Don’t Stand By:Sir Nicholas Winton Remembered
With ‘Winton Child,’ Eva Paddock
Hosted by Congregation B’nai Shalom117 E. Main Street, Westborough, MA
Sir Nicholas Winton was a young stockbroker, aged 29, when he traveled
to Prague at the request of a friend to witness the 200,000 refugees
there who were escaping the war.
In an incredible act of determination and compassion, Sir Nicholas Winton managed to find homes in the UK for 669 children and arranged for their transportation to safety. His story was not told publicly until 1988, when a British television host, Esther Rantzen, learned of Winton, and found a great many of the children that he had saved. Eva (Fleishmann) Paddock was one of those children. She will share her incredible story as we remember Nicholas Winton, who died in 2015 at the age of 106.

I’m excited to be able to share with the congregation a grant award for a very special oppor-
tunity for the 2016–2017 congre-gational year. We are one of ten congregations in the United States who have been selected for a grant-supported Scientists in Synagogues program. Before I tell you a little more about the program, here is some background information.
Over the past couple of years, a colleague of mine from CLAL’s (The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership) Rabbis Without Borders program (of which I am a Fellow from the founding cohort), Rabbi Geoff Mitelman, has been incubating an organiza-tion called Sinai and Synapses. His basic premise was that many people believe that there is a fundamental opposition between science and
religion, often reinforced by the statements of those who tend to ascribe to more fundamentalist Christian backgrounds. However, this has never been the case with Judaism and, in fact, both science and religion provide different but complimentary tools to help us understand our world and our place in it. Rabbi Mitelman’s mission is to help people see the world in a way that is “scientifically grounded and spiritually uplifting.” You can read more about his organization at http://sinaiandsynapses.org.
More specifically, Rabbi Mitel-man describes the goals of Scientists in Synagogues as follows: Scientists in Synagogues is a grass-roots pro-gram to offer Jews opportunities to explore the most interesting and pressing questions surrounding Judaism and science. Its aim is to
share how some of the most thought-ful Jewish scien-tists integrate their Judaism and their scientific work so that they can be role models and ambassadors for productive conver-sations surrounding Judaism and science.
Ten congregations, representing all different Jewish denominations, have been selected from over forty applications, as the first cohort of communities to develop a Scien-tists in Synagogues program. It is a great honor for Congregation B’nai Shalom to be included among them. Only four places were available for congregations that were not in the New York City or Washington D.C. areas. I believe that our applica-

From Our President
As I approach the end of my term as temple President on May 31, I’d like to
express what an honor it has been to serve in this role for the past two years. It’s been a great pleasure to work closely with Rabbi Gurevitz, Rabbi Joe, Abby Mayou, Steve Winer, and the entire staff at CBS. I’ve been able to observe up close the talent, dedication, and innova-tion that all of them bring to their work. Our congregation is very fortunate to have such extraordinary spiritual, educational, administra-tive, and musical leaders.
I’m also extremely grateful for the opportunity to have worked with so many wonderful lay leaders and
volunteers. CBS has an amazing network of people who carry out the work of the congregation and are the bedrock of our active and vibrant community. I’m personally thankful to everyone who so will-ingly and readily stepped up to help when called upon. I’ve been truly overwhelmed by the support and generosity I’ve encountered.
I could not be more pleased to pass the baton to our incoming President, Allison Orenstein. Alli-son has served as a member of the Board of Directors, Co-Chair of the Personnel Committee, and recently, on the Administrator Search Com-mittee. She brings new energy and ideas, as well as a warm and compas-
sionate nature to the position. I also welcome those people who will join the Board of Direc-tors this spring, and appreciate those continuing on in their current positions.
Finally, I’m grateful to all of my fellow congregants for making CBS a community that I’m happy and proud to belong to.

