Board MeetingsThe public is welcome to attend Board of Trustees’ meetings. The open portion of the regular meetings begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Vonita White Administration Building, 200 S. Denton Tap Road. Persons interested in speaking at the meetings should contact the superintendent’s office at 214.496.8002. An open forum item is placed on each regular meeting’s agenda so that community members may address trustees at that time; however, the Open Meetings Act prohibits board action on such items at that night’s meeting.

A Note from the Board President

As we embark upon a new school year, I want to reflect on 2014-15 in CISD. It began with the confirmation of a new superintendent, Dr. Mike Waldrip. He hit the ground running and has exceeded all of our expectations. As we had hoped, Dr. Waldrip stepped in and took the time to listen to all of our stakeholders including our administrators, staff, parents, and learners. The effectiveness of his leadership style, specifically the focus on

planning and processes, was immediately seen in the iPad rollout at the middle schools.

Richard J. Lee Elementary, a one-of-a-kind Net Zero Energy and recently awarded LEED® Gold certified campus, opened last fall and quickly gained the attention of educators from around the country. In addition, we were very excited to have Pinkerton Elementary open its doors for the first time as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme for students from across our district. We also saw three major construction projects begin at Coppell High School to help accommodate the continued growth in our student population.

As you may know, the state legislature was unable to resolve the shortfalls in state funding for public education during its most recent session. Therefore, we are continuing our fight before the Texas Supreme Court for long overdue changes in how public education is funded. In 2015, Coppell ISD was required to send over $20 million back to the state (commonly referred to as “Robin Hood”) out of the approximate $99 million in tax revenue generated from property taxes within this school district. Even though we are projecting growth in our tax revenue as a result of increased property values, the increase will nearly be offset by the funds we are required to send back to the state. Based on our best estimates, it appears that our funding per pupil will actually decrease going forward. CISD is taking a proactive approach by monitoring and planning for the continued student growth and budget constraints.

Coppell ISD is very attractive to families moving to this part of the Metroplex. With that growth comes new challenges including how best to utilize our existing facilities and personnel within the current and anticipated state funding constraints. This fall we will convene a Bond Committee to further evaluate the suggestions of the Facility Visioning group with an eye toward a possible May 2016 bond election. This will allow for necessary facility improvements and construction occurring over the next three years.

Your Coppell ISD school board, as your dedicated educational partner, remains committed to providing outstanding opportunities for all children served by this district. With your support, CISD will continue to be a learning leader for public school systems across Texas. Let’s make it a great year!

David Apple, President of Coppell ISD Board of Trustees

Superintendent Speaks

Wow … what a tremendously productive first year it has been in Coppell ISD! I have quickly come to learn what a dynamic student population exists here: students who excel in traditional academics, as well as advanced academics and extracurricular programs. I have witnessed the dedication of our teachers and campus leadership doing their part to ensure the growth and success of every learner. To see a comprehensive list of CISD

accomplishments, visit “Rave Reviews” on the website. I hope you will join me in celebrating all of these triumphs. During 2014-15, the Pinnacle 2020 five-year strategic plan (including amendments approved by the Board of Trustees in February) continued to take shape. We have successfully completed several of the steps identified by the Action Teams and will continue working on our goals in the coming year. You will see an emphasis in the areas of facilities, communication, diversity, and technology. I hope you will review the plan (posted on CISD’s new responsive website) to follow the progress. I can’t say “Thank You!” enough to the team of parents, business representatives, and CISD staff for their commitment and thoughtful vision for the future of the students in Coppell schools.

This past spring, the district convened a 44 member Facility Visioning Committee to conduct research and compile a list of various solutions for five key areas of the district: Elementary, Middle School, High School, Technology, and Administration. Templeton Demographics, the district’s demographers, is projecting student enrollment increases at the rate of approximately 250 new students per year. They have also determined the area of greatest immediate need to be at the secondary level - particularly high school where Templeton predicts capacity at Coppell High School will be reached within three years. Staff presented the ideas of each team to the Board of Trustees during their Regular Meeting in June (see website) and will share them with a future Bond Committee to be convened in September. I hope if you are called to serve, you will give the opportunity thoughtful consideration.

Finally, if you have lived in Coppell for any length of time, we hope you have and will continue to experience educational success firsthand and through your children. If you are new to the Coppell ISD, welcome to one of the most outstanding public school districts in the state and please let us know how we can best serve you. My door is always open, and I look forward to seeing you on the campuses, attending student activities, and around town as we strive to make you proud to be a part of the educational legacy that you are helping to create for Coppell ISD!

