Dear Friends,

Almost all of us love Passover, and yet we know that this night will be different from other Passover nights. For some, there will be many empty chairs; cherished family members who are far away. For others, there will be the painful reality of loved ones who have died. And for everyone there will be a sense that this year enslaved us all in some way; to fear, anxiety, loneliness, and depression.

We will recite the famous line which reminds us that we, in every generation, should see ourselves as having been liberated from slavery. Through those words, we remember the past as if we were there. More than that, we are required to have empthy for those who still suffer from the various oppressions in the world.

We want to suggest that you recite the Passover story not only as a reminder of our past, but of transformative times in our own lives. The journey of our people leaving Egypt is a profound example of our resilience. The question, “Why is this night different from all other nights?” may take on new meaning this year as many of us will celebrate with just the people we live with or join family zoom seders on computer screens. However, we know, as past generations have shown us, that overcoming hard times is possible and that these challenging times shall too “pass over.”

We hope that you can use this holiday as a time to stop and reflect not only on the Exodus story as a narrative for our nation, but on our own emotional struggles and our desires for well-being. For the difficult days when we feel stuck in a metaphorical Egypt, we present this self-care Seder plate*, from the Blue Dove Foundation. It can offer some inner peace and healing. Just as the symbols on the Seder plate keep us engaged with the story of Passover, each of us has self-care tools that keep us engaged with our mental health. The more tools we have, the better prepared we are on days when we are struggling and the better equipped we are to help our loved ones. So, when you are at the seder table reflecting on the meaning of each item on the seder plate take some time to also explore and reflect on the multiple dimensions of your own health. Thank you for reading this. We hope it’s been helpful and please know that we are here for you. For information on local support services and resources, please contact Michele Scher.

Chag Kasher V’Sameach! May it be a meaningful, comforting, and happy Passover. And, may it inspire hope for the days and months ahead!

We send our love.

SELF-CARE SEDER PLATE

One thing I can do to help myself

calm down

One strength I have to help me get through this

One person who can support me when I need it

One place I can go to feel safe

and comfortable

One sign to alert me when I am struggling

One thing I will tell myself on a bad day

Shalom Friends,

Mah nishtanah ha-Pesach ha-zeh - how different this Passover is than others we have celebrated. That is what we said last year as we gathered for our first ever “Zoom Seders.” No one thought that soon we would be doing it again.

We have been through so much, as a congregation, a nation, a world, since last Passover. Deliverance from the plague of Covid has not happened with a sweeping miracle. Yet we have also learned and been inspired despite shattering losses. How to keep each other as safe as possible. The massive ingenuity of the scientific community that developed vaccines in record time. The stories of care, compassion, and comfort offered in difficult times number in the millions. The efforts of the truly indispensable workers, including mail carriers, sanitation professionals, supermarket employees and the heroes of the medical community including EMT’s, doctors, nurses and those who staff our hospitals. A nation’s gratitude should know no bounds.

And we have learned how a synagogue can stay connected, relying on technology, parking lot programs, safely distanced bar and bat

mitzvahs, small but beautiful weddings, outdoor baby namings and more. Jewish learning opportunities of excellent quality practically every day. We have seen Jewish professionals and educators, laypeople and volunteers alike partner in allowing Judaism to do what it does so well, which is to adapt to any circumstances in which we find ourselves. Good and bad, secure and vulnerable, generally healthy and in a pandemic too. We have learned from our past so that we know what to try in the present. It is the only pathway to a vibrant future.

Join our family (most of whom will be on Zoom!) in keeping in mind gratitude and perseverance, hope and memory at your Passover table. Saddened by loss and missed opportunities to celebrate, we are eternally optimistic that one day soon our sacred and special days and occasions will have us feeling “sameiach v’tov lev”, truly joyful, with full hearts.

Wishing you a Chag Sameach v’Kasher,

Rabbi David Englander

As we approach Passover, I am thinking about the themes of this holiday- redemption, freedom, creation, and rebirth - and how they relate to what we have been through as a nation and community over this past year. Passover is known as z’man heyruteinu, the season of our freedom. I am now looking forward to us celebrating freedom from the confinement we have all experienced over the last year.

