INTRO
Continuance features pieces from five emerging female artists, all of which
link their work to a relationship with the past, or an ongoing notion of
being. The creators presented in this book come from seemingly different
paths and walks of life, but there are certain factors that unite them;
one being, they are currently fourth year students at OCAD University in
the midst of completing their BFAs in Photography. Even though these
artists’ share the same scholarly pursuits, the artworks vary, and each
artist’s practice focuses on highly different themes, concepts, and mediums.
·
The following series touch on topics such as a wandering mental state, race
– and what being a woman of mixed heritage means in a predominantly
white society, landscapes and their unexpected relation to memory, as well
as the histories and personalities that objects can carry. Through their
seemingly dissimilar visuals and methods, this book provides a cohesive
narrative of feelings and ideas that leave lasting impressions on an individual.

EMPTY GAZE (2014)
Devon Barrett is a Fine Art Photographer from British Columbia
who attends OCAD University where she will soon earn a BFA
with a major in photography & a minor in printmaking. Her work
deals with themes such as the environment, & the human condition.
·
The Daydreamers is about being lost in the mind; an occurance that we
all share. The images show such persons in the midst of their daydreams
totally unaware of the existence of anything. As if they have been entranced
& suspended in time, the environment decays & moves around them. This
series juxtaposes the relationship that humans have with the spaces that
they inhabit & which are endlessly searching for symmetry with one another.

Oh, Loving Hate (2015)
This series focuses on white standards of beauty, and the importance of representation within popular media.
Growing up as a child of Chinese and Romanian heritage Ella was always torn between the two, not quite
Asian enough to be considered desirable as a fetish - which is unfortunately the only way women of colour are
deemed alluring and not quite Caucasian enough to be thought of as conventionally attractive. Ella created this
piece to explore those notions of conflict within herself, looking specifically at how this affected her during her
childhood. Ella has taken imagery that she associates with her youth and has recontextualised them into diary-
like pages to draw attention to the intimate and private nature of these feelings of other-ness and isolation.
ELLA BOT
Ella Bot is an emerging Toronto-based artist, who is currently working on achieving her BFA in photography at OCAD University.
Although she is no longer a photographer in the traditional sense, her works still remain image-based as she now primarily works in the
medium of collage. Ella’s works often centre on the themes of feminisim, female representation, as well as race, and the
issues regarding these topics in contemporary Western society.
·
Ella is typically inspired by Greek mythology, oftentimes using particular myths
as a basis or starting point for her work. She frequently integrates Christian
iconography into her pieces as well, creating contrasts between images that
inspire menace and solace in the hopes of elliciting a sense of discomfort
in the viewer. Ella’s artworks have been described as having elements of
the sublime and the uncanny in them, further deepening this notion of an
uncomfortable or overwhelming viewing experience. Ella uses this technique
intentionally in order to emphasize the idea of social critique in her work.

KRYSTA CHIANTA
Krysta is an on-location, natural light photographer specializing in
landscapes and portraiture. She will soon be a graduate of OCAD
University holding a Fine Art Degree in Photography. Krysta deals with the
relationship between people and nature through manipulating mediums.
·
Krysta explores how certain places trigger memory. How I Remember You, is a
landscape series that deals with how memories of people are tied to a certain
location. This series was done on an analogue camera, to add to the nostalgic
feeling of the work. Each piece is altered to portray the faded memories.

KarellaMara Raffinan is an emerging interdisciplinary and installation
artist working out of Toronto, Ontario. She currently is working on her
final year at OCAD University finishing with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts
in Photography. Karella approaches her work with cross-disciplinary
methods by combing photographic elements and processes with sculptural
components thus creating new environments. Her practice draws from her
own personal life experiences, which she uses as a vehicle to connect
with her audience on a more intimate level. She is interested in human
connection, visual perception as well as the materiality and form of objects.

EXISTENCE, 2015
20 21
Existence, is a body of work, which questions the metaphysics of matter and
space, as well as looking into the formality of objects. Objects are filmed while
pushed against an elastic type of fabric, allowing the fabric to take shape
of the form of the object. Then the filmed objects are projected onto the
same fabric, forcing the viewers question if what is truly happening in reality.

Cailen Speers is a Toronto and Hamilton based photographer and stylist
currently working to obtain her Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography at
OCAD University. Her work often depicts vivid colour palettes and repetitive
grids and patterns that give the subject-matter a vivacious and quirky feel.
·
Much of her work deals with themes of nostalgia objects and antiquated
items recontextualized in still-lifes. This body of work was inspired by a cu-
riosity for objects that seemed to have lived a life outside of her own. By
photographing these objects Cailen is attempting to create a contemporary
context for these antiquated items, and in the process allowing the viewer
to imagine different narratives and characters through her simple still-lifes.