Congregation B’nai Shalom Celebrates Shavuot, Saturday, June 11
Confirmation Class Prepares Creative Service
Shavuot has always been one of the most important days in the Jewish calendar. In
earliest times, it was an agricultural holiday in honor of the harvest. Dur-ing the centuries that the Temple stood in Jerusalem, Shavuot became a pilgrimage festival along with Suk-kot and Pesach. These three Holy Days are called the Shalosh Regalim and were occasions of special offer-ings and worship.
After the destruction of the Sec-ond Temple (70 C.E.) Shavuot took on a new interpretation. It became known as Zeman Mattan Toratenu, the Anniversary of the Giving of our Torah. The ancient Rabbis focused on a second meaning of the word Shavuot, that of “oaths,” especially
the oath of the Jewish People to uphold the covenant sworn at Mount Sinai. To uphold that sacred oath, it is appropriate, therefore, that we have chosen the occasion of Shavuot to celebrate the academic achievements of our 10th grade Confirmation Class. Our congrega-tion will celebrate Confirmation on the eve of Shavuot on Saturday, June 11 at 7:00 pm. The Confirma-tion/Shavuot creative service will be led by our confirmands and will be followed by an Oneg Chag provided by the parents of our 9th grade class in honor of our 10th graders.
Welcoming our confirmands into the congregation is an inspir-ing moment not only for friends and family, but for all members of
Congregation B’nai Shalom. Just as our ancestors presented their first fruits at the Temple on Shavuot, the members of the Confirmation class present themselves as Jews ready to affirm their adult religious commit-ments. The tradition of Confirma-tion is a unique expression of our Reform heritage. We look forward to celebrating Shavuot with you!

From Our Family Educator
It’s hard to believe that the school year is almost over. I am sending huge thank you’s to all of
our Shoresh (K–1) and Gezah (2–3) families who donated food items and volunteered their time to make our Model Seder a huge success on April 10, as well as a super special todah rabah to Beth Spiegel for all of her time, effort, and energy in
preparing for this event. Our 2/3 WAFTY wrapped up their year with an event at Teamworks in Northbor-ough. We had a blast with our own private party complete with sports, inflatables, arcade games, cake, and goodie bags.
In closing, I would also like to sent a huge mazel tov shoutout to all of our graduating seniors and
madrichim. Wishing all of you happiness, health and success as you move for-ward in pursuit of your own dreams, ambitions and endeavors.

tion was successful because of the process by which we developed our application, and the incredible resources we have on our doorstep in the Sci-Tech corridor that runs between Boston and Worcester.
Back in January I wrote to over a hundred congregants who had been identified through our mem-bership database (which is not as complete as we would like it to be) who were involved in some kind of medical, technological, or scientific profession. Over thirty-five people responded indicating their interest in helping to support or shape a new program for our congregation. Fif-teen of those were available to attend a one-time brainstorming meeting. The results of that meeting were sev-eral broad themes that would lend themselves to exploration from both a scientific and Jewish perspective (whether that be drawing on our
ethical traditions, historical experi-ences, or philosophy). We decided to focus on technological change, and how it is reshaping community and communication and redefining the human experience.
We will be taking some time over the coming months, working in small project teams, to firm up the plans for next year. The grant will enable us to bring in at least one expert speaker, but our initial brain-storm meetings also included ideas for a congregational TedX-style program, with short presentations and community discussion, a Chai school elective that will introduce our teens to members of our con-gregation doing innovative work in these areas, video-conferencing with innovators in Israel, and more.
If you would like to be kept informed of opportunities to shape these programs with us, are working
on something professionally that might lend itself to a TedX-style pre-sentation or a one-hour Chai school class, or have connections with people and projects that we could highlight, please be in touch with me. It feels very much in the spirit of innovation and crowd-sourcing new ideas to be creating this new avenue for congregational life-long learning in such close partnership with our membership. I hope you’ll be a part of it!

From the Rabbi’s Study – continued from page 3
Jewish overnight summer camp is one of the best experi-ences parents can give to their
children. Not only do they get all the benefits of overnight camp, such as making lifelong friends, gaining independence, and adapting to life away at college more easily, but they also gain a unique Jewish experience that will strengthen their connec-tions to Judaism now and will carry through to when they are adults and have children and grandchildren of their own to send to camp.
Often I hear that as much as parents would like to send their children to camp, it is just not in the budget. Congregation B’nai Sha-lom does offer camp scholarships through our Steve Meltzer Camp Scholarship Fund to help families
who choose to send their children to one of our URJ camps or on a NFTY in Israel program.
However, this fund has been shrinking. I am writing to you, our members, to ask you for your sup-port. You can help raise money for this important fund in several ways.
You can support the annual fun-draising that the Youth Committee does, such as the hamentashen sales and other holiday fundraisers. I am truly appreciative of the hard work of our Youth Committee.
You can register your Stop & Shop card with their A+ Rewards Program for Congregation B’nai Shalom to receive money each time you go food shopping there. You can register it at https://stopandshop.com/aplus/register-card/.
You can choose to make direct donations to the Steve Meltzer Camp Scholarship Fund. Had it not been for the generous donation of one of our members, we would not have been able to give out as many scholarships as we did this year. If you are looking to make a dona-tion in honor of or in memory of someone, or if you are simply looking to contribute to a worthy cause, please consider the Steve Meltzer Camp Scholarship Fund.

