April 1 Meeting Cancelled
The Club has decided to cancel the April 1 meeting due to concerns with the COVID-19
virus (corona virus). The Governor has declared a state of emergency. Numerous sports
and social group events have cancelled their March and latter activities, so it is prudent
for us to cancel. April 15 Spring Picnic is also cancelled. May 6 meeting TBD. The April
meeting cancellation effects our elections for VP and Treasurer. Need candidates. There
are still many late dues, please pay to be current. The Scholarship program will continue
with business as usual. Reminder scholarship applications are due April 1. Finally lets
all hope that this pandemic will be over soon.
All Members of Valley Retirees Clubs are welcome to attend any or all Events
Those of you attending events sponsored by the other Clubs should inquire if those events will still be held.
The mission of the Honeywell-Garrett Retirees Club of Arizona is to provide a
means for social, fellowship, and networking activity among retirees, and to be
involved in community and academic environments.

President’s Column
Dolf Strom welcomed members and guests. Larry Hinkle led the pledge.
ASU archivist Rob Spindler was our featured speaker, informing us of the relationship be-tween Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders and Arizona history.
In 1895 when the battleship Maine exploded in Havana harbor, Teddy Roosevelt was the Asst. Sec. of the Navy. He resigned that position and then volunteered for the 1
st US Cavalry to fight
against the Spanish in Cuba as a Lt Coronel.
In order to find men who could fight on horse-back, his friend Bucky O’Neil of Prescott at-tempted to recruit cowboys to form a Cowboy Regiment. James McClintock, who was in the first graduating class from Arizona Normal School (now ASU) along with students and a faculty member volunteered. Three Troops were formed and spent 3 weeks training in San Anto-nio, then on to Tampa for deployment to Cuba. Only 2 of the Troops actually deployed.
The battle of Kett Hill preceded the battle of San Juan Hill. Bucky O’Neil was killed during the battle. In the subsequent battle of San Juan Hill, the cavalry troops included Buffalo Soldiers but only 1 horse (!) ridden by TR. After this victory most battles were naval engagements. 122 Ari-zonans fought in Cuba with 9 KIA and 20
wounded. However, bonds formed during this war would later influence AZ politics.
TR was elected Governor of New York for 2 years and became US VP in 1901, and then President after McKinley was assassinated.
Key events during his presidency were the Newlands Reclamation Act 1902, a May 1903 visit to the Grand Canyon and subsequent visit with John Muir at Yosemite, creations of the Grand Canyon Game Preserve in 1906 and the Grand Canyon Nat’l Monument in 1908.
In 1908 TR promotes Taft for President but becomes angered when Taft opposes the AZ draft Constitution. In 1910 the population of Tempe was 1410. In 1911, after the dedica-tion of Roosevelt Dam, TR came to Tempe and spoke at the Tempe Normal School (now ASU).
In 1912, Roosevelt founded the Bull Moose Party to oppose the Taft reelection. The rift created by this action allowed Woodrow Wil-son to be elected President.
On Valentine’s Day (Feb 14) 1912. Arizona becomes a state.
50/50 winners were Phil Zeilinger and Mark Steele.
April 1 Meeting
Dennis Fennessy, who had been scheduled previously will speak on the Commemorative Air Force.
It began with a single plane.
Lloyd Nolen and a small group of ex-service pilots from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas pooled their money to purchase a P-51 Mustang in 1957. They formed a loosely defined organi-zation to share the pleasure and expense of maintaining the Mustang.
A short while later, the group added a pair of F8F Bearcats to the P-51 Mustang. At this point, the mission of the CAF became clear: save an example of every aircraft that flew during World War II ~ a mission no one else was undertaking.
What started as a hobby became an urgent mission to preserve history.

Our March meeting had 40 people. The speaker was Bill Spindler who did an excellent presenta-tion on the following; President Teddy Roosevelt; the Rough Riders; our state before we were a state; and ASU back in the days when it was the Tempe Normal School.
Membership is declining we need all members to recruit new members. Referrals are the only way the Club will grow. There are still some members who have not paid their dues. The majori-ty of our dues go to non-profit charities and our scholarship program.
Our Spring Picnic is coming soon. Please sign up with Diane Bennett either by phone or at the April meeting. Diane needs an accurate headcount for the caterer. Check the flyer in this news-letter for more info.
We need candidates for elected Club officers. There are four elected positions, President, Vice president, Treasurer, and Secretary. At this time we know that we need candidates for Vice-president and Treasurer. Our Club will shortly be selecting seven charities for this season. We al-ready gave to one. If you volunteer to be a Vice-president or Treasurer candidate, or Webmaster, you can select your favorite non-profit charity for a $100 donation. Candidates who also bring new members to the April meeting can direct another $100 to a non-profit charity. Here is a way to support your favorite non-profit charity and do good for the Club. We are getting desperate for new members and election candidates.
In the May meeting, the Board decides on the $100 donations for non-profit charities. All mem-bers feel free to suggest charities to any board member before the May meeting. The Board voted to hire Maureen van Dobben to do a major update to our website.
In conclusion Stu Mitnik, our Editor, did a fantastic trivia article in the March newsletter on the origin of “Kilroy was here”. Thanks Stu

