Shamash Spotlight
In this month’s Shamash Spotlight, I’d
like to say thank you to a congregant
who works tirelessly both behind the
scenes, and when needed, in the fore-
ground. She is almost singlehandedly
responsible for a quiet, but important
fundraiser here at TBH. Once a quar-
ter, members and non-members alike
who share a passion for making scrap-
books and other crafts spend the better
part of a weekend in the TBH Social
Hall. They pay to rent space and take
that time to work on project and be so-
cial.
In recent years, she has served on the
TBH Board. While she was co-chair of
the Youth Committee, she, along with
others, helped coordinate bringing in
what would become the JTConnect pro-
gram. As co-chair of the Religious Prac-
tices Committee, she played a role in
bringing the new Reform Movement
Siddur, Mishkan T’Filah, to TBH.
Whether it’s making props and cos-
tumes for the Purim Shpiel, or helping
to organize the Oneg list, she’s yet an-
other example of all the people who
help to make TBH a family and our
building a home. Please join me in say-
ing “Thank You” to Alyse Castonguay.

As a reminder, the following items should be provided for each oneg:
1 challah
3 baked goods (one gluten-free item)
Cheese and crackers
Fruit
White grape juice
Paper goods can be found on the rack in the kitchen. Wine is in the fridge.
**If you choose to make coffee and/or put out hot water for tea, all of the necessary supplies, i.e. sugar, coffee,
tea, cream, stirrers, cups, etc. are located on the rack in the kitchen. Hot water pots can be found to the left of
the sink. Please schedule everyone to arrive by 7:00 pm to set up the tables and pour the wine and grape juice.
Your team is also responsible to remain after services for clean up. There is a vacuum in the kitchen if it is
needed. Additionally, all garbage bags that may contain food should be tied off and thrown in the dumpster. We
need your help since the janitorial service does not clean the kitchen after an Oneg.
NOTE: We are creating the July 2015-June 2016 Oneg list. Please call or email the office with your
choice of dates and if there are specific families you would like to work with.

A few reminders from the Development Committee:
The Temple’s scrip gift card program is still underway as always. Stop & Shop, Big Y, and ShopRite and it
is always available during Temple office hours and we will resume sales at the end of Sunday school.
Coupon books – We still have a few Entertainment Books and plenty of Taste Books available for $25.00
each. Remember they contain valuable coupons to local and regional dining, grocery, retail, and entertain-
ment establishments (including Big Y and ShopRite coupons)!
I am still looking for volunteers to join the Development Committee. There are other fundraising ideas we
would like to explore, but your help in needed. If you are interested, please call or email me (contact infor-
mation listed below).

Hi! My name is Jacob Chaimovitch and I am becoming a Bar Mitzvah on May 30th, 2015. I have chosen to
partner with Crayons for Cancer for my Bar Mitzvah project. I will be holding a crayon party, at which we will
be sorting and breaking down crayons to be melted into fun shapes that are then sold to raise money for the
families of cancer victims. The crayon party will be on Sunday, March 8 at 12pm. I am looking for donations of old and broken crayons for the party and people to help out at the party to prepare crayons to be melted and remolded.
As part of my project, I will also be holding a cookie sale in order to raise money to buy crayons and coloring
books to donate to the kids at Connecticut Children's Medical Center. The cookie sale will also be on March
8th during and after Sunday School (8:45am-12:30pm). Please stop by and buy a cookie to help support my pro-
ject. I will also be accepting donations new coloring books.
Thanks!
BA R M I TZVAH PRO J ECT
Ki Tisa- Exodus 30:11-34:35 —The portion begins with instructions for taking a census, finishes up
the instructions for making the Tabernacle, reiterates the commandment of Shabbat and then pro-
ceeds to tell the story of the golden calf. The majority of Ki Tisa is concerned with the sin of the gold-
en calf, the breach in the covenant between G-d and Israel, and how Moses undertakes to restore
that covenant relationship.
Vayak'heil/P’kudei - Exodus 35:1-40:38 —These portions from the Torah describe how the assem-
bly of Israel worked together to build the Tabernacle and an audit of how the contributions for the
Tabernacle were used. It goes on to describe the completion of the Tabernacle and its assembly.
Vayikra— Leviticus 1:1-5:26 —Leviticus describes the sacrificial service and the duties of the
priests. It also introduces ritual purity, the biblical diet, the calendar of appointed times, laws of ho-
liness and laws relating to redemption, vows and tithes. In addition, Leviticus discourses on ethical
instruction and holiness. This portion introduces the sacrificial service and describes five different
types of sacrifices.
Tzav - Leviticus 6:1-8:36 —Tzav reiterates the five types of sacrifices introduced in the previous
portion but this time discusses the priestly regulations pertaining to them. The last chapter of the
reading describes the seven-day ordination of Aaron and his sons as they prepared to enter the holy
priesthood.