Sisterhood-Sponsored Book Group On Thursday, June 2
We will discuss The Mathematician’s Shiva by Stuart Rojstaczer. Rachela, a Jewish émigré from Poland and the greatest female mathematician in history, passes away. She is reputed to have solved one of the most difficult problems in all of mathematics and has taken the solution with her. A ragtag group of mathematicians descend upon her shiva in Madison, Wisconsin, determined to find the proof. Reviewers call the novel hilarious and witty. Capturing the essence of Rachela’s long and dramatic life, the story illuminates humanity’s need not just to survive, but to achieve the impossible. This book won the Jewish Book Council’s 2014 award for Best Debut Novel. For more information, contact Barbara Barry at [email protected].

Brotherhood News – Fall BBQ to Replace End-of-Year BBQ
The CBS Brotherhood extends its sincere thanks to temple member Marile Bor-
den, our guest speaker at our March 20 breakfast. Marile, owner of Metal Creative Services, a full-services marketing communications firm and a social media expert, spoke on the topic of “The Who, the What, and the WHY of Social Media.” I think we all left with a bit more knowledge of the role social media plays today in both our personal and our busi-ness lives.
Thanks also go to Steve Winer, who conceived, organized, and led a fantastic Brotherhood trip to
New York on April 3. Thirteen men made the trek from Westborough to the Big Apple by “luxury” van, where we ate our way through some of New York’s best bagel, knish, and pastrami restaurants. Along the way, we visited and toured the Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side, where we learned about the lives of Jewish immigrants in the early 20th century. The highlight for most of us was our visit to Ground Zero and the recently opened World Trade Center Memorial Museum.
Next month, we’ll recap the Brotherhood-sponsored Shabbat service, congregational dinner, and
speaker that took place on April 15, and thank the many volunteers who made this event possible.
One last programming note: unlike previous years, there will not be and “end-of-the-year” Com-munity BBQ on the last day of Religious School this year; instead, we will start a new tradition with a “Welcome Back” BBQ at the begin-ning of the school year in Septem-ber. Please watch this Bulletin space for more details towards the end of the summer.

Yad b’YadCare Coordinators Needed
Spring is here and we’d like to thank all of our vol-unteers who helped others throughout a long winter. Thanks go to Bobbi Feinblatt who served as our April Care Coordinator. The Coordinator for the month of May will be Debbie Pickholtz. Others who have volun-teered their time in the past month are Janice Hirshon, Mike and Anita Backer, and Joel Feinblatt. For the last half of 2016 we have no Care Coordinators scheduled. This wonderful group could really use the help of some new people who are able to spend just a little bit of time helping fellow congregants in times of need. If you are able to help out, please contact us.

Northborough Meals – Next Meal on Wednesday, June 8 “We’re so glad your group is here tonight.” “You always have a great variety of delicious dishes.” “All the desserts were wonderful especially the chocolate ones.” We had sixty-five guests on Wednesday, March 16 and these were some of their many appreciative comments. We had lots of food. Many of our volunteers ate and some attendees took leftovers home. We were so happy to be able to give dishes to the people of the group home who attend regularly. We also dropped off food at the Veterans’ Shelter in Worcester the following morning. Our volunteers, including many new families, were ter-rific. Unfortunately Jonas was unable to attend, but our soloist Bill entertained us singing beautiful selections.

A Note from the Federman Family
To the members of Congregation B’nai Shalom:We would like to thank the entire community at
Congregation B’nai Shalom for the outpouring of support and assistance that we received following the passing of Michael Federman last· month. It was deeply moving to hear from so many people, from long-time friends who remembered him from the earliest days of the congregation’s establishment, to those who knew him more recently from his years of blowing the shofar on the High Holy Days or his work on the Rabbi Search Committee. We would like to add a special thank you to Rabbi Gurevitz for arranging such a thoughtful and moving memorial service, and to the selfless volunteers of Yad b’Yad who provided so much help and comfort during the difficult days of the shiva. We are fortunate to be members of such a warm and caring community and know that Michael would have been proud to know that his efforts forty years ago would help build something so special.
Sincerely,Toby, Josef, Aaron, and Daniel Federman

