CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU Cast & Crew Sightings The Alluvian Happy Hour - 318 Howard Street: This Thursday night mainstay with live music and specialty cocktails was popular with actors and crew. Giardina’s - 314 Howard Street: Adjacent to The Alluvian Hotel, Giardina’s has been providing fine dining with a Delta-casual atmosphere since 1936. Giardina’s features steaks, seafood, and Italian cuisine in private booths and a dining area. Delta Bistro - 117 Main Street: Chef Taylor Bowen Ricketts’ eclectic Delta cuisine made regulars out of producer Chris Columbus, director Tate Taylor, The Help author Kathryn Stockett, pro- ducer Brunson Green, and actors Ahna O’Reilly, Octavia Spencer, and Leslie Jordan. Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen were also spotted here. Crystal Grill - 423 Carrollton Avenue Corner of Lamar Street: They are world-famous for their mile-high meringue, veal cutlets, and largest menu selection around. If you want to understand how a pie so delicious and coveted could be the cornerstone of a Junior League auction, try any of the made-fresh-daily ones for yourself. Cat Cora recommends the Lemon Ice Box pie, featured on the Food Network’s “The Best Thing I Ever Ate.” Lusco’s - 722 Carrollton Avenue: Delta heritage made this restaurant popular with cast and crew. Having been around since the 1920s, this step back in time began as a market where Mrs. Lusco sold spaghetti. Mr. Lusco built dining rooms with curtains so customers could imbibe during prohibition times. The decor has changed very little, and today Lusco’s is widely known for their steaks, onion rings, and pompano. Webster’s - 216 West Claiborne Avenue: A gem of a restaurant since 1975, Webster’s is perfect for casual dining and made a great kick-off party spot for the cast and crew and for hanging out after filming. Serio’s - 506 Yalobusha Street: Formerly Yianni’s, their outdoor patio was a popular gathering spot of the extras and crew. Serio’s serves their family’s Sicilian specialties including various pastas, pizzas, salads and sandwiches. Tallahatchie Tavern - Money Road: This refurbished commissary on the grounds of Tallahatchie Flats was a cast and crew favorite, even to celebrate the last day of shooting. TurnRow Café - 304 Howard Street: Upstairs at TurnRow Books is a cafe that became an almost-daily hangout for the directors and producers. Kenny’s now- famous gazpacho, a vegan’s seasonal delight, is made with all local ingredients and became a favorite of Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard. Signed copies of The Help are sometimes to be found downstairs in the bookstore. Front Street/Cotton Row: On the banks of the Yazoo River, cast and crew said goodbye to the many friends they had made at the wrap party. A blues band played as fireworks went off over the river, giving them an emotional Delta sendoff. Where the Stars Stayed Alluvian Spa - 325 Howard Street: Cast and crew members took advantage of some rare downtime relaxing at The Alluvian Spa, including Delta-centric treatments such as Sweet Tea pedicures, Sweet Magnolia facials, and Three Rivers body scrubs. The Alluvian - 318 Howard Street: The Alluvian boasts 45 luxurious rooms and five spacious suites. The building originally opened as the Hotel Irving in 1917 and closed in the 1980s. In 2003, after an amazing transformation, The Alluvian Hotel was opened for business. Accolades include listings on Conde Nast Traveler’s Gold List, Conde Nast Traveler’s Best Hotels in the World, and holder of the AAA Four Diamond Award. Bellashon - 805 Poplar Street & Park Avenue: This glorious home known as “Bellashon” was rented by producer and Mississippi native Brunson Green. 101 East President: Tate Taylor, the movie’s director, rented this Colonial Revival home, which is the only home on Grand Boulevard that faces another street. One of the first homes on the Boulevard, it predates the development of the boulevard-facing homes and is known for its Ionic columns and finely detailed geometric patterns in the dormer windows. Bellehaven - 411 Crockett Street: Emma Stone arrived in Greenwood to play Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan, and chose to stay at the lovely Bellehaven home on Crockett. Bellehaven, a piece of Southern history, was built in 1902 and renovated in the 1970s. On May 13, 2010, DreamWorks Studios formally announced that a motion picture based on Mississippi native Kathryn Stockett’s bestselling novel The Help would be filmed in Greenwood and surrounding areas. We became home for several months to cast members such as Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Mike Vogel, Allison Janney, Sissy Spacek, Jessica Chastain, Ahna O’Reilly, Cicely Tyson, Dana Ivey, Chris Lowell, Aunjanue Ellis, Leslie Jordan, Mary Steenbergen, and many more. Enjoy this tour of a special place that became home to The Help. Skeeter (Emma Stone) runs to a favorite spot outdoors, a small bench under a tree, and remembers how Constantine comforted her when she wasn’t asked to a dance. Skeeter’s home is actually Whittington Plantation on Money Road, just outside of town. Find where Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) offers the “special pie” to Hilly Holbrook (Bryce Dallas Howard) at the Johnson Residence on Grand Boulevard. Minny improves Celia Foote’s (Jessica Chastain) poor cooking skills by teaching her how to make fried chicken on her first day. These scenes were filmed at the Cotesworth home, located in Carroll County. The Help in Greenwood A star-studded tour through the filming of “The Help” during summer and fall 2010.
