Society is North America’s foremost conservation organization dedicated to preserving our sporting traditions by creating healthy forest habitat for ruffed grouse, American woodcock and other wildlife. RGS works with landowners and government agencies to develop critical habitat utilizing scientific management practices.

Green Mountain National ForestYoung Forest Habitat Creation Project

The Green Mountain National Forest (GMNF) Young Forest Habitat Creation Project (a collaborative effort of the U.S. Forest Service, the Ruffed Grouse Society, and the Mennen Foundation) will significantly improve habitat for ruffed grouse, American woodcock, migratory songbirds and other young forest dependent wildlife across the vast forested landscape of southern Vermont. The goal of the project is to increase the acreage of early successional habitat, or young forest, on the Manchester Ranger District of the GMNF through commercial timber harvests. The Forest Service proposes to harvest as much as 17,958 acres of forestland over a 15-year period beginning in 2019-2020. The adaptive planning process for this unprecedented habitat collaboration will be funded with support from RGS in partnership with the Mennen Foundation.