New Honeywell Corporate policy prevents providing the Club with names of new retirees or deceased em-ployees. We need all Club Members to inform us if you know of a new retiree or the passing of a former employee.
Editor’s Corner
Our monthly meetings are held at the Scottsdale Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road, (just north of McDowell). The meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, September thru May, except for December – our Holiday Luncheon. Our social hour begins at 1:00 pm, club business is conducted at 1:45 pm, the presentation starts at 2:00 pm and adjournment is at 3:00 pm. Club Monthly Board Meetings will now be held at the Scottsdale Senior Center (same location as meetings) at 11:00 am in Room 10. Feel free to bring a lunch, meet with the Board and provide your thoughts and input.

Fix-It Guys – Gary Kains is the new Coordinator

Our purpose is to help club members and or surviving spouses who may need assistance with handyman type repairs and will appreciate saving some money.

Monthly Charity News
Our club donates to two types of recipients using two sources of funds. From our dues, we allocate $100 per month to local non-profit charities. Consideration is given to charities that provided speakers to our monthly meetings. At the January Meeting, the Club gave $100 to the Herpetological Sanctuary. Additional donations will be selected at the May Board Meeting and reported in the following September Newsletter. A list of the charities that we have supported in the past is posted on our website. If you have a favorite char-ity you would like the club to consider for donations, please bring it to our attention.
Also from our dues, we donate $100 per month, $800 total, and another $1500 per year ($2300 total) to the Scholarship Foundation. In addition our members can donate directly to the Scholarship Foundation. Mem-ber donations to date are $6008.

Are you 50+ years of age and a member of the Honeywell Retiree Social Club or Honeywell-Garrett Retiree Club? Do you have a college student in your family who is your descendant (children, grand-children, great-grandchildren and/or great-great grandchildren)? Are they currently enrolled at Ari-zona State, Northern Arizona or the University of Arizona as either an undergraduate or graduate student? Are they maintaining a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better?
If you can answer yes to all of the above, then your college student is eligible for a scholarship from the Honeywell Retiree Clubs Scholarship Foundation. This means FREE MONEY $$$ for your student to aid them with their college expenses, help them achieve their goals in life and become productive members of the community and society. These funds are available to our students through the generous contribu-tions of our retiree club members and Honeywell. The scholarships usually range in value from $500-$1,500 per academic year, depending on total donations. Application submissions opened on December 1 and will close April 1, 2020. No ap-plications will be accepted or considered after that date. Applications can be found on our website at www.hrcaz.org. Click on the Scholarship tab on the left side of the page.
Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes. The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3) so donations should be tax deductible on your state and federal returns (check with your tax advi-sor).

Southwest Airlines Tour Wednesday, April 15, 2010, 10:00 a.m.
This is a unique opportunity to tour Southwest Airlines Maintenance Fa-cility at Sky Harbor Airport.
You may be able to walk through an aircraft and sit in the cockpit then tour the maintenance and operation areas in a two hour guided tour. You will find out why the first aircraft were painted those colors, how the fit an aircraft that is too big into the hanger and maybe debate the correct part numbers of the APS we see in the stores. Last year we sat in an aircraft only 5 flight hours old and not yet entered service. Yes it had the new aircraft smell.
Names of attendees are required in advance for security purposes. The group is limited to 40 for practical reasons.

In the early 20th century, Arizona’s leaders knew the state’s future depended on a water supply that was secure, stable and renewable. They pursued that vision; the result was Central Arizona Project (CAP), a 336-mile system that brings Colorado River water to central and southern Ari-zona, delivers the state’s single largest renewable water supply and serves 80% of the state’s population.
Presentation topics include: CAP 101 Future water supplies for central and southern Arizona Water conservation and environment issues related to the Colorado
River Risk of Colorado River shortage and protecting Lake Mead
