VITRUM 2011

International trade fair for machinery, equipment and systems for the processing of flat and hollow glass; glass and finished products for the industry

Milan, December 2011 RGR

Vitrum 2011: an injection of optimism The financial meltdown in many international markets, which had already impacted the performance of many sectors in the mechanical tools industry in a profound way back in mid-2008, appears to be slowly improving. Good growth rates were posted in 2010, followed by a series of highs and lows in the first semester 2011. However, this up-down trend – periods with a good level of demand alternating with sharp standstills - did not make medium/long-term planning easy for companies, and made the road to recovery very difficult and problematic. If we also consider the heavy burden of the Euro/US$ Exchange rate for European companies and the credit squeeze by banks, one can easily understand the prevailing mood at the opening of Vitrum 2011 Now that the exhibition has closed, it can be easily claimed that the industry, with its well-known vitality, has demonstrated the will to emerge from this difficult period and go back to the growth rate that had previously been achieved uninterruptedly for more than 30 years.

As with all the exhibitions in 2011, Vitrum felt the pinch of the difficult economic and financial situation in the market, and was unable to up the slightly lower bookings for exhibition spaces of 2009. In fact, the net exhibition space in 2011 was almost the same as in 2009. However, by taking full advantage of the functionality of Fiera Milano’s large pavilions at Rho, the exhibition layout was made as compact as possible, avoiding the sprawling effect of more than 200 m long pavilions. A quick look at the general layout of the exhibition clearly shows how the four pavilions were arranged in an identical way.

4

As always, efforts were focused on optimizing visitor flows, assigning the exhibition spaces so as to create a consistent product category showcase. In brief, Pavilion 13 was primarily devoted to insulating glass and to large machinery, 15, 22 and 24 had a mix of products, hosting producers of machinery and accessories for various branches of glass processing. Part of Pavilion 15 featured producer companies of small equipment and producers and transformers of glass products as well as two sections VHG – Vitrum Hollow Glass for hollow glass companies and Vitrum Energy, dedicated to new glass technologies and applications for the production of energy from renewable sources.

Exhibitors There were 482 exhibitors, 251 from Italy and 231 from 29 countries, accounting respectively for 52.07% and 47.93% of the total. These figures are almost the same and indicate that, despite the difficult economic situation, the Milanese event has a very broad and consolidated international reach. The profile of the companies exhibiting at Vitrum 2011 is particularly interesting: more than 87% were producers and directly present at the exhibition.

The countries of origin rose from 101 at the previous exhibition to 102 at Vitrum 2011. However, apart from these good results, the high level of real interest was noteworthy and absolutely important given the global economic meltdown. Most of the exhibitors interviewed said that they had met competent trade people during the 4-day exhibition who were keen on starting and maintaining trade relations. This clearly shows once again, the distinguishing feature of this magical world of glass: despite economic crises, rising petro prices, the incredible Euro/US$ exchange rate, this sector has always demonstrated unwavering vitality. Companies, whether suppliers or customers, are always on the move around the world on the lookout for things to see, people to meet, and not to miss out on the most important appointments.

Europe Europe, as always, was the best represented with 7,117 trade people during the 4 day exhibition, equal to 72.79% of foreign visitors. An overall analysis of European countries shows a slight (+ 0.23%) versus the previous Vitrum, although there was a significant drop in trade people from Greece, Spain and Portugal. Apart from some double-digit percentages, albeit numerically insignificant, increases were posted for Belgium (+26.38%), the Netherlands (+40.91%), and United Kingdom (+24.62%). For the non-EU countries, the highest numbers were posted for Switzerland at 309 (+11.55%), and Turkey at 261 (+8.75). Russia, with 348 trade people (+83.16%) despite the ongoing difficult situation which is primarily financial, remains an important export market for our products.

Africa Despite the significant percentage increase in first-entry attendance by this continent overall, absolute values remained modest once again at this year’s exhibition. Algeria ranked first with 53 people, followed by Morocco with 35 and Egypt with 22, confirming the stable relations between Italy and the African side of the Mediterranean area, despite the recent political events in the area.

America The American continent, with the exception of the exhibitions staged in 2001 (marked by the tragedy of September 11) and 2003 (the crisis in Argentina), continued its upward trend which began way back in 1987. An analysis of the figures for 2011 shows that there was a 39.45% increase in first entries and total attendance was + 9.73%. Apart from Argentina and Venezuela, more trade people attended from all the countries. Noteworthy among these was Brazil again, confirming the important role that the country has come to play in the world economic scene.

Asia The comparison of the percentages for 2011 over 2009 shows some interesting variations, which may point to positive trends. In absolute terms however, the figures confirm the ups and downs of the Asian countries which for many years now have been alternating positive figures with negative ones. Particularly noteworthy are the increase for Korea, China and Japan. The figures were down for almost all the Middle Eastern countries, demonstrating a stagnant situation in that area.

Italian visitors Preliminary figures for the Italian market of machinery, accessories and special products for glass processing in 2011 seem to indicate a slight growth over the previous year. Considering the difficult situation worldwide, this state of the Italian market, albeit stagnant, leaves room for hopes for the future. The statistics for Italian trade people at Vitrum 2011 and the comments heard in the exhibition aisles seem to confirm that the market is still struggling a great deal. The fall over the previous show was more than 6%.

General Notes The comments made by exhibitors and a sample of visitors show that Vitrum is definitely considered one of the major industry events worldwide, both technically because of the vast array of products on offer, and aesthetically with its elegant overall image. All the working parts of the Fiera Milano complex at Rho have now been tried and tested, and all the roads and routes connecting to the highway bypasses have been completed making it very traffic-free and easy to access the exhibition complex. The railway and subways were also intensively used. Reception and entrance procedures The staging of Vitrum 2011 in Pavilions 13+15 and 22+24, as in the previous session, made for a rather compact area, allowing for two spacious and functional reception areas for visitor registration and reception. Here the customary and consolidated entrance procedure proved to be even more practical and functional, with reliable worldwide mailing, using Vitrum’s own mailing list. For the first time, no personal entrance badges were mailed out, but an online registration service was used which operated until the opening of the exhibition. Despite the fears that always accompany innovations, there were no problems and trade people were fully satisfied.

The 1st Vitrum gourmet festival was the big news at this year’s exhibition. For many years now Vitrum has teamed its regular commercial exhibition with events that are associated with Italian art and culture, demonstrating how it is possible to reconcile high technology and the ability to innovate with history and tradition. Over the years, exhibitions have been staged to give a cross-section of life in this country from the Maritime Republics to the present-day through the history of glass. In 2009, the “Vitrum Lab” educational workshop was set up for elementary school children dedicated specifically to artisan glassmaking. There were also live exhibitions by the great Murano masters during the event, who created spectacular works under the eyes of admiring and amazed visitors. This year the choice fell on showing a different aspect of Italian art: taking a culinary event of excellence on the stage. For the first time at an exhibition, a veritable festival of sophisticated Italian cuisine took place with the participation of four of the world’s best chefs, all awarded with “Michelin stars”, the most prestigious of international awards. Claudio Sadler, Giancarlo Morelli, Norbert Niederkofler, Gianni D’Amato, from the height of their 7 stars, offered Vitrum visitors and exhibitors original menus created specifically for an international audience. The setting: an elegant restaurant set up inside Pavilion 22 and built around a beautiful exhibition of works of art in glass by Japanese artist Oki Izumi.
