MESSAGE FROM

THE CHAIRMAN

AeU has opened the door to higher education, giving working adults the chance to continue learning and to upgrade their skills and knowledge, thus improving not only themselves, but also their families, professions and, ultimately, their country


Dear Graduands,

It is with great pleasure that I am able today to congratulate the graduands of 2014. The drive and aspirations of each graduating class in our tertiary institutions is always inspiring but in AeU, it is more than just a convocation ceremony. It is an achievement because it takes real commitment to have pursued and completed a degree programme whilst having to balance work and family commitments. It involves grit, determination and talent. Each of you have shown that you have it, and it’s now a new phase of a journey.

I extend my heartiest congratulations to all those graduating from AeU today more because you have made a vision of the future and taken this remarkable step to upskill and upgrade your credentials. Your achievement lies not merely in the degree you are bestowed with today but in the perseverance and hard work that you have put in, more so as working adults.

Shaping Education Landscape

To date, AeU has enrolled over 16,000 learners, with more than 5,000 having successfully graduated. This, in itself, is an achievement in lifelong learning. By focusing heavily on technology, AeU has opened the door to higher education, giving working adults the chance to continue learning and to upgrade their skills and knowledge, thus improving not only themselves, but also their families, professions and, ultimately, their country.

Built on the philosophy that education should be democratised, AeU has focused on creating an affordable and accessible pathway to higher education, while placing importance on flexible entry requirements, a learner-friendly academic system, and a blended pedagogy that combines different modes of learning. Each of these components is designed to fulfil the diverse needs of its learners and to create learning environments in which responses to the challenges of the 21st century.

For working adults, who make up the majority of AeU’s learners, the motives for pursuing higher or continued education are usually associated with personal development and career advancement. Moreover, in today’s globalised economy, the knowledge capital of a country’s labour force is considered vital for national growth. Without continuous betterment of the people’s education, a country will certainly find it difficult to compete on the global stage. Thus, providing the means for these working adults to partake in education has great implications for both lifelong learning and national economic development.

Looking back, the university has certainly come a long way. In just being over seven years, AeU is still relatively young, especially when compared to other universities. Having said that, AeU is proud of its progress and anticipates more milestones in the future. To this end, we are pleased to be acknowledged by the Right Honourable Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, who announced at the ACD Annual Meeting in Kuwait that the most successful project of the ACD is the Asia e University.

Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning covers all types of learning activities which are undertaken on an ongoing basis with the aim of improving knowledge, skills and competence. It could be formal, nonformal and informal, and includes those types of learning which earn you a diploma or degree as well as those earn you no paper qualifications whatsoever but provide you with new knowledge or capabilities. Lifelong learning is also not time-bound. It is about acquiring and upgrading one’s knowledge and skills at various stages in life, starting from the pre-school to post-retirement years.

Where AeU is concerned, lifelong learning is also about providing second chances for people. The ultimate goal is to help the workforce progress in terms of capabilities and competencies. There are many people who could not continue their education at the same time as their peers due to various obstacles. This is their chance to do during their productive years without jeopardising their existing routine. This indicates the need for courses and programmes which suit their requirements and interest. The provision of such courses and programmes necessitates the use of an open and flexible mode such as that adopted at AeU.

Learn, Unlearn and Relearn

Today the world has changed and knowledge is multiplying at a rapid pace. Over 20 years ago, Alvin Toffler famously predicted: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

What we learnt one or two decades ago is just not enough even for survival, let alone for success, in a highly competitive global market. Research indicates that you could have two to four careers in a lifetime, something that is already happening in Asia. So even if you have graduated, you will still need to continue to learn, unlearn and re-learn many different things during the course of your life. In short you will need to be lifelong learners if you wish to succeed. You will have to be prepared for making multiple career choices in the ever-changing global economy.

Conclusion

To all graduating students, while I extend my congratulations once again, I wish to add that learning never stops. It is my hope that you would continue to evolve and persist in your enthusiasm to improve, and to acquire new knowledge and skills.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have contributed towards making today’s event a memorable one. In particular, my deep appreciation to the Ministry of Education, Wisma Putra, Ministry of Finance and the ACD for their continuous support. I also wish to thank members of the AeU Management and Staff for their hard work and keen efforts.

Asia e University contributes to strengthening the human resources foundation of ACD and society at large


Dear Graduands,

On behalf of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), I wish to extend our heartiest congratulations to AeU on staging its 4th Convocation Ceremony. As we celebrate hard work and success today, I feel heartened on behalf of the ACD, to extend our heartiest congratulations to AeU’s graduating class.

As Asia grows in this new era globalization and trade into a world leader, the continent will require a variety of skills and you can be assured that your talent, responsiveness and conscientiousness will hold you in good stead to face the needs and challenges of the future.

It is an honour for Thailand, as Coordinator of the ACD, and I in my professional capacity, to be associated with the AeU’s 4th Convocation Ceremony. Since the historic 1st ACD Heads of States Summit in the State of Kuwait in October 2012, the ACD process has been revitalized. There are numerous important activities and initiatives in the pipeline.

In 2013, the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of Bahrain hosted the 11th and 12th ACD Ministerial Meetings. We also welcome the generous offers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to host the 13th Ministerial Meeting in Riyadh in 2014, the Kingdom of Thailand to host the 14th Ministerial Meeting and the 2nd ACD Summit in March 2015, and the Islamic Republic of Iran to host the 3rd ACD Summit in 2018.

