Dear Friends,

I am delighted to be part of the 60th Annual Convocation of XLRI. As Chairman of the XLRI Board of Governors, it is an honour to be amidst future leaders of the world of business on this significant occasion.

XLRI, as all of you are aware, has grown significantly in the last six decades and has established its place as a well-respected, reputed Business School. Jamshedpur- India’s first planned industrial township - is truly fortunate to have such a reputed business school. XLRI not only lays emphasis on high-quality , management-centric education but also focuses on inculcating values and skill-sets required to become responsible corporate citizens. It is this emphasis on becoming a well-rounded individual that sets XLRI apart from other business schools in the country.

On this landmark occasion, I want to acknowledge the role and contribution of the Director, faculty and staff of XLRI in helping create a suitably conducive environment for students to realise their potential and prepare themselves for an effective and productive work-life .

To the graduating students: In the two years that you have spent here, XLRI has helped mould and assist you to become thoughtful and fine human beings. I also encourage you to develop a habit of lifelong learning so that you continue to be an asset to your organisation and the society at large. Always remember to serve the society around you with compassion, honesty and integrity.

Dear Friends,

At the outset a hearty welcome to the 60th Annual Convocation of XLRI Jamshedpur.

I am delighted to present the convocation brochure for the year 2015-16. This academic year has once again brought laurels to XLRI in different spheres, which have done us proud.

XLRI has added yet another feather to its cap by receiving the coveted international accreditation by Association of MBAs(AMBA),UK.AMBA accreditationrepresentsthehigheststandard of achievement in postgraduate business education and is earned only by the best programmes globally. We have also received NBA accreditation (National Bureau of Accreditation) for our three flagship PGDM programmes.

In the last three years - 2013, 2014 and 2015, XLRI has consistently been ranked as the best private B-school in India. Moreover, XLRI has been ranked among the top three business schools in the country in all the nationally respected B – School rankings.

Today, our present campus boasts of state-of-the-art infrastructure which includes the new learning center comprising 26 classrooms with an overall capacity for 2,030 students. XLRI’s infrastructural facilities have been rated as No 1 in India by Outlook Business in 2015.

I would like to place on record the contribution of our faculty and staff in strengthening teaching, research and other related areas concerning our institute.

To the graduating batch of 2016:

Dr. Sunil Kant Munjal is the Jt Managing Director of Hero MotoCorp Ltd, the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturing company, and the Chairman of Hero Corporate Services Pvt. Ltd. He is responsible for developing growth strategies and implementation of new business plans for the Group.

Dr. Munjal is on the board of several companies including Hero Management Services Ltd, Hero InvestCorp Ltd, Coca Cola India Advisory Board, Bharti Foundation and UK India Advisory Board. A former president of CII, Dr. Munjal served as a member of the Narsimham Committee, which was set up in 1990’s to chart a course for banking and financial sector reforms in India.

A distinguished educationist – Dr. Munjal is the guiding force behind the BML Munjal University and is on the board of several educational institutions, to name a few: Indian School of Business at Hyderabad and Mohali, IIT Ropar, University of Tokyo and UK India Business Council.

A far-sighted venturer, Dr. Munjal has not only made noteworthy contributions to business and industry, but also he has been instrumental in making significant positive impact on various socio-economic reforms of India. He is currently a member of Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry. Dr. Munjal has also been involved in the preparation of several socio-economic reports in the fields of skill development, vocational training, CSR and tribal development.

Dr. Munjal has several accolades to his credit for his meritorious service. He was selected by India Today as one of the Faces of the Millennium for business. In 2012, he received the Globscot Award from the Scottish Government. In 2013, he was honoured by The Royal Society of Medicine for his contribution to affordable healthcare.

XLRI organised the 24th Annual JRD Tata Oration on Business Ethics. Eminent journalist, Shekhar Gupta, Chairman and Founding Editor of Mediascape Group, delivered the oration on Changing Role of Media in Today’s India at XLRI Campus on 24 November, 2015.

40-year-long career as a journalist and talked about the evolution of media and its role through the years. He observed, “Truth never hurts anybody, but where there is nobody to tell the truth, rumours become the truth.”

• Discussing about both the positive and negative sides of media and news reporting system in India today, he said that ‘a painful and noisy media is better than a bunch of lies’. He said that any normal citizen with a smart-phone can have access to media, thus becoming a part of the media.

• He also expressed concern over media houses being run by the richandaffluentfortheirvestedinterests.

the JrD tata foundation in Business ethicsXLRI in association with select Tata Group Companies established the JRD Tata Foundation in Business Ethics in 1991, to mark their long-standing commitment and contribution to business ethics in India. The Foundation seeks to address itself by publicly affirming the urgent need for ethics in business and the need to bring about a conducive culture in which it can thrive. An increasing number of organizations are realizing the importance of ethics in business in today’s world.

8tH NCse CoNfereNCe The eight edition of National Conference on Social Entrepreneurship was organised by XLRI from 29-31 January, 2015. The three-day conference witnessed around 150-170 social entrepreneurs, development sector professionals, academicians and students. The theme of this year’s conference was - Social Innovations: Changing Lives and Society. The conference was organised by Fr Arrupe Centre for Ecology and Sustainability (FACES) and SIGMA, XLRI’s students’ committee for social initiatives.

Highlights of the conference:The three-day conference was a platform for showcasing, knowledge sharing and building the social entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Explaining the theme, Prof Madhukar Shukla, Chairperson of XLRI’s Fr Arrupe Center for Ecology & Sustainability and the coordinator for the conference marked that,

• India, with its myriad problems of providing access to basic provisions (e.g., education, healthcare, energy, livelihoods, information, etc.) to its vast population, provides immense opportunities for such innovations.

• Many social entrepreneurs and ventures have designed and implemented solutions to social problems, which are unique and scalable/ replicable.

• The essence of social entrepreneurship is to identify gaps in the provision of social goods and services, and to design innovative and scalable/ replicable solutions to bridge those gaps. By addressing the issues which are relevant to the society, these social innovations make an impact on the lives of people.

XLRI organised the 2nd Dr Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration on Sustainable Development in memory of the founder of Amul Dr Verghese Kurien, also known as the Milkman of India.

The oration was delivered by Bunker Roy, Founder and Director, Barefoot College, on The 21st Century Gandhian Model to Sustainability.

The event began with the welcome address by Prof. Madhukar Shukla, Chairperson of XLRI’s Fr. Arrupe Center for Ecology & Sustainability and convener of the oration.“We decided to institute this oration to create a platform to listen to and learn from thought-leaders, social entrepreneurs, development sector professionals and policy makers who have made significant contribution to the idea of an empowered, prosperous and sustainable society. The oration is to commemorate the memory of Dr. VergheseKurien and needless to say there is no better model of sustainable development both in terms of his life and legacy than Dr. Kurien,”said Prof. Shukla.

Delivering the oration on the topic The 21st Century Gandhian Model to Sustainability, Roy shared his

inspiration and experiences with the students. His life in Tilonia village, where Barefoot College is located, exposed him to the immense knowledge that the poor villagers hold. The college is an initiative to make this knowledge mainstream. The college has adopted the Gandhian ideas into its lifestyle and work ethics.

He talked about the participating villages creating a Village Energy and Environment Committee which determines the rates the villagers will pay for the solar panels and identifies which of the poorest residents of the town will go to the college for training. The students received 6 month training programme learning about solar panels and storage batteries before returning home where they now maintain and repair the systems.

Quoting Alvin Toffler, while sharing his experiences to work among the rural people, he said, “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

Inspiring the students with his educational works in villages, he said, “If anyone wants to live and work in a village, there is one thing you must

have- your sense of humour. You have to go through an unlearning process where you are coming as a human being first. The only way to gain respect is actually to show that you can go down to their level and become a human being and live with them and work with them.”

Answering to the students’ questions, he said, “Change comes out of conflicts, not violent conflicts but non-violent conflicts of approaches or methods. Solution does not come from outside, it comes from within itself.”

In his address, Fr E Abraham, SJ, Director of XLRI said, “Dr. Kurien’s remarkable life and achievements are an embodiment of his faith in the ability of the common man to exercise control over his destiny. We decided to institute this annual oration to commemorate Dr Kurien’s legacy — because his life and work exemplifies the model for a responsible management leader, combining business skills with the larger good of the society and nation-building.”

Reminiscing his association with Dr. Kurien, Fr. Abraham also shared some anecdotes on Dr. Kurien’s momentous career and his extraordinary leadership skills, “XLRI’s relationship with Dr. Kurien goes back to over 23 years. I personally had an enriching association with Dr Kurien and was greatly inspired with his strategic foresight and single-minded determination in executing his vision for the dairy sector and more importantly in helping raise the living standards of millions of rural milk producers across thousands of villages in India.”

The event was also graced by Meagan Carahan Fallone, head of global strategy and development at Barefoot College, besides Fr E Abraham, SJ Director of XLRI and Dr. Pranabesh Ray, Dean (Academics), XLRI.

The Association of MBAs (AMBA) is the international authority on postgraduate business education. Its accreditation service is the global standard for all MBA, DBA and MBM programmes. The association connects MBA students and graduates, accredited business schools, and MBA employers in more than 110 countries.

ValHalla 2015XLRI hosted the 4th edition of VALHALLA from 24 to 26 July, 2015 at XLRI campus.

