New Structure: Paraphrase Passport1. Teacher selects a piece of text and divides the text into “manageable” sections or paragraphs.

2. Students are placed into partnerships (A & B and C & D).

3. Teacher distributes a copy of the text to each student.

4. Both partners read the first paragraph silently.

5. Partner A summarizes what they read. Partner B then paraphrases what partner A said. 6. Partners exchange roles. Both partners read the paragraph silently.

7. Partner B summarizes what they read. Partner A paraphrases what partner B said.

8. The process continues until the entire piece has been read.

Brain Break---Hagoo (come Here)1. Two teams of about a dozen members stand facing each other a very giant

step apart.

2. A member from one team steps to one end of the gauntlet, and a member

of the other team steps to the other end.

3. They stare at each other until one issues the challenge, “Hagoo.” They are

both to walk the entire gauntlet with a very stern frown.

4. If they smile, they are won over by the other team.

5. The object of the game is to win over all the other teammembers.

6. Players cannot touch each other, but they can make faces and say goofy

comments that might get the frowning person to crack a smile.

New Structure: Placemat Consensus➔ Divide students into groups of four.➔ Each student writes their name on one section of the placemat.➔ Provide a text for students to read individually.➔ Give students a set amount of time to write down what they believe is most

important about the text on their side of the placemat. This should be done in silence.

➔ When everyone is finished writing, each person takes a turn to share their ideas with the other members of the group.

➔ The group discusses and “comes to consensus” on the ideas that are similar.➔ These ideas are written in the center circle.➔ As a class, discuss ideas that made it into the center circle.

Teambuilder - I’m no Dum-Dum...➔ Pass out Dum-Dum lollipops to the group.➔ For every letter that appears in the flavor, the

student has to share something about themselves with the group.◆ Note: You could use this as a review for content.

For every letter that appears, the student has to give facts about material they have learned.

➔ Complete this activity in Round Robin format.

Classbuilder - All About Me➔ Use Quiz Quiz Trade, and All About Me Cards, as a classbuilder.➔ Directions for Quiz Quiz Trade:

◆ Give each student a card. ● Tip: Cards with multiple choice or short answers work best.

◆ Have students pair up ● Tip: Walk around until music stops OR use Hand-Up Stand-Up Pair-Up

◆ Partner 1 asks Partner 2 the question on his or her card. Partner 2 answers. Partner 1 acknowledges a correct answer or coaches as needed.

◆ The process reverses with Partner 2 asking the questions.◆ After both questions have been asked, the partners switch cards, find new

partners, and the process begins again.

Brain Break---Speed Dating➔ Provide students with “100 Getting to Know You Questions.”

◆ Note: Prep the handout by highlighting questions that each person will ask. This will ensure variety during the “dating” process.

➔ Before you begin Speed Dating, explain how you want students to move. If your desks are set up in pairs, one student in each pair can stay seated and one person can move clockwise around the room. This will allow for random pairing.◆ Note: For tonight’s purpose, B’s and C’s will stay seated and A’s and D’s will

move.➔ As students move around the room, they will use the provided handout to record

what they learn about their “dates.”➔ At the end of the process, students have had the opportunity to move, meet new

classmates, learn about their interests, and summarize what they have learned.

New Structure: Numbered Heads 1. Create a set of review questions on a PowerPoint. One question per slide. 2. Students should be in groups of four.3. Have the students number off 1-4.4. Each student should have a individual response board (white boards work best, but paper/pen works

too).5. Beam a question to your students. Each student writes their answer privately, no talking.6. Ask students to “Put their heads together.” This means students should share their responses and

agree upon one answer. It is very important that everyone on the team knows the correct response.7. Choose a number, 1-4, all selected students stand, ready to answer independently. They may no longer

consult with their teammates.8. The teacher decides how to have students answer the question. Here are some options:

a. Standing students show their response boards.b. Teacher calls on one standing student to share answer aloud.c. Teacher uses a team selector to pick a student on a team to share.d. Teacher calls on multiple standing students to share.e. Students use response cards for multiple choice questions.