In terms of initiatives, the ACD has ongoing initiatives on food and energy, security, emergency preparedness, poverty reduction and regional connectivity. Among these, the initiative that has the potential to deliver the most wide-ranging impact is regional connectivity. Building on ASEAN’s experience, Thailand will work with all ACD Member Countries to enhance hard (physical connectivity) and soft (trade, investment and travel facilitation) connectivity.

This initiative will deliver physical accessibility, enhanced economic and cultural relations, as well as regional peace and prosperity. Some also refer to this initiative as the Silk Route revival.

Underpinning all activities is the human element. Human resources development is the key ingredient in all ACD endeavours. Without the capacity to understand and implement the concepts being advocated, ACD cooperation or any endeavour for that matter could not move forward.

It is in this context that Malaysia’s Asia e University initiative is so laudable. It is one that truly contributes to strengthening the human resources foundation of ACD and society at large. In the years to come, its graduates will surely contribute to the forward progress of the ACD Community and the global community at large.

The onset of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 is something that we should look forward to with great vigor as it presents a multitude of opportunities for people like you who will lead the next generation to progress and cooperation.

As much as borders are breaking down, we see the onset of a more diverse yet united AEC. This presents a great opportunity for you to continue learning and growing for the good of your country and the people of Asia.

We are delighted to stand beside AeU as it moves steadily in this specific project area of e-education, in which Malaysia is the prime mover. I would like to thank the Board of Directors, President and Management of AeU, for their efforts in making our vision of reputable higher education for the Asian community a reality and for continuously taking it to higher levels of accomplishment.

THE PRESIDENT/CEO

AeU is constantly innovating our pedagogy and programme delivery to cater to the unique learning styles of different segments of learners


Dear Graduands,

Today, a total of 1,200 students are graduating with an AeU degree. This will take place over two sessions, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. We salute and congratulate all of you, our graduates, and all your staunch supporters.

This graduating batch comes from a total of 78 academic and professIonal programmes. Among the graduands are from the inaugural cohort of ‘Program Pensiswazahan Guru’ under the Ministry of Education. These are teachers who have successfully completed their Bachelor of Education (Teaching English as a Second Language) programme.

To all our graduating students, your accomplishment is not to be lightly valued. As our students, you have overcome academic challenges, deadlines, conflicting demands of family, work and study, to finish your studies.

We salute all of you, those who have overcome immense odds to succeed, or those who, despite their senior years, still found the joy and satisfaction to come back to school. Each of you has scaled a mountain and reached its peak. It is a tough challenge to juggle studies, work and family commitments and to persist to the very end. And most important meeting AeU rigorous academic standards along the way.

As we celebrate, let us not forget an important ally who has also an important stake in this venture. In your time at AeU, you have had to work much harder than those who study fulI-time at other universities. I am certain, however, that many of you couldn’t have done it without the encouragement and support of your family, friends, colleagues and employers. People who had stood by you through those long days and nights. Today, let us also not forget to thank them with our success.

Present and Future Developments

AeU has made a strong start on the next lap of its exciting journey. With the foundation firmly laid in the first seven years since our establishment in 2007, the last two years have been focused on consolidating our achievements and cementing the strong ties we have made. 2014, in particular, has been an exciting and productive year. With the underpinning focus on providing a quality education for working adults, AeU continued to break new grounds to entrench its standing as the choice university for working professionals and adult learners.

Across all eight (8) Schools of the University, existing programmes were reviewed and enhanced and new ones introduced to deliver relevance to the ever-changing demands of the market place. To meet the exacting standards of the government as well as students’ and employers’ expectations, we invested considerably in the review of our programmes. Existing ones were refreshed with updated contents and new ones added to fill knowledge gaps and meet niche market needs. Our teaching is designed to balance local issues with global perspectives so that our graduates can be effective locally and globally.New partnerships with industry players were also forged to more actively engage them in mutually beneficial relationships; identifying new and relevant areas of needs and developing programmes to meet those needs.

We are also constantly innovating our pedagogy and programme delivery to cater to the unique learning styles of different segments of learners. Such initiatives include offering more e-learning modules to make learning more accessible and flexible for adult learners, and packaging our courses in modules to meet specific training needs of organisations.

And I am very proud to inform that AeU is currently contributing towards one of the nation’s priority areas in education, that is, the upgrading of our primary school teachers, who are currently diploma holders, to become degree holders. This particular programme is to assist the Ministry of Education in their drive to enhance the qualification of local teachers in the country. More than 3,000 in-service teachers have enrolled in AeU Bachelor of Education programme in 3 areas of specialisation, namely Teaching English as a Second Language,Teaching Malay Language in Primary School and Early Childhood Education.

Deepening our Inks in Asia and the Rest of the World

As with the majority of universities today, where higher education aspires towards globalization, we are similarly developing talent by putting education within the reach of many more individuals.

Even though AeU is regarded as young institution, I believe we have taken great strides in not just building human capital but also by uniting the further education needs of the diverse Asian community. Today, AeU has spread its wings far and wide to ACD countries such as China, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Maldives, and also beyond to non-ACD countries like Denmark, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Namibia, Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, Yemen, Mauritius and the UK.

