to Nineveh. It was a city of evil people who needed to
hear the Lord’s message of forgiveness and repentance. But Jonah did not want to go
to Nineveh. Instead of doing what God had told him, Jonah boarded a ship that was
bound for a completely different city. It was on this journey to the other city that the
Lord caused the storm.
The boat continued to toss, and the sea continued to roar. Jonah cried out, “Pick me
up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will be calm for you. This great storm is
because of me!” But the men were afraid to throw Jonah overboard. They rowed as
hard as they could. They tried to make it to shore. But it was no use. The storm was
too great. The harder the men paddled, the more violent the sea grew. Finally, the men
knew what they had to do. They picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea! Do you
know what happened next? The sea became calm, just as Jonah had said. But God
was not finished with him. As he was bobbing around in the stormy sea, a great fish
came and swallowed Jonah! He was in the belly of the fish for three days and three
nights. Can you imagine how uncomfortable that must have been for Jonah?!? And it
probably smelled, too!
While he was in the belly of the great fish, he realized he should have done what God
had told him to do. But he knew it wasn’t too late to do the right thing. Jonah understood
that God was forgiving and was always with him–even in a giant fish’s stomach! So he
“cried out to the Lord because of his misery and the Lord answered him.”
God heard and answered that prayer. The great fish spat Jonah onto dry land. Then
he went to Nineveh—just like God had told him to do. The evil people in that city
turned from their wicked ways, and the Lord saved them.
We must always remember that we can never run from God. He is always with us.

Jesus can do anything
“Do not bother the Teacher anymore,” someone who had come from Jairus’ house
said to him. “Your daughter is dead.”
These were the last words that Jairus wanted to hear. Only moments before, he had
forced his way through the large crowd to get to Jesus. He knew that if anyone could
heal his daughter, the Son of God could. Even as they were walking to Jairus’ home,
a woman who had been sick simply touched a small part of Jesus robe, and she was
healed! That was amazing! But she was only sick. Was it too late for Jairus’ daughter?
What could Jesus do now? They had just been told the little girl was dead.
“Do not be afraid,” Jesus said to Jairus. “Only believe, and she will be made
well.” They continued to the family’s home. Once they arrived there, everyone was
standing around crying. Jesus went inside with Jairus, the girl’s mother, and the
disciples—Peter, James, and John. At that moment, the Lord took the girl’s hand
and said to her, “Child, get up!” You can probably guess what happened next.
She got up and walked! The Bible says that everyone there was overcome with
great amazement.
Many times, like Jairus, we are afraid. But Jesus tells us that we do not need to
be afraid. We do not need to worry. Instead, the Lord says we must have faith. That
means that we must trust in Jesus and what He said in the Bible. If the Son of God
is powerful enough to raise people from the dead, why should we be afraid of the
things that bother us? Many times in the Bible, we are told not to be afraid. We can
trust Jesus!

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE
FOR GOD!
Tell the Good News“Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight!” the different-looking man
said to the crowd of people. What was so different about him? First, he didn’t wear
the same clothes as everyone else. The Bible says that John the Baptist wore a camel-
hair garment with a leather belt around his waist. The second thing about him that
was unusual was what he ate. He didn’t eat the same kinds of food that other people
ate. He ate locusts (they look like grasshoppers) and honey. But more amazing than
what John the Baptist ate or what he wore was his message to those around him.
John the Baptist was a prophet. He was God’s messenger to the people. It had been
a really long time since the Lord had sent a prophet. As you can imagine, people
from all over came to hear what he had to say. His message was that Christ had come
and was walking among them. In fact, one day John saw Jesus coming toward Him,
and he said “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” This
was a big deal because nearly all of those people had grown up hearing that Jesus
would one day come. Now here was John the Baptist telling them that He was there!
Can you imagine how excited everyone must have been?
You are probably wondering why John called Jesus the Lamb of God. For many
years, people would be forgiven of their sins by killing a lamb that had nothing
wrong with it—no physical problems or blemishes. In a sense, the lamb was perfect.
They had to do this over and over again in order to be forgiven. When Jesus came,
He was like that lamb. God sent His Son as the sacrificial lamb to die for our sins so
that we would not have to. Because of this, we get to live in heaven with God one
day. All we need to do is believe in Jesus! We do not have to dress differently or eat
strange things, like John the Baptist did, for people to listen to us. But just like him,
we are supposed to tell people the good news that Jesus came and died for us so that
we can live in heaven forever!

