Worship in Music Sam Cox, Minister of Music and Worship
March 2017
Vol. 5 Issue 3
Connecting Generations to Grow Relationships with God, Others, and Creation
Although the Easter season doesn’t attract quite as
much attention musically as does the Christmas
season, the music program won’t be slowing down.
Plan to begin your Easter Sunday at 6:30 as the
Youth Praise Band under the leadership of Jim
Geisinger presents our annual Sunrise Service. The
celebratory sounds of brass instruments will be
heard at 11:00, along with singing from choir and
congregation.
Although we will not be presenting a cantata with
orchestra as we did at Christmas, the invitation is
extended to all singers to join the choir in prepara-
tion for this single most important Sunday of the
entire year. Your time commitment will be some-
what shorter than at Christmas, and now as then
music for the season will be rehearsed at the beginning of practice time (7:00-8:30 on Wednesday evenings).
We will begin working on the Easter anthem(s) on March 8.
On Palm/Passion Sunday the Wesley Singers, combined with the Chancel Choir, will present Lloyd Larson’s
extended medley Near the Cross. Lasting nearly nine minutes, this piece combines three seasonal hymns
(Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, and I Will Sing of My Redeemer) with narrator,
flute, clarinet, synthesized strings, piano, and congregation. All are invited to join, either at Wesley Singers’ or
Chancel Choir’s rehearsals. Rehearsal CDs are available for you to learn your part in your own time, if desired.
Beginning on March 8, Wesley Singers rehearsals will begin at 1:00 rather than 1:30, so that singers participat-
ing in the Lenten Lunches (which begin at noon) can move immediately from one event to the other. We will
continue meeting at 1:00 through April 5. Wesley Singers will not rehearse on April 12, but will resume regu-
lar 1:30 rehearsals beginning April 19.
Jubilation Handbells are scheduled to return on March 5, when they will play the prelude at the 11:00 service.
We still need additional players – some of our ringers are valiantly working to cover two or three positions!
Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 6:00 in the sanctuary balcony.

There is so much to do before May 2 the opening day of the Farmers
Market. The Board has met and there are so many ways that you can
be involved.
Our immediate need is for a Marketing Manager and someone that
knows the business side of social media.
Sponsors for the Market. Businesses or groups that would like to
get their information & product out to the community. $100
gets you and your business a tent & table and sponsorship of
the Market for one Tuesday. (Forms in church office.)
Nutrition education - help with cooking demos, recipes & inform-
ing the public what is available at the Market and getting them
to try new produce.
Take down crew. Report on Tuesdays at 5:50 pm & help take
down and stow tents, tables and signs. Usually done by 6:30 pm.

Wednesday, March 1, we will have a Service of Ashes. Lent
takes place 40 days before Easter, not counting Sundays. This
season encourages us to examine our lives and reflect on the
journey of Jesus as he makes his way to Jerusalem and to the
Cross.
Traditionally we have been encouraged to “give something up”
for Lent. Many of us may go through the exercise of doing
just that. I have heard of those who give up things like their
least favorite foods; Brussel sprouts and the like. The point is
we don’t like giving up things that are special to us for any rea-
son but we feel like we need to do something. It is easy to live into the mindset of “what is the least I can do
and still get by.” I’ve done that in my life. I’m sure you may have as well.
This year as we continue through the days that lead beyond the season of Epiphany and into Lent, I invite you
to do something a little different. This year, instead of giving something up for Lent, do this. Give something
to God during this Lenten season. It can make a positive difference in the way we live our faith and share our
lives through the Body of Christ, the Church.
Calling all Men!!! Please join Latham’s United Methodist Men for
breakfast on Sunday, the 5th of March – breakfast begins at 7:00 in
Farley Hall with a brief meeting and guest speaker following at 7:30.
We are pleased to welcome Deputy Matthew Scratchard as our
speaker. Deputy Scratchard will brief us on preparation for and
response to intruder situations in a church environment. Unfortunate
recent events place churches in the position of researching and
preparing for scenarios that could be critical. We look forward to
Deputy Scratchard sharing his experience and helping our men in
their efforts to be prepared.
United Methodist Men will skip their regularly scheduled breakfast in
April to host the Annual Easter Egg Hunt Pancake Breakfast on
Saturday, April 15. More details about this breakfast will be coming
in March.
Beginning in May, United Methodist Men will begin meeting for their
monthly breakfast on the first Saturday of each month and changing
to an 8:00 am start time. So mark your calendars now for Saturday, May 6 at 8:00 am. Details about our first
Saturday breakfast will be coming in April.
Please let me know if you have any questions or require additional information.
