Why Cooperative Learning?

Find Your Partners...➔ Class partners are a great

way to “mix” your students.

➔ Find a partner for each of the sports teams and write their name in the corresponding box.

Notetaking➔ Fill in your notes as the night goes along.

PIES Information - Jigsaw➔ Each person at the table (A,B,C,D) will be given a section of an

article to read.

➔ They should become the “expert” on their part of the reading.

➔ When everyone has finished, share what you learned from your

section in ABCD order.

➔ Take notes and ask questions of the speaker so that all team

members have a clear understanding of the entire article.

the strategy of Jigsaw in your classroom or content area?

New Structure: Simultaneous Roundtable

➔ Each student begins with a single paper in front of them.

➔ For a given amount of time (1.5 min) students write about what is at the top of their paper.

➔ After the time is called, papers are passed clockwise and students respond on their new paper.

➔ This continues until everyone has responded on all four papers (different colored markers may be used).

➔ As a group, share out what is on each paper.

ManagementTime to Teach:

➔ Take turns sharing one thing that “speaks” to you from your paper.

➔ Go in DCBA order this time.

ManagementTips and Tricks:

➔ Have a quiet signal

➔ Number the seats and not the students

➔ Organize all materials

➔ Use music

➔ Mixed ability levels for home table

➔ Always have sponge activities available (less than 15 minutes for when work is complete)

➔ Always model first

➔ Walk the room

Discuss, Share➔ What is one social skill

your students need help developing?

Social Skills

➔ Fostering the development of social skills should include:

➔ Development of social skills is a defining characteristic of cooperative learning.

2. modeling and reinforcement3. reflection and planning

1. structures

Missing Social Skill...

Step #1 : Identify Skill

Step 2: StructureParaphrase Passport

The rule is simple: You must accurately paraphrase the person who spoke

immediately before you, before you can express your own ideas.

❏ The speaker must feel accurately paraphrased before he/she gives the

other person the passport to speak.

❏ If not, the speaker says, "I don't seem to have made myself clear. Let me try

again."

Step 3: Reflection

New Structure: Find the Fiction➔ We will use Fan-N-Pick combined with Find the Fiction for this activity.

➔ Person A will start and pick up and fan the set of cards on your table. Person B chooses and reads aloud the three statements on the card. Person C decides which statement is the Fib. Person D praises if correct or gives a different answer.

➔ On the card will be three statements. The answer will be highlighted with corrections in bold and parentheses.◆ DO NOT READ THE ANSWER WHEN RECITING THE STATEMENTS
