“COVET”
SIMILARITIES
DIFFERENCES
The tenth commandment deals with the wrongful desire of the heart
which is COVETOUSNESS, from which stealing can arise. It forbids great selfishness and greed arising from a great desire for richness and
power, and even envy to the success of others
(CFC 1147).
TWO THINGS
DIFFERENCES
ENVY GREED
the wanting of what somebody else has
such as good fortune, success and etc. It is this feeling that leads us to do covetous
acts.
the unreasonable and excessive
desire to accumulate wealth
and property for the self.
TO FIGHT THE TWO THINGS
DIFFERENCES
ENVY GREED
BE CONTENTED. Be happy for other people. Think about other people.
Be generous to other people. Share what you have.
REMEMBER
DIFFERENCES
Jesus asks us to live under the loving providence of the
Father. We must not excessively worry about our
daily needs because God the Father knows what we need. Thus, we should not be more selfish with what we have for
we should also consider other’s good and benefits (cf.
CCC 2404).
IN SUMMARY
DIFFERENCES
What do we need to understand about the 7th and 10th commandments?
What values do the 7th and 10th commandments teach us?
What actions can we do to live the 7th and 10th commandments?
IN SUMMARY
DIFFERENCES
Both commandments remind us about what the proper and improper way
of handling relationships with others as regards properties and
possessions.
IN SUMMARY
DIFFERENCES
The seventh commandment
focuses on the acts and outward results of one’s greediness -
that is, taking the possessions and
properties of others. We should respect public properties
and facilities.
IN SUMMARY
DIFFERENCES
The tenth commandment focuses more on the inward act or desire of the heart to get more possessions
which can result to stealing.
IN SUMMARY
DIFFERENCES
The seventh and tenth commandments remind us to respect God’s creation.
Plants, animals, and other natural resources are meant for the good of
everyone including the future generations. Thus, the use of natural resources should be limited by our
concern for others and for the future generations (cf. CCC 2415).
1. The seventh commandment forbids desiring badly the property of other people.
2. Cheating is a form of stealing.
3. Vandalism goes against the 7th commandment.
4. Covetousness guides us to appreciate and be contented with what we have.
5. Christ reminds us that we should be generous with what we have, since all of creations was intended to be shared by all humanity.