Our programmes are delivered through smart partnership with learning institutions in these countries. These partnerships provided a host of benefits to the learners. They are able to gain AeU qualifications without having to leave their jobs or relocate to Malaysia. This makes learning a degree from a foreign university more affordable for them. They can pursue programmes that are highly in demand while remaining in their home country.

All the positive developments we have experienced, signal international acceptance of AeU that offers promise of greater strength in the years ahead.

Strengthening Alumni

A key focus for next year and the years ahead are our alumni. To advance this alumni interest, the Student and Alumni Affairs Department has been activated and will shortly be announcing a suite of benefits and activities for our alumni. One key benefit will be the AeU ‘Alumni Continuing Education’ programme which invites our past graduates back for continuing knowledge upgrading at highly preferential rates.

I urge you, as newly-minted alumni of AeU, to connect, reconnect, and nourish one another. Contribute to the growth of your alma mater by helping to shape the culture, character, and potential of this institution. Inspire others who are in the unenviable position you were once in, as multi-taskers straddling numerous heavy commitments.

Our Graduates as AeU’s Reputation Builder

A university’s reputation and growth depend much on how its alumni impact society and how they return to serve their alma mater. AeU looks towards you for your support in fulfilling its educational mission. You are the ones who will testify to the quality of the education you have received at AeU. And I believe, it is not just a matter of knowledge or ability to use your newly-acquired knowledge at your workplace. It is also about having good work ethics, being dependable, proactive and adaptable. What AeU’s graduates should be known for is also a people who have integrity and honour, who can excel as individuals and yet work well with others, who are passionate learners and willing teachers and mentors.

I hope that you will continue to be engaged with us, connected with your fellow graduates and be a help to our students; be proud of your qualification and fly the AeU flag well wherever you are practising, and make a positive impact on the community you are in.

Conclusion

Graduands, today’s convocation ceremony closes a chapter of your lives but opens up another, with new and promising opportunities. How successful you will be depends on you. The focus, drive and determination you have exhibited while studying are the same ingredients for your success in your next phase of life. I urge you to continue learning, now that you have cultivated the habit of doing so, and keep your relationship with AeU. The vision of AeU is “To be a leader and a premier educational hub in the promotion of affordable and quality e-learning in Asia”. Established as an initiative of Malaysia, Asia e University (AeU) is a collaborative multinational university instituted under the auspice of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD). AeU is at present supported by thirty three (33) ACD member countries throughout the world.

The 33 participating ACD member countries leverage on AeU’s e-education platform to increase higher education accessibility for all and narrow the digital divide. Through our shared collective expertise and strategic linkages with our numerous educational partners, AeU delivers programmes that are imbued with the goals of flexibility, quality and relevance to provide a truly personalised learning experience for everybody today.

UNIVERSITY

BACkGROUND


The Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) is an organisation which has brought together governments from thirty three (33) Asian countries since its establishment in 2002. The organisation aims to foster Asian cooperation at the continental level, and integrate several regional cooperation organisations. Such are: the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN); the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and; the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Being an international university, AeU is leveraging on Thrust 5 of the National Higher Education Strategic Plan of Malaysia (2008) through collaborative networking by engaging international teaching staff and advocating for student mobility via the Asian Credit Transfer System (ACTS).


UNIVERSITY

PROFILEAeU is a private tertiary education institution incorporated under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996. Established in 2007, AeU has grown to become one of a leading provider of open and distance learning (ODL) in Asia. As an ODL institution, AeU’s focus is to provide accessible and affordable higher education for all. The University was brought into existence for a new approach to tertiary education that gives rise to greater flexibility in learning. The philosophy is based on the belief that quality education should be made available and accessible to all people regardless of demographics.

In just seven swift years, AeU has established a remarkable reputation as the acclaimed institution of choice which provides knowledge acquisition for human capital needs in the region through e-education.

The University has been acclaimed with top honours and awards. Such are; as the winner of BrandLaureate Awards 2010 for “Best Brand in Education - e-Education,” and the winner of the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2010 under the “Most Promising Entrepreneur” category. Additionally in 2012, the University was announced as the best ACD Project during the ACD Meeting in Kuwait.

AeU currently offers more than forty (40) academic programmes at all levels, ranging from Diplomas to PhDs through five (5) academic schools; the School of Management, School of Education & Cognitive Sciences, School of Information & Communications Technology, School of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences and School of Graduate Studies. All academic programmes are internationally benchmarked, approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). In addition AeU academic programmes are also recognised by several ACD member and non-ACD countries. The University also offers more than two hundred (200) executive and professional programmes through the School of Professional & Executive Education and School of Technical Education, Engineering & Re-skilling.

Since opening its doors in April 2007, AeU today has an enrolment of more than 16,000 students, and has graduated over 5,000 graduates. By delivering a world-class learning experience, AeU aspires to be the leader and the premiere educational hub in promotion of affordable quality e-learning throughout Asia.

AeU is involved in the Ministry of Education’s teacher upgrading programme (Program Pensiswazahan Guru) since March 2011. This particular programme is to assist the Ministry of Education in their drive to enhance the qualifications of local teachers in the country. More than 3,000 in-service teachers have enrolled in various fields of the Bachelor of Education programmes.

AeU is one of the first few institutions in Malaysia to implement an Open Entry System. This system awards entry to individuals who wish to pursue tertiary education even with minimal formal credentials. This is done by assessing their prior learning acquired through formal and informal training, as well as work experiences that can compensate for the lack of basic paper qualifications. Almost 20 percent of AeU’s enrolment is made up of students who applied through open entry.