God Loves Everyone“I must see Jesus,” Zacchaeus thought. “If only I was not so short and could
see over this crowd of people.” At that moment, this very small man had an idea.
Zacchaeus decided to run down the road, ahead of the crowd. Then he would climb
a tree so he could see better. And that is exactly what he did!
Jesus looked up from the crowds that had surrounded Him. He saw Zacchaeus in
the tree. He said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down from there and hurry, because today
I must stay at your house.” So he came down from the tree and welcomed Jesus with
great joy! Then, something interesting happened. All the people who saw what had
happened began to complain. They were upset because Zacchaeus was not liked by
some of the people in the crowd. This was because of the job he held. He collected
people’s money for the government. Some of the other people complained because
Zacchaeus was different from them. Many of the people in the crowd thought, “Why
is Jesus going to stay at the house of a sinner?” But the Lord did not care what
everyone else thought. He loved Zaccheus just the same as He loved everyone else.
Do you know someone who is different than you? Remember that Jesus loves
everyone—He does not have favorites. It does not matter how short or how tall
someone is—or what color skin he or she has. The Lord loves everyone the same.
Jesus wants us to love other people, just as He loves them. Maybe you know
someone others tease because they are different in some way. Go out of your way to
be nice to them and show them the love of Christ.

A Relationship with Jesus is what’s important
“Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to prepare everything by myself?”
Martha complained to Jesus. “Tell Mary to come help me.”
The Lord was visiting the house of these two sisters. While Martha was busy with
all her preparations for the gathering, Mary was simply sitting and listening to Jesus
speak. This upset Martha very much. She wanted the Lord to tell Mary to come and
help her. Instead, Jesus answered her by saying, “Martha, Martha, you are worried
and getting worked up over nothing. Only one thing is important, and Mary has
chosen the best part, and it will not be taken from her.”
Sometimes, we do things to impress others. Sometimes, we do things to get others
to like us. Martha wanted Jesus to be impressed by all of her hard work. Her sister
Mary, on the other hand, simply wanted to spend time with Him. She wanted to
listen to what He had to say. Mary was not trying to impress Jesus with her actions.
She just wanted to be with Him. This is what the Lord meant when He said that Mary
had “chosen the best part.”
Not only does God know everything we do, He knows why we do it. God wants us
to do the right things—and He wants us to do them with the right attitude. He wants
to have a relationship with us where we talk and listen to Him, a relationship where
He talks and listens to us.

faith is better than doubt“Unless I see the nail prints in His hands and put my fingers into them, and put my
hand into His side, I will not believe,” said Thomas to the other disciples.
Only days before, Jesus appeared in their presence. But Thomas was not with
them, so he could not understand how it was possible that their Messiah was alive.
A few days later, they were all together again in a locked room. Suddenly, Jesus
appeared in the room with them! At that moment, the Lord looked at Thomas and
said to him, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand
here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Can you imagine
what must have been going through Thomas’ mind? The young disciple had only
one response, “My Lord and my God!”
What Thomas had is called “doubt,” which means that you have a hard time
believing something. While it is okay to have questions, God wants us to have faith.
That means you have a strong belief in something that you know is right. If you are
like Thomas pray and ask God to give you the ability to trust Him!

