4.2 Next CHC Landmark Research Project
A) Energy Roadmap for the Connected Home: This research would address the challenges and opportunities surrounding the need for more energy efficient homes. Topics that may be covered, include: renewables, battery storage including EVs, role of IoT devices, micro & nano-grids, efficient technologies and solutions, the role of utilities & energy pricing, integration, energy policy, funding and incentives, energy management systems, smart grid and alternative sources of energy etc.
B) Use Cases for Connected Home: This research would examine the many Connected Home use cases that are driving the adoption in this sector, such as: home comfort, lighting, ageing in place & the senior market, smart appliances and connected car, etc. A broad range of use cases will be analyzed leading to a deeper dive into a sub-set of use cases selected by the project Steering Committee.
C) Connected Home Roadmap and Immersive Technologies: This research will address all the mainstream aspects of the connected home marketplace with particular focus on the “hot topic” area of immersive technologies, such as voice recognition, and the analysis of home automation platforms (Homekit, Thread & other IoT platforms). It will provide insights into consumer attitudes concerning technologies, value propositions and future market adoption.

PRELIMINARY NOTES from 9/9 interview:
- 1.3 Billion miles per year on Fedex freight vehicles, 900M of which on class 8
tractor/trailers.
- Fedex freight fleet consists of 15000 tractors, 500 yard mules servicing 356 service
centers
- Freight is different entity than express/delivery (independent franchisees with 40 –
50k vehicles), introduction to express contacts for interview pending
- Active adopter of ADAS and telematics technologies in fleet, impact of ‘legacy’
investments on adoption of AV not deemed to be an issue
- Three primary drivers of customer satisfaction are reliability, interaction with driver,
problem resolution (by the driver)
- Investments in autonomous vehicle technologies expected to yield improvements in
safety (25 – 50% improvement), fuel efficiency, maintenance
- Efficiency a primary ‘metric-able’ benefit. Currently driver behavior impacts 20 – 25%
of fuel efficiency
- Implementing autonomous vehicle technologies is NOT expected to eliminate a driver,
rather driver time expected to be used for: more engagement with customers, active
analytics of vehicle, problem resolution of customer issues
- Described initial implementation of AV continuing in limited access environments (e.g.
on existing ‘hostler’ mule trucks in transfer yards
- Described next-generation implementation of AV in conditional uses (e.g. in
dynamic/temporary environments like construction zones on existing highways, or in
presence of new-to-driver traffic controls like lane merges or speed signs)
- Expects investments in and deployment of ‘air traffic control’ solutions for fleets
regardless of ability of AV to operate without V:I or V:V interaction.

PRELIMINARY NOTES from 8/24 interview:
- Represents concerns of local businesses in Georgetown planning initiatives
- Georgetown is 1 of 4 federally designated historic districts, creating significant
limitations on infrastructure development “…it’s hard to do any new transit solutions
that are ‘visible’…”
- Not served by Metro, city is surrounded on 3 sides by National Park Service lands
which creates significant challenges in getting employees and tourists in/out/through
Georgetown
- Participated in development of Washington DC legislation/guidelines to facilitate
introduction of autonomous vehicles
- Sees organic (citizen-defined) behavior as important signals in developing/formalizing
solutions (specific mention of slug lines and casual carpooling creating ad hoc pickup
spots that eventually were incorporated into planning activities)
- Primary (stated) concerns center around
- Safety (pedestrian, passenger)
- Traffic volume
- Access to transportation (e.g. those unable to drive)
- Secondary (stated) concerns
- Creating economic opportunities (autonomous vehicles reduces curb lane
congestion…which might increase sidewalk area available for restaurant use)
- Reducing business costs/risks (parking for employees, nighttime commuting)
- ‘Smart’ infrastructure investment (“…any new construction means
incorporating underground parking at $60k per spot, which needs to be
recouped somehow…”)
- POV that vaccine-insuring model is appropriate for autonomous vehicles (portion of
cost-per-mile goes to an administered fund for claims)

AVA Global Longitudinal Research Pilot Start of work: Week of 8/22 Close of work: 12/18 Budget: $ Intent: - Explore and understand consumer perceptions (+/-) around autonomous vehicles. - Explore current and ongoing conversations happening in social media by region. - Leveraging social media input create a pilot template of questions that can be
tracked quantitatively. - Gauge the consumers willingness to adopt autonomous vehicles over time. - Allow regional differences to be tracked and monitored. - Leverage pilot outcomes to create ongoing quantitative survey.
Suggested approach: - Mine social media by region US, Europe, Asia and South America - Leverage current conversations happening in social media to create a template of
questions to pilot globally - Refine survey questions based on pilot findings for ongoing longitudinal research. - Address regional differences in final survey make up. - Provide summary and detail findings for AVA membership:
- Executive Summary (format and detail TBD) - Full report for each country (format and detail TBD)