AeU is a private university incorporated under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 (Act 555). Programmes offered at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels are internationally benchmarked and approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). In addition, AeU academic programmes are also recognised by several ACD and non-ACD countries.

Learner Service CentreThe Learner Service Centre is a one-stop centre which attends to enquiries and provides various support services for our learners.

Knowledge CentreThe AeU’s Knowledge Centre is one of the most comprehensive online libraries in the country. It has close to 7,000 titles of printed books and subscribes to over 100,000 e-books, 71,000 e-journals, and 1.6 million e-theses titles. The Knowledge Centre adopts an important role in supporting teaching, learning and research activities within AeU’s learning communities.


Learning Management SystemThe AeU’s Learning Management System known as Personalised Learning Space (myPLS), allows learners and academic facilitators to communicate, share information, access course materials and e-content, and keep them in the loop on academic matters and developments taking place within the university.

The meeting proposed a list of recommendations in the areas of policy, technology, human capacity building and knowledge sharing, which included the setting-up of an ACD Consultative e-Education Committee and a regional centre to coordinate e-Learning initiatives in the region.

11 March 2005Post-ACD e-Education Workshop, Malaysia

This meeting chaired by the Director General of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Malaysia unanimously agreed that Malaysia should table a proposal to the Islamabad ACD Ministerial meeting on the establishment of AeU.

6 April 20054th ACD Ministerial Meeting, Pakistan

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the 26 member countries then accepted the proposal on the formation of AeU and reaffirmed their countries’ commitment with the following declaration:

AeU was registered with the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia to establish the University on 18 April 2007.

5 - 6 June 20076th ACD Ministerial Meeting, Republic of South korea

Representatives of 30 ACD governments unanimously accepted Malaysia’s proposal on the establishment and implementation of AeU and this was reflected in the Seoul IT ACD Declaration 4:

Declaration No. 4:Support joint IT study and research projects among member countries while encouraging strong partnership in IT field both at the government and private levels; in which the Asia e University platform could be effectively utilized to promote and facilitate such initiatives.

23 - 24 May 20065th ACD Ministerial Meeting, Qatar

Representatives of the 28 ACD governments unanimously accepted Malaysia’s proposal to implement the proposed AeU. This was reflected in the Doha ACD Declaration 1.5:

Declaration No. 1.5:We agree to support the successful implementation of Asia e University as an instrument for human capacity building, closing the digital divide, increasing higher education accessibility, and spearheading e-Education efforts for the benefit of all member countries.

The meeting was held between participating member countries to propose areas of collaboration on policy and regulatory issues, issues of intellectual property rights, the development of an Asian international curriculum and the European Credit Transfer System (ETCS) for the development of an Asian Credit Transfer System (ACTS).

The first graduation of a batch of 45 students for the Executive Diploma in Mosque Management Programme conducted by the School of Professional and Executive Education (SPEED) and the Islamic Religious Department of Perak (Jabatan Agama Islam Perak, JAIP) took place in Ipoh, Perak. They were conferred the Executive Diploma in Mosque Management by Raja Muda Perak DYTM Raja Nazrin Shah Ibni Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah.

14 October 20098th ACD Ministerial Meeting, Colombo, Sri Lanka

The Ministers of Foreign Affairs and other Heads of Delegation from 30 member countries of the Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) acknowledge the following:

The Government of Malaysia reaffirms its commitment as the Prime Mover of e-Education in ensuring the success and sustainability of Asia e University. Malaysia expresses her appreciation of the support of member countries to AeU and particularly in agreeing to voluntarily explore the ways and means for the establishment of the Asia Credit Transfer System (ACTS).

The Government of Malaysia would also like to put on record that the Republic of India, through the Distance Education Council has in true spirit and letter of the ACD charter has agreed to recognise Asia e University. This is a milestone and will definitely lead to greater collaboration between Asia e University and the Institutions of Higher Learning in India to not only narrow the digital divide but also to bring internationally recognised education and training programmes to the peoples of Asia.

25 October 2010Awarded the MSC Malaysia Status

The Government of Malaysia awarded Asia e University the MSC Malaysia status for Institutions of Higher Learning to Asia E Learning Sdn Bhd for having fulfilled the necessary set of criteria in meeting the objectives of the MSC Malaysia. MSC Malaysia status entitles AeU to the incentives, rights and privileges provided for in the package of selected incentive, to continued adherence to the aforementioned criteria and the specific conditions attached to the Award.

25 October 2010Selected as ‘the gateway university’

AeU was selected as ‘the gateway university’ for international education for distance and online learning, with a projected GNI of RM100 million, by the Ministry of Higher Education under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).

The Malaysia Education Online (MEdO) portal was launched in conjunction with the Dasar e-Pembelajaran Negara (DePAN), by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, at the Pan Pacific KLIA. This portal is an initiative proposed by PEMANDU under the Malaysian Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) to bring Malaysian education online to the global market.

The university convocation represents the highlight of the university year. It is a celebrated event when the university publicly recognizes and rewards the achievements of the students. The yearly university community ceremony is conducted with a full university tradition and rituals. Among the paraphernalia displayed are: the mace, the chair and the various regalia of the different designations and degrees conferred.