Is Anything Too Hard For the Lord?
“Your wife Sarah will have a son,” the man of God said to Abraham. Sarah almost
laughed out loud as she heard this while secretly listening from inside their tent. It
was not that long ago when Abraham had laughed at the same words. What made
this husband and wife laugh? For starters, Sarah and Abraham were very old. In fact,
he was 99 years old and she was 90. At their ages, it seemed impossible for them to
have a child. How could they believe such a story?
At that moment, the Lord spoke to Abraham and asked him why Sarah laughed.
Remember that she did not laugh out loud—no one knew she was listening. The
Lord said, “Is anything too hard for the Lord? When the time is right, I will return
to you, and your wife will have a child.” But Sarah did not want to admit she had
laughed because she was afraid. Can you guess what happened next?
Nine months later, just as the Lord had said, Sarah had a baby boy! Abraham was
100 years old when this happened! The Bible says they named their son Isaac, which
means “he laughs.” This was a good name since both Abraham and Sarah laughed
when God said they would have a baby—and they were full of joy when Isaac was
born. Sometimes, like Sarah and Abraham, we may think that something is too hard
for God to do. But there is nothing too hard for Him. This story is just one of many
amazing things God did in the Bible. And He still does amazing things today!

God Can Use Anyone
Moses could not believe what he was seeing. The bush was on fire, but it was not
burning up. Maybe you have seen a fire in a fireplace before. You know that to keep
it burning, you have to keep putting in more wood. If you do not, the fire goes out,
and all you have left are ashes. Can you imagine seeing what Moses did? It was a
bush burning with a fire that did not burn it up!
The Bible says that God called to Moses from this burning bush. He said to him,
“Moses, Moses! Do not come near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, because
the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Moses was afraid to look at God,
so he hid his face. The Lord then told Moses that he was to speak to Pharaoh, the
leader of the Egyptians, about letting the people of Israel go free. What God asked
Moses to do would be like you or me talking to the President and telling him what
to do! Moses was very afraid that Pharaoh—and even his own people—would not
believe him. He also did not think that he was a very good speaker. Moses asked God
to use someone else who could talk to Pharaoh better. But God did not want to use
anyone but Moses—and that is exactly what He did! After many signs, wonders, and
plagues, Moses and the Hebrew people were finally free from the Egyptians. (You
can read the book of Exodus in the Bible to learn the rest of this amazing story and
to find out what happened next.)
God used Moses, a shepherd who was afraid to speak in front of people, to free an
entire nation. Nothing has changed today. God can still use anyone to get His work
done. It does not matter if you are not a strong speaker like Moses. No matter what
kind of problem you may have, God just wants you to trust Him! He promises to do
wonderful things in and through your life!

Be Strong and Have Courage
Joshua and the Israelites were packing their belongings early in the morning. They
had just finished camping by the Jordan River for three days. Joshua was waiting for
the spies he had sent out to return. “Truly the Lord has delivered all the land into our
hands,” said the two spies. “All the people of that country are afraid of us.”
The Israelites had something very important with them called the Ark of the
Covenant. It held the tablets that God gave to Moses with the Ten Commandments
on them. God told Joshua to tell the priests, who were the only ones allowed to carry
the ark, “Come and hear the words of the Lord your God. By this, you will know that
the living God is with you and He will drive out all of the people in the land God has
promised you. Take twelve men, one from each tribe.” He told them, “As soon as the
feet of the priests touch the bottom of the river the Lord will cut it off and we will walk
across on dry ground.” So Joshua, who was very strong and full of courage, told them
it was time to cross. They set out, and God did just what He said He would do. Joshua,
the priests, and all the people of Israel crossed the Jordan River on dry ground!
Did you know that God told Joshua three times to have courage and be strong?
The Lord wanted Joshua to know that he did not need to be afraid of anything. God
promised to fight all of his battles for him. What are you afraid of today? The Lord
wants you to know that you do not have to be afraid. He loves you and wants to take
care of you. We may not be strong enough but God is, and He wants us to be strong
and have courage.

