Lock windows – particularly upper- storey windows – or shield them with firmly attached window guards so your child can’t fall out. Move any furniture, beds, household objects such as chairs and pot plants away from them. This will help prevent children from climbing up to windows. Lock away hand tools such as saws and drills, and keep lawnmowers, chainsaws and other sharp tools out of reach. When using tools, make sure your child is out of the way. Unplug tools whenever you take a break. Pin up emergency numbers and other useful safety contacts near the phone (see our suggested list below). Keep a basic first aid kit in the home and car for any injuries that do occur. Window safety Children can fall out of windows even if the windows have screens on them. To prevent children falling out of windows: When opening windows for ventilation, only open ones that children cannot access. Where possible, open windows from the top. If there are children around, make sure you keep all reachable windows closed and locked. continued on page 2 extra protection, it is advisable that smoke alarms should also be installed in bedrooms where people sleep with their door closed. You can read more about preventing fires. Have the hot water delivered to the bathroom at the maximum 50 o c to prevent serious scalds. Ask an electrician to install safety switches. Keep electrical appliances in good order. Have repairs done by a registered electrician. Replace electrical appliances and cords if they’re worn. Look for appliances with short cords so your baby or toddler is less likely to swing them, or pull and trip on them. If blinds have cords, wrap cord in a cleat attached to the wall at least 1600mm above floor level. Cover chains and springs with a sheath to protect small fingers. Chains should be shorter than 5 cm – that is, not long enough to wrap around your baby’s neck. You can read more about preventing strangling and suffocation. Use low-power night-lights and an efficient torch to make looking after your baby at night safer. Leaving a hall light on at night makes it easier for older children to get to the toilet without tripping. Use heaters and fires that are fixed to the wall because these are safer. Have fireguard screens attached to the wall. If you have a pool, install a fence and self-locking gate that meet the requirements of Standards Australia for swimming pools and outdoor spas. You can read more about swimming pool safety. Install safety guards across entries to balconies, and always supervise your child on balconies even if you have guards. Look for balcony guardrails without horizontal bars or footholds Keeping your child safe at home can be easy. There are lots of ways to make sure your home is fun, stimulating and safe as your child grows and develops. General house tips Your adult-friendly home has lots of potential hazards for a child. But you can keep your child safe by finding out what the risks are so that you can prevent or remove them. Baby proofing and childproofing might make you think of a place where babies and children can never get hurt. The reality is that children can still have tumbles and falls. The key is supervision as well as a safe environment. Your child will be safest if you accept that childproofing is always a work in progress. As your child grows and learns to climb and open things, you need to be alert for new hazards. If you need to, change the environment to make sure your home is still a safe and creative place to play and explore. Also think about the environment when you’re out and about in the car, walking around, or with a pram or stroller. If kids have a creative place to play and explore, with lots of interesting things to do and look at, they’ll be less likely to seek their own stimulation by exploring areas you might not want them to get into. Along with these practical tips for providing a safe environment for babies and children, you can also teach your child about what’s safe and what’s not. By law every home must have at least one working smoke alarm installed on each level. For overall fire house safety, a smoke alarm should be installed outside the sleeping areas of your home, with batteries checked regularly and replaced annually. For

EARLY LEARNERS - Dear Early Learners Families, Firstly, I would like to welcome the new families to

our Early Learners classroom, it has been lovely to get to know each individual child. Thank you to all

for the Facebook likes and support throughout the last few months. Secondly, the children have been

showing a lot of interest in group time activities. We have been focusing on finger puppets and singing

songs. The children have displayed music and movement skills by either dancing, moving or clapping

hands. If you would like to know any of the songs we sing throughout the days please let me know, I

will be more than happy to write it down for you so you can sing at home as well. Every day we focus

on colours, animals, numbers and names. The children are slowly starting to say a few words. Thirdly,

every morning your child will be allocated a cot with their names on it. You are more than welcome to

leave your child's blankets and sheets here throughout the week. If you want to take them home on the

last day they attend, to wash them, that would be great. I have also labelled all the baskets in the

kitchen and in the nappy change room. We were writing the names on each individual nappies but we

have allocated boxes for each now so we will not be writing the names on the nappies. We have so

much fun during the day here in Early Learners, it has been absolutely amazing to get to know your

child individually. I really adore each and everyone one of them and thank you for choosing me to be

their teacher. Thank you, Miss Sarah and Miss Natalie.

JUNIOR EARLY YEARS - Dear Families of Junior Early Years and Early Years. What a wonderfully

busy month we have had in the Junior Early Years classroom. We have been settling well into our new

classroom, and there is lots of space for more exciting learning activities and experiences happening.

We've enabled a solid routine happening in the classroom and Miss Sallie and I are very proud to see

the children develop into their skills as the weeks go by. We've been enjoying playing with the new

areas and resources in our class and can’t wait to expand on our creativity and make our room even

more fun and interactive. Yoga with Miss Goldie has been a big hit in the Junior Early Years classroom,

we have been loving the visits, the dancing , the singing and the stretching! A big thank you to our

amazing families for donating their toys and recycled goods, we appreciate it very much. These will go

to great use to embedding sustainable practices with the children. Thank you, Miss Stephanette and

Miss Sallieann.

EARLY YEARS/PRE-PREP - Dear Early Years/Pre-Prep Families, Welcome to the Pre-Prep

classroom. We have been very busy over the past few weeks settling into new routines and transitions.

We have been working hard on building a positive environment and the children are being supported to

make positive choices. We have also been developing pre-literacy skills, such as building knowledge

of letter recognition and sounds. As part of this we have a focus letter each week where children are

engaging in a variety of experiences and activities, which are supporting their learning. We had a great

excursion to Bunnings last week where children picked some vegetable and flower plants. We have

been busy getting our garden ready and have now planted these. We can't wait to watch our plants

grow so we can harvest them. Children are learning about caring for and respecting the environment

and in the coming weeks we will be looking at sustainability and what this means. Your input is valued,

therefore if you have any goals you wish for me to incorporate into the program, please do not hesitate

to see me. Thankyou, Miss Lynne.

SCHOOL CARE - Dear Families of School Care. What a fun and exciting month it has been. This

month in the schoolies room we have been busy arranging and decorating the classroom. We are

working on encouraging children to express their ideas and follow on with their interests, this helps

build confidence, expressing ownership and pride of their art work and ideas are being included into the

program, making it an interesting, happy and inviting place to be. At the moment the children are

showing great interest in physical play including soccer, football and ball games which allows the

children to develop fine and gross motor skills, agility, balance and coordination, and working together

as a team to problem solve. It has been a pleasure to work alongside the children. It is not long until our

Easter Vacation Care and we can’t wait, as it is a fun filled program! This program was developed

through recapping on what our children enjoy the most and extending on it and making it challenging

and exciting. We love and encourage all members of our families to provide new and interesting ideas

to the room programming through photos, birthday and family celebrations, or exciting adventures from

the weekend. Thank you, Miss Bec.
