n Nov. 4, 2014, the Government of Saskatchewan launched a public consultation process regarding the future of liquor retailing. The consultation website, www.saskatchewan.ca/liquorretail,

included background information, a snapshot of liquor retailing in other jurisdictions as well as a short survey. At the completion of the survey, respondents were invited to submit any other comments they wanted to make.

The consultation wrapped up Jan. 30, 2015. A total of 7,618 people visited the consultation website, with 6,604 of those visitors completing the survey. More than 3,000 people also took the opportunity to submit personal comments.

In addition to opinions received through the consultation website, government received feedback via ‘form’ letters in support of the current liquor retail system.

Key stakeholders were also invited to present their views to government. Some groups, such as The Saskatchewan Hotel & Hospitality Association, held

face-to-face meetings with the Minister Responsible for SLGA, Hon. Don McMorris, while others submitted written comments, or both.

Excellence in human resources in the tourism sector leads to memorable visitor experiences,” Jeremy Harrison, Minister for Tourism Saskatchewan said. “This year’s Employers of Choice designation recipients help grow our strong tourism sector by attracting and retaining the best and brightest who deliver the exceptional, warm, friendly, guest experiences that our province is known for.”

“Tourism Saskatchewan is proud to stand alongside 24 Saskatchewan businesses that recognize the value of investing in staff and creating a safe, healthy and encouraging work environment. The growth in the number of Employers of Choice is impressive, but equally inspiring is the fact that the program has expanded to a dozen Saskatchewan communities. This reflects leadership among our sector in communities large and small, urban and rural,” Mary Taylor-Ash, Tourism Saskatchewan CEO, said.

The tourism Employer of Choice initiative, the first of its kind in Saskatchewan and now in its fifth year, is designed to help tourism businesses attract and retain staff. The program encourages employers to engage in best practices, increase staff training, improve human resources practices and become leaders in the tourism sector.

Organizations have up to seven months to complete a

comprehensive questionnaire that covers seven functional

areas of human resources (staffing; learning, training

and development; compensation; employee and labour

relations; professional practice; organizational effectiveness;

and occupational health and safety), as well as a survey

completed by at least 25 per cent of frontline and managerial

staff. Applicants receive a detailed report outlining their

organization’s strengths and potential.

Registrations are accepted from May 1 until November 30

each year, with successful applicants announced the following

spring.

program or steceoc.com.

The 2015 Employers of Choice will be honoured at

t is with great sadness that The Saskatchewan Hotel & Hospitality Association Board of Directors announces the passing of Norman Kish. Leaving the board after 10 years of service, Norm continued to work with the association analyzing and interpreting data and pursuing his other passion, golf, where Norm also served as the President of Murray Golf Course Men’s Club.

Norm will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to meet, know or work with him. He is survived by his wife Charlene, son Joel (Kristen), daughters Nicole and Brittany and grandchildren Drew and Annabelle. ■

Craven Motor InnThe Craven Motor Inn in Craven, SK is nestled in the scenic Qu’appelle Valley along Highway 20. It is a favourite spot for local residents to have a drink, an appetizer or two, and enjoy great company.

“I think we picked a good hotel. The area is growing, there is a lot new housing on this side of the lake and along Saskatchewan Beach and Kanata Valley. We get a lot of people stopping in,” said Wayne McKay.

He and his wife Carolyn bought the hotel in 2002 but first became involved in the hotel/bar industry in 1992 when they invested with partners in a bar at Regina Beach. In 1996, they bought the hotel in Punnichy, SK, and then the Craven Motor Inn in 2002. They ran two hotels for five years, then sold the hotel in Punnichy in 2007 to focus on their business in Craven.

The Craven Motor Inn is a tavern, and patrons must be of legal drinking age to visit the establishment. Along with alcoholic beverages, appetizers and fried foods are available. The hotel’s steak pit is open Thursday through Saturday and is a popular choice for groups looking for fund-raising events.

The business also has six rooms and living quarters that are rented out. All the rooms have been redecorated and modernized. Three have private bathrooms while the other three share a community bathroom. Workers in construction, mining, and other industry are steady renters of the rooms and living quarters.

While the Craven Motor Inn is in close proximity to the hustle and bustle of the annual music festival that takes place just across the highway, the town of Craven itself remains a place for quiet relaxation.

“The festival used to give us more business years ago, but I think it’s more self-confined now,” said McKay.