God Will Show You What to Do
“Lord, how can I save Israel?” Gideon asked the angel God had sent to him. “My
family is the weakest of all of the twelve clans, and I am the weakest of all of my
family.” Gideon thought the Lord had picked the wrong person. He could not believe
that God wanted to use him to save Israel from the evil nation that was attacking
them. “I will be with you the whole way,” replied the Lord. Gideon still was not sure
that God had the right person. So he had an idea.
Gideon said to Him, “If you have chosen to use me to save Israel like you have
said, I will put out a piece of wool on the ground. If there is dew on it and the ground
is dry, then I know that you have chosen me to deliver Israel as you have said.” The
next morning, when Gideon woke up, he ran out to see if the piece of wool was wet.
When he picked it up and squeezed it, enough water came out to fill a bowl. You
might think that was enough proof for Gideon. Well, it was not. Gideon was still
unsure if God really had chosen him to do something so important and help so many
people. So he asked the Lord not to be mad at him and said he wanted to try again to
make sure God had really chosen him to save Israel. “This time I will put the piece
of wool out,” said Gideon to the Lord, “and if it is dry and the ground is wet I will
know that You have chosen me to do this important job.” So that is exactly what he
did. And this time, the wool was dry and the ground was very wet. Gideon knew then
that the Lord had chosen him out of all the people of Israel. He was very glad that
God showed him what to do.
Like Gideon, we may sometimes feel confused about something. The Lord wants
to show us what to do. And more importantly, He wants us to trust Him and believe
what He says!

Prayer is Important“Hannah, why are you crying?” asked Elkanah, her husband. “Why will you not
eat? Why are you so sad?” His wife was crying because she could not have children.
Every year Elkanah and Hannah went to the city of Shiloh to offer sacrifices to God.
He would always offer double offerings for her because he loved his wife so much
and wanted to have a baby. Some people made fun of Hannah because she was not
able to have any children. This made her very sad. No one likes to be made fun of,
and to be teased about not being able to have children was especially hard. Although
these things made Hannah sad, it did not stop her from praying.
Every year she would go into the house of the Lord and would pray for God to
give her a son. “Oh Lord, please look upon my sadness and remember me, bless me
with a son. I will give him to the Lord all of the days of his life and his hair shall
never be cut.” One day Eli, the priest at Shiloh, came over to Hannah and told her to
go in peace and that God would bless her and honor her request. It was not long after
this that she had a baby boy and named him Samuel.
When he was old enough, Hannah took her son to the house of the Lord and did
exactly as she promised the Lord. She presented Samuel to Eli the priest and said,
“Remember me? I am the woman who stood here praying that the Lord would bless
me with a child. I promised I would dedicate all the days of his life to the Lord.” So
she left Samuel with Eli so that she could fulfill her promise to God. Just like Hannah
did, the Lord wants us to talk to Him in prayer because He loves and cares for us.
Our needs are important to God.

OUR NEEDSARE IMPORTANT
TO GOD.
OBEY GODKing Nebuchadnezzar looked out over the large crowd of people bowing down
to the golden idol he had made. The king had declared that when the music began,
everyone was to worship before the giant statue. As far as Nebuchadnezzar could
see, people were obeying him. Then, he received word that Shadrach, Meshach,
and Abed-Nego—three young men whom the king had picked himself to help
govern the nation—were not bowing down to his creation. Upon hearing the news,
Nebuchadnezzar became very angry.
The king called for them and decided to give the three men one more chance before
throwing them into a raging fire. “If you do not worship,” he said, “you shall be cast
into the furnace. And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?” Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed-Nego told the king they did not have to answer him, and their
God would save them from the fire. Even if He did not save them, they would not be
disobedient to the Lord. The king was not happy with their response. Nebuchadnezzar
ordered the furnace to be made seven times hotter than it already was. Then Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abed-Nego were tied up and thrown into the fire.
But soon, the king noticed that nothing was happening to the three men in the
fire. And not only that, Nebuchadnezzar noticed there was a fourth person in the fire
with them! The king said the other person in the fire looked like “the Son of God!”
After this, Nebuchadnezzar commanded the men to come out of the fire. When they
did, they were not burned at all! Seeing this, the king praised the one true God. Our
heavenly Father takes care of His children and wants us to obey Him—even when
we are scared. God will be with us, just like He was with Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-Nego in the fiery furnace.
