CongregationMappingApplicationUSCCenterforReligionandCivicCultureUSCSpatialSciencesInstituteAbouttheMappingApplicationApps,mobiledevices,onlinemaps,andcloud-basedserviceshavebecomefamiliartools.Tocreateourcongregationmappingapplication,weusedGeographicInformationScience(GIS)softwaretointegratetheseproductsandgatherspatialandtabulardata.Allofthesetechnologiesarecontinuallyevolving.Weexplainourprojectandtheprocessweusedtobuilditinmore-generaltechnicaltermssothatitwillcontinuetoapplytowhatotherswouldliketoaccomplish.Weincludelinkstorelevantwebsitesandencourageotherstoexplorenewpossibilitiestocollect,display,andshareinformationaboutreligiouscongregationsandothercommunityorganizations.Atouch-responsivemapinterfaceisusedtoplotthefieldlocation,usingasmartphone,iPad,tablet,orotherGPS-enabledmobiledevice.Surveydataareenteredintospecificfieldsinaform-basedwindow;wecollectedmanydifferenttypesofdata,includinginformationaboutoutreachandcommunity-serviceprograms,timesofdayforreligiousservices,whenthecongregationwasestablished,andobservationsabouttheneighborhood.Photosorvideostakenwiththedevice’scameraorfromothersourcescanbeattachedtoanindividualrecord,andallinformationassociatedwithagivensiteisuploaded.Clickingonthepointicondisplayedonthemapaccessestherelateddata.Datastoredinageodatabaseonaserveroronlineareeasilyintegratedintoanorganization’sGIS.Informationaboutasitecanalsobeupdatedorinputofflinebytappingonthemap,andsynchinglater.Datacanbeexploredwithgeospatialanalysistools;downloadedforuseinquantitativeorqualitativeanalyses;orsharedinmanyways,includinginonlinevisualizationslikeStoryMapsthatincorporatemaps,text,andimages.

withinmanydifferentapps.GeneralInstructionsfortheMappingApplicationAswithanyresearchendeavor,weconsideredourproposeddataanalysisandtheendproductsdesiredbeforedeterminingthetypesofdatatobecollectedandconfiguringthemappingappdatabase.WeusedEsriArcMap,ArcCatalog,andArcGISforServerinthispartofourworkflow.First,createageodatabaseworkspaceandapointfeatureclass.Createdomains(organizedlists)next,whichmakedatacollectionmoreefficient,butarenotmandatory.Our“Tradition”field,forexample,hasadrop-downlistofvariousdenominations,including“Protestant,”“Catholic,”“Buddhist,”“Muslim,”“Other,”andseveralmore.Enablefeatureclassattachments(wecapturedphotos;videosarepossiblebutfilesizescanbelarge)tobeadded,andaddthefeatureclasstoablankmap.Then,publishthefeatureclassasahostedfeatureservicefromthemap,ensuringthattheserviceissharedwiththeintendedaudience(weselected“MyOrganization”).WeusedArcGISOnlinetoconfigureandpublishawebmaptocompleteourCollectorforArcGISapp.OpenArcGISOnlineandsignin.Check“MyContent”toverifythattheservicehasbeenpublishedandissharedwithin“MyOrganization.”Createa“Group”withintheorganization;groupsallowdatasharingwitharesearchteamorlimitedsubsetofpeople.CreateawebmapinArcGISOnline:clickMaptoopenanewmap,searchforLayerstofindthenewfeatureservice,andaddthefeatureservicetothemap.Symbolizedatapointsasdesiredusingthetableofcontents(legend)atthelefttoaccessthesymbols;trydifferentcolorsorsymbols.ManybasemapsareavailableinArcGISOnline;differentstylesincludestreetsdata,whichwefoundusefulformappingreligiouscongregationsandcommunityorganizations.SaveMap.ClickSaveAs:addatitle,tags,andadescriptionforthemap.Zoomthemaptowhereitshouldopen–perhapsinaspecificpartofyourcommunity–andSaveMap.ClickShare;checkoffMyOrganization,MembersoftheseGroups,and