Our team, in collaboration with our devoted Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), is working diligently to expand our safety measures and update our technology so we can return to our building as soon as it is safe to do so. We have installed specialized air purification systems in both the early childhood center and the synagogue. These purifying devices help in creating a healthy environment without any harmful byproducts. Our buildings also go through a thorough nightly cleaning process, using a botanical EPA-approved disinfectant via an electrostatic sprayer. We continue to be grateful to our dedicated MAC for their tireless guidance and support of this effort - Dr. Donald Heiman, a board-certified infectious diseases specialist and the medical director of the infection prevention programs at Boca Raton Regional and West Boca hospitals; Dr. Bryan J. Wasserman, M.D., FACP Internal Medicine - Geriatric Medicine; and Lisa Rosenfeld, MPH, a consultant with the Department of Health

Palm Beach County since 2009. Ms. Rosenfeld also served as the Planning Chief for the H1N1 influenza pandemic, and currently serves on the local HERC (healthcare emergency response coalition) with infection control specialists from the local hospitals, EMS, and emergency management.

There will be a world after we beat this virus and I know we are doing our part by remaining optimistic, following safety procedures, and looking toward a brighter tomorrow. And for today, we remain dedicated and have expanded our focus on community outreach. We initiated our “Baked With Love, Challot of Chesed” program, neighbors helping neighbors bring the joy of Shabbat to the home. B’nai Torah has also organized an outreach effort to assist seniors in getting vaccine information and appointments. A heartfelt thank you to all our extraordinary volunteers! I am so proud of our B’nai Torah family and all we have accomplished together.

I have a refreshed sense of hope as we enter this new season. I am excited for the day when we will all emerge, and walk freely together with our loved ones again, in celebration, joy, and gratitude.

Chag Pesach Sameach!

TLC@BTCThe Tzedakah, Learning and Chesed program at B’nai Torah has always been committed to helping meet the needs of those most vulnerable in our community and beyond. This year, with the pandemic causing more people to face hunger, homelessness and in need of critical care, our call to action has never been stronger. I’m so proud of our BTC community for stepping up heeding the call. Making sandwiches or challahs in your homes, stocking pantries with an abundance of food, volunteering to safely manage the shower program or feed the homeless - so many of you have given your time and effort to helping TLC. Here are some highlights of those who are making a difference:

Marilyn Pechter and her friends baked over 900 cookies for children in need. Marilyn loves to help and we love that she is engaging others!

The Berger Family and the Goby Family each made sandwiches to feed the most vulnerable in our community through the ‘Sandwich Sundays’ program. It is a safe way to make and get your children involved, while staying safe at home during the pandemic. Every week of the year, volunteers make approximately 5

dozen sandwiches and write inspirational notes for the recipients. To sign up, please contact me at [email protected].

In the last edition of the Chai, I wrote about the ‘Little Free Pantry’ program. There are currently 15 pantries in South Florida, 10 in Orlando and 1 in Mariana, Florida, and the program keeps growing! In fact, people from all over the country have contacted us to find out how they can offer a Little Free Pantry to their community.

Hopefully by now you’ve heard a lot about the ‘Mobile Shower’ program that we launched in February in partnership with St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church and Carebag, Inc. We are looking for volunteers who can help facilitate this program. If you’re interested, please contact Dalia Goby at [email protected].

Dear B’nai Torah Members,

Please save the date for our

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28, 2021 Drive-by voting begins at noon; Meeting begins at 7pm on Zoom

More details to follow.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

If I described the B’nai Torah Purim celebration to you as one where we had hundreds of people participate, we had live animals, stilt walkers, jugglers, food, photo booth and more – most would say what a fabulous event! But without the proper context, no one would guess that it was a CARnival – a drive-by celebration through our North parking lot. It was so much fun for all who participated!

We have come a long way in this past year of pandemic. We have learned to adapt to Zoom for services, classes, and holiday celebrations. Our daily minyanim have better attendance than ever before. So many congregants have written to me and the clergy on how the Zoom services enable them to feel so much closer as a community. In addition, Zoom has allowed so many people from outside Boca Raton to participate in our programs. Our snowbirds and others are still with us this season – even though they are participating from hundreds of miles away.

During the holiday of Pesach, we celebrate the freedom from slavery of our ancestors. One definition of “freedom” is to act without hindrance or restraint. Isn’t that what we have

done throughout this past year? We have achieved a unique kind of freedom as we have reinvented how we function as a synagogue – programs, services, fundraising and more. And the congregation has responded in such a positive manner! We owe so much to our clergy and dedicated staff for making all of this possible. And now we are planning how we return to the building. Going “back to the old way” is no longer an option. We need to find a way to accommodate those who are out of town, or in-town, but unable to come to the building.

I like to believe that a great congregation is one where the leadership and the congregants work hand-in-hand to chart the direction of the community. One cannot get too far ahead of the other – or it does not work.

