What we doCALM’s helpline and webchat gives anyone the chance to offload and talk through problems. The professional helpline staff offer support, information and help finding specialist services.

Improving suicide prevention policy and practiceCALM challenges a culture that insists that a man who seeks support is somehow less of a man. We need to raise awareness of the issue so that everyone knows suicide is the single biggest cause of death of men under 45. We need to show that being silent isn’t being strong and push for change to improve suicide prevention policies and practices.

Starting conversations on masculinityOn thecalmzone.net you’ll find men talking about issues they face – it’s a place to find out more about how to overcome some of these problems, along with articles, videos and sketches on masculinity which range from the crass and comedic to stuff on music, sports, work and psychology. We also publish an award-winning magazine for young men, the CALMzine, available in Topman stores cross the UK.

Organising your own event We have hundreds of supporters who organise their own events for CALM to help increase awareness and raise money: gigs, comedy nights, scrabble competitions, cricket days, 5-a-side football, art exhibitions, bake sales, quizzes at work, anything fun you can think of…

We held a night in memory of my son Michael at his local pub to celebrate his birthday. His friend Matthew Allen organised a raffle, we sold cakes and Michael’s Aunty Mary Barton and friend Sharon Haddow cajoled the regulars to spend lots of money on football cards. We raised £550 for CALM.

– Jane Lunney

Our friend, a brother, a son and an

uncle Jeshan Ahmed tragically left

us January 2016. Sides of March

is a simple pledge. During the month

of March grow some sideburns

to raise awareness and funds to

prevent male suicide.

Last summer my brother, Bob, took his

own life. I’ve decided to cycle the 520km

between Paris and Geneva. The last time

I saw Bob was the night before the London

to Brighton bike ride. Mid-ride he sent

me a message “pedal!! proud of you

Ham x” So Bob, I’m doing this for you.

FUNDRAISING TIPSFirst things first – let us know what you’re doing by filling out our registration form

Once you’ve decided on what you’d like to do for CALM it’s time to get cracking with your fundraising.

If you’re organizing your own event: make a Facebook event page and invite all your friends. Make sure to like and share the CALM Facebook page, and invite your friends to do the same. Get in touch with us! We’d love to know what you’re doing for CALM. We can send you materials and help promote your event or fundraising. We will push your event on social media when we can – but do make best use of what’s already out there!

Online fundraisers raise moreIf you’re organising your own event: make a Facebook event page and invite all your friends. Make sure to like and share the CALM Facebook page, and invite your friends to do the same.

If you’re taking on a challenge, find CALM on justgiving.com or virginmoneygiving.com and set up your online fundraising page, it’s really quick and easy, just follow the instructions.

Top tips to smash your online fundraising target:

- Ask your most generous friends first and donate to your own supporter page. It sets the benchmark for other donations.

- Tell your story. Let people know your motivations for raising money for CALM.

- Make your page look interesting. Include pictures of yourself – it’s your chance to show off. People like to see who they’re donating to.

- Make a video of your event or preparation, then share it through social media and spread the word.

- Update your page regularly. Keep everyone updated on your progress. How’s the fundraising going? What obstacles have you come across? What are you really enjoying?

- Share, share, share… your page on Facebook and Twitter and email. More and more donations are being made via social media, 140 characters might not be much, but those snappy tweets can make a big impact to your fundraising. Make sure you follow us @theCALMzone, tag us in your tweets and use #savethemale so we can spread the word.

- If you get close to your target – increase it! If people think you’re close to meeting your target they may not donate the £200 they were going to if you’re only £75 off your goal.

- Let people know how much to donate – e.g. £7 will cover the cost of one phone call. £160 will cover the cost per night, per helpline. You want people to know that every donation makes a difference.

06

Get the word outWrite a blog. People love a good story. Try WordPress or Blogger (both free) and let people know your progress (especially for challenge events).

Use our poster and flyer templates to advertise your activity – put it on your work noticeboard, in shop windows, in ‘What’s on’ guides, local newspapers, pin it to your mate’s back.

Change your work and home email signature to let people know what you’re doing and make sure to let everyone know at work or any groups or clubs you’re part of.