The three-day extravaganza included a mélange of events ranging from dance, drama and debate to various sporting events and were participated by students from other leading B-Schools in the country including IIMs, XIMB, SIBM, and NMIMS along with the host school.

Valhalla 2015 was inaugurated by Dr Pranabesh Ray, Dean (Academics) at XLRI and Fr James Santhanam, SJ, Dean (Student Affairs). The event commenced with a spellbinding performance by Prince Dance Group, the dance troupe from Odisha.

The second day was marked by the Kabaddi event conducted by Pro Kabaddi League players. More than 10 teams participated and all the players received the Pro Kabaddi merchandise from Star. The day also witnessed prelims of all the sporting events that had teams of all the participating B-Schools compete with each other. Competitions were held in cultural events too. The group dance competition was won my XIMB and

there was a tie between XLRI and XIMB in the street play competition.

As in the previous years, Valhalla 2015 yet again presented some of the best talents in the field of music and dance in their Pro-Nights. After the performance by Prince Dance Group on the first day, playback singer Shilpa Rao enthralled the audience at the Pro-Nights on the second day.

The third day witnessed the finals of different sporting events. Teams of the participating institutes battled it out in the game of football, basketball, throwball, volleyball, badminton, chess, pool and table tennis. Stage play, fashion show and the Valhalla

debate added to the cultural aspect of the fest on its final day.

This year’s Valhalla chapter concluded with the performance by XLRI band – Bodhi Tree that included a special performance by members of 2003-05 batch.

In tandem with XLRI’s spirit of For the Greater Good, Valhalla has always had an undertone of social welfare to it. This year too, Valhalla 2015 came forward to support Milaap, a crowd-funded micro-financing cooperative, and handed over more than Rs 2. 5 Lakh collected during the event.

Note on Valhalla:

Valhalla, the annual sports and cultural fest, organised by the students of XLRI Jamshedpur saw its conception in 2012. Valhalla means the hall of heroes in the Norse mythology and aims to provide a wide array of events for students to take part in; ranging from several individual activities to team sports and cultural events.

37th MAXI Fair, the annual disguised market and consumer behaviour research fair conducted by the Marketing Association at XLRI (MAXI), was held on 16 and 17 January, 2016 at XLRI campus, Jamshedpur.

MAXI Fair 2016 was themed on Digital India. Keeping in sync with the theme of the event, for the first time the entire fair ground was enabled with Free WiFi.

Highlights of the fair:

MAXI Fair 2016 conducted marketing research for some of the top FMCG companies like HUL, Mondelez, Marico & PepsiCo Limited and ventured into research for business

to business category for the first time in association with The Tinplate Company of India (TCIL).

MAXI Fair 2016 partnered with Ola Cabs for a remote controlled Race Track that was designed by the members of MAXI team.

Another highlight of the event was the Cleanathon as a part of the Banega Swachh India campaign in association with the leading hygiene product brand Dettol to carry forward responsibility towards a cleaner India.

Laser Tag and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (drone) show were the key attractions at the event. India’s famous street magician, Babban Khan, keeping a few tricks up his sleeve, was another

crowd puller.

Events like Miss Jamshedpur - a talent hunt competition, Cooking without Fire - a cooking contest and drawing competition for school children were organised on both days of the event. Court Marshall – a play was staged by members of DRACULA- the Dramatics Club of XLRI.

The fair concluded with a live performance by one of India’s most loved comedian Raju Srivastava.

CyrUs Mistry iNaUgUrates New Xlri CaMpUs The new adjoining campus of XLRI was inaugurated by Cyrus Mistry, Chairman, Tata Sons.

The inaugural ceremony was held at XLRI Campus in Jamshedpur on 17 November, 2015 in the presence of T. V. Narendran (Chairman, Board of Governors at XLRI & MD - Tata Steel India and South East Asia), Fr E Abraham, SJ (Director of XLRI), Dr. Pranabesh Ray (Dean - Academics, XLRI), Fr. S George (Dean – Administration, XLRI), Dr. NS Rajan (Group Chief Human Resources Officer and Member of the Group Executive Council of Tata Sons) and other dignitaries.• The new XLRI campus, which is

a contiguous extension of the existing Jamshedpur campus, is spread over an area of 7 acres. The carefully thought-out architecture houses a new learning center, an international center for Global MBA programme and hostel facilities for boys and girls.

• The New Learning Center comprising 26 state-of-the-art classrooms with a seating capacity for over 2000 students at any point of time is meticulously designed to create spaces that support innovation and encourage lively discussions. There are 15 classrooms, each with a capacity for 75, and six syndicate rooms (50-60 seats each). A 75-seater computer labisfittedwithlatestserversand workstations to facilitate the learning process. Keeping in context the growing pool of outstanding student applicants the new learning center has two large classrooms (125-seater each) and two small classrooms (60-seater each).

• Fr. McGrath Residence - The new multi-storiedhostelfacilityforfirst-

year students has 384 single-room accommodation for boys and girls.

• Thetowering,six-floorinternationalcenterincludesfouroffices,65-seater classrooms, 96 rooms with attached washrooms and eight suites. Comfortable dining facility, relaxing lounges and upfront reception desk are few of the noticeable amenities at the international center.

• The computing resources include latest servers and workstations, state-of-the-art campus network and 90 MBPS raw bandwidth WAN connectivity. There are high-end servers, which host the XLRI web page, mail and SNTP server, Oracle, Lotus notes, SAS, DB2 and other softwares.

ENSEMBLE 2015, the annual national management conclave was conducted in XLRI’s Jamshedpur campus with great fervor. The theme of Ensemble 2015 was Progressive India: Winds of Change.• The event was inaugurated in

the presence of Fr E Abraham, SJ, Director of XLRI, Fr S George, Dean – Administration, XLRI, Fr James Santhanam, Associate Dean - Student Affairs, and guest of honour Shyaam Subramanian, Senior City Director at Teach for India.

• In his address, Subramanian recounted his personal experiences of working for Teach for India and the new progressive leadership required to propel our nation to greater heights by ushering in the winds of change. He emphasised on the importance of having conviction in our vision, inspiring leaders and a need for collective dialogue.

• Ensemble 2015 witnessed participation of around 3000 teams from top B-Schools in India including IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-L, FMS, IIM-S, NMIMS and MDI. ADMISSIONS OFFIcEThe XAT and XLRI admission process was simplified to make it easy for students to apply. These steps included reducing number of forms to be filled and number of documents to be sent by the candidates to XLRI. XAT application was made mobile friendly. More than 20 percent of candidates applied through mobile platform. As a result of this, the number of students appearing for XAT saw a decline of 5 percent but number of candidates applying for XLRI increased. We received approximately 10,000 more applications for both BM and

HRM programmes. Though it is not measured formally but based on the estimates, our programmes would be best in the country in terms of ratio of number of seats to number of applications. This year, XAT questions were designed to measure different intellectual and risk taking capabilities. XAT continues to be the most challenging and fairest MBA entrance examination in the country.

PLAcEMENT OFFIcEPlacement PGDM(BM) and PGDM(HRM) A total of 386 offers were made, with highest domestic package touching 48 Lakh per annum. The average

and median package was of 18.5 and 18 lakh, both an increase from last year.

This year placements were highly critical, as the largest ever batch of 361 students were testing their mettle in a not so optimistic job scenario. This year’s placements have many achievements to its credit. A total of 132 companies participated, of which 36 were first-time recruiters to XLRI. This year for the first time offers in HR Analytics and Executive Search firms were made. The diversity of roles offered for students reaffirm the institute’s standing as Asia Pacific’s best B school for HR.

The consulting domain for the first time saw participation of McKinsey and Company, The Boston Consulting Group, Accenture Strategy together offering their coveted roles. FMCGs have retained their faith in XLRI by hiring around 30 percent of the batch in marketing, sales and HR. ITC was the largest recruiter with 12 offers. Other companies include P&G, RB, HUL, Kellogg’s, Pepsi, Coca Cola offering their roles. E-commerce

majors like Uber, Ola, Paytm and Flipkartalsoparticipated.

TAS, ABG and Mahindra led the conglomerate offerings in general management. First-time recruiters like Kotak, Karvy apart from the regular recruiters — Goldman Sachs, Standard Chartered, ICICI, Mahindra, Yes Bank — from finance domain ensured that front-end roles were offered to students majoring in the field.

PGDM (GM) 2014-15PGDM (GM) is a one-year programme that caters to the needs of the organisations that would like to hire experienced professionals. On a continuous basis PGDM (GM) has been well received by reputed organizations like Microsoft, Accenture, JP Morgan Chase, KPMG, Daimler, Amazon, Atos, Goldman Sachs, Genpact, Infosys, OYO Rooms, Pepper Tap, Sutherland, TCS, Virtusa and more.

CTC offered for the Class of 2015 (106 eligible students) has increased by 15 percent from the previous batch — in domains like consulting, general management, technology, automobile, telecom, e-commerce, and more.

PGDM (Global BM) 2014-16XLRI Jamshedpur introduced the two-year, full-time Global Business Management programme in 2013. The Class of 2016 consisted of candidates from various IITs, NITs, BITs and others with a good mix of fresh graduates as well as experienced professionals.