UNIVERSITY TRADITIONS


THE

MACEThe ceremonial mace, carried at the head of the procession, symbolises both the status and standing of AeU as an institution vested with the honour and responsibility of imparting knowledge to its students. The mace bears various intricate representations reflecting part of the history, values and role of the University.

The mace is made of silver and chromed with gold that symbolises the University’s governing authority and is used only at official ceremonies where the Head is present to signify the seriousness and depth of the ceremony. This mace has five main representative parts to it:

The globe at the head of the mace is reflective of the global out reach of the university in all respects – in the nature of the knowledge it imparts, the personnel it employs as well as the students it welcomes.

Below the globe, the pentagon that holds it, stands for the University’s five key values which are Empowerment, Excellence, Integrity, Creativity and Professionalism.

The ascending steps below the pentagon mirror the adventurous path that students have to traverse in their pursuit of success. The wider circumference as the steps ascend indicates that higher goals are not easy to achieve but as one soldiers on, both the knowledge and rewards grow.

Against a backdrop of a modern motive, the longest part of the mace is embellished with seven parts and seven stripes to reflect the university’s seven E’s of learning namely Empowered, Enhanced, Exploratory, Expanding, Effective, Electronic and Experiential learning.

The motif that dominates the central focus of the mace is derived from the basic triangle, with the peak representing the highest goal. The abstract and non-linear shaped motive is all encompassing in its universal acceptance of the people it welcomes as well as the education approach it employs.



The stature and distinction placed on the chair is paralleled with the seat of honour of the highest ranking official of the university during the convocation ceremony.

At its head is the logo of AeU crafted in silver. The colour of the chair is combined with the red colour of AeU logo, adding to its impressive status. The chair is made of Cengal wood, a species of hard wood from Malaysia. The intricate carvings on the chair are similar to the motifs on the mace.

THE CEREMONIAL

CHAIR The same motif that is the central focus of the design on the mace is repeated on the chair. The central triangular shape with the focus at the peak symbolises the highest point as the goal. The modern motif depicted by the non-linear shape symbolises universal concepts. Finally the candle like shape symbolises the basic aim of an educational institution which is to enlighten students and guide them with knowledge.



Academic gowns or robes have been a major part of the formal attire at Convocation ceremonies. It has a long colourful history origination from the Middle Ages. While maintaining a certain degree of tradition; convocation robes may incorporate specific details defined by the university. It holds a status and defines the wearer based on his or her standing amongst the officials of the university or the class and fraternity of the degree received.

At AeU, the ensemble consists of a gown with a separate hood which follows the colour of the School, and a bonnet or a mortarboard which represents light appearing around a distinguished person.

Chairman

The Chairman’s robe is of maroon damask detailed with black songket and 3 inch gold lapel braids in front. The edge of the shoulders is embellished with hand-embroidered gold work while two gold ornaments edged with a gold braid adorn the sleeves.

The bonnet is the headdress which is made of soft black velvet fabric with a gold tassel.



President

This is of black damask dressed-up with maroon songket and 3 inch gold lapel braids in front. Embellished again with hand-embroidered gold work on the shoulders, this gown is also adorned with gold ornaments around the sleeves with gold braid edging.

The bonnet is again made of soft black velvet fabric with a gold tassel.



Board of Directors

The robes are of maroon soft fabric with peach and yellow stripes at the front lapels and sleeves.

The bonnet is of soft black velvet fabric with a gold tassel.



Senate Members

They are identified by their dark purple robes and light pink soft fabric with yellow edging on the front lapel.

A bonnet of soft black velvet fabric with a gold tassel completes the ensemble.



Honorary Doctorate

Red soft fabric with blue on the sleeves and 3 gold stripes define the robes of this honorary degree. A bonnet of black velvet fabric with gold tassel is part of the attire.

The colour of the hood differs with the degree - Doctorate of Philosophy, Yellow and Doctorate of Education, Turquoise Green.



Doctor of Philosophy

Recipients of this prestigious degree are identified by their blue and red robes with red fabric on the sleeves. The arms opening at the middle of the sleeves bears three blue stripes.

The colour of the hood is blue with white lining.

It is complemented with a bonnet of black velvet with a gold tassel.



Doctor of Business Administration

Recipients of this prestigious degree are identified by their blue and red robes with red fabric on the sleeves. The arms opening at the middle of the sleeves bears three blue stripes.

The colour of the hood is purple with white lining.

It is complemented with a bonnet of black velvet with a gold tassel.



Master’s

Master’s graduates are classified by their blue robes with soft fabric in red. The sleeves are also red in colour with two blue stripes.

Their mortarboard is of black flannel wool with a black tassel.



Bachelor’s

The robes of the Bachelor’s degree recipients are made of soft fabrics which represent the corporate colours of AeU. The gowns are in blue while the sleeves are red in colour.

The mortarboard for the Bachelor’s attire is of black flannel wool with a black tassel. What differentiates each School is the colour of the hood.

AWARDkUMARESAN A/L MUTHUSAMYMaster of Business Administration

Kumaresan works full-time as a Head of Risk Management and Quality Assurance at Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad. He received his BSc. (Hons) in Economics from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in 1999. He has 14 years experience in the field of internal audit, compliance, enterprise risk management, assurance and governance.

It took him six (6) years of research to find the university that offers MBA with specialisation in Risk Management before he found AeU. With encouragement from his wife, two children and the circle of family members, he enrolled for the AeU MBA programme in August 2012.

