As our newest Capilano University graduates, I feel excited about your futures and where your lives will take you from here. I’m sure you, your family and friends are feeling that excitement as well.
Within each of you are the values that have inspired our vision of CapU in the next few years. These values of innovation, commitment and collaboration are reflected in the sacrifices you’ve made to turn your goals into reality, particularly during these unprecedented times as the world continues to respond to COVID-19. Curiosity can inspire imaginative approaches in everything you do. And in graduating, you are joining a network of alumni who are doing just that.
I believe your accomplishments from here will enrich a legacy for generations of CapU students who will follow you here.
Congratulations to you all!
Paul Dangerfield President & Vice-Chancellor Capilano University

Congratulations to all of our graduates for reaching this triumphant milestone. This is also a time to celebrate with the people who journeyed with you along your path of learning and self-discovery. University life is challenging, and along the way you were supported by family, friends and classmates. Your instructors were also there to encourage you to finish and finish well.
As you leave Capilano University, be confident in knowing your education is valued in today’s world. Wherever your life may take you, you have the skills and creative thinking to become the change makers and self-assured leaders that our society needs.

4 2020 CONVOCATION
DINI STAMATOPULOS Bachelor of Communication Studies Degree
Dini Stamatopulos has made the most of her time at Capilano University while completing her Bachelor of Communication Studies degree and Associate of Arts degree in Global Stewardship. Her learning opportunities included experiences abroad when she participated in the 2012 Archaeology Field School and 2017 Hungary Field School. In 2017, Stamatopulos represented CapU at the Great Canadian Sales Competition and placed in the top five among a field of over 400 competitors.
Stamatopulos was a senior residence advisor for CapU Residence and actively engaged in student advocacy with the Capilano Students’ Union (CSU). She served as the social activities coordinator on the CSU’s Board of Directors where she helped create the annual CSU “Rail Jam” event. Stamatopulos also volunteered in CapU’s 50th anniversary celebrations for the Capilano University Alumni Association.
Her interest in social and environmental justice and world politics combined with her work ethic have helped her develop as a change leader in her community. She also writes and performs slam poetry at school and community events and leads workshops for youth on art as a mental health outlet.
Stamatopulos credits her family, friends, the faculty and staff at Capilano U, and her empowering bosses and team at student residence for supporting her experience and achievement as a graduate this June.
STUDENT SPEAKER
4 2020 CONVOCATION
For more than 20 years, Yuri Fulmer has been helping businesses to grow and communities to thrive. From the purchase of a single A&W franchise, Fulmer seeded a business portfolio worth $60 million by the time he was 30. In 2010, Fulmer founded Fulmer Capital Partners (now Fulmer & Company) which owns and invests in a group of companies in the hospitality, business-to-business, manufacturing, construction, digital technology and consumer service industries.
Fulmer is also committed to serving local communities, involving himself in non-profit, educational and arts organizations and his role as an accredited director for a number of corporate and civic boards. In 2019, Fulmer established The Fulmer Foundation. One of the Foundation’s biggest undertakings is the management and support of Goodly Foods Society—a social enterprise working to repurpose surplus produce from local suppliers, while creating employment opportunities for people in need.
In honour of his business achievements and community contributions, Fulmer was recognized in 2008 as one of Canada’s Top Forty Under 40. He is a recipient of the Spirit of Vancouver Award and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal. In 2010, he received both the BC Community Achievement Award and the Order of British Columbia—the province’s highest honour—for his “dynamic entrepreneurship and committed volunteerism."
As chancellor, Yuri Fulmer will also serve as a member of Capilano University’s Board of
Governors and the Senate. A key ambassador for the University, the chancellor’s role is
a voluntary one that includes conferring credentials at convocations and performing
other official ceremonial duties.

