2018 - a significant year for Croquet in South Australia

The South Australian Croquet Association is celebrating 100 years of Croquet in South Australia this year. The Association was formally opened on May 1st 1918 by the Adelaide Lord Mayor C R J Glover at the then clubhouse in the South Park Lands. The Association now has its headquarters at the corner of Hutt and Glen Osborn Roads. It has around 1000 members and 35 clubs. Croquet is a sport which involves both skill and tactics and it can be played by all ages.

In addition to its centenary year, Croquet SA hosted the 69th Association Croquet Eire Cup National Championship carnival. This interstate carnival tool place in Adelaide between March 14th and March 25th and attracted top Croquet players from around Australia. The National Championship comprises of three events, the Eire Cup interstate teams event, the Men’s and Women’s singles championships and the Australian Gold Medal. Competition was spread across several metropolitan clubs.

Since its inception in 1948, South Australia has won the Interstate Cup 32 times but has not won it since 2003. The 12 strong SA team changed that. It won going through the competition undefeated

How does this affect our area? Robyn Short from Coobowie, plays Croquet for the Moonta Club and was a team member of the successful Eire Cup SA team. Not only that Robyn won the National Women’s Single Championship as well. She is now the reigning Australian Women’s Champion.

Congratulations Robyn! Well done on both counts. All those hours of practice certainly paid off!

“AWESOME FUN WITH FISHING”

Down by the little jetty, or the bird hide in Coobowie, along the beaches at Sultana Point and cliff faces by the cemetery in Edithburgh, the waters are boiling with Yellow Eye Mullet. My mum used to make mullet patties (gorgeous by the way), Betty Boo's husband used to smoke them (bloody beautiful with a cold one), and Boo used to batter up the fillets and cook them, which ever way you eat them, they are vastly underrated, which is such a shame, coz the meat is sweet, a little darker than Tommies, but just as tasty in my books. And very easy to catch, so here's how!

Grab your self some mullet mix from your local tackle shop (Jaye will show you which one), a small berley sinker, some line, and a rod that is not to flimsy but is strong enough to pull 1/2kg of fish in, and 2, size 8 long shank hooks, and a small swivel.

Your Berley, must be almost good enough to eat yourself. So cut up bread, and add to mullet mix, with some tuna oil, 2 tbspns of curry mix. Add 1 cup of water and mix well, add 1/2 cup of plain flour and really mix it together well. Should be a really nice sticky dough. Grab some kangaroo meat, you only need a little piece on each hook.

Fishing for mullet, is best done on the turn of the incoming tide, I've caught these little beauties in virtually less than 8" water. Watch for silver flashes and swirls of water, especially at the little jetty. We normally set up well before the tide along the walkway, coz once they jump on your line, the fun begins. There is a size limit of 24cm, so please put undersized fish back, with a limit of 40 per day per person. We normally take about a dozen, that way I get to fish the next day. Hopefully catch you all on the jetty soon, tight lines and safe fishing.

50 YEAR REUNION

BEING PLANNED

Early stage of organizing a 50year reunion of the ‘5 in a row’ premierships that was won by the Edithburgh Football Club between 1968 - 1972.

We need those players that are still with us to save the date for the last home game at Edithburgh on August 11th and Sunday 12th.

9 players out of 14 who played in all of the 5 premierships are still around.

SPICY GRILLED CHICKEN

INGREDIENTS:-

4 chicken breast fillets, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/4 cup white wine, ( oh! go on then, have a slurp yourself), 1 tbsp honey, 2 tbsp freshly chopped coriander leaves, 1 tbsp grated ginger, 2 small fresh red chillies, chopped. 2 cloves crushed garlic, 2 tsp ground turmeric, 2 tsp cumin seeds, 1/2 tps ground cinnamon, 2 strips lemon rind, and cooking oil spray.

METHOD:-

First of all, have another glass of wine, cooking should be fun and relaxing. Then grab a sharp knife, and cut 3 slashes in each chicken fillet, blend or process the wine, honey, juice, coriander, cumin, garlic, gin-ger, chillies, turmeric and cinnamon till smooth, finely cut lemon rind into very fine strips and add this to the marinade. Pour this over the chicken fillets, and refrigerate at least 3 hrs or overnight.

Drain chicken, and reserve marinade, coat chicken with cooking spray, and bung on the BBQ, cook until golden brown both sides and cooked right through, brushing with marinade on every turn.

This is truly fantastic with a light green salad, corn on the cob, and an esky full of cold drinks on ice. Fantastic for an autumnal picnic by the sea or in a park.

HAPPY NOSHING FOLKS

Global warming confirmed by Dolphin Fish being caught in Coobowie Bay!

Locals shocked to the core.

OFF COURSE FISH!!

This 1.15 metre visitor from more tropical climes was caught chasing mullet in shallow water at Coobowie recently. It became stranded. Maybe the cooler temperatures led to it losing its map and direction!

The dolphinfish (also known as the Mahi-mahi) is a large fish that can be found in warm tropical climates.

Despite the name “dolphinfish” this fish is not related to the dolphin family at all and are not marine mammals, they are fish and like most fish they are cold-blooded, produce eggs and breathe using gills.

Dolphinfish are known to eat a variety of prey such as crabs, crustaceans, small fish, squid and sargassum weed among other sea dwelling creatures and plant life.

The dolphinfish can be found living near the coastline or in offshore warm tropical – sub tropical waters above 32 °C both in and around the equator throughout the world.

These surface dwelling fish can be found primarily in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans.

Some of the most popular areas known for hunting these fish include Costa Rica, the Gulf of Mexico, Florida & Hawaii among other ocean rich locations.

Some facts about Dolphinfish for those readers puzzled and with a need to know more.

Birds of the Heel

Jeffrey Robinson

Sulphur-crested Cockatoo

It seems surprising that it took many years before photographs of the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo were obtained on the Heel. Actually, I was advised to go to the road from Wool Bay to Kleins to look for a large grey bird of prey on the third power pole. No bird of prey was found on more than one trip. However on one occasion, three Sulphur-crested Cockatoos were on the power pole! I do not consider that my friend had mistaken one of these for a bird of prey. Nor did I accept the comment “Should have gone to SpecSavers”.

Although not as numerous as the Little Corella, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is common and familiar to everyone in the city. Its loud raucous call often signals its arrival. Hard luck if you have a tree that it likes to demolish, or when we first arrived in Australia and lived in Newcastle NSW, the Sulphur-crested Cockatoos demolished our television aerial and its cable.

Sulphur-crested Cockatoos nest in large hollows in trees. In the absence of trees they may nest in a cliff. Size 45cm