He finds the AeU MBA curriculum that combines eastern and western perspectives with a special attention to Asian business perspectives, is highly relevant to his professional career and fits his ambition to be a competent Asian business leader.

Also, the flexibility he enjoyed during his study, allows minimal disruption to his family, work commitments and challenges faced in adjusting his time and roles as a professional, a husband and a father.

Kumaresan believes that the programme has definitely taken him to greater heights, both, professionally and personally. He likes the way the AeU MBA programme is run where it enables him to broaden his knowledge in all aspects of the corporate sector. The subjects offered are extremely useful in developing his knowledge and ability to lead others in his organisation.

His advise to prospective students is to invest in their future with the AeU MBA. He is confident that AeU MBA graduates will have an edge over others when they are equipped with the skills that they will need in an ever increasing competitive workplace. In addition to the academic rigour, the programme also gives opportunities for students to further develop their communication, leadership, interpersonal and networking skills.

AWARDCHOW CHOI CHIN Master of Education

Chow Choi Chin works full-time as an accountant at ALZAC VIVA Sdn Bhd. She received her BSc. (Hons) in Accountancy from University Malaya in 1996. She has been an accountant for 18 years focusing on strategic planning, costing, budgeting and credit administration.

Interestingly, her wish is to be an early childhood educator. With encouragement from her husband and three children, she enrolled for the Master of Education in 2010 at AeU, specializing in Early Childhood Education.

Her most challenging task at AeU was striking a balance between work, family and a life as a student. However, with the support of AeU’s staff and academic facilitators who were passionate in imparting knowledge, she continued to strife to complete her degree. She also attributes her success to the unwavering support of her family and fellow classmates.

The e-learning paradigm adopted at AeU made available all learning materials and online databases needed for completion of assignments, preparation for examinations and the research project. She had access to materials anytime and anywhere at her own convenience making her journey at AeU even more pleasant.

Chow feels that that the Master of Education degree has given her confidence to be an effective educator and perhaps venture into a different career path. She aims to apply the ideas and principles learnt in the programme as an early childhood educator.

AWARDNAINA BINTI ABDUL kARIMMaster of Education

Naina has been a lecturer at the School of Allied Health Science, Nilai University since 2008 in critical care nursing and community development. She received her Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Human Development from Universiti Putra Malaysia in 2004 and enrolled at AeU to pursue the Master of Education (M.Ed) programme in January, 2011.

Like many adult learners, she had the mammoth task of having to manage her time between family, work and studying at AeU. However, with the support of staff and academic facilitators who challenged her to think and reflect on her role as an educator enouraged her to push on. Support of her family played a significant role in completing the programme as a part-time student.

Also, the flexibility of the programme enabled her to schedule her time in meeting deadlines, reading the learning materials and discussing online. The learning materials were intresting, friendly and easy to understand which made her learning easier.

Completing the programme has enhanced her confidence as a health educator. She seeks to improve the teaching-learning experience of students at her university by applying the principles and concepts gleaned from various courses. Her advise to prospective students is to prioritise and manage their time effectively as going back to school is a serious commitment. She plans to continue with her doctrate in education.

AWARDRATHI AMBIGAI A/P kANAPATIBachelor of Education (TESL) (Hons)

Rathi Ambigai is a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan, Seksyen 2, Bandar Kinrara, Puchong. She completed her STPM from Sekolah Menengah Raja Kelsom, Kuala Kangsar and later obtained a diploma from the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), Batu Pahat to purse a diploma.

She has been teaching English to young children for 18 years and loves what she is doing. She has made a concerted effort to keep up with best practices in teaching English as a second language and believes that learners should be given individualised instruction to succeed.

With the encouragement of her husband and two children, she registered with AeU to pursue the Bachelor Education (TESL) in March, 2011. Her journey as an adult learner has been most challenging having to juggle between work, family and studying. She found the support accorded to her by various academic facilitators and staff at AeU has inspired her to push forward.

She finds the e-learning pedagogy adopted by AeU as convenient giving her the flexibility in accessing learning materials, discussing online whenever and wherever. Her experience at AeU has broadened her perspective of teaching English as a second language and provided insights into how children learn.

It had been a long and arduous journey for Rathi, but certainly a very rewarding experience. She owes her success to the constant support of her husband, children and her classmates whom she enjoyed interacting with and treasures their friendship. She believes in hard work and intends to purse a postgraduate qualification.

AWARDWAN NOR ABIDAH BINTI IBRAHIMBachelor of Education (TESL) (Hons)

Wan Nor Abidah is a teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan Janglu, Kuala Ramping, Pahang. She completed her secondary school at MRSM Taiping, Perak and obtained a diploma in teaching from the Institute of Teacher Education. She has been teaching English in primary school for more than 15 years and believes that there is always something new to learn in education. With the support and encouragement of her husband and children, she continued her studies and enrolled for the Bachelor of Education (TESL) at AeU in March, 2011.

As an adult learner, having to manage family, work and studying was not an easy task. It is certainly admirable of Adibah to return to school after all these years. She owes her success to the support of AeU staff, encouragement from academic facilitators and the pleasant moments she shared with her classmates.

The flexible mode of learning adopted at AeU allowed access to learning materials, web resources and online discussion anytime, anwhere adapted well to Adibah with her hectic schedule. The various courses offered encouraged her to think critically about her teaching and how the new ideas learned may be creatively applied in teaching English to young learners.