Dr. Mike Waldrip, Superintendent of Coppell Schools

Texas’ First LEED® Gold Certified Elementary

Richard J. Lee is now LEED® Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED®, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy pre-requisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. Certified buildings save money and resources and have a positive impact on the health of occupants, while promoting renewable, clean energy. Lee was designed by Stantec, in partnership with the Coppell ISD, and was built to be high-performing and energy efficient. The building’s design features recycled materials, solar panels, a wind turbine, geothermal HVAC system, rain water collection, LED lights and more - which all equates to lower energy, water and material usage. In addition, the sustainable features are used as educational tools for learners across Coppell ISD, making the building itself a resource for learning.

Flexible Furniture Matches Flexible Learning

Where do kids like to do homework ... kitchen table, couch, floor, desk, outside? It probably depends on individual preference and the type of homework being done. Flexibility and comfort in one’s environment are very important component to maximize learning. Through funds provided by the 2013 bond campaign, all Coppell ISD campuses (except the brand new Lee Elementary) are being outfitted with updated furniture this summer. Campus administrators, teachers and learners spent last year evaluating their building spaces (classrooms, hallways, etc.) and researching furniture options. Each campus selected furniture that will provide flexibility to help meet the specific needs of learners and their educational activities.

This August, learners will come back to a modernized environment that includes items such as tables that adjust in height to be used while sitting and standing, comfy chairs and bean bags, chairs that rock and move, tables that configure in many ways, stools and mobile desktops. The new furniture allows for multiple arrangements that support group and individual work, maximize learning spaces and meet the needs of different learning styles.

Additional Summer Bond Projects

• Coppell High School has several major construction projects that are nearing completion. The multi-purpose field house, new kitchen and serving lines, and turf and track replacement at Buddy Echols Field will be completed by the start of school. The arena should open later in the fall semester.

• Coppell Middle School North’s stadium restrooms and concession stand will be completed for the start of the school year.

Outstanding Achievements

The Coppell Cowgirls won the UIL 6-A State Champion Soccer title this past spring! (see cover) For more highlights about the amazing student and staff success from all levels in Coppell ISD, view the latest edition of “Rave Reviews” on the district website.

Jodie Dienhammer, science teacher (left) and Mary Kemper, Director of Mathematics (right), were selected to join the Apple Distinguished Educators Class of 2015. Apple Distinguished Educators are part of a global community of education leaders recognized for doing amazing things with technology in and out of the classroom.

Jessica Caviness, math teacher at Coppell High School and featured on the cover, is a recipient of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Mrs. Caviness received her award in Washington, DC this past July.

Coppell Independent School District created the program “W.O.R.L.D. - Learning Locally, Growing Globally” – to assist in the cultural assimilation of families new to the U.S. Some of the beginning informational resources available for parents (through federal funding) include a brochure, handbook, fully translatable webpage, and video. These tools/resources will likely evolve with the changing needs of the patrons who use them as our efforts to strengthen understanding, communication, and engagement with the district’s diverse and growing family continue. If you are interested in these resources, please contact your child’s campus.

Digital Literacy

Over the last year, Coppell ISD has bolstered its learning opportunities for digital literacy. At the start of the school year, all learners will engage in a learning experience that will help emphasize digital literacy qualities including accessing and analyzing information, as well as collaborating and communicating with others-all while remaining safe online and being a responsible digital and global citizen.

Parents will also have access to the information literacy portion of digital literacy in iTunes U or a pdf version located on the Instructional Technology web page in the Parents section.

Partners in Excellence

2014-2015 marked the first year of the CISD Partners in Excellence Program, where business partners engage learners in real-world experiences. The student success stories were numerous this year as CISD learners interacted with local businesses to better understand specific content areas of their course work or to explore potential career paths. Coppell ISD is grateful for its new partners, and are always looking for more. To learn more about the program or to sign your company up as a partner, visit

Clarity Provides Analysis on Technology in the Classroom

Following recommendations made during last spring’s technology audit, CISD began utilizing BrightByte’s Clarity for Schools. This product measures the impact of technology use on student achievement. With over 10,000 devices in the district and a 1:1 device to student ratio from 4th -12th grade, Coppell ISD is committed to measuring the impact of technology.

Clarity provides a means to capture meaningful data, analyze it and then provide reports that are easy to understand so administrators know where to stay the course and where to make adjustments. The proprietary CASE (Classroom-Access-Skills-Environment) framework looks at technology access at home and at school, teacher and student skills, environmental factors such as policies, training and support, and the specific use of technologies for various types of learning.

“Strong analytics gives us the ability to make timely and effective decisions that will help our learners and educators be more successful. For example, data collected this past spring through Clarity is being used to adjust our professional learning plan to better meet the needs of our educators,” said Nancy Garvey, Director of Instructional Technology.

First Annual Red & BlackInteractive Institute

One hundred Coppell ISD students fought summer boredom by attending the Coppell Education Foundation’s first STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineer-ing, Arts and Math) camp. These 7th and 8th grade students were exposed to a variety of STEAM fields through exciting real-world applications hosted by some great local corporate partners.

