Techie Corner

By John Janes

Techie Questions from Members Do you have any specific questions about technology or something specific you would like to see covered in this column? Send your suggestions, questions, and comments to the club at [email protected]. We will try to address them in future issues.

Saw something on Google Search Tips and thought I would give you at least a few of them. These are the ones that caught my eye and I know would really help me. Have fun with them.

1. Use the tabs

The first tip is to use the tabs in Google search. On the top of every search are a number of tabs. Usually you’ll see Web, Image, News, and More. Using these tabs, you can help define what kind of search you need to do.

2. Use quotes

When searching for something specific, try using quotes to minimize the guesswork for Google search. When you put your search parameters in quotes, it tells the search engine to search for the whole phrase.

For instance, if you search for Puppy Dog Sweaters, the engine will search for content that contains those three words in any order.

However, if you search “Puppy Dog Sweaters”, it will search for that phrase exactly as you typed it.

3. Use a hyphen to exclude words

Sometimes you may find yourself searching for a word with an ambiguous meaning. An example is Mustang. When you Google search for Mustang, you may get results for both the car made by Ford or the horse. If you want to cut one out, use the hyphen to tell the engine to ignore content with one of the other. See the exam-ple below.

Mustang -cars

4. Use the asterisk wildcard

The asterisk wildcard is one of the most useful ones on the list. Here’s how it works.

When you use an asterisk in a search term on Google search, it will leave a placeholder that may be automat-ically filled by the search engine later. This is a brilliant way to find song lyrics if you don’t know all the words. Let’s look at the syntax:

“Come * right now * me”

5. Search for multiple words at once

Google search is flexible. It knows you may not find what you want by searching only a single word or phrase. Thus, it lets you search for multiples.

By using this trick, you can search for one word or phrase along with a second word or phrase. This can help narrow down your search to help you find exactly what you’re looking for. Here is the syntax:

“Best ways to prepare for a job interview” OR “How to prepare for a job interview”

Subject: THE NEXT CLASS REUNION

Every ten years, as summertime nears, An announcement arrives in the mail. A reunion is planned, it'll really be grand, Make plans to attend without fail. I'll never forget the first time we met We tried so hard to impress. We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars, And wore our most elegant dress. It was quite an affair; the whole class was there, It was held at a fancy hotel. We wined, and we dined, and we acted refined And everyone thought it was swell. The men all conversed about who had been first To achieve great fortune and fame. Meanwhile, their spouses described their fine houses And how beautiful their children became. The Homecoming queen, who once had been lean, Now weighed in at one-ninety-six. The jocks who were there had all lost there hair And the cheerleaders could no longer do kicks. No one had heard about the class nerd Who'd guided a spacecraft to the moon, Or poor little Jane, who's always been plain, She married a shipping tycoon. The boy we'd decreed "most apt to succeed" Was serving ten years in the pen. While the one voted "least" now was a priest. Just shows you can be wrong now and then.

They awarded a prize to one of the guys Who seemed to have aged the least. Another was given to the grad who had driven The farthest to attend the feast.

Subject: THE NEXT CLASS REUNION (Continued from page 16) They took a class picture, a curious mixture Of beehives, crew cuts and wide ties. Tall, short or skinny, the style was the Mini You never saw so many thighs. At our next get-together, no one cared whether They impressed their classmates or not. The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal, By this time we'd all gone to pot. It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores, We ate coleslaw, hamburgers and beans. Then most of us lay around in the shade, In our comfortable T-shirts and jeans. By the fortieth year, it was abundantly clear We were definitely over the hill. Those who weren't dead had to crawl out of bed And be home in time for their pill. And now I can't wait as they've set the date Our 60th is coming, I'm told. It should be a ball, they've rented a hall At the Shady Rest Home for the old. Repairs have been made on my old hearing aid My pacemaker's been turned up on high. My wheelchair is oiled, and my teeth have been boiled And I've bought a new wig and glass eye. I'm feeling quite hearty, I'm ready to party I'll dance until dawn's early light. It'll be lots of fun, and I hope at least one Other person can make it that night.