GONFALONS
Gonfalons are banners suspended on a crossbar. They are one of the traditional components of academic ceremonies that lend colour and dignity to processions and stages. At Capilano University, gonfalons are used in the Convocation ceremonies and represent each of the University’s five faculties: Faculty of Arts & Sciences (teal), Faculty of Business & Professional Studies (dark blue), Faculty of Education, Health & Human Development (orange), Faculty of Fine & Applied Arts (red) and Faculty of Global & Community Studies (light green).
THE COAT OF ARMS
Supporters
A bear in blue with light blue wings is depicted on each side of the shield. Each bear stands on a rocky base.
In local First Nations mythology, bears are symbols of strength and are a link between the natural and supernatural realms. In medieval bestiaries, bears were said to give shape to their own young; therefore, bears represent the ‘forming’ of the young— a metaphor for education. The wings refer to the idea of aspiration and can allude to ravens, another local creature immortalized in First Nations mythology, associated with intelligence and creativity. The rocky base refers to the nearby Coast Mountains, which are a dramatic aspect of the local landscape.
Crest
Two books with blue binding and white pages are stacked with their bottom edges visible. On either side are several maple leaves and dogwood flowers, all in white. This is set on a wreath of twisted cloth in white, light blue and blue.
The books are a traditional symbol of education and the arrangement is inspired by the corporate emblem used when we were Capilano College. The maple leaves and dogwood flowers make reference to the fact that the University is located in British Columbia, Canada.
Arms
The main part of the shield is white, depicting a salmon. Salmon are an important feature of local wildlife and are shown here in the artistic style of the original inhabitants of the North Shore area. The waves at the bottom of the shield indicate the University’s location near the Pacific Ocean and the top section represents the nearby Coast Mountains.
MACE
The mace depicts the authority vested in the University to grant degrees and also incorporates the history and tradition that surrounds both the territory near our regional campuses and the vision of Capilano University.
The mace’s design portrays the unique territorial qualities of our region, which extends from Deep Cove to Mt. Currie to Earls Cove on the Sunshine Coast. These qualities include reference to the animal world, to the landscape, to directional symbolism and to the human element. The mace is carved from yew, which is a natural wood found in our region.
Responsibilities for bearing the mace originated in the office of the Bedellus, or Beadle, and date back to the University of Glasgow, which was founded in 1451.
The function of the Bedellus was to keep the students in order, and on the days of public functions, he arranged the seats for dignitaries.
The duties of the Bedellus have varied greatly over the centuries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the incumbent was required to regulate bonfire settings and purchase university supplies. Officially, the Bedellus is responsible for administration of the university’s facilities.
The most prominent role of the Bedellus was and continues to be on ceremonial occasions, leading the academic procession and carrying the university mace. In 2020, our ceremonial mace will be carried by Stephen Williams, vice-chair of the Capilano University Senate.
LEGACY CANOE
In celebration of our 50th anniversary, Capilano University commissioned Squamish Nation master carver Ses siyam (Ray Natraoro) to build a traditional Coast Salish canoe as a legacy for future generations and a symbol of the University’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.
The 30-foot-long seaworthy canoe, named Skw’cháys in the Squamish Nation language, was carved at the North Vancouver campus in the winter of 2019, giving students, employees and the community the unique opportunity to witness the transformation from tree to canoe, and learn first-hand about Coast Salish traditions and culture.
HOW CAPILANO UNIVERSITY GOT ITS NAME
In 1968, residents of the North Shore submitted names for the newly formed regional college operating on the grounds of West Vancouver Secondary School. The name Capilano was selected to honour Chief Joe Capilano, a well-known Coast Salish carver and spokesperson on history and culture and an advocate for education.
Born in 1850, Chief Capilano was a respected leader and chief of the Squamish Nation (Skwxwú7mesh). Skwxwú7mesh is a reference to ‘people of the sacred water,’ as the Squamish River was well-known for its
curative qualities. Capilano University’s North Vancouver campus sits on Skwxwú7mesh territory, which encompasses parts of the Lower Mainland and Sea-to-Sky Corridor.
In 1906, Chief Capilano led a delegation of B.C. chiefs to England and met with King Edward VII. While there, he was introduced to Canadian poet Pauline Johnson. They became good friends and after she moved to B.C.’s West Coast, Chief Capilano shared his legends, which she later recounted in her books and poetry. Capilano University was named after Chief Joe Capilano
of the Squamish Nation. Photo (taken in 1906) courtesy of the North Vancouver Museum and Archives.
