Page 2 A Word From...
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Why did Christ start with the poor in spirit? What does “poor in spirit mean? From www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/ III. POVERTY OF HEART 2546 "Blessed are the poor in spirit." The Beatitudes reveal an order of happiness and grace, of beauty and peace. Jesus celebrates the joy of the poor, to whom the Kingdom already belongs: The Word speaks of voluntary humility as "poverty in spirit"; the Apostle gives an example of God's poverty when he says: "For your sakes he became poor." 2547 The Lord grieves over the rich, because they find their consolation in the abundance of goods. "Let the proud seek and love earthly kingdoms, but blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven." Abandonment to the providence of the Father in heaven frees us from anxiety about tomor-row. Trust in God is a preparation for the blessedness of the poor. They shall see God. From www.catholiceducation.org Before the Crib; FR.LEONARD M. PUECH, OFM: (In part…) To be poor is not the same as to be miserable. Misery means to lack even the basic necessities of life, food, clothing, shelter, etc. Poverty means to have enough to satisfy man's elementary needs without superfluity, as St. Paul recommends to Timothy: "Having food and sufficient clothing, with these let us be content" (I Tim. 6,8).Poverty neither sanctifies nor edifies unless it is poverty in spirit, unless it is voluntary. One may be
poor in reality, but with a desire for riches in his heart. This is not poverty which sanctifies, because it is not accepted. It seems however, that many, even if they are not poor by choice, submit to their lot and do not rebel against their condition. Even this imperfect poverty is not without its spiritual fruit of humility, kindness, compassion, and sobriety. Poverty in spirit should not be used as a blanket to cover up indulgence in luxuries. Interior detachment counts; one who lives in luxury may be poorer in spirit than one who is really poor but craves money. Yet we know that it is impossible to serve two masters (Mt. 6,24); that one cannot love God and love the world at the same time (James 4,4 -1; Jo. 2,15). Voluntary poverty becomes a powerful means of sanctification, because it detaches from the world and the three concupiscence which run it — love of pleasure, love of money and love of honor. Not only does voluntary poverty, when it is real, detach from the goods of this world, it also enriches with virtues. It means the acceptance of the humiliations, which accompany poverty and this is the humility of which Jesus says "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Mt. 5,3). It means renouncing power and accepting the weakness of the poor and this is the meekness to which Jesus promises: "Blessed are the meek for they shall possess the earth" (Mt. 5,4). It means accepting privations and suffering to receive in return this blessing: "Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted" (Mt. 5,5). The experience of real poverty makes one realize the injustice there is in the world, and it creates a hunger and a thirst for justice, not only social but especially spiritual to which is promised: "Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for justice for they shall be satisfied" (Mt. 5,6). To experience the sufferings of real poverty softens the heart and to compassion. It is a well known fact that the poor as a rule are moved to help other poor more
readily than the rich. This compassion receives the assurance: "Blessed are the merciful, they shall obtain mercy" (Mt. 5,7). Voluntary poverty detaches from created goods, which purifies the heart and prepares for the vision of God: "Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God" (Mt. 5,8). Voluntary poverty is the best means to secure peace; nobody envies one who has nothing and he who has chosen poverty envies nobody. Poverty is not only a powerful means of sanctification, it is also a most effective means of edification. It may be called the virtue of the apostle. The example of Jesus should be enough to convince us: to save the world he chose to be poor and to preach the gospel he chose twelve ignorant fishermen. Besides, when he sent them on their first mission he instructed them to take nothing: "Do not keep gold or silver, or money in your girdles, no wallet for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staff" (Mt. 10,9-10). What is it that gives poverty such power? First of all it corresponds to God's plan to save the world through the folly of the Cross: "The foolish things of the world has God chosen to put to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world has God chosen to put to shame the strong, and the base things of the world and the despised has God chosen, and the things that are not, to bring to naught the things that are; lest any flesh should pride himself before him" (I Cor. 1,27-29). In reality the gospel cannot be preached without real and voluntary poverty. It is not enough to preach it, to teach people not to kill, not to steal, not to commit adultery, etc. Everybody knows that. To preach the gospel means to announce the good news, that God loves us and invites us to love him and to share his own happiness. How can anybody convince men that this is true, that it is the only happiness worth living for, that they must not seek happiness in the goods of the world, unless he himself is detached from them? If he is not, he will be content to preach the morality of the pagan philosophers: enjoy yourselves, but be reasonable and avoid excesses. Or if he preaches detachment of the goods of the world, who is going to believe, what he does not practice?
On the other hand, real and voluntary poverty preaches both to the rich and to the poor. To the rich it preaches the necessity of detaching themselves from their riches and provokes their admiration and their generosity. To the poor it preaches the acceptance of their poverty, wins their confidence and brings down the wall which separates the rich and the poor. ...It was true with St. Joseph Benedict Cottolengo; it was true of Mother Teresa of Calcutta; their very poverty provoked admiration and generosity and brought them vocations and material help…. ...let us learn the lesson of
poverty and humility that it teaches us, and be preserved from the fascination of vanities and the whirlwind of desires, which corrupt the heart
(Wis. 4,12).
Pope Francis gives the Church six new Beatitudes-11/2/2016
www.osv.com/OSVNewsweekly/PapalVisit/Articles/ Pope Francis offered six new Beatitudes “to confront the troubles and anxieties of our age with the spirit and love of Jesus,” — Blessed are those who remain faithful while enduring evils inflicted on them by others and forgive them from their heart. — Blessed are those who look into the eyes of the abandoned and marginalized and show them their closeness. — Blessed are those who see God in every person and strive to make others also discover him. — Blessed are those who protect and care for our common home.
-Blessed are those who renounce their own comfort in order to help others. — Blessed are those who pray and work for full communion between Christians.