Throughout the week, students participated in fun activities such as food styling, planning flight paths, building truss systems, diag-nosing diseases, creating firewalls, and developing marshmallow

launchers. The Red & Black Interactive Institute is a fundraiser for the Foun-dation, which financially supports students in several ways including providing innovative teaching grants.

Balfour Beatty and Stantec, CISD Partners, test the weight of student-made truss structures made

during the Education Foundation’s STEAM camp.

Schoology Empowers Engaging Instruction

Secondary learners will be utilizing a new learning management system, Schoology, this year. The previous learning management system, Blackboard, did not function at the level needed to support CISD learners and teachers. This decision to change systems was made after an exhausted evaluation process including problem-solving, focus groups, a survey and extensive product research.

Schoology offers a platform for collaboration, communication, organization, discussion boards and a place to submit assignments. Teachers can review student work and provide feedback through the system. Schoology has a simplified navigation and a similar layout to Facebook. It is also iPad compatible and fully integrates with Google Apps for Education. Parents will be excited to have their own user accounts to view all their children’s work in one login. Parents should expect to receive further information about Schoology at the start of the school year.

AttendanceParents, please remember that it is vital for students to be on time and in attendance each and every day. Not only do students miss valuable instruction time and assignments when they are absent or late, but the rest of the class’ learning environment can be affected.

The Texas Education Agency code requires students to attend school at least 90 percent of the school days class is offered. This means there is no differentiation between excused and unexcused absences in order to receive credit or for grade promotion. Please refer to the Student Handbook for the specific attendance policy.

Coppell ISD is committed to encouraging good attendance and communicating attendance information to parents. Through an automated message, parents will receive an evening attendance call and email for any unexcused absence.

Attendance records can be viewed through the CISD App

Policy UpdateRoutine updates have been made to the following policies: Student Handbook and Student Code of Conduct. Please visit your campus website under About Us/Policies to review these new policies.

Immunization RequirementsImmunizations are an important part of protecting your child’s, your family’s, and your community’s health; and state law requires students in Texas schools to be immunized against certain vaccine-preventable diseases. We would like to stress the importance of getting these required vaccines at the earliest possible time to avoid the back-to-school immunization rush. For immunization information, visit www.coppellisd.com/immunization.

Don’t Miss Any Electronic FlyersCoppell ISD cooperates with community groups and organizations that sponsor activities of an educational/enrichment nature for students by distributing flyers electronically via Peachjar. All flyers are approved by the district. All parents with email addresses on file will be automatically enrolled to receive electronic flyers. Additionally, all e-flyers can be viewed by clicking the Peachjar icon on each school’s website and also viewed in the Coppell ISD mobile app. Peachjar saves trees and time for CISD- 810,148 pieces of paper and 97.4 trees in 2014-15.

Interested in Subbing?Coppell ISD strives to employee the most qualified applicants; therefore certified applicants and registered nurses will be considered first for an invitation to any upcoming orientations. Coppell ISD monitors staffing needs throughout the year and hires substitutes as needed. Visit www.coppellisd.com/substitutes for further information on requirements and submitting an application.6

Online Enrollment SystemNow Powered by Infosnap

Coppell ISD is excited to announce a new online enrollment system, powered by “Infosnap,” for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year! This process replaces “the portal,” which was used previously, to enroll students each year and update contact information. The district’s portal registration module was a limited and antiquated system. Infosnap allows more flexibility with better integration with the district’s current student data management system.

New FamiliesFamilies new to Coppell ISD should contact their campus to make an enrollment appointment. The campus will provide instructions on enrolling through Infosnap.

Current CISD FamiliesAll parents/guardians should have received an email from [email protected] during the week of July 13th with instructions, a link and a secure “snapcode” that links directly to their student’s information. Parents with multiple children will receive a separate email with a different “snapcode” for each child.

Families need to take action and complete this online process as soon as possible. The enrollment process should only take 20 minutes as many of the forms will be pre-populated from the previous year. Student’s enrollment for the 2015-16 school year will not be complete until the online enrollment process has been submitted. For Frequently Asked Questions and Helpful Tips visit www.coppellisd.com/infosnapenrollment.

If a parent/guardian did not receive the email or can not locate the snapcode, visit www.coppellisd.com/infosnapenrollment for instructions on getting a new snapcode.

Enrollment RequirementsYou must be a legitimate resident within the Coppell ISD boundaries to enroll a student in any CISD school. All students must complete the online enrollment forms and provide the required documentation in order to view his/her teacher assignment and/or class schedule. For a list of required documents and enrollment procedures, visit www.coppellisd.com/enrollment.