I am so proud of our B’nai Torah family and how we have navigated the craziness of the past year. May we continue to go from strength to strength as we return to our building as a stronger and more vibrant congregation.

Chag Sameach

Ed Sopher

MATZAH TOPPINGS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Before topping matzah, place matzah in oven at 350 degrees for about 10-12 minutes,

to get it a bit more crispy and dry so it can hold the toppings well.

ITALIAN MATZAH: Spread matzah with a thin layer of

marinara, ¼ cup chopped olives and 1 Tbsp capers

and ¼ cup of shredded mozzarella. Bake at 350

degrees for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese melts.

Top with freshly torn basil.

FRENCH MATZAH: Spread matzah with a thin layer

of fig jam and top with sliced brie (about 3-4 pieces).

Bake at 350 degrees for about 8-10 minutes until

cheese is melted. In a separate bowl, toss together

1/2 cup or arugula and add a drizzle of olive oil, he

juice of 1 lemon, and salt and pepper. Toss well and

top salad onto matzah.

THAI MATZAH: In a small bowl, whisk together ¼

cup coconut milk, 2 Tbsp red curry paste and ¼

cup almond butter and spread a thin layer onto

matzo (you may have extra sauce). Then top with

shredded carrots, sliced cabbage, green onions,

cilantro, chopped roasted almonds, drizzle of

sriracha and lime wedges.

MEXICAN MATZAH: Spread a thin layer of roasted

tomato salsa on the matzah and top with an over

easy egg, dollop of tomatillo salsa, cilantro, sliced

HEALING AND REBUILDING TOGETHERJust recently, I had the opportunity to participate in The Jewish Song Leader Boot Camp facilitated by Rich Recht. I was very excited that it was a virtual conference, and I was able to attend. We studied sections of the book of Shmot. We focused on the Building of the Mishkan, and I began thinking about how relevant this is to our lives today.

As a people we have been through a lot. As slaves it certainly wasn’t a good life, but we went about our lives and knew what to expect. Then we were free. That was a very scary experience. It brought about a strong sense of uncertainty. So, we waited at the foot of Mt. Sinai for Moses to come down and give us a sign as to what to do. Because we were frightened, we looked to the familiar for comfort. We built a Golden Calf - a god to worship - to show us the way. Moses comes down to give us the 10 Commandments, but we learn that we have more work to do, and we are not yet ready to enter the Promised Land. After we wander through the desert, we build a Mishkan – a sanctuary for God. “Let them make Me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them.” (Exodus 25:8)

At Mt. Sinai we felt scared. It was a dark time. But then, with the building of the Mishkan, there came an opportunity to rise and rebuild. The Sanctuary

gave us a way to relearn and regain courage and commitment. Through the building of the Mishkan, we were really rebuilding ourselves.

God-willing soon we will once again come together in our Sanctuary. And together as a community we will heal and rebuild, leaning on each other to help re-kindle the light and diminish the darkness.

In the coming days we will participate in the Passover Seder. The significance of the Seder is to re-live the triumph of freedom from slavery. For many of us, the Seder will be like last year with fewer people sitting around the table and more computer screens connecting us to family and friends.

Times like these are some of the hardest to be apart. But, as we have learned over the course of generations, there is no separation or circumstance that can break the bond we share through our history, our tradition, and our faith.

L’Shana Haba’ah B’yachad Panim El Panim B’oto Makom. Next year may we be face to face, together in the same space.

AN ‘OUT OF THE BOX’ YEAR BRINGS MANY SILVER LININGS

When reflecting on the 2020-2021 school year, the first thing that comes to my mind is that there are many silver linings that have come our way. According to the dictionary, a silver lining is “an advantage that comes from a difficult or unpleasant situation.” The other thought is the term, out of the box. This is defined as “outside of or beyond what is considered usual, traditional or conventional”.

This school year has brought us so many out of the box activities and has created many silver linings. I would like to share just a few.

During a “normal” school year, our children and families would skip to the sanctuary each Friday morning to celebrate Shabbat. This year had to be different. We could never put over 200 people in one room during a pandemic. Instead, our children go to our back lawn where they are joined by our cantor and rabbis for a morning of Shabbat. We sing fun songs, tell stories from the Torah and experience the beauty of nature. When we are finished, the children return to their classroom for a Zoom Shabbat with their families. We have had grandparents join Shabbat from as far as South Africa and Israel. The silver linings are endless….