Ask your company for matched giving. Many will match your fundraising pound for pound.

Remind your sponsors to tick the Gift Aid box on your sponsorship form and with online donations. It allows us to claim at least 25p from the government for every £1 donated. Thank your donors! Let them know their donation has been noticed and appreciated. Use text message donations. Just Text Giving is another way to ask people to give via their phones – you can ask for donations up to £10.

07

Use the media Local media is a brilliant source of promotion for your event or challenge. Ask for the news desk at local newspapers or your local radio or TV.

Make sure you invite them to your event on the day if appropriate. Include an invite for one of their photographers to come along too.

Don’t forget your email contacts and internal websites, newsletters or noticeboards. Your friends, colleagues and employers will be keen to hear your news, see pictures and follow your progress.

Register with us! Don’t forget to fill out our form to let us know what you’re up to.

Choose a dateChoose a date and time that works for you and your friends. Don’t rush it, as it always takes longer to organise than you might think. It’s a good idea to check if there are similar events being planned nearby. When you’ve decided what you’re doing and when, fill in our event / activity form and let us know your plans.

Choose a locationChoose a venue that’s large enough with all necessary equipment and facilities you’ll need. If you’d like to sell alcohol or have live music, check the venue has the required licenses.

Write a budgetSet out the costs: promotion, equipment hire, travel, food, and estimate how much money you’ll raise through tickets, raffles etc. You can dive straight in and organise your event, but you could end up losing money if you don’t think about your budget first…

- Can you reduce your costs through donated goods and volunteer help?

- Are there any local companies you can approach to see if they can support you?

Don’t forget to review your budget before going ahead, and make sure you know if you need to pay any upfront costs or on the day.

YOUR CALM EVENT Make a planWrite a check-list of all the things you need to do. Things to have on your list include - double checking equipment, briefing volunteers, arranging refreshments, putting up decorations.

If you have any merchandise, please note this should only be offered in return for a donation and not sold for a fixed price. You can suggest a minimum donation. If possible, announce your fundraising target and remind people why the money is being raised. And don’t forget to say a big thank you!

Like so many young people, we’ve both suffered at the hands of depression and loneliness and we lost an old friend to them earlier this year. We wanted the gig to start a conversation; by the end it was a mass sing-along.

– Rowan, The Rhythm Method

Here are a few legal basics and common sense to take note of. If you’re unsure after reading this, please give us a call or drop us an email.

Do you need a license? Generally speaking, if you’re raising money, selling or doing something in a public place, you’ll likely need to get permission or a license.

There are a few relevant ones to consider - public entertainment, public collections, raffles and lotteries, food or alcohol. If in doubt, contact your local authority as they hand out licenses and can advise you on what you need.

Public collectionsIt’s illegal to carry out house-to-house collections or collections on the public street without a license. You’ll need to get one from your local authority. All collectors must be at least 16 years old.

Private collectionsIf you want to collect on private premises you might need permission from the owner. Some popular places (supermarkets, train stations, pub collections etc.) might need extra permissions from the local authority, so check before you start. The simple rule is – if in doubt, check with your local authority or owner.

FoodFood safety laws apply when food is available for sale or not, so ensure you follow food hygiene procedures. You can find advice on www.food.gov.uk.

KEEP IT SAFE AND LEGAL

10

Thank everyone who helped out on the day. Don’t forget to make sure your donors declare Gift Aid to let your contribution grow. CALM can claim back the basic tax rate paid on your sponsored donation, currently 25p for every £1 given at no cost to you.

How to send us the money you’ve raised There’s a few ways you can do this: Use an online fundraising page e.g a justgiving.com or virgingiving.com account.

Send us a cheque, payable to ‘Campaign Against Living Miserably’, to our PO Box address with details of how you raised the money.

Pay in to our bank account:

Account Name: CALM Bank: Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) Sort Code: 40–52-40 Account No: 00027705 If you do decide to pay into our bank account, please put your name as the reference so we can track the donation.

Whichever method you choose, please return your donation form so we can track your fundraising.

PLEASE DON’T SEND CASH IN THE POST.