IntheArcGISOnlinewebmap(left),congregationpointsareeditabledatainahostedfeatureservice.Thewebmapisthen“consumed”withintheCollectorforArcGISapp(right),whichusesthewebmaptoallowmorefeaturestobecollected.Tooliconsonthetopbarallowfortheadditionofpoints,zooming,andmore.ThesamewebmapcouldbeusedinaStoryMap,orinanothertypeofwebapp.Thesamehostedfeatureservicecouldbeaddedtoadifferentmap,onlineoroffline.EachwebmapandfeatureservicehasanindividualURL;thisuniqueidentifierallowsthemtobereferencedbyotherapplicationsandthenintegratedindifferentways.

Tousethemobiledeviceapp,tapontheCollectorforArcGISicon.Afteritloads,signintoanArcGISOnlineorganizationalaccount(left).Atoolbarandoneormoremapswillthendisplay(right).Selectthemapforyourspecificdatagatheringeffort;Collectorsupportsmultipleprojects.Awarningisshownifastrong-enoughGPS-signalcannotbeacquired;insideabuilding,forexample.Oncethemaploads,thetoolbarchanges(left).Clickonthecircletoshowyourlocation.Zoomandpanappropriatelytoyourlocation.Clickonthecrosshairstoplotapoint.Whenadatapointhasbeencaptured,“Location”indicatesthegeographicalcoordinates(latitude,longitude).Adata-collectionscreencannowbeaccessed(right).Tooliconsnowincludesettings,photocollection,SubmitandCanceloptions.Clickonthearrowattherighttoenterinformation.Fieldnamesandbehaviorareassetupinitiallyinyourgeodatabase;it’sagoodideatotestyourappandmakechangesbasedontrials.AsurveyID(weusedsurveyor’slastname,date,and24-hourtime)isausefulfield,althoughthegeodatabaseshouldalsobesetuptoautomaticallygenerateaGUID–globalID).Fieldswithlistsbasedondomainsareusefultoenterdataonsmallscreens.Oneormoreopen-endedtextfieldsareimportant.

GeneralInstructionsforStoryMapAppsEsriStoryMapapps(http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/)canintegratealldatatypescollectedwiththeCollectormappingapp,anddisplayitinawaythatencouragesotherstoexploretheinformationinanintuitivemanner–whetherthat’stoselectlocationsbecauseanimageintriguesthem,orbypanningorzoomingwithinthemaptodiscoversomeplacenew,orbyfindingafamiliarlocation,ortoclickthe“Details”linkonthepopupboxtofindmoredata,includinglinkstocongregations’websitesoradditionalvideoclips.StoryMapsaccessyourimagesandrawdata,downloadedfromyourgeodatabase.Imagesformattedtospecificsizesanduploadedareusedinpopupsandthumbnails.Dataformattedtoincorporatewithinpopupsasdesiredissavedasacsvfilewithonerecordforeachlocation,andaddedtoanewwebmap–ortheexistingwebmapcouldbere-purposed.TheStoryMaptemplatecodepullsthepiecestogether.Explorevarioustemplatestoselecttheonethatworksbestforyoursituation.Weuse“Shortlist.”TheShortlistapp(http://storymaps.arcgis.com/en/app-list/shortlist)hasbeenavailableasaconfigurableappthatcouldonlybedeployedbydownloadingtheapporthecode,andthenhostingitonyourownserverorwebsite.Weusethisoption,whichprovidesmorecontroloverappearanceandcontent.Anotheroptionisthedeveloper-friendlysourcecodeavailableonGitHub.ThenewestandeasiestShortlistoptionistocreatetheStoryMapusingthetemplatewithinArcGISOnline,whichincludesaninteractivedrag-and-dropappbuilder.GivenShortlist’spopularity,itislikelythisfeaturewillbewellsupported.Ingeneral,appsareeitherconfigured,extended,ordeveloped,dependingontheamountoftimeonecanspend,thelevelofcustomizationdesired,andtheskilllevelofthecreator.Newertemplatesavailablefordownloadallow“configuredoff-the-shelf”appsorthosemodifiedonlyslightlytoquicklylookpolishedandprofessional.
