Mission Established in 1961, The Ruffed Grouse Society is North America’s foremost conservaon organizaon dedicated to preserving our sporng tradions by creang healthy forest habitat for ruffed grouse, American woodcock and other wildlife. RGS works with landowners and government agencies to develop crical habitat ulizing scienfic management pracces. Green Mountain Naonal Forest Young Forest Habitat Creaon Project The Green Mountain Naonal Forest (GMNF) Young Forest Habitat Creaon Project (a collaborave effort of the U.S. Forest Service, the Ruffed Grouse Society, and the Mennen Foundaon) will significantly improve habitat for ruffed grouse, American woodcock, migratory songbirds and other young forest dependent wildlife across the vast forested landscape of southern Vermont. The goal of the project is to increase the acreage of early successional habitat, or young forest, on the Manchester Ranger District of the GMNF through commercial mber harvests. The Forest Service proposes to harvest as much as 17,958 acres of forestland over a 15- year period beginning in 2019-2020. The adapve planning process for this unprecedented habitat collaboraon will be funded with support from RGS in partnership with the Mennen Foundaon.