New Bag Policy (Beginning July 5)

The biggest change will take effect beginning with our game on Friday, July 5 vs. the Texas Rangers: A new, single-

compartment bag policy (i.e., tote bags). While still fan-friendly, our change to now prohibit backpacks and other multi-

zipper bags will significantly reduce time required for security staff to check each bag and, subsequently, time spent by

our fans in line. Specifically:

Permitted at All Gates

(Maximum size: 16” x 16” x 8”; those 9” x 5” or under qualify for no-bag “Express” lanes)

Purses

Clutch purse

Single-compartment tote bag

Clear bag

Drawstring bag

Diaper bag

Medically-necessary items Single-compartment, soft-sided cooler

Not Permitted

Backpack

Multi-compartment laptop bag

Duffel bag

Any bag larger than 16" x 16" x 8"

Hold Your Phone

Fans can now keep personal items (i.e. cell phone, keys, etc.) in their pockets while going through security at all Target

Field gates! Target Field magnetometers have been updated to recognize such common items, while still detecting fire-

arms and other larger metal objects. This magnetometer detection setting has been successfully implemented at other

professional sports facilities nationwide and meets Major League Baseball’s Best Stadium

Operating Procedures.

Please Consider Arriving Early

Finally, the Twins encourage our Group Organizers and all fans to allow more time getting to and from Target Field.

Road construction, parking and large walk-up crowds are likely to contribute to congestion at ballpark gates. Fans are

asked to consider all transportation options available, whether planning to drive, take transit, bike or walk.

Should you have any questions, please contact your Twins Sales and Service Representative directly or call Ticket

Sales and Service at 612-375-7454, and we will be happy to assist you.

HAPPY 40TH BIRTHDAY

CONTROL DATA RETIREES CLUB

This year 2019 the Control Data Retirees Club is 40 years old.

It came to life thanks to Helen Olson who gave birth to the idea that this club should be formed. She enlisted Dorothea Drotning to help define what this club would be and do. Their joint thoughts resulted in present-ing their plan to Don Wilkie (then Employee Clubs president,) and Ron Hurst (then CDC’s Manager of Employee Services,) and these four pro-ceeded to finalize and present their clubs plans and next followed by a request for funds to Norb Berg, which he saw would be granted.

Once the Club was off and running further expansion of its plans were completed followed by providing activities and programs to its members. The time and effort spent in operating and managing the Club for 40 years has provided hundreds of events to thousands of members at a subsidized cost who have bestowed the grade of A+ on these activities.

One very important contribution to the Club’s success is its Board of Directors which provided advice and ideas on the Club’s activities. In the past 40 years over 100 Club members served on the Board with dedication and commitment.

The Clubs Board knows its work is cut out for them.

Letter from Norb Berg

Dear Retirees,

On the occasion of the Retirees Club 40th birthday, I am pleased to have the opportunity to offer congratulations.

I also appreciate the privilege to express thanks to all who launched this visionary program and to those of you who have worked countless hours to not only keep the dream alive, but to again and again making it better.

The club continues to improve and creatively expand our enjoyment opportunities.

I would like to name some who are especially deserving of our gratitude, but I am sure I would forget somebody. Besides, you all know who they are. Take time to thank them.

And thanks to each and every one of you for helping to keep the dream alive. You always were and always will be a very special group of people.

I am proud to be one of you.

Norb Berg

Top Scams Targeting Seniors

Do not share information or send money

Fake IRS Calls: Scammers claim to be with the IRS and demand immediate

payment. The IRS doesn’t call people.

Lottery and Sweepstakes: You receive a check and letter announcing you have won a large

sum of money. You are asked to pay a fee/tax to collect the prize. Never pay money to claim a prize.

Grandparent Scam: You receive a call from someone pretending to be your grandchild. The caller

claims to be in trouble in a foreign country and asks you to wire money, to post bail or pay for damages. The money goes to a scam artist and you are out thousands of dollars.

Romance Scam: You meet someone on a dating website. The person quickly

professes love for you and then asks you to move off the secure dating site so you can be in touch via phone, email or text. Shortly afterward, you are asked for money. Never send money to someone you’ve met online.

Home Repair or Inspection Fraud: A person comes to your door and claims to be an expert

who can do repairs at a very low price. Trust your instincts. If the “expert” uses high-pressure sales tac-tics or you feel intimidated, turn them away. Never pay the full cost of a job up-front.

Imposter Schemes: You receive calls or emails from individuals claiming to be with Medicare, a

credit card company or a bank; these communications ask you to verify your personal information. Do not engage with these solicitors.