The road towards getting a degree was tough with many twists and turns but Adibah believes that as long as one has passion the hurdles are urmountable and the journey can be pleasant. Her family was most supportive during her sojourn at AeU and hopes that her children will follow in her footsteps. Her advice is to grab every opportunity to learn and hopes to continue in doing a master’s of education.

Bartholomew Michael

Thesis Title: The use of an integrated grammar-genre-based writing approach to teach business writing skills

Brief Citation:

The pedagogical research shows that teachers can teach effectively only when they have, among others, the right approach and a module with a specific methodology to teach the subject matter. A right approach and a module with a specific methodology can pave the way for the teacher to create an effective teaching scheme, materials, lesson plan and assessment method. This research also shows that both teachers and students become highly motivated as it makes both the teaching and learning process interesting and highly target-oriented.

Bartholomew Michael is a writing researcher, teacher trainer, lecturer in Business English, author and an ex-journalist. He attributes his successful completion of the tough and often exhaustive PhD research programme to his wife’s loving support and his supervisor’s clear cut dedication.

Cheng Chuen Sheila

Thesis Title: An investigation of the cognitive processes in solving operational research problems among selected business degree undergraduates in Malaysia

Brief Citation:

This study explored the cognitive processes and pathways used by Malaysian undergraduate business degree students (UBD) in solving well-structured (WS) and ill-structured (IS) OR problems. The findings from this study reveal that the performance on the WS-OR problem was different from, and independent of, the IS-OR problems. Pathways to solving WS-OR and IS-OR problems influenced the individual’s decision-making outcomes. Emanating from these findings, a (6+1)-Rs problem solving heuristic model has been proposed to ameliorate the cognitive processes of students in solving OR problems and the quality of decision making.

Sheila Cheng is a senior lecturer in the School of Management, AeU. The PhD has made her see things in this world in a critical but factual ways.



David Richard Namwandi

Thesis Title: Implementation of the Southern African Development Community protocol on education and training and its impact on economic development : A case study of Namibia and Zimbabwe

Brief Citation:

The study has analysed the nature of the challenges preventing the effective implementation of SADC-PET. It has also assessed and evaluated the effectiveness of SADC-PET using Namibia and Zimbabwe as case studies. The findings reveal that despite SADC-PET clear goals of developing a comparable and harmonised education and training policies in all SADC countries, this is far from being achieved because each country is still implementing its own national policies.

The study has formulated appropriate recommendations to ensure the operationalisation of SADC-PET; and sensitise and influence interested researchers to advance these findings through further research on the remaining 13 countries. He is currently Minister of Education, Namibia and a Central Committee member of SWAPO Party, the ruling party in Namibia.

David Namwandi is a founder of the first private University in Namibia - 1994, with a current student population of 8,500 and with five satellite campuses around the country. David Namwandi is convinced that the PhD has enhanced his capacity and knowledge of the region and beyond.

Fung Han Ping

Thesis Title: Team related factors influencing project performance as perceived by project managers in Malaysia

Brief Citation:

This research aims to help project managers to improve their project performance by acting on some team related factors which include their leadership roles, team building & participation, team shared mental models, team trust as well as team satisfaction. These factors are empirically tested to impact project performance significantly if they are acted upon by project managers.

Fung Han Ping is working as an Enterprise Architect in Hewlett-Packard Technology Consulting and managed a series of projects in his earlier career. This PhD moulded him to become a more matured researcher in conducting social science research for knowledge contribution.



Hanan Assad Ahmed khatib

Thesis Title: The Impact of human resource management practices on the performance of Bahrain Educational Institutes

Brief Citation:

This study attempts to understand how the Educational Institutes in the Kingdom of Bahrain can improve the performance of their employees to better achieve targeted institutional goals and objectives. It is based on a questionnaire-interview research that investigates the relationships between a set of 5-Axis variables and the impact of Human Resource Management Practices (HRMP) and Human Resource Management Audit (HRMA) on the said Educational Institutes. In conclusion, this study recommends that future research in evaluating the relationship between HRMA and HRMP dimensions should cover more HR-solution measurable variables than the intervening variables in this 5-Axis proposition.

Hanan Assad is currently the principal of Ittihad Schools in Jordan. Previously, she was in Bahrain over 17 years of experience as a HR Manger, Administration and Finance Manager, Principal and as a part time Lecturer.

Hanan Assad strongly believes that the findings of her PhD work have helped the Educational Institutes in the Kingdom of Bahrain to improve the performance of their employees to better achieve targeted institutional goals and objectives.

kan Yoke Yue

Thesis Title: A study of the stock market dynamics in Malaysia 1990-2013

Brief Citation:

This dissertation explores the empirical influence of domestic and foreign factors on equity pricing in Malaysia for the period 1990-2013. The findings indicate that share prices and four key variables (inflation rate, industrial production, money supply and US share price) are cointegrated in the long run. However, Malaysia share prices are not significantly affected by lagged information from macroeconomic variables in the short run.

Kan Yoke Yue serves as the Deputy Dean of Faculty of Business and Management, Southern University College in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. To her, PhD is the Pursuit of knowledge with Hard work and Dedication. The completion of a PhD is not the end of a journey but rather the start of a new life, as she can engage her future academic works in a critical and intellectual way.