The new course started by XLRI was well-received by the industry. Leading organisations such as Standard Chartered, Baker & McKenzie, Sandvik, Sutherland, ICICI Prudential and Quikr among others made offers to the batch.

The Class of 2016 students got offers from organisations across various industry domains like IBM, Lenovo, Assa Abloy, PwC, Tata Steel, 3M, Novo Nordisk, Coffee Day, UAE Exchange Financial Services and many others. The top CTC offered grew by over 100 percent, while the median and average grew by 25 and 27 percent from the previous batch.

The Class of 2017 attained 100 percent Summer Internship offers across various profiles in finance, strategy, operations and marketing. Organisations such as SEBI, Rothschild, Sterlite, Zycus, BlueStar India, HealthKart and others were prime recruiters.

• In exchange, we sent 50 XLRI students to 14 business schools in nine countries.

Global MBA• The second batch (Class of 2014-16) consisted of

17 XLRI students from India, 19 Tongji University students from China, and 13 Case Western students from four countries (USA, Japan, Nigeria and Colombia). This batch is due to graduate at the annual convocation in April 2016.

• The third batch (Class of 2015-17) was admitted inSeptember2015.Aftercompletingthefirstsemester at Tongji in Shanghai, the class is currently undergoing its second semester at XLRI. There are 18 students from XLRI, 17 from China, and 8 from Case Western (USA, Argentina, Trinidad & Tobago, and Nigeria)

• Case Western has conveyed its decision to pull out of the Global MBA consortium after the third batch completes its full program. Therefore, admission of the fourth batch has been kept in abeyance until a new partner is found to take Case Western’s place.

Visiting Scholars• Dr. Sarosh Kuruvilla and Dr. Marya Besharov of the

ILR School at Cornell University conducted a week long workshop on “Research Quality, Productivity, and Qualitative Methodology” for FPM students in July 2015.

• Dr. Akshay Rao of the Carlson School at University of Minnesota spent a day conducting seminars on Marketing for faculty and students in September 2015.

• Dr. Shyam Giridhardas of George Washington University spent a day conducting seminars on Management Consulting Skills and Authentic Leadership in January 2016.

XLRI in collaboration with Allied Institute of Management Studies (AIMS, formerly known as Al Abbas Institute of Technology or AIT) has had 11 batches graduating from its Dubai campus. The alumni from these batches are in different positions and are managing diverse portfolios in firms in GCC countries, India and other countries. The twelfth batch will be graduating in this calendar year. There is one more batch of business management students undergoing the programme at different levels and they will be graduating in the next calendar year.

SIR JEHANGIR GHANDy LIBRARySir Jehangir Ghandy Library came into existence in 1949 when the institute was established. It was named after late Sir Jehangir Ghandy, the first Chairman of the Board of Governors of XLRI in February 1972. It is housed in the ground floor of a spacious and centrally air-conditioned building overlooking the administrative block.

The Library strives to cater to the information needs of the faculty, research scholars, PG students and other members of the institute. It is the heart of the institute and acts as a centre for the collection of literature predominantly related to all functional areas of management and its allied subjects. It continuously strives to develop a comprehensive collection with well formulated collection development strategy of print as well as digital resources useful for teaching, research and reference purposes. As of now the Library houses a veritable collection of 67585 books; 16,964 bound back volumes of print journals (some of them dating back to the days of its inception); 167 national and international print periodical publications; 26 online database; 14,100 PG and Doctoral dissertations; 1,452 CD-ROMs & DVDs;

590 video cassettes; 500 annual reports of companies and more than 5000 publications of Government and Reserve Bank of India.

The Library is fully automated and wifi enabled, equipped with the latest technologies. RFID tags and Tattle tapes have been fixed in all books which facilitate self-check in and self-check out of books by the users without the assistance of library staff.

The Knowledge Portal is one of the unique features of the library which acts as a platform to access the entire digital resources of the Library by a single click. Library has established a full-fledged Digital Resource Centre with more than 26 commercial online database including journal database like ProQuest (ABI/lnform), EBSCO (Business Source Complete, Psych Articles and Academic Premier), Emerald Insight, Science Direct, J-Gate, Sage online , Taylor and Francis online, Wiley online, Springer online, Oxford University Press online, Inderscience and JSTOR Archives, , covering almost 21334 full text e-journals; The e-book portal e-brary covers 5500 + e-books; Other industrial and law related database like Bloomberg, ISI-Emerging Markets, CMIE’s 9 online products, IBID, CRIS INFAC, Indiastat.com, and Supreme Court on CD-ROM,) Legal Pundit etc. are also available in library besides myriad collection of popular open source resources.

VIRtUal IntERaCtIVE PROgRaMMEVirtual Interactive Learning represent an attempt to break away from traditional lecture style delivery of education by reaching out and offering education to anyone, anywhere through online platforms open to all who have internet access. Gradually it has become the undisputed and most sought after e-learning institute of the country.

XLRI is the first Indian Management Institute to introduce the concept of virtual interactive learning. By offering 12 month courses like Postgraduate Certificate in Business Management

(PGCBM) and Postgraduate Certificate in Human Resource Management (PGCHRM) through the Virtual mode we have witnessed around 5500 students graduating from the above courses till date.

In collaboration with technical partners, HGEIL (Hughes Global Education) and UCS (Unified Collaboration Services), we offer PGCBM & PGCHRM. There are 108 (Hughes- 64 and UCS-44) classrooms across the country to facilitate the programs. The Graduation Ceremony and the Campus Component are the

major highlights of the VIL Programs, where students get an opportunity to visit XLRI and get the experience of the Campus life.

XLRI-VIL Programs have become a catalyst in aiding the working executives with the opportunity of formal learning to working executive at a convenient time schedule from their own city without disrupting their profession for enhancement of their knowledge, skills and competencies in their respective professions.

Network SecurityIn order to strengthen the campus LAN security, XLRI has incorporated security system through the firewall without any intrusion to user’s privacy. We have installed the systems and procedures to ensure the safety and prevention of unauthorised access or damage to computers using wireless networks.

At the same time, routers were clustered into zones and each zone was given a password protection to access internet. This ensured enhanced security to avoid misuse and optimise the access to the users.

cERTIFIcATE PROGRAMMESHR ProgrammeExecutive Diploma in Human Resource Management was started in 2005 as a joint initiative between L&T, M&M and BHEL which caters to the needs of HR managers to enhance their knowledge, skills and abilities in the field. In 2014 we have increased the scope of the Human Resource Management Programme by opening it up for participants from other companies too. The programme is of 16 months with six terms. The programme comprises of 15 compulsory courses spread over the first five terms and the sixth term is exclusively devoted to Action Research Based Project. The first six batches of this programme have already graduated. The seventh batch will be completing their programme by March 15th and the eligible students will graduate on April 11, 2015. The eighth batch started on February 2, 2015 at XLRI campus, Jamshedpur.

Agri-Business Management Programme

Postgraduate Certificate in agri-business Management: XLRI along with Nagarjuna Fertilisers and Chemicals Ltd (NFCL), Hyderabad, designed a unique six -month Certificate programme in agri-business management for developing skills for the agriculture sector. This six-month programme provides a virtual, self-learning environment for working professionals in agriculture sector so that they can upgrade and refresh their technical knowledge. The fifth batch would be completing their programme by March end and the eligible students would graduate on April 11, 2015.

In addition to the course work the current batch of students worked on projects covering different stages of agriculture. Projects on seed production studied cotton seed production under drip and surface irrigation systems. Nutrition management and plant protection projects studied advancement of bio-technology in plant nutrition; strategic sourcing of water soluble fertilisers; new product introduction in micronutrient segment and use of inorganic mulches and drip irrigation for crop protection. Projects in value addition focused on socio economic empowerment of tribals in Jharkhand; conversion of banana fibre into a marketable product; using coffee extract to prevent contamination of ground water and also for making wine and jam and growing Alphonso mangoes for export. The projects providing new insights for increasing productivity and profitability in agricultural sector have been well appreciated.

The students also organised three discussion forums. These include; FDI in Indian Agriculture - Good or Bad? moderated by Sanjay Kumar Sahu; Agricultural Subsidies – Boon or Bane? moderated by Mahani Reddy and Impact of monsoon on Indian Agriculture, GDP and Inflation moderated by Deepa Ponnappa. All the three discussion forums had active participation from different people in the sector.

The Behavioural Research Lab is persistently involved in generating insights through different undertakings. As an extension to the study Financial Inclusion: A Study of Willingness to Save Among the Urban Lower Income Group Population, last year we moved to the second phase of the study to quantitatively validate the model established in the initial study and subsequently derive a more statistical significant justification of the prevailing behaviour among the target group. Field data was collected from areas in and around Jamshedpur and the resulting output in the form of a report will be shortly published in a suitable journal. The lab also undertook a study to decode the motive among the working professionals behind taking up a Virtual Interactive Learning programme. It involved both projective techniques and focus groups and the final triangulations leading to an insightful finding.

A second study was done to measure the effectiveness of these Virtual Interactive Learning programmes, the idea was to understand how beneficial the programme in real world is for the professionals and what are the

COMMIttEE agaInSt SExUal haRaSSMEnt Committee Against Sexual Harassment at the workplace (CASH), has been constituted to promote gender equality at XLRI. The committee regularly meets once in a term to proactively discuss methods of prevention and address redressal issues as per rules.