A member of the Saskatchewan Hotels and Hospitality Association, McKay finds the association to be a valuable ally for smaller business owners like themselves especially when negotiating with government about business concerns. “They are quite pro-business, and they’ve been good to us. We have cheaper pricing for our beer supply and those kinds of things by being part of the group,” he noted. “There are a couple of things I’d like them to finish up on, hopefully that will come.”

SHHA Member Profile: Gary Hoffert and Canalta Hotels

he biggest awards show of the year – the Oscars – may be over, but the Canalta Hotels team has still got its eyes on some potential trophies of its own.

Canalta is up for two Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence: Business of the Year Award (Over 20 Full-Time Employees) and Tourism Employer of the Year Award. The award finalists were announced on March 2 and the winners will be announced during the 26th annual Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence Gala, April 16, at the Radisson Hotel Saskatoon.

“It really shows that we value our team members and our customers. We’re very excited to be nominated and reach the finals,” said Canalta Regional Vice-President Gary Hoffert.

“Our team members are the most important piece of the puzzle. If we take care of them and treat them right we find that they’re fully engaged and wanting to reach the same goals we want to reach.”

Lately, Canalta is no stranger to awards. In February of 2015, nine of its Saskatchewan hotels received the Employer of Choice designation from Tourism Saskatchewan. The awards highlighted 24 Saskatchewan businesses that recognize the value of investing in staff and creating a safe, healthy and encouraging work environment.

As Hoffert explained, the reason for this success is that Canalta is a family owned and operated business that has put an emphasis on its team and the communities they do business in

“We are a hotel development company and an operations company. We’re in it for the long run,” he said. “We move into some real vibrant communities and work with the communities to become a partner. We’re not just there to build a hotel and then flip it or to be a drain on the community. We look at ourselves as a partner in the community to attract business so everyone prospers. In everything we do, we try to partner with the community, to really becoming an integral part of that community.”

Canalta began 30 years ago when Cam Christianson – the youngest person ever, at that time, to receive his real estate license in Alberta (at the age of 19) – and his wife Sharlene bought a hotel in Stettler, Alberta. The couple fell in love with the hotel business and later bought another hotel in Stettler. Eventually, the Christiansons were able to get the franchise rights for the Super 8 and Ramada brands and build a number of those hotels in Alberta. Gary Hoffet was brought on board in 2007 as the family wanted to expand into Saskatchewan. The company opened its first hotel in Saskatchewan – a Ramada – in Weyburn in 2008.

Canalta thought it was time to venture out with its own brand, and in 2009 opened up its first Canalta Hotel in Weyburn next to the Ramada. It has since expanded across the province now totalling 10 locations: Assiniboia, Esterhazy, Humboldt, Martensville, Melfort, Moosomin, Shaunavon and Tisdale.

True to their mantra, Canalta has built up a large customer base by being involved in the community. The hotel is a major sponsor of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and is also the title sponsor of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Canalta Cup. The hotel has also taken part in countless charity initiatives. For example, Hoffert notes all of the hotel’s team members will take part in the Red Cross Day of Pink and proudly wear the colours to stamp out bullying.

“Anything the communities are doing we want to be there and support,” Hoffert said.

From the beginning of their Saskatchewan expansion, Canalta also became members of the Saskatchewan Hotel & Hospitality Association (SHHA). Hoffert is currently vice-chairmen on the Board of Directors.

“Being members of SHHA speaks to our level of participation within the industry,” Hoffert said. “We need an organization like that. We need a voice. We need someone to bring all of the pieces together. It’s very important for us as an industry to support an organization that speaks for our industry as a whole.”

Another big factor in Canalta’s success is the appeal of the hotels. Hoffert says there’s a “shock factor” when their customers enter a location.

“They’re not used to seeing that high calibre of hotel,” he said. “Our buildings are structurally and aesthetically beautiful. The building is very use-friendly, as well. There are guest laundry facilities, a very high-end fitness centre, and a business centre. All of our locations have a hot tub and steam room and some have waterslides. Being a family-based business, we can adjust very quickly to our customers needs and wants”

Canalta Hotels is not done expanding. It just opened up its first Manitoba location in Selkirk and also has nine Canalta branded Alberta locations. The next Saskatchewan Canalta hotel, Hoffert said, will open in Kindersley in the fall of 2015. ■