AU G U ST 2016 ISRA EL TR I P
The next TBH mission to Israel will be a crazy fun family experience. Summer in
Israel is hot, but beautiful. From August 8 to August 18, 2016, we will find all of the
amazing spots in Israel to jump in and cool off. This visit will be customized accord-
ing to our participants, and the goal is to offer a 'reasonably' priced trip.
If you have a simcha that you would like to celebrate in Israel, let us know, and we
are happy to make the arrangements. Mindy Glickman is currently finalizing the
itinerary and pricing. Please let her know if you are interested.

Good Morning Temple Beth Hillel!!! Hope you are enjoying this beautiful winter.
Warm and cozy inside around the fire and no need to go out. Not very long ago, on
Martin Luther King Jr. day, when the weather was still bearable, Beth Hillel made
their annual Shema Tour in his honor.
It was a wonderful and informative and delicious outing. We went first to the East-
er Seals site where we met with Mr. Mark Papugua the head of the outreach pro-
gram to handicapped people so that they may become a more integrated part of the
community. He gave us a tour of the facility and the people at work. It was most
gratifying to meet the clients who were working at assembling small tools. And for
which they were paid. We were invited to participate in the work, which we did. The
clients loved having the company and we loved interacting with them.
Next we went on to see Food Share. What huge and active facility. They are manned
95 percent by volunteers. It was impressive. But the most impressive was trying to
feed a family on the stipend of $4.16 per person per day in food stamps, which is the
usual allotment. We had to work out a budget with actual food prices, and those of
us who tried found it impossible to formulate a healthy and a balanced diet. It was
an indelible lesson.
The third place we went is the only mikvah in West Hartford. It is located in a pri-
vate residence which fits right in as the other single family homes which line the
street. It would not be noticed at all unless that were your destination. We were
greeted by the Rebbitzen who explained to us the purpose of the mikvah, who uses
it and when. And then gave us a tour of the facility. It was pristine clean, the towels
and robes were all fluffy white, and very inviting. Many of us had never seen or been
in a mikvah, so much of the information was new and surprising.
And along the way we stopped for lunch and that too was outstanding.
Well now comes the decision. Every year we choose which is the organization that
we will support. It’s not an easy task. Everyone of them deserves our support. At the
meeting, we made the decision to support Easter Seals. They are obviously short of
chairs where the workers sit for hours at a time, many of them handicapped. Just
seeing their joy in working and being in a social situation was inspiring. They asked
for chairs, with padded seats, and of sturdy condition. If anyone has any chairs

which could be used - they don’t have to match, but they must be sturdy - it would
be doing a real mitzvah. If you have any chairs that you no longer need, they do.
We will pick up gladly, just call.
We are also asking for those sample, individually packaged toiletries which we
have all collected to use one day and haven’t. Well here is the perfect recipient—the
Mikvah. They want them and can use them. Just one prohibition— no conditioners.

Will Spring ever be here? Will we ever be rid of these huge piles of snow? It
seems like it wasn’t that long ago when the Purim Carnival included kids run-
ning around outside! Well, that won’t happen this year (unless their costumes
include snow pants), but we still have a lot to look forward to. The Open House
organized by the Membership Committee gives us a great opportunity to put our
best foot forward to new, potential members. We hope you will join us in clean-
ing the temple and making the attendees feel as welcome as possible. It may be
cold outside, but the love and warmth just keep on coming here at TBH!