Significant activities:• Sessions on gender sensitivity were successfully held in

all orientation programmes – namely BM, HRM, GMP and EDC programs. It aimed to make the new students aware of the committee and its working.

• CASH formed a student wing of the committee responsible for generating awareness through various activities on campus. The student wing in association with Ensemble conducted a debate competition as part of the awareness drive.

• The student wing plans to conduct a photography competition among students. The competition will invite entries on the following themes: Shades of Womanhood, Women: Creating, Doing, Leading and Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Work.

• CASH organised Celebrating the Spirit of Women, a small function, around Women’s Day, especially including the women workers on contract.

alUMnI OFFICE REPORt Alumni Homecoming The annual Homecoming was organised on 7 and 8 November, 2015. A total of 150 alumni participated in the event this year. Alumni from the batch as early as 1956 participated in the two-day event hosted in XLRI campus. Nine of the selected alumni were felicitated with the Distinguished Alumni Awards under six different categories.

Summer MeetsThe Summer Meets this year were organised 8 May to 6 June, 2015. The meets are a platform to renew and remain connected with over 13,000 alumni of XLRI. The Director, National President and Alumni Chairperson participated in seven alumni meets held in Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, and Mumbai. The Director and Prof. Sarin were present in all the meets.

Reunions on campusThe Silver Jubilee Reunion of the batch of 1990 was held on 12 and 13 December, 2015. The batch of 1979 and 1980 together celebrated their 30th year reunion on 19 and 20 December, 2015. The batch of 1975 was back in campus for their 40th reunion. More than 250 alumni participated in these reunions.

XLRI Endowment Fund The total contribution till February is over Rs.5.75 crore. A classroom in the New Learning Centre has been dedicated to the batch of 1989 for its contribution exceeding Rs.1.5 crore. The batch of 1984 has also pledged Rs.1 crore and has a classroom dedicated to them in the New Learning Centre.

The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) and the Executive Fellow Programme in Management (Exec-FPM) at XLRI are Doctoral level (equivalent to PhD) programmes.

The full-time FPM is a residential programme that trains prospective scholars to become skilled and innovative researchers and teachers in various aspects of management. It primarily aims at preparing participants for careers as faculty members at premier academic institutions.

The part-time Exec-FPM is partially residential in nature and caters to the need of working professionals and B-school faculty to grow into scholars for careers not only in management research and teaching but also in management practice, consulting, training and development.

Eight full-time, doctoral students and 12 Exec-FPM doctoral students are working under their Thesis Advisory Committees and are on the final stage of their research.

During 2015-16 the FPM and Exec-FPM students participated in several national and international conferences. They have published papers in several journals/proceedings of conferences. The publications are listed in the Research and Publication Brochure.

Overalltheconferencefocusedonbuildingacirculareconomytoensurethatthee-wasteisrecycled,reusedandreducedtoavoidendingupintolandfills,whichhasbeencausingenvironmentalandhealthhazards.Towardsthisgoal,someoftheobstaclesandsolutionswerediscussedinsmallgroupworkshops.Sinceoneofthemajorobstaclestomanagee-wastesafelyandeffectivelyisthelackofreliabledatathatposesachallengeto(a)policymakerswishingtodesignane-wastemanagementstrategyand(b)toindustrywishingtomakerationalinvestmentdecisions;theconferencehaddiscussedmodelsonestimatingtheextentofe-wastebeinggenerated.

In1980CentreforEducationManagementLeadershipandResearch(CEMLR)wasestablishedwiththeprimarypurposetodisseminateprofessionalexpertiseandknow-howinthefieldofeducation.Itsactivitiesincludedesigningandhandlingworkshopsoneffectiveteachingmethodology,developingtrainingaidsandundertakingspecificprojectstohelpclientorganisationsdevelopwaysandmeanstoevaluatetheirvariousprogrammestoachieveexcellence.CEMLRconductstrainingprogrammesandworkshopsineducationmanagement,modernmanagementtechniquesforawidevarietyofeducationaladministrators,teachers,andyoungeducatorsinbusinessschoolsandcolleges.

CEMLRestablishedSamarthyaasitsyouthwingin2012.Duringtherecentyears,SamarthyaundertheguidanceofProf.ISFIrudayaraj,thecoordinatorofCEMLR,hastakenupthepressingneedinJamshedpurtohelpschoolstudentstofindmeaningintheirlivesandthushelpthemrealisetheirfullpotential.Intheirendeavourtoachieveitsgoal,Samarthya,focused

ondevelopingasupportivesysteminschools,byorganisingatwo-dayworkshopforteachers,MeettheMentors,on18and19September,2015,underthetutelageofCEMLR.Theprogrammewasattendedby25teachersfromthreedifferentschools.Andthereafter,therehasbeengrowingdemandfromtheprincipalsofnearbyschoolstoorganisesuchprogrammefortheirteacherstoo.

Withitsvisionofbeingthefirsttoreachouttotheschoolyouthintheirintellectual,emotionalandsocialaspirations,Samarthyahadconductedaround70interactivesessionsreachingoutto700studentsinthreeschoolsinJamshedpur.ThesecondeditionofDISHA15,acareercounsellingworkshop,wasorganisedinNovember,2015.Morethan20studentsofXLRIgaveguidanceon19differentstreamstostudentsofclasses9th,10th,11thand12th.Over300students,parentsandteachersparticipatedintheevent.Subsequenttothisevent,theschoolstudentswereengagedthroughthefacebookpagewithintroductionofthespeakerswhowereinteractingwiththemin

theevent.Intheweeksfollowingtheevent,studentswroteabouttheirstreamseverySundayonthefacebookpageforawideraudience.

SamarthyaalsohostedReflections’16,the4theditionoftheannualconference,on16January,2016,withthemainthemeLet’sTalk.Thiswasaimedatbringingoutintheopenthedifferencesinperspectivesofthestakeholdersinthreeareas–parentchildrelation,cybersecurityandchangingtimes.Theconferencewasattendedbyrepresentativesfrom8schoolsinthecityandtheconferencesawthefootfallofover120peopleofallages.NowthatSamarthyaisgoingtobefiveyearsin2017,ithasplansoforganizingmemorableeventsfortheyouthtofindmeaninginallthattheydo.

• ThePHEDdepartmentshouldundertakemicrogroundwatermappingatblockandpanchayatlevel.Thehandpumpsshouldbeinstalledonlyinthoseareaswherethegroundwaterissuitableandsafefordrinking.Inotherareas,theemphasisshouldbegiventopipedwatersupplyschemessincein33outof38districtsthegroundwateriscontaminated

• Theprivatecompaniescurrentlyinvolvedintheestablishment,operationandmanagementofthepipeddrinkingwater,haveestablishedsoundtechnicalsystemsforprovisioningsafedrinkingwater.However,theiroperationandmanagementneedstobeimproved.Suitablemonitoringandfeedbackmechanismsneedtobedeveloped.

• Campaignsshouldbelaunchedtoimprovesanitationconditioninanganwadi’sandschools.Theanganwadistaff,parentsandschoolteachersneedtobeinvolvedinthecampaign.

• Establishvillagewaterandsanitationcommitteewiththeirrolesandresponsibilitiesclearlydefinedanddiscussedbeforetheformation.However,forMulti-VillageinMulti-GramPanchayatschemeVWSCwillnotbeanappropriateinstitutionforinvolvingpeople.Ahydraulic-based,two-tierpeople’sinstitutionneedstobecreated.

• PHEDstaffneedstobereoriented,theirtechnicalunderstandingisstrongbutthehumanartifactisweakandtheyareincapableofinvolvingthecommunity.CapacitybuildingtrainingsneedtobeconductedforPHEDdepartmentofficials.

ENTREpRENEuRSHIp DEvELopMENT CentreEntrepreneurshipDevelopmentCentre(EDC)wasestablishedasoneofthecentresofexcellenceofXLRIin2007withChairpersonProf.PrabalKSenheadingthecentre.

Inpursuanceofitsobjectiveofpromotingentrepreneurshiplargelythrougheducationandresearch,afull-time,six-monthprogrammeonentrepreneurshipmanagementunderthetitlePostGraduateProgrammeforCertificateinEntrepreneurshipManagement(PGP-CEM)waslaunchedinMarch2010.

Thisprogrammehasbeendesignedtoprovidecompetency-basededucationtoeligiblecandidatesandpromoteentrepreneurshipinJharkhandandrestofthecountry.Theprogrammeispursuedinsuchamannerastoencouragecriticalandlateralthinkingandintegratetheorywithpractice.Apartfromanumberofcoursescoveringconceptualandoperationalaspectsrelatedtoexecutionofentrepreneurialventures(totalingaround360contacthours),aprojectformulationcomponent,carriedoutunderthementorshipofafacultymember,constitutesanintegralpartoftheprogramme.

Theinstituteispleasedtonotethatover80percentofthestudents,ofthelastfivebatchesofPGP-CEM,arerunningtheirownentrepreneurialventures,beingoperatedindifferentpartsofthecountry,andafewoutsideIndia.

