The Faculty of Law of Leiden University founded the institute in 1986. In addition to his duties as Director of the International Institute of Air and Space Law of Leiden University, Pablo Mendes de Leon maintains a vast range of memberships in organisations that work to combine law and practice of aviation law and policy. Andrew Harakas Partner, Clyde & CoAndrew is head of the U.S. Aviation Law Practice Group at Clyde & Co US LLP. He has over 25 years of trial and litigation experience in aviation (passenger and cargo), complex tort, regulatory (DOT, FAA, OFAC), insurance and product liability matters. Andrew has represented clients and tried cases arising out of major aviation losses and has extensive appellate experience, having argued numerous appeals before federal and state appellate courts throughout the nation, including three cases before the United States Supreme Court, including Olympic Airways v. Husain, 540 U.S. 644 (2004), Dooley v. Korean Air Lines, 524 U.S. 116 (1998), and Zicherman v. Korean Air Lines, 516 U.S. 217 (1996). He often advises clients on complex litigation, jurisdictional and appellate issues and has filed amicus briefs on behalf of IATA in appellate court cases addressing the Montreal Convention, the Tokyo Convention and the ATSA.Andrew has published numerous articles on a variety of issues relating to domestic and international aviation liability and insurance law and was the General Editor of the twenty-six chapter book Litigating the Aviation Case (4d ed. 2017). Between 1988 and 1997, worked for Sabena, dealing with facilitation, multilateral and bilateral relations. Was also the Sabena accredited representative for IATA.

Erik van Goor Corporate Legal Counsel at KLMErik van Goor started his professional career in the aviation sector for KLM in 2005. Before KLM he worked between 2000-2005 for the Dutch Telecommunication regulator OPTA, currently known as the Dutch Competition Authority ACM and between 2000-2005 for the law firm currently known as Yspeert advocaten, where he practiced civil law, company law and bankruptcy law. He started to work for KLM specifically in the field of economic regulation, the relation between incumbent Schiphol and the airport users. Nowadays he is involved in a variety of strategic issues between KLM, Schiphol and the government such as the development of Lelystad Airport, capacity issues on Schiphol, Slots, local rules, Airport charges, Passenger rights and discussions about tax on aviation.He supports the Board of Airline Representatives and the Schiphol Aiport Operating Committee on several issues.Besides his work for KLM, in 2015 he commenced to work also for Martinair as a general counsel. Stamatis Varsamos is specialized in aviation law and he is the writer of the book "Airport Competition Regulation" published in 2016 by Kluwers International. Also, member of the World Airport Lawyers Association (WALA), member of the list of experts of air & space law Institute of Sant Petersburg University and member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) .

Mia WoutersProfessor Aviation Law - University of Ghent, Of Counsel LVP Law, BrusselsMia works as Of Counsel at the law firm LVP Law in the Brussels office. She and her team, which is put together according to the needs of the file in order to obtain the maximum result for the client, solve problems and represent the interest of companies in all aspects of their air transport operations. This involves dealing with day to day contracts to managing the more complicated relations with third parties/countries, security and safety issues or setting up airlines. Her practice includes wet and dry leasing, buying/selling and repossessing of aircraft. She represents loss adjusters and insurance companies in major accidents and incidents and works with regulators all over the world.In sum Mia is actively involved in the full range of legal issues arising in the aviation and tourism industry.In 2009, Mia was appointed Professor of Aviation Law at the University of Gent at the Department of European, Public and International Law. Victoria Alice NguyenManager Overall Strategy and Air Traffic Rights, Lufthansa GroupVictoria Nguyen is an aviation enthusiast and lawyer by training. She studied international and comparative legal studies at SOAS University of London and philosophy at the Leibniz Universität Hanover . She has demonstrated experience in government and regulatory affairs, as well as public relations. For several years she worked in the European Parliament on Transport, Foreign Affairs and Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. Switching sides from the legislator to industry, she joined Lufthansa Group in their Brussels EU Liaison office. There she managed advocacy on competition, environment, safety and security, as well as consumer rights. Since March 2018, she manages overall strategy and air traffic rights for Lufthansa Group in the Headquarter in Frankfurt. Her working languages are German, English, and French.

Jim Callaghan Aviation Consultant at Croon Callaghan Aviation ConsultingJim Callaghan has worked as a lawyer for over 20 years, most of it in the transport sector, primarily with airlines. After working as a lawyer specialising in competition law for Linklaters in Brussels, Jim went on to become the General counsel for Ryanair for 9 years and then Etihad for 7 years. He recently acted as General Counsel for Uber for the EMEA region before returning to the aviation industry where he co-founded a consulting company, Croon Callaghan Aviation Consulting LLP, to support airlines with complex legal and regulatory issues, such as EU261 - the EU Regulation on airline passenger compensation.

Gregory Pelecanos Senior Partner, Ballas-Pelecanos & Associates L.P.C.Born in 1960 in London, Gregory is Senior Partner at Ballas, Pelecanos & Associates LPC where he supervises the firm’s Competition, Agency & Distribution and Special Sectors (Defence, Energy and Pharmaceuticals) Group. Katia Avramidou Legal Counsel, Aegean AirlinesKatia G. Avramidou is the Legal Advisor of Aegean Airlines and of its subsidiary Olympic Air. She is a graduate of the National & Kapodistrian University of Law of Athens and a postgraduate (LL.M.) in International and Commercial Law, with distinction, by the University of Kent, Canterbury - UK. She is also the lawyer of the Hellenic Air Carriers’ Association (H.A.C.A.). She is member of the Athens Bar Association and eligible to act before the Supreme Court. She specializes mainly in the aircraft and engines purchase, aviation finance and lease transactions, aircraft delivery and closing procedures, aircraft registrations, as well as in mergers and acquisition of airlines.
