His work as a educator and poet are not separate: “Each generation has to be reintroduced to its own history,” he said. Rather than suggesting his students replace their present concerns with those of the past, Kazembe hopes to create bridges between the two, to “introduce alternatives” to present day popular culture. “There’s a great deal of unexplored cultural content: great poetry, great art, great film,” he continued. The title of his keynote lecture last spring, “Run Toward Fear,” is borrowed (with permission) from his colleague Haki Madhubuti’s poetry collection by the same name. When asked why he chose that as the title and, ultimately, the theme of his talk, he said: “This is the age of the sellout. People are worried. There is so much fear. It can be debilitating. It can get in the way. It compounds everything. It is yet another boulder to move. It is [also] a reminder of our capacity to overcome, to muster courage, to face that which [we] are most confounded by. It allows you to find out who you are and what you are made of...It cheapens us when we run from [fear].” Fear, in this sense, is a conduit for courage, “our capacity to overcome.” Facing it allows us to grow, Kazembe implies. This is his message, his hope and his lasting impact. Sound Advice from Dr Karen Monkman ldquoDonrsquot Fall Prey to Predatory Publishersrdquo

All publishing opportunities are not created equal and as such students who are interested in publishing should get to know how the process works and how to recognize opportunities that could undermine their career Here are two examples of ldquotemptationsrdquo to avoid

1 After dissertations are completed many students receive emails from publishing companies offering to publish their dissertations These are at best self-publishing situations not peer-reviewed academic opportunities

2 After presenting at conferences we all get emails from unknown journal publishers offering to publish papers These similarly are not solid academic venues They are collectively known as ldquopredatoryrdquo publishers and some are ldquopay to publishrdquo (meaning you pay them to publish your work mdash there is no oversight or review of your work)

The problem with these ldquoopportunitiesrdquo is that they are not seen as credible or legitimate among researchers or academics (So anyone wanting to adjunct to teach full-time in a university or to develop as a legitimate researcher must (a) be aware of these traps and stay away from them and (b) become knowledgeable about how the publishing world works in academia) Here is some basic information

1 All credible work is peer reviewed If someone offers to publish your work without putting it through a peer review process it will not be viewed favorably by those who will later need to assess the quality of your work (eg prospective

employers or funders)

2 Stay away from predatory publishers Here is some information on them httpqcc l ibguidescomopenpredatorypublishing and httpguidesemichedupredatorypubs

3 Self-published books are treated the same way by the scholarly community If a manuscript hasnrsquot been published in a well-known academic press that vets submitted work to assess its quality the academic community will have a hard time taking it seriously

The peer review process is designed so people in the field can assess the quality of onersquos work Assessing quality is always part of hiring decisions assessing faculty during tenure and promotion processes and for things like annual reviews grant applications book proposals etc It is an important base on which most researchers and faculty build their careers The logic is that peers in onersquos field are in the best position to assess quality as they know the field and can assess new work in relationship to it They also tend to be experienced researchers so they can assess the quality of data collection and analysis

This is not meant to discourage students from submitting to journals but before you do talk to your professors about the process They can help you to understand for example how to choose a good journal for your work how to get an article ready to submit how to submit it and what to expect in the review process [Editorrsquos note these would be great questions to ask at the EDSA Spring Conference]

On Political Culture and the Life of the UniversityA Discussion with Dr Haymes

Dr Stephen Haymes and thirteen other participants from various stages of the EdD Program gathered at Red Lion Pub on October 28 2016 The discussion focused on the indelible connection between the current political climate in America and the life of the University particularly as it pertains to free speech and issues of diversity In conversing about and questioning the current political and social rhetoric it became clear that the EdD Program community is more than concerned but also seeking ways to mitigate and bring awareness to some of these tensions All involved discussed how theyrsquove been personally and professionaly affected by the issues of race and class of free speech and hate speech The impassioned group also discussed ways in which they could leverage their own knowledge and awareness of the issues to take advantage of what Dr Haymes referred to as the present ldquopolitical spacerdquo What

is this ldquospacerdquo In one regard it is an opportunity in another it is a polarizedpolarizing spacetimerhetoric operationalizing as a politics of fear blame and shame ldquoWhat do we do How can we combat it How do we take advantage of it as an opportunity for changerdquo these are just some of the questions participants endeavored to address and ultimately take away from the discussion Have thoughts or suggestions about other topics to discuss or ways to move through dialogue into action EdD News would like to hear them Send comments suggestions etc to eddprogramdepauledu