Fivebatcheshavinggraduated,thesixthbatchiscurrentlyinsessionandisscheduledtocompletethecoursebythefirstweekofMarch2016.Thecurrentbatchcomprises55studentsand40percentofthemcarrysomelevelofentrepreneurialexposure.Theyaredrawnfrom14statesbesidestheUnionTerritoryofDelhi.Theyaremarkedbyvariededucationalbackgroundsrangingfromhumanitiesandgeneralscienceandcommercetoengineeringandlaw.Withthiskindofdiversityamongthestudentsintermsofworkexposure,domicileandeducationalbackground,considerablepeerlearningisexpectedtoaccruetoallconcerned.

Apartfromthesix-monthacademicprogrammeonentrepreneurshipmanagement,EDCorganisesshort-termtrainingprogrammesinrelatedfieldsforentrepreneursandotherstakeholders,andworkstowardcreationanddisseminationofknowledgeinthebroadareaofdevelopmentofenterpriseandentrepreneurship.ThechairpersonofEDCandotherscontributescholarlypapers

tojournalsandfornationalandinternationalconferencesasapartoftheknowledgedisseminationexerciseoftheCentre.

Global BM: Academic Achievements Certifications: The students of the batch have complemented their academic rigour with certifications such as CFA Level I, II, and III, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, CSCA (Certified Supply Chain Analysts) and NCFM.

Clubs: The students of Global Business Management have been actively involved in consulting club, BRACE (Business Review and Consulting Enterprise), and in finance club, WIFT (Weatherhead International Finance and Trade); wherein they engage in simulation exercises, interact with industry professionals, deliver presentations, solving case studies, and discuss various current issues of business world.

Startups: Some of the Global Business Management students have established their own start-up. Drago Allure was started to serve the underprivileged sections and promote children’s education in Jamshedpur and neighbouring areas.

Sports: Students from this programme have participated in sports competitions in China as well as in the annual XLRI vs IIM-C Meet.

Internships: The students were put under a four-week internship in Jamshedpur. The projects assigned covered various domains like finance, marketing, and operations.

Academic Committee (AcadCom) serves as a facilitator between the students, the professors and the administration. Accordingly, most of the activities carried out by the committee are critical jobs involving interaction with professors regarding deadlines, raising the concerns of students to the administration and coordinating with the entire student community for carrying out academic activities. Though the role played by AcadCom in its key responsibility area is that of a facilitator for lectures, schedules and grades, it involves constant monitoring of the activities going on at campus while making sure that all stakeholders agree to the proceedings. Also, Acadcom helps the Dean’s Office conduct various tasks including choosing of electives and conducting examinations.

The committee organised XL Utsav, a sports and cultural event, for faculty, staff and students. Cricket, football and badminton matches among other sports event were played between faculty and students.

Association at XLRi for industrial and Operations Management activities during 2015-16

Bull-Whip:An ice-breaker event for the incoming batch saw a participation of over 140 students.

Helios:Helios, a three-stage event leading to a case study presentation in the final round, had entries from many top B-schools across the country. Prof. Ajith Kumar and Prof. Ravi Shekhar Kumar were the judges in the final round.

Synergy: AXIOM (jointly with CRUX and FINAX) organised XLRI’s annual national business conference Synergy on 6 November, 2016 with the theme Recipe for Sustainable Profit Growth in India. AXIOM also conducts guest lectures from international experts in logistics and supply chain and arranges for live projects for the students.

AXIS:AXIS, a quarterly magazine of AXIOM, was launched during Synergy featured articles from students on India’s logistic challenges. The keynote speaker for AXIOM’s chapter was Dinesh Shyamsundar, software design center leader for WABCO. Shyamsundar encouraged students to apply innovation to make businesses sustainable.

Pinnacle: A case study competition saw participation from some of the brilliant minds of the top Indian B-schools. A plethora of innovative solutions on last mile connectivity and hyper local delivery were presented. Over the course of the two days, enriching discussions from the point of view of both corporations and startups provided everyone with a great learning experience.

TheCronos: The Cronos, a quizzing league, tests participants’ understanding of operations and supply chain management concepts and their application to real business problems.

One of the oldest student societies, Marketing Association of XLRI, was launched in 1971. The society is also registered under The Societies Act of India.

Significant events hosted during 2015-16• MAXIBazaar: A product innovation and marketing strategy event was

organised for the junior batch.

• Ad-Twist: An online competition involving rebranding a product and getting traction on social media.

• FoodforThought: A lecture series by industry experts from various marketing areas. Industry stalwarts from Spice Mobile and Millward Brown interacted with students during the event.

• CircusMaximus: Ensemble 2015 saw MAXI’s involvement in the form of the flagship marketing event, Circus Maximus, where participating teams had to solve a real life case study.

• SDM: This was the fourth consecutive year that Sales and Distribution Management (SDM) live projects were obtained by MAXI from leading FMCG companies like HUL, ITC, Marico, L’Oreal etc. for the senior BM batch as part of the SDM course component.

• MAXIFair: The 37th MAXI Fair, themed on Digital India, was held on 16 and 17 January, 2016. This edition of the fair saw participation from five major companies as research partners — HUL, Pepsico, Mondelez, Marico and TCIL. This was also the first time market research giant Nielsen partnered with MAXI Fair as the official market research advisor and conducted a workshop on campus for the participating research teams.

PiXL, the photography club of XLRI, is responsible for covering all student conducted events throughout the year at XLRI. The team provides photographs for branding of XLRI across social media, news reports and information brochure.

Activities organised by ciiYi during 2015-16 JamshedpurRun:The annual Jamshedpur Run organised by the Yi (Young Indians) Network, a movement promoted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), was flagged off by internationally acclaimed boxer, Aruna Mishra, on 16 August, 2015.

Kshitij: Kshitij, an annual event of CII Yi was held on 27 September, 2015. The event provides a unique opportunity to school children of Jamshedpur to showcase their cultural skills. This event brings together children from all strata of the society for an inter-school cultural competition.

YoungAchieverScholarship:The Young Achiever Scholarship, initiated in 2014 covers the tuition fees of the less privileged students for an entire year, was awarded to deserving candidates.

NoSmokingChallenge: CII Yi launched a two-day No Smoking Challenge wherein students enrolled themselves along with a buddy to help them jumpstart a smoke-free future.

SilentAuction:Silent Auction, an annual charity drive, was conducted on 11 November, 2015 as part of the Diwali celebrations on campus. Memorabilia and souvenirs collected from the students and faculty of XLRI was auctioned off and the proceeds were given to lung cancer patients in Tata Memorial Hospital.

Sambhava:As part of Ensemble, XLRI’s annual management festival, CII Yi conducted a social entrepreneurship event Sambhava where teams from India’s top B-schools participated.

TEDxXLRI: TEDxXLRI was organised on 13 December, 2015 on the theme Soaring High. The speakers for the event were Managing Director of Leadership Matters Inc. and Ex-Sr. Executive Vice President & Chief Learning Officer at Reliance Industries Ltd., Anand Pillai, a social rights activist, Harish Iyer, India’s first woman civilian BASE jumper, Archana Sardana, and Founder-CEO of Knolscape, Rajiv Jayaraman, a stand-up comedian, Kunal Rao, Journalist Meghna Pant, founder-CEO of Banyan Nation, Mani Vajipeyajula, and musician Rasika Shekar.

PlaceComm co-ordinates with the institute’s placement cell for the summer internship process and the final placements process on campus.

The summer internship placement of 366 students of the 2015-17 batch completed within two and a half 2.5 days. XLRI continued its parallel placement process called Parivartan for the students who voluntarily withdrew from the conventional placement process and sat for interviews in various top notch NGOs and not for profit organisations. Parivartan this year saw participation from the likes of companies like Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation, Tata Trust and eVidyaloka.

In the corporate placement process firms like ABG, HUL, Kellogg’s, Godrej offered overseas roles. Amongst the BFSI sector, top players such as JPMC, Carlyle, Avendus Capital, and European Hedge Fund made offers. All the FMCG majors – Coca Cola, HUL, ITC, Johnson & Johnson, Kelloggs, Mondelez, Nestle, PepsiCo, RB and others offered multiple roles for students to intern in.

The final placement for the 2014-16 batch was also a success with XLRI witnessing the placement of its largest ever batch of 361 students. The institute attracted participation from 132 recruiters (inclusive of 36 first-time recruiters) and a total of 386 offers were made. XLRI hosted Accenture Strategy, McKinsey and Company and The Boston Consulting Group for the first time, rolling out offers to both BM and HR students.

Once again, XLRI students were able to prove their mettle whereby 102 students were offered PPOs (Pre-Placement Offers) from their summer internships and competitions.

entRePReneuRSHiP ceLLThe flagship event of E-Cell Ideakon was organised in November. It is a lecture cum networking event wherein speakers inspire students to become entrepreneurs. This year’s edition of Ideakon saw founders of young and successful startups like housing.com, Fashionove.com, Medinifi, Pharmeasy, Asian fox developments share their entrepreneurship experiences with the students.

During Ensemble E-Cell conducted its annual b-plan competition ‘Genesis’, which saw enthusiastic participation from colleges all over the country. Total prize money of Rs 70,000 was awarded to the two most promising ventures.

The biggest milestone for E-cell in the last academic year was the launch of a food delivery startup – Gravycart in Jamshedpur. Gravycart facilitates food delivery from a number of renowned restaurants in Jamshepur to the residents. This provides the E-Cell members an experience of planning and setting up a business venture.