Lok Lay Hong

Thesis Title: Teaching, learning and performing approaches for classical guitar and piano: a case study at an institute of higher learning in Malaysia

Brief Citation:

This study draws meaning through contextual and structural relations that define tri-partite hierarchical framework and correlations in music teaching, learning and performing. The arbitrary hurdles of non-literate and literate approaches had been identified in this case study which had recognised the unique variety of discourses and domains in tertiary music learning.

Lok Lay Hong is the Head of the Department of Music at the Malaysian Institute of Art. She strongly believes that the desiderata on creative music learning are predicated upon musical practices in order to address the needs of tertiary music students.

Manimekalai A/P Jambulingam

Thesis Title: Determinants that influence adoption of mobile technology in learning environment

Brief Citation:

The aim of this research is to investigate the salient factors that influence the behavioural intention in the adoption of mobile technology in learning environment. This study confirmed that podcasting is an attractive mobile medium for many contemporary students. It may be useful for universities to incorporate podcasting in their website to enhance student’s performance.

Manimekalai Jambulingam is a senior lecturer in Taylor’s University, Malaysia. She strongly believes that the PhD Degree has made her to think critically and intellectually. She is also curious to explore her own boundaries and abilities and to get off the beaten path and “work her way through the woods”.



Nguyen Trung Thang

Thesis Title: Valuation of intangibles – a case of private firms in Vietnam

Brief Citation:

The main aim of this study is to gain insights of how intangibles are valued during the equity transaction of private firms in the context of emerging markets like Vietnam. The research found that private equity investors recognize intangibles as the value determinants of firms, but they do not value intangibles independently. The final (negotiated) price of intangibles is significantly influenced by the transaction context - the main one being economic outlook, competition amongst buyers, negotiation skills of business owners and motivation of the buyer and seller.

Nguyen Trung Thang has served as a lecturer, consultant of business management and the President of Vietnam Marketing & Management Institute. He believes that the PhD is a good start of his further research and academic journey.

Pradeep kumar A/L Achyuthan Nair

Thesis Title: Recruitment and retention of academic staff in selected Malaysian private universities

Brief Citation:

The thesis examines the structure of academic employment in private universities and the challenges faced in recruitment and retention of academic staff. The study reveals that recruiting and retaining quality academic staff, particularly at doctoral level and in the fields of science, technology, and other specialized areas are a major challenge for private universities. A model for effective recruitment and retention was developed, supported by a set of strategies to assist the leadership of private universities to attract and retain academic talents and compete effectively.

Pradeep Nair is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Taylor’s University, Malaysia. He believes that a PhD degree is an intellectual journey into the unknown, peppered with challenges, but amazingly rewarding to the mind and soul.



Shamala A/P Ramasamy

Thesis Title: Informal reasoning fallacy and critical thinking disposition among Malaysian undergraduates

Brief Citation:

The study reveals that a moderate performance was shown by undergraduates in critical thinking. A newly developed instrument termed as informal reasoning fallacy test shows that fallacy detection and critical thinking disposition work conjointly. In addition, Malaysian undergraduates are not disadvantaged by their background factors in their ability to detect fallacies and to be disposed to think critically.

Shamala Ramasamy is a senior lecturer and Head of Research and Scholarly Activities at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts, UCSI University, Malaysia. She has been in the field of education for the past 16 years. Ironically, she loves the lonely journey in her travel to reach her destination. Despite her illness, she managed to strive through to obtain her PhD.

Syed Hamid Bin Syed Jaafar Albar

Thesis Title: National interest in the foreign policy of Malaysia : The Mahathir era (1981 - 2003)

Brief Citation:

This study aims to show that the Foreign Policy of Malaysia in the Mahathir Era 1981 - 2003 was determined by National Interest in the realms of politics, economics, security and society’s interests and imperatives.

This is demonstrated through foreign policy postures, initiatives and outcomes that had consensus, relevance and acceptance to allow Malaysia to play a leadership role amongst the South-South countries, Islamic Ummah and East Asia (including Asean). The research indicates that domestic factors influenced the Foreign Policy of Malaysia. Idiosyncrasy and iconoclasm is not a significant factor, as there was change and continuity.

Syed Hamid Albar is currently Chairman of Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat (SPAD), Special Envoy of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and a Council Member of the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council (APRC). He strongly believes that the PhD Degree gives him a better intellectual insight of the subject to appreciate its academic perspective. It is an achievement that was never expected at the age of 70.

The main aim of this study is to gain insights of how Kuching city consumers are responded towards modern retailers despite of the continuous existence of the traditional retailers in the context of developing and emerging retailing industries in Kuching city. The findings discovered that products, prices, promotions, store atmosphere, locations, and services have significant impact on shopping choice of both modern and traditional retail formats. The most important variables are services and store atmosphere that influence city customers to shop at modern retailers.

Thesis Title: Brand advocacy and re-purchase intentions of Malaysian automotive owners

Brief Citation:

The aim of this study is to gain insights of how the Malaysian automobile owners are influenced by loyalty and repurchase intentions pertaining to their future automobile purchase decisions in the context of the Malaysian automotive industry. The findings indicated that perceived equity and quality significantly influenced buyer satisfaction and commitment which then significantly influenced advocacy and repurchase intention of the automobile buyers in Malaysia.

Pursuing the DBA qualification had been Simon’s life-long dream. Simon just retired as a Banker. He is currently an educational consultant and a full-time stock and shares consultant. Simon’s DBA has been very useful to make him a creative and critical thinker in his future undertakings.