During a “normal” Thanksgiving, we would come together indoors for a Thanksgiving Feast with long tables. This year our children came together for a feast on the lawn. Turkey nuggets and all the fixings were served picnic style. When the children completed this event with full bellies, they joined together to collect donated food for families in need. Thirty homes received a full Thanksgiving dinner from our families. Life lessons were learned with the help of Summer Faerman from TLC. The silver linings are endless…

Hanukkah in the past was a day to sing songs on the bimah and nosh on Hanukkah treats. Once again, we came to the lawn and we sang and danced and of course we ate latkes and sufganiyot (donuts). But unlike years in the past, we learned that Hanukkah can be a time of giving and not only receiving. Our children participated in painting our very own TLC Giving Pantry. They learned about others who are hungry and were excited to bring in food to help. The life lessons continue as they fill the pantry each week. The silver linings are endless….

Purim! Purim is a holiday that children love. Back to the lawn! This year we paraded to the playground and had our Purim story telling out back. The children laughed and sang. They screamed as loud as they could (we could never scream that loud inside) when we said the name of Haman. Challah and Hamantaschen were on the menu along with snow cones. We had a petting zoo come with many animals. The day was joyous, outside and out of the box. The silver linings are endless…

Now I ask myself, would I want our school to go back to the way it was. The answer is no. These new out of the box events have brought so much joy to our children. The gratitude for all that we have been able to do is endless. Living and thinking out of the box is what we now need to do each day. I know for years to come, we will be grateful, we will think just a little differently, and yes, we will always look to do something new and out of the box. The result will be many more silver linings.

B’shalom,

NER TAMID SOCIETY B’nai Torah Foundation

* Of Blessed Memory

The prestigious Ner Tamid Society honors donors who have contributed a minimum of $100,000 to the B’nai Torah Foundation. This can be done through

a gift or through a charitable trust, life insurance policy, will, IRA or pension. Donors are acknowledged on the Ner Tamid recognition wall located in the front lobby of the synagogue. Create a Jewish Legacy through our Ner Tamid Society

and perpetuate Jewish life from Generation to Generation.

JO ROBBINSJo Robbin’s family has a long history with B’nai Torah. Her parents

helped start the congregation, and her father was instrumental in, what we lovingly refer to as, the ‘Miracle on 18th Street.’ To this day, Jo sits in the same row during services as her parents did. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the building when it is safe to do so, so she can carry on this tradition. Family continuity is important to Jo, and in that light, she has decided

to become B’nai Torah’s very first second-generation Ner Tamid member! What a mitzvah!

This tremendous gift of generosity was inspired during conversations with her dear friend, and ours, Ruth Taubman. When Jo moved here from Columbus, Ohio, they discussed following in her family’s footsteps, to support the community she lives in and ensure its Jewish future. Ner Tamid, the eternal light, is considered the symbol of God’s light in the world. Through mitzvot, compassion, and acts of loving kindness, we can help those around us and be the “light” for others.

Synagogue life has always been important to Jo’s family, dating back to when her grandfather led services in the early 1900s and had the important responsibility of polishing the silver Torah breastplate. Our services, and especially our choir, connect with Jo’s love for music. In her own words, “Coming to services defines my week. It defines my life.”

Jo is also an enthusiastic lifelong learner, exemplifying the significance of learning inherent in Judaism. Florence Melton was a close friend of hers, and she was elated when B’nai Torah gave the Melton School a home. Jo studied Hebrew and became a Bat Mitzvah in 1997. She attends many of our classes and lectures, and her thirst for knowledge is an important aspect of her synagogue connection.

Jo believes in giving back and has assumed leadership roles from a young age. Most recently, she became a co-chairperson for B’nai Torah’s upcoming L’Chaim Torah Writing project which will ritualize our emergence from the pandemic together, as a community. By writing a Sefer Torah together, B’nai Torah will commemorate this historic event expressing gratitude and celebrating reunion. We are so appreciative of Jo’s active engagement and support of this meaningful effort.

Jo warmly reflects on time spent with her grandmother who loved to bake challah. A notable memory is of her grandmother joyfully forcing a loaf into her arms and saying, “Take this to our neighbor, it’s a mitzvah!” The important meaning of mitzvah was instilled by her grandmother at a young age, and to this day, the light of Ner Tamid shines brightly through Jo’s generous heart. We are so grateful to Jo for the kindness and generosity of this endowment helping to ensure that B’nai Torah will continue to thrive for generations to come.

May you go from strength to strength.