Student Affairs Council is the apex student body heading all committees and representative council for all student activities on campus. It strives for continuous betterment of the entire course and student amenities and manages the various domain committees on campus – academic, placements, co-curricular and extra-curricular. A host of new initiatives were taken up by SAC this year, with the following key achievements:

• Launch of XL Dock, an App that brings the Institute Academic Information System (AIS) to the students on a mobile platform

• First ever Online Voting system with the provision of hosting SOPs online to facilitate efficient and transparent election process

• Cycles were bought for students to aid ease of commutation between the two campuses.

• The old campus was renovated for seniors with upgraded WiFi system and installation of security cameras. Food complex, salon and night canteen facilities were introduced in the new campus.

• SAC also ensured that the student budget allocation has been fair and done to ensure equal growth opportunities to all committees on campus

• SAC also oversaw the organisation of two grand fests on campus – Valhalla and Ensemble.

• SAC continued the tradition of making XLRI a socially aware campus and collected over Rs 5 Lakhs in donation for social causes through various events on campus. This money has been donated across various trusts and social welfare activities.

The External Linkages Cell is responsible for maintain social media presence of XLRI and for co-ordinating with print and TV media to ensure that only the accurate information is reported about the institute. Over the last year, ExLink has tirelessly worked towards branding and promoting XLRI across all media forums including aspirant relations groups (PagalGuy, InsideIIM, etc.), social media networks (regular updates on Facebook, live-tweeting major events on Twitter, news on XLMeriJaan, YouTube), print media (pre- and post-event press releases for all major campus events).

In July 2015, ExLink conducted Rebrand, the ice-breaker event for the junior batch. The participants had to design a branding strategy for sustaining a brand as big as XLRI.

During Ensemble, the flagship cultural fest of XLRI, ExLink conducted Advocatus Diaboli, an engaging debate, which saw participation from B-Schools across India.

Throughout the year, ExLink has been active in almost every campus event. We covered, recorded and livestreamed all the major XLRI events like the 2nd Dr. Verghese Kurien Memorial Oration, 24th JRD TATA Oration on Business Ethics, Alumni Homecoming 2015, IdeaKon and TEDx XLRI. All of these events were livestreamed on the XLRI Jamshedpur YouTube Channel managed by ExLink.

ExLink also launched several initiatives for student-sourced branding, the chief among them being the Quill-A-Thon, a monthly themed submission contest for featuring our students’ best works on XLMeriJaan, a student blog of XLRI.

Out of the Box: CRUX began the new academic year with its icebreaker event, Out of the Box, for the junior batch of 2017. The two-round event invited everyone to don the hat of a consultant with the teams standing a chance to win attractive cash prizes.

CRUX hosted an interactive session with Vice President, Group Strategy at RPG Enterprises, Avartan Bokil. The session was on demystifying the life and work of consultants. This session was of particular interest to students who were planning to make a career in consulting.

To prepare the XLRI juniors for Summer Internship Placement, CRUX conducted an interactive sessions on case study.

The 5th edition of XLRI’s annual management conclave, Synergy-2015, was organised on in November in association with FINAX (the finance club) and AXIOM (the operations club). The theme for the conference was Recipe for Sustainable profitable Business Growth in India.

Strategikon, the flagship strategy-based even during Ensemble, saw a huge turn-out. This was accompanied by Drishtikon, an annual paper presentation competition.

Orion, a live-consultancy project based event, was hosted for the students of XLRI. The event gives students an opportunity to work on live projects based in Jamshedpur. The project running for four weeks gives opportunity to students to learn the critical nuances of consulting, with specific focus on deliverables, and client-side interaction including regular client-visits.

Sportscomm, the sports committee of XLRI, organised several events round the year.

The Independence Cup saw the campus buzzing with sportsmanship spirit. Three teams NIT Jamshedpur, IIT Kharagpur and XLRI, battled it out in XLRI campus.

The XLRI recorded victory in the third consecutive year in the annual XL-IIMC meet.

CricBlitz, a cricket tournament, was organised for senior and junior batches of XLRI. To engage the poker addicts, a series of poker nights were organised.

XL-Arena, a sports quiz, was organized during Ensemble.

Other sports events organised by SportsComm include Shuttle Masters, TT Pratyogita, XL-Futsal League, chess, pool and carrom tournaments.

inFRAcOMInfracom acts as a bridge between students and the administration to facilitate the maintenance of student hostels and canteen. The day-to-day activities include reporting and resolving of infrastructural issues related to student residences and keeping a check on the quality of food served in the canteen.

Infracom also assists the Ensemble and Valhalla teams during their events by ensuring snacks and dinner arrangements for students. The committee is responsible for facilitating residential allocation for exchange students. The team maintains a robust feedback network through their online portal that was launched this year, and the Facebook page which the students use for highlighting specific issues and providing general feedback.

Samarthya was established to reach out to the school students in the city of Jamshedpur in January 2012 by a group of 8 to 10 students from the batch of 2013. Samarthya is recognized as the youth wing of the ‘Centre for Education Management, Leadership and Research’ (CEMLR). CEMLR is headed by Prof. I.S.F. Irudayaraj, the senior most professor in the department of Organizational Behavior at XLRI. Prof. Irudayaraj is also the chief advisor of Samarthya. This is the fourth year of operations for Samarthya.

Over the last one year, team Samarthya has grown tremendously into a strong 40 member team and has consistently conducted weekly sessions in 15 sections (classes IX–XII) of MNPS, DBMS and Loyola School focusing on social and emotional development of school students. The consistent interaction with students has helped us establish a bond with the students and the trust that they show in us by sharing their issues is what motivates us and the entire team.

Team Samarthya conducted the second edition of hugely successful - Disha ‘15, the career counselling workshop on November 8th, 2016. Over 20 students from XLRI gave guidance on 19 different career streams for the students of classes 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. Over 300 students, parents and teachers attended the event.

Team Samarthya hosted Reflections ‘16 - the 4th edition of our Annual Conference on 16th January, 2016. The theme of Reflections ‘16 was “Let’s Talk”. This was aimed to bring out in the open the difference in perspectives of the stakeholders in three areas – Parent Child Relation,

SAMARtHYACyber Security and Changing Times. The conference saw participation from over 8 schools and a footfall of over 100. The stakeholders discussed and reflected on the difference in perspectives and then presented their ideas in the open forum.

Team Samarthya organized “Meet the Mentors: Train the Trainers”, a workshop for school teachers facilitated by CEMLR with the objective of helping teachers be better mentors for their students and increase the ambit of Samarthya’s collaborators.

Team Samarthya also plans to chart out a developmental program for children with thalassemia, for which we have engaged with Anurag Foundation and also visited their site in order to get a better understanding about the cause. The team is also in discussion with Mr Ronald D’Costa - an advisor of the team, to extrapolate Samarthya’s understanding of childrens’ need unto thalassemic children.

On September 9th and 10th, team Samarthya associated with Tata Main Hospital in organizing the 2-day ‘World Suicide Prevention Day’ program which involved an “Awareness Walk”, Group Discussions and Debate competition. Over 15 schools and colleges including NIT Adityapur participated in the event. Team Samarthya also organized an essay writing competition for school students as part of the program.

To further expand the reach of team Samarthya and interact with the school children an active Facebook group with more than 500 members is maintained. The Facebook page of team Samarthya has more than 1000 followers. Team Samarthya has recently started an initiative of sharing online, education and career patterns of students of XLRI from various fields to inspire the school students to broaden their horizons and enable them to understand various fields.

Fire@x, Forum for Industrial Relations at XLRI, organises activities to promote student interest in Industrial Relation.

The Forum for Industrial Relations at XLRI is responsible for promoting Industrial Relations among the students of XLRI and other top MBA schools across India.

Fire@x conducted the 7th National IR Confernece in January this year in partnership with IIRA, FES, Britannia and IOCL. The chief guest at the conference was Principal Labour and Employment Adviser,Govt of India, PP Mitra.

The visit to ITC Munger (450 km from Jamshedpur) was organised successfully by FIRE@X in December, 2015. The visit was conducted for the third year in succession. The students get a chance to witness the life in ITC’s tobacco factory and interact with several trade union leaders.

Fire@x also conducted the second season of the biggest IR management quiz league, a series of three quizzes over the course of two months. The event witnessed participation from top 30 B schools in India and was a widely appreciated.

Among other events of Fire@x were the events conducted during Ensemble 2015. Apollo, a simulation event where students had to bargain among themselves, was large participation. Strike or Yield, the flagship event of FIRE@X witnessed participation from top 20 B-schools in India.

FiRe@XFinance Association of XLRI, is a student committee that endeavours to promote finance related activities in XLRI. It collaborates with the leading BFSI institutions to provide an industrial interface to the students of XLRI by means of organising workshops, guest lectures, seminars, and information sessions.

Significant events of the year:

• It recently played host to RBI’s e-Baat session, an event that saw participation in huge numbers from students and banking professionals.

• FINAX helps students streamline and pursue a career in finance by conducting sessions on equity research, trading and fundamental analysis.

• The XLRI Student Fund, an initiative of FINAX, is XLRI’s in-house equity fund, which gives students the experience of managing an investment portfolio. The Student Fund’s investment philosophy is of value investing through fundamental analysis. The sector analysts generate quality research to aid investment decisions.

• FINAX welcomes the incoming batch with the ice-breaker event, the King of the Pit, wherein students get an experience of market trading.