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
January 29, 2017
Prayers for Vocations
Loving and Generous God,
it is You who call us by name
and ask us to follow You.
Help us to grow in the Love
and Service of our Church
as we experience it today.
Give us the energy and courage of Your Spirit to shape its
future. Grant us faith-filled leaders who will embrace
Christ's Mission of love and justice.
Bless the Church by raising up dedicated and generous
leaders from our families and friends who will serve Your
people as Sisters, Priests, Brothers, Deacons and Lay
Ministers. Inspire us to know You better
and open our hearts to hear Your call.
We ask this through our Lord.

Blessed are the poor, the sorrowing, and those who seek peace and justice. The truth
of these words gives us confidence now to pray.
That the Church may proclaim the Beatitudes with clarity and live them with
fidelity, we pray to the Lord...
That the powerful and influential of the world may hear God's word and boast only
in the Lord, we pray to the Lord...
That God's people may seek justice by working to save the poorest of the poor,
the unborn children in danger of abortion, we pray to the Lord...
That the life of every human person, from conception to natural death, might be
enshrined and protected in our laws; we pray to the Lord…
For all Catholic schools, that they may grow ever stronger in their mission to
impart knowledge and faith, and to enable our children to be strong witnesses to
truth, love, and the sanctity of life, we pray to the Lord…
That the sick may find comfort in the lesson of the Beatitudes, and that in their
suffering and loneliness they may find the Lord's consolation, we pray to the
Lord...
That those who have died, especially those who were ridiculed for their faith, may
find heavenly reward, we pray to the Lord...

Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will
shout for joy. Protect our soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with
the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power
of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they
may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

What is the Annual Catholic Appeal?
People Helping People
The Annual Catholic Appeal is our annual tradition
that connects us to thousands of people in our
diocese who need our help every day. Bishop
Soto’s vision calls for all Catholics to make a financial donation to the
Appeal each year.
It is vital, on an annual basis, to more than one hundred programs that
help people in desperate need to overcome extreme physical, economic
or psychological hardship. Tens of thousands of people in the 20 counties
of our diocese are helped by Catholic works and parish programs that
receive funding from the Annual Catholic Appeal.
More information about the Annual Catholic Appeal and donation
opportunities are coming in February.

The SF Walk for Life 2017 was a great success.! Thank you everyone who participated and to those who contributed & donated to help make this event hap-pen. We are especially grateful to the Knights of Columbus whose donation allowed us to offer this trip at a lower cost and of course to Father Soane for their continued support in this annual event.
Spiritual Adoption

that society, through its laws and
social institutions must protect and
nurture human life at every state of its
existence. For more information

CFF PARENTS TO ATTEND PARISH LENTEN RETREAT
All CFF Parents are encouraged to attend the PARISH LENTEN RETREAT to be held on March 4th (Sat) 8:30 a.m.-3:00 pm., at Divine Mercy Church. Parents of children in their second year of preparation for First Communion and for Confirmation are required to attend. If the Confirmation children’s Sponsors are in the area, they are required to attend as well. As a Lenten sacrifice, bring a simple brown bag lunch to the retreat. The Parish Lenten Retreat will help us celebrate the Season of Lent in a more meaningful way. It aims to help us appreciate more the Paschal Mystery of Jesus and to find meaning in our own experience of suffering and pain. It hopes to bring about a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Mass, where we celebrate Jesus’ pledge of undying love, the memorial of his Passion, Death, and Resurrection. It offers us an opportunity for spiritual healing through a thorough examination of conscience and celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
“Jesus is counting on you!”
Please mark your calendar, be there for the Parish Lenten Retreat!
