Welcome to Cowboy basketball and thanks for your attendance and support! We have a great group of young (only one returning senior) but gritty varsity athletes who are working hard to earn respect from their coaches and teammates. They were battle-tested throughout a tough non-district schedule and have grown and improved over time.

As a former player, parent, and coach of this sport, I can attest firsthand to the tremendous amount of time and preparation required for each game. Coach Pehl and his staff are doing a great job of preparing the team for the challenges and opportunities of the regular season, and I am looking forward to seeing

the leaders (on and off the court) emerge as district play continues.

Your endorsement, along with the enthusiasm of our cheerleaders, Cowboy Carl, the Lariettes, and our high-spirited student section, will help make this season fun to watch. I look forward to seeing you courtside as we cheer the Cowboys on to victory.

We are extremely excited about the 2014-2015 Cowboy Basketball season. As always, expectations are high as we look forward to watching the amazing things our Cowboys will do on the court. Head Coach Kit Pehl enters his 3rd year at the helm of the Coppell Basketball program. He welcomes new assistant coaches Jarell English and Sean Smith to join Clint Schnell and Daniel Foster to make up an outstanding staff. All of these coaches have spent countless hours in preparation to lead our athletes in the most effective way. They are truly an asset to our school and community. I have watched with admiration as each of the players have trained tirelessly to reach the ultimate levels of performance. The hard work and sacrifice that each athlete continues to

make will undoubtedly lead to the fulfillment of our goals on the court. I want to say “Thank You” to all our parents and fans for the tremendous support you show the program. Coach Pehl is entering his third season as head basketball coach at Coppell High School. Advancing to the Area Round of the play-offs for the second consecutive season, the tradition rich Cowboy Basketball program extended post season appearances to 17 of the last 18 years. The 2014-2015 Cowboys return no starters and 3 letterman from a year ago, yet Coach Pehl is excited about the potential and growth of this year’s squad.

With 15 years of coaching experience, Pehl spent his first 2 years of coaching in Coppell. His first year as an educator including coaching football, basketball, and track at Coppell Middle School West and moved to CHS the following year coaching basketball and football. He then spent 2 years at Keller High School as a 1st assistant before opening Keller Central in 2003-2004. Pehl was the head coach at Keller Central for 9 years from 2003-2012. Pehl has now made playoff appearances in 5 of the last 7 years including a district championship in 2011-2012.

Coach Pehl was born and raised in San Antonio, TX and is a 1993 graduate of James Madison High School. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA and then returned to Texas graduating from Baylor in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education majoring in history and minoring in physical education.

Coach Pehl is married to Lisa who he met while teaching at Coppell Middle School West and she currently teaches at Coppell Middle School North. Married 12 years, Kit and Lisa have 2 children. Emma (6) is a 1st grader and Gabe (9) is a 3rd grader, both attending Cottonwood Creek Elementary.

DISTRICT OPPONENT PROFILES L.D. Bell – While losing most of its top scorers from a year ago after just missing the playoffs, the Blue Raiders enter the first year of realigned 7-6A with enough athleticism looking to compete with anyone this season. With a blend of balanced scoring and zone defense, Coach Willie Henderson’s team will face the Cowboys out of the gate first in district play!

Colleyville Heritage – After a tough 2013-14 campaign missing the playoffs for the first time in recent memory, Coach Stephen Hamrick has his Panthers rebounding nicely this season already and looking to be in thick of the playoff race. Heritage has a tough, hard-nosed zone that slows the game down and makes every possession important. Figures to be a physical and emotional battle when Heritage meets the Cowboys this season!

Euless Trinity – Coming off a top 10 state-ranked season this past year and play-off loss to the Cowboys in bi-district, the Trojans must replace a talented roster including All-American Miles Turner now at Texas. Coach Mark Villines does have one starter back in sophomore point guard Jhivvan Jackson who has proven will take bulk of the shots for Trinity this season and is one of the more talented players in the district.

Haltom – The Buffalos return their entire starting line-up and even more depth off the bench to certainly make Coach Todd Shelton the most experienced team in the district. With almost entirely senior laden roster, 6-7 post Andrew Stafford leads Haltom into district play with a very successful pre-district campaign so far and looking to make the play-offs for the first time for Shelton since arriving at Haltom.

Richland – With overall speed and athleticism, the Rebels are considered the district favorite in 7-5A this season. With a roster with as many as 5 players capable of leading the team in scoring on any night, Richland will shoot the 3 point shot in bunches combined with a pressure defense of interchangeable parts that Coach Richard Bacon hopes will wreak havoc in district play this season.

Southlake Carroll – Looking to bounce back from a tough 2013-2014 campaign and missing the playoffs, Coach Eric McDade has the Dragons off to a nice start this season. With a full court defense that attempts to speed up the game’s pace to Carroll’s liking, guards Kirk Mason and Cooper Osburn are thriving. Add the addition of forward Lil’Jordan Humphrey after football season, and Carroll certainly figures to be among the top teams in the district race this season.

Tommy Gantt, a sixteen year old junior at Coppell High, is fighting stage IV nasopharyngeal cancer. Tommy loves basketball and was a member of the Coppell High School Basketball team until he got too sick to participate. Tommy was diagnosed in June 2013 and is being treated at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. Tommy endured radiation and chemotherapy for most of 2013 & 2014. His family is feeling the financial effects of this medical treatment, and travel to Houston. Recently Tommy did not get the news the family and friends were hoping for. The results of the latest scans with the trial T-cell treatments has shown tumors are still growing and more were found. Right now, he is in the hospital to manage the incredible pain the tumors are causing.