• An annual finance conclave, Synergy, was organised in Mumbai where eminent industrial figures came together to interact and debate issues related to finance sector.

• The merger and acquisition competition, Dealbook, saw 340 teams participate from over 49 B-schools. The teams where required to submit a presentation which was adjudged by XLRI faculty.

FinAX The FINAX team

The XLRI Nature and Adventure Club (XLANC) is the youngest formal committee on campus.

XLANC commenced the academic year by organising a rifle-shooting workshop for XL students at the Rifle Club in association with the Jamshedpur Rifle Club and Tata Steel Adventure Foundation. This was followed by a wall-climbing course at the newly inaugurated climbing gym at TSAF. The committee also arranged a cleaning drive on the banks of Dimna Lake in collaboration with JUSCO and Environmental Foundation of India.

In October a trek to Dalma Hills was arranged for the students.

During Ensemble in November Paintball and Body Zorbing activities were hosted for the participants.

In December and January, XLANC conducted national level quiz, Gaia’sChallenge. The quiz was hosted on the TSAF Facebook page and was carried out in two rounds and boasted participation by more than 350 teams from top B-schools of India.

ISEP is a student body representation of the International Student Exchange Programme at XLRI. This functional committee handles the responsibility of managing tie-ups with foreign colleges. At present the committee has alliances with 13 universities in 9 countries across USA, Europe and Southeast Asia.

Students can study a term in these colleges for a period of three months while learning from a different culture and experiencing a plethora of changes. ISEP oversees the application process to these colleges and is responsible for establishing new tie-ups. Every year around 60 students opt for the exchange programme

This year ISEP has been host to 14 exchange students from the UK, France and the Philippines.

ISEP also organised XL-MUN during ENSEMBLE 2015 in which several topics were discussed ranging from the WTO issue of agricultural subsidies to the FIFA scandal.

SAPPHIRE, the HR committee at XLRI organised several events round the year. Following are some of the significant events.

CHAOS: A live simulation event which introduced the participating teams to the concept of negotiations and body-shopping and required the teams to maximise the value of their human capital.

Battle HRoyale: Battle HRoyale is a national HR quiz league with a case study competition held in the final round. Around 400 teams participated from over 50 B-schools across India.

Inferno:SAPPHIRE along with Fire@x organised Inferno, at the Ensemble theme launch. SAPPHIRE also organised of War of Wits, the flagship HR event at Ensemble, the annual XLRI management fest. The event saw participation from the top HR B-schools all across the country. SAPPHIRE also teamed up with FIRE@X and CRUX to organise Apollo, the HR domain event at Ensemble, exclusively for XLRI students.

LiveProjects:A target for SAPPHIRE this year was to get more live projects for students and that was achieved in the form of projects on live business problems being faced by organisations like Backspace Consulting and VenueMonk.

LeadershipTalks:SAPPHIRE also conducted leadership talks led by senior consultants from KPMG.

Synapse:SAPPHIRE launched its annual publication Synapse, inviting content from industrialists, academicians and students.

NationalHRSurvey:SAPPHIRE launched the 3rd National HR Survey in association with Towers Watson, the results of which will be shared at an industry-facing event to be conducted in summer 2016 in collaboration with Towers Watson.

XLRI hosted the 4th edition of the inter-college sports and cultural extravaganza Valhalla 2015 in July in its Jamshedpur campus. This year the theme of the fest was Heroes and a wide range of events spanning across sports, culture and adventure were organised.

Valhalla hosted pro-shows by Prince Dance Group and singer Shilpa Rao. The fest witnessed a footfall of over 800 with participation of around 400 students from some of the leading B-Schools.

A series of online events during Valhalla increased its presence across 60 B-Schools in India.

Valhalla never disappoints in its social ventures. This year we carried out the first ever cleaning drive at Dimna Lake in association with JUSCO. We donated more than Rs 2.5 lakh for NGO’s like MILAAP that work towards the betterment of society.

The SPICMACAY XLRI organised a number of captivating events in the academic year 2015-16.

A Manipuri dance performance by Sinam Basu Singh was conducted on 14 April 2015.

During Valhalla, the committee organised a very unique event- Raagalaya and Laasya. Raagalaya was the classical vocal & instrumental competition and Laasya, the classical dance competition.

A lively Talent Night 2015 was organised for all students in August 2015.

SPICMACAY also hosted the First Film Festival in campus in association with Federation of Film Societies of India, Eastern Region and Kalamandir Celluloid Chapter Art Foundation, Jamshedpur, in September.

The student society invited Pandit Salil Bhatt during the VIRASAT Concert Series organised in September. Pandit Salil Bhatt, born to Grammy Award Winner – Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, played the Satvik Veena, his own creation.

In October the teams organised a puppet show by Dolls Theatre. Dolls Theatre is a Puppet Theatre Group headed by Sri Sudip Gupta, a contemporary creative puppeteer, of Kolkata.

In association with the THEPLAXI committee, SPICMACAY hosted the Dandiya Night.

SPICMACAY XLRI has always delighted XLers by upholding Indian tradition. The team presented SANSKRITI, showcasing folk and classical dance performance during Alumni Homecoming in November.

As part of Ensemble 2015, SAARANG 2015 featured Sangam, an Indian classical music group, comprising of young vocalists and instrumentalists who seek to blend Hindustani and Carnatic classical music to bring forth a modern and contemporary narrative to the age old art forms.

SiGMA SPicMAcAYSIGMA-oikos (Social Initiative Group for Managerial Assistance) is a committee at XLRI that undertakes socially relevant projects on a regular basis. In 2012, SIGMA tied up with the international agency oikos based in Switzerland.

SpotCleaning: The team conducted two Spot Cleaning drives this year where volunteers from XLRI beautified spots and painted walls.

Daan-Utsav:JamshedpurJoyFest: The student society anchored and facilitated the Joy of Giving festival in Jamshedpur from 2-8 of October. During the week, students from XLRI engaged in a variety of events such as donating clothes and dry ration, visiting an old age home, raising funds for kids in a local orphanage and a friendly football match with the mess workers.

UnifiedSportsEvent: SIGMA-oikos in association with a local NGO Jeevika, held a Unified Sports Event for children with special needs in November. Students of XLRI engaged in various sporting activities with the students of Jeevika.

BloodDonationCamp: SIGMA-oikos organized two blood donation camps this year in July and November respectively.

MentorMentee: SIGMA-oikos in collaboration with Kasidih High School and Kerala Samajam Model School launched the Mentor-Mentee Counseling Initiative. In this initiative, XLRI students will be mentoring school children belonging to financially disadvantaged background.

Manthan-TheCaseStudyCompetition: Sigma-oikos in association with team Ensemble organized Manthan, a case study competition as part of Ensemble 2015.

SIGMAtoons: The initiative encouraged XLRI students to send out socially relevant messages through impactful cartoon strips.

The Branding Committee of PGDM (GM) is the single point of contact of the batch with the outside world. It is the public relations department of the batch.

The responsibilities of Brandcomm can be divided into online and offline activities. The online tasks are aimed at providing a window into the PGDM-GM life and include specific outcome based activities such as creating brand awareness for PGDM-GM, uniting the PGDM-GM alumni community and maintaining a healthy footprint across various social media channels including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, pagalguy etc.

We also manage print media coverage and are responsible for timely delivery of press releases for every event that the batch organises.

Major activities this year include publishing placement brochure and branding XLerate.

OPeRAtiOnS cLuBThe Operations Club of PGDM (GM) was formed primarily to focus on operations related activities in the batch.

The club has organised various workshops where GMP students from different background talk about their experience (working methodology, trend in their industry etc.) for the benefit of other students.

The club has also organized various training sessions like Six Sigma Green Belt, PMP and plans to organise trainings like Six Sigma Black Belt, Supply chain etc. in future.

The club was also actively involved in organising a case study competition called Engage during Xlerate 2016, a sports event.

The Career Development Committee focuses on skill gap assessment and development needs of PGDM (GM) participants. It coordinates with different clubs and interest-based groups to inculcate the peer-learning culture in fellow batch mates.

XLeRAte 2016The third edition of XLerate, national-level sports, leadership and cultural festival, was organised by PGDM-GM for one year MBA programme students in February, 2016 at XLRI campus, Jamshedpur.

XLerate 2016 kicked off its events with XL Aasha — a unique sporting event for underprivileged students. The fest was launched with the aim to serve as a connecting platform for all the students of one year MBA programmes.

In the three-day meet students from premier management institutes across India, such as IIM- C, L, S, MDI- Gurgaon, SP Jain- Mumbai, XIM-Bhubaneshwar, Great Lakes, Chennai, competed in various sporting, leadership, and cultural events.

This year the students received offers from organisations across various industry domains. Organisations like IBM, Lenovo, Assa Abloy, PwC, Tata Steel, 3M, Novo Nordisk, Coffee Day, UAE Exchange Financial Services and many others participated in the placement process. International offers were also made to students. The batch of 2015-17 attained 100 percent placement in summer internship offers across various profiles in finance, strategy, operations and marketing. Organisations such as SEBI, Rothschild, Sterlite, Zycus, BlueStar India, HealthKart and others were prime recruiters.

tHe ALcOM RePORtThe Alcom of Global Business Management (GBM) engages and interacts with the Alumni of XLRI in conjunction with Alumni Office. GBM, being a flag bearer in XLRI’s pursuit to stamp its mark on the International Business Arena, strives to benefit from the rich experience of XLRI’s Alumni. The GBM Alcom also strives to meet and network with the Alumni who are abroad.

