Leveraging Baker Resources for a Job Search in Finance

So, you’re thinking of getting a job in Finance? Things I could imagine you might want to review:• Overviews of industry & careers • Where to find the latest trends and news• Getting a list of financial firms by specific characteristics• Information on specific firms• League tables and rankings information• Where to find investment research• Information on deals, deal managers, and underwriters• Job listings

So, that’s what we’ll cover today!


Career Information:

• Vault Guides http://www.library.hbs.edu/go/vault.html– 100+ page overviews of careers in Investment Banking,

Investment Management, Hedge Funds, etc.– Reports on Morgan Stanley, Goldman, Fidelity, etc., the

inside take on what’s it’s like to work at various major firms– Guidance on quantitative and financial interviews

• Wetfeet Guides [competitor to Vault] – available in Baker Library


S&P Industry Reports http://www.library.hbs.edu/go/s_and_p.html

• Detailed overviews of over 50 industries.• Includes:“Investment Services”, “Banking” and

“Financial Services: Diversified” • Reviews current industry issues, top players,

how to analyze an industry. • Updated every six months. • Once in the database, select industry choice

from the pull-down menu at the right of the screen.

• To get company lists and transaction information, click on “Analytics and Targeting” tab

• To get Firm Profiles and search for information on individuals, click on “Company Intelligence” tab

• Has global coverage

• Good place also to get background information on individuals.

To do this search:1. Go to "Analytics & Targeting" and pick "Transaction" Screening2. Click on "Add Companies" under the Coverage Management section of the dashboard. 3. Search for advisors by name, [in this case “Morgan Stanley”add them to Selected Items, then select "Advisor" from the "This criterion describes" field. Click Add Criteria button. 4. Then under “General Transaction Details” click on “Transaction Dates” and limit search to the “last 12 months”. Then click Add Criteria button.5. Click on the final number under “Matches” to view results.

To do this search:1. Go to "Analytics & Targeting" and pick “Company

Screening”2. Click on "Financial Statements" under Financial

Information to the left of the screen, and click on "Key Financials" and click on your mouse on "Total Enterprise Value" in the list. In the Value box below, put in Greater than: 100. Then click Add Criteria in the lower right.

3. Then in the upper left of the screen, click on "Industry Classifications", and search for "Beverages" and click on that selection with your mouse, and then click Add Criteria in the lower right.

4. From the final results listed, click on the final number under “Matches” to view results.

publications.

To do this search:

1. Once in Factiva, click on the “Search” Tab2. Select Source: Wall Street Journal3. In the "Free Text" search box, type Goldman Sachs. 4. From the "Date" pull-down menu select "In the last year", then

click on "Run Search" button4. Articles on Goldman Sachs in the Wall Street Journal will appear.

Sort by Relevancy to get articles that mention Goldman the most.

5. To download selected articles to Microsoft Word, click “RTF”.
