of EDCTP

EDCTP
EDCTP – A background
• EDCTP was founded in September 2003 in response to the high global burden of three poverty-related diseases namely HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria
EDCTP’s mission
• To fight the burden of poverty-related diseases in sub-Saharan Africa by accelerating the development of new or improved tools against HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, and to generally improve the quality of research in relation to these diseases
• Through coordination of EU Member States national health research programmes on these diseases
• Through equal and effective partnership with Africa and working in collaboration with other partners
EDCTP – A pioneer initiative
• A pioneer European Commission treaty Article 169 (now Article 185) initiative
• A mechanisms for cooperation and coordination of participating European member state national programmes
• Harmonising member state funding• Partnership with Sub-Sahara Africa• Clinical trials and capacity strengthening
Current situation and steps already taken
• Internal review by EDCTP• An external review by the EC• A public consultation• An Impact assessment • Internal consultation during an ‘All constituencies
meeting’ in February 2009 and other forums• The general outcomes of these steps have been
to continue with EDCTP and the conclusions have been very promising for the future of EDCTP.
The Expected Outcome of This Meeting
• Member states as well as the Commission Services provide further input and amendments to the tabled proposal
• Consensus proposal ready to be submitted to the Competitiveness Council on 26 November 2010