The alumni committee of Global BM met Mr. Nipun Talwar in Shanghai. Nipun is an alumni of the 1998-2000 batch of XLRI and has worked with Unilever since his graduation. The alumni committee facilitated an interaction with him over lunch with the Global BM students. Nipun gave valuable career advice to all the students, especially to those interested in marketing and also shared some of his old memories from college. It was a pleasant experience to meet a senior successful XLer.

In India, the Alcom has played a significant role in the success of the Summer Meet and the Alumni

Home Coming. The summer meet saw the GBM-Alcom take on important responsibilities in ensuring the Planning, Logistics and the Invitations were in order. The summer meet also served as an opportunity for the students to meet the entire active Alumni for the first time in time in their city of work. For example, in the Bangalore alumni meet, a meet and greet session was held prior to the Summer meet wherein the Alumni from various companies and walks of life gave invaluable advice to the current students who were in midst of their Summer Internships.

During the Silver Jubilee Homecoming of the 1989 batch, the Alcom also initiated a conversation between the Administration and the batch of 1989 to reflect, and chart a plan for what the GBM and other courses in XLRI should look like so that the MBA education offered at XLRI meets the Industry and students expectations. As hosts in the new International center, the Alcom facilitated various interactions with the visiting Alumni who are now in regular touch with the batch.

As a new course, it is vital that the GBM program gets good coverage in the Alumni circles of XLRI. The Alcom strived to do this by insightful presentations during the summer meets and the Various Alumni events on XLRI campus. The GBM-Alcom worked with the other programs on campus to unitedly deliver all the Alumni events. Alcom also worked alongside Placecom to bring prospective companies to recruit and engage with students.

2015-16 has been a year of tremendous progress for Global Business Management with greater awareness levels amongst the Alumni Community and the Industry. The GBM-Alcom is proud to be a partner in this initiative and will continue to play its part in furthering the interests of Global Business Management and XLRI.

• Various resources in XLRI and in the other two schools — School of Economics & Management at Tongji University (China) and Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University (USA) — are appropriately allocated to support and sustain the academic programmes under six themes across three countries: ensuring adequate distribution of case material, books, and other academic

readings; scheduling of classes, and other complementary classes, if any.

• The faculty personnel policies and procedures support and enhance academic priorities and objectives

• The Global MBA’s academic programmes are relevant for the students of the three countries and that the students are well served by the programme

• The academic programmes are effective; and take steps to continuously improve them for a desirable outcome

The Global MBA Public Relations committee was founded when the Global MBA program of XLRI was flagged off in 2013.

As the torch bearer of Global MBA program, the Global MBA Public Relations committee handles most aspects of Global MBA program’s internal and external promotion and communication; producing collateral to support programs, events and initiatives. Communication is a fast-moving target, and the committee is always looking for ways to “get the word out” while maintaining its focus on the students and on the consistency of its message.

The mission of the Global MBA Public Relations is to promote positive relations between the Global MBA batch and its many constituents; enhance internal and external communications. It is responsible for the development, design, preparation, and coordination of college publications; conceptualizes, produces and edits written communication, including newsletters, press releases, statements, talking points and opinion pieces; coordination of trade shows; coordination of events on campus and the design and maintenance of XLRI website.

GLOBAL MBA PuBLic ReLAtiOnS

inFRAcOMThe Infrastructure Committee strives to provide a healthy environment for the holistic development of students. By acting as a facilitator between the Administration and the students, resolving issues related to the hostel and the mess, and organising special events to enrich student life, the Global Business Management Infracom makes the International Centre feel like a home away from home.

The four-member team, comprising of two Senior Executive Members and two Junior Members, ensures that the Indian students have a comfortable stay while studying in XLRI and our partner schools in Shanghai and Cleveland. Additionally, the committee looks after the well-being of the students from our partner schools while they reside at the International Centre of XLRI. The committee works closely with the International Centre management to address grievances related to accommodation, recreational facilities, internet services and food.

The committee was instrumental in securing convenient housing facilities in Cleveland for the students’ semester at Case Western Reserve University in 2015. Apart from being in close proximity to the management school, each apartment was comfortably furnished and had a well-equipped kitchen.

In keeping with the tradition of the program, the Infracom mobilized help from the Indian batch and celebrated Diwali with grand festivities in Shanghai in 2014 and 2015 along with the American and Chinese cohorts. The committee is also involved in planning events for celebrating the Chinese New Year in XLRI and in which the students from all schools participate enthusiastically. The first Chinese New Year celebration in 2015 was attended by more than three hundred students, faculty and family members of faculty who appreciated the cultural events and traditional Chinese food that were prepared by the Global BM students.

The Infracom is constantly attuned to the needs of the American and Chinese cohorts and ensures the best possible representation of their cuisines in the mess. The committee also maintains a fund for students’ birthday celebrations and involves all students to bring cheer to the birthday boy/girl by arranging for a cake cutting party exactly at the stroke of midnight.

Additionally, the committee plays a vital role in placements by handling the logistics, arranging for video conference facilities, providing refreshments, and ensuring that recruiters have a comfortable stay at the International Centre. By handling these various services, Infracom aids the Placement Committee in ensuring a smooth and stress free placement process for candidates and recruiters alike.

The Global BM Sportscom ensures, amidst the hectic schedule and the toll that assignments, classes, and academics, in general, have on the students of an MBA college, our batch mates have access to the best sporting infrastructure, equipment and an overwhelming participation at all the 3 universities that come together to form the XLRI Global BM program. It is the responsibility of the Sportscom to keep students updated on time regarding all the sporting events that happen on the 3 campuses that the students visit to facilitate and encourage widespread participation. The Sportscom consists of 2 members from the senior and 2 from the junior batch.

The Global BM Sportscom works in tandem with the other Sporting Committees from the BM/HRM programs as well as the 1-year General Management Program to ensure that students are able to participate in the sports they love during the course of the program, keeping in mind the fact

that these might be the last few years that the students play these sports at a College/University level.

The Global BM Sportscom has been an integral part of the various sporting events that have been a part of XLRI over the years and has made its presence felt in a big way. Right from ‘Ratanjee’ that looks at identifying the best new sporting talent to enter XLRI to winning ‘Valhalla’ and the prestigious XLRI-IIMC Meet, Global BM students have been at the forefront all along. It is no strange coincidence then that the college registered 3 consecutive XLRI-IIMC wins for the first time in a history spanning almost 50 years with the introduction of the Global BM program.

Being Global citizens, the Global BM Sportscom is active internationally by working alongside the sporting committees in Tongji University, Shanghai and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA in encouraging students to train and leave their mark at an International level. The Sunshine Cup at Jiaotong University, Shanghai saw Global BM Students sweat it out along with 16

other teams at the Province level tournament consisting of various sports which includes Badminton, Table Tennis, Tug of War, Football etc. where students formed lasting relationships with students from some of the most prestigious universities from Shanghai. These relationships were extended beyond the tournament wherein students from the Global BM were invited by CEIBS (China Europe International Business School) University for a friendly football match.

The foreign cohorts showed great enthusiasm in sports at XLRI. This motivated the Global BM Sportscom to organize many events such as a Table tennis tournament which saw a participation of more than 50 students, and a Badminton Tournament which saw a participation of 40 students. These events created great bonding and lasting memories among the students. Sporting events extended to virtual gaming as well with the students having a fun, frolic and intense gaming experience in an evening of Counter-Strike and Age of Empires Tournament.

We periodically access the skill level of students via mock interviews and group discussions. Based on evaluations, we provide behavioral and area specific feedback. Additionally, we facilitate interview readiness by providing industry and company information. We help the students improve their CVs with respect to content and presentation, while ensuring that only verified information is entered. The CVs go through a comprehensive verification process where each point is checked and verified. We also provide feedback via sessions conducted by CDC members, faculty members, alumni and also by eminent personalities from different sectors. All these activities help the students in preparing themselves for the placement process and the industry.

Major Responsibilities:• To periodically assess the intellectual, analytical and

• To act as communication facilitators between Placecomm and rest of the students i.e. to gauge the mood of the peers regarding the working and transparency of Placecomm and calling upon them to answer the same

• To make a database of the interview questions asked during the placements of the previous batches of Global BM

• To maintain a database of CVs and provide feedback to improve them

• To encourage peers to participate in Business and Case study competitions that are related to the specializations of their interest

• To gather information or data about companies that are planning to recruit from Global BM

Academic activities (2015-16)• CDC organized a leadership talk by Mr.SunilKhanbahale

- MIT Sloan fellow, innovator and entrepreneur, where he spoke about Re-imagining Kumbh Mela.

• Mock Interview and GD preparation session hosted by Mr.Nishit, Alumni of XLRI and Cofounder of Jabong, was coordinated by the CDC team.

• Regular GD sessions were organized at the Weatherhead School of Management where students from Chinese and US nationalities were usually invited to participate in discussions and debates with the members of the Indian cohort in the program.

• Created study groups for each specialization (Marketing/Finance/Operations) to share the learnings and fill in the learning gaps

• Organized Mock interviews at Tongji University where the participants were evaluated by peer group and feedback was given by the CDC team.