Members in the News:Grafton school serves as model for Chinese educators
Mazal Tov to Sarah Kipp-McGowan for creating a connection between the Touchstone Community School and Chinese educators. (The following contains content from the The Tele-gram and Gazette of April 2.) Grace, 12 years old at the time, attended the October 2014 talk at B’nai Shalom by Shlomo Maital, an author and professor of executive leadership development at Technion University in Israel. The talk focused on creativ-ity, resilience, and innovation, which
is akin to the educational philoso-phy and approach at Touchstone. Grace later invited him to visit the Touchstone Community School in Grafton. Mr. Maital accepted Grace’s invitation. The following year, the professor shared what he had learned about TCS with graduate students at Shantou University in China, where he is a visiting professor. Two of the graduate students and their 3-year-old daughter visited Touchstone with Mr. Maital last October, filming and
interviewing teachers and students. Ms. Diller (heaad of TCS) said the Chinese couple and the professor used their visits to springboard a new school in China based on Touch-stone. They plan to start with pre-kindergarten and add a grade each year. Some teachers from Touchstone plan to travel to China this summer or in the fall to train teachers there. Opening my eyes – the Mass Coalition for the Homeless Legislative Action Day
Emma Fellenbaum 9th grade, Chai School
Imagine living alone in a small apartment, working hard, and preparing for the birth of
your first child. Imagine a pipe bursting, forcing you to leave. Imag-ine your landlord then not letting you come back, evicting you, and leaving you without a home. Nikia Ramsey didn’t have to imagine any of this — sadly, it all happened to her. Nikia’s story was one of many told at the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless Legislative Action Day at the State House. These sto-ries affected me deeply, and made me realize how little I know about homelessness. In suburban towns like the ones surrounding CBS, homelessness seems worlds away. In
reality, it’s not. This event taught me more about homelessness locally, and the bills that the Coalition is striving to get passed to improve the lives of homeless people. Previ-ously, I had no idea that people in the EAEDC (Emergency Aid for the Elderly, Disabled, and Children) program without homes receive less than $93 per month to live on. This amount has not increased for nearly thirty years, while prices of housing and other necessities have skyrocketed. I also had no idea that families couldn’t qualify for EA (Emergency Assistance) shelter unless they stayed in a place “not fit for human habitation for twenty-four hours.” “Not fit for human habitation” means somewhere like a car, or a train or bus station. Not only do families with children
have to stay in unsafe places, they also have to prove that they stayed there. Families have been refused shelter if they couldn’t provide this proof. This is unacceptable, and it’s frustrating that many people don’t know that this happens. We need to do something to change this, and to act as a congregation to help people experiencing homeless.
Congregation B’nai Shalom’s Social Action activities focus on addressing homelessness — we invite you to join us. For more informa-tion, please contact Social Action Committee co-chairs Amy Rosen-berg ([email protected], 781.307.7093) or Chris Senie ([email protected]).

Andrew Moore is celebrating his Bar Mitzvah on May 7, 2016. Andrew was born on March 15, 2003 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to parents Ivan Moore and Marna Bronfen-Moore. He is also the big brother to Carter Moore, age 8. Andrew attends seventh grade at Hopkinton Middle School and enjoys playing ice hockey, soccer, and tennis. Andrew participates in several charities including Save the Children (we have a sponsored child named Nahid, age 12), Project Just Because, and he pledged $1200 after coordinating a “Run for Haiti” after the devastating earthquake in 2010 kill-ing approximately 160,000 people. Andrew’s favorite mitzvah this year was collecting items for Project Just Because, a local charity dedicated to helping families in need. His hard work contributed to the donation of over 1800 items to the project. Andrew’s family is very proud of him and looking forward to his special day. Jacob Baer becomes a Bar Mitzvah on May 14, 2016. Jacob lives in Westborough and is the son of Robin and Jonathan Baer, and has a younger brother Aiden, age 6. Jacob is in the seventh grade at the Bancroft School in Worcester. In his free time Jacob enjoys playing football, lacrosse, basketball, and also enjoys snowboarding.
Sam Schiffman becomes a Bar Mitzvah on May 28, 2016. Sam is the son of Wendy and Michael Wilsker and Rick and Lauren Schiffman. Sam has four siblings, Ben Schiffman, age 5, Will Schiffman, age 15, Gavin Wilsker, age 19, and Gabby Wilsker, age 21. Sam lives in Westbor-ough and is in the seventh grade at the Gibbons Middle School. In his free time Sam enjoys hockey, golf, bas-ketball, and fishing. Sam spends his summers at Camp Sewataro. Sam has played hockey for Triboro Youth Hockey Association for the past six years and played hockey for the Westborough Middle School team.