MEN’S CLUBWhen you ask your friends and family what their favorite Jewish Holiday is, I’m sure that you will hear a wide array of answers. While most under the age of 18 will undoubtedly say “Hanukkah”, I am always surprised by the number of people who say that it’s Pesach. I have always viewed Passover as the holiday that was the least convenient, required the most work to prepare for, and most took me out of my routine. I get the point that Pesach is supposed to be different from all other holidays but it still has never been my favorite.

As I now reflect on our second Pesach with little or no friends or family sharing our table, the importance and appeal of the holiday has become much more apparent. While we usually do spend time with family during other chags, it definitely is not the same quality and quantity time as Passover. It’s a holiday steeped in generations of family traditions; traditions that have melded, merged, and blended over the years and it give us the opportunity to create new ones ourselves. The need for human in-person connection has never been in dispute but over the last year, it has become more apparent than ever. Email, phone, or Zoom are not enough. We need each other. I miss being at B’nai Torah, seeing your faces, and being a part of our shared religious experience. I cannot wait until we are all together again.

The Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC), the international umbrella organization under which

our Club is a member, has done a phenomenal job of keeping clubs and their members engaged. Many of our programs, including the Yellow Candles and the World Wide Wrap were created by our partner clubs and promoted through the FJMC. Over the past year, the FJMC has put on countless seminars that have covered topics that include, cooking, genealogy, sports, finance, and more and they continue today. I cannot recommend enough that you visit FJMC.org to see all that they have to offer.

While I’m on the topic of FJMC programs, this year we are going to try something a little different when it comes to our Yellow Candle program. While we usually distribute the candles after Shabbat services in the weeks leading up to Yom Ha Shoah, that just can’t happen this year. We’ve set up a website where you can make your Yellow Candle donation and we will be scheduling a candle distribution day for those of you who donate prior to Yom HaShoah which begins the evening of April 7th. While the suggested donation is $18, we will gladly accept any donation up to and beyond that amount; for donations of $36 or more, we will send the candle to you. Monies generated by this program will go Holocaust education for our local community. Please visit www.btcboca.org/yellowcandle2021 to make your Yellow Candle donation today!

A Zissen Pesach!

WOMEN’S LEAGUEThe pandemic has changed the way we have operated in an unprecedented way. We have shown how resilient we can be by continuing our programming and managing to stay “together while apart.” I extend my appreciation to our wonderful clergy and dedicated staff for their support during this challenging time. My sincere thanks to our devoted volunteers for getting comfortable with the Zoom format in order to offer opportunities for learning and socializing. We had a beautiful and meaningful Women’s League Shabbat with more than 300 zoom connections. Our rabbis were flexible in allowing our women to participate in the entire service, including the Torah Service, from our homes. Cantor Fishman enhanced the service with melodies selected especially for us. Mike Vernof was in control of the connections so that everyone was spotlighted at the appropriate time. Our guest speaker, Dr. Christine Hayes, was outstanding, both on Saturday morning, as well for a teaching session on Saturday afternoon, all from her residence at Yale University. Thank you to Claire Zimmers for organizing, and Mazel Tov to our Honoree, Shelly Gross. Yasher Kochachem to everyone! Our Torah Fund Event was held remotely, and it was just as gratifying as last year’s event in person. We were addressed by the Chancellor, Dr. Shuly Rubin Schwartz, and a most impressive JTS Rabbinical Student, Ben Perlstein. We heard accolades from Rabbi Steinhardt as well as

Jeanette Brownstein, Florida Region Torah Fund VP. Cantor Fishman performed beautiful and inspiring songs to round out the morning. Many thanks to Shula Fleischer for organizing, Claire Zimmers for moderating the conversation with our speaker, and once again to Mike Vernof for his Zoom expertise. Mazel Tov to our Honorees, Abbie Statsky-Frank and Irene Sholk. Our Book Club sessions led by Corina Waldman, have been well attended. Authors have joined our discussions. Book Exchanges that follow Covid-Safe guidelines are held outdoors. We continue to participate in Mitzvah projects with Summer Faerman and TLC. Our members collect items for the Jacobson Family Food Pantry, and we keep the growing number of Little Free Food Pantries well stocked. We held a “Give One - Get One” jewelry-making “crafternoon!” We learned to make bracelets with an artist and sent jewelry to girls in the SOS Foster Village. A representative of the Foster Village also joined to tell us how we can help in other ways. We continue to take virtual trips, have film discussions, and Rosh Chodesh Healing Circles. Please watch your emails for details about our programs. The bright side is that families and friends may participate remotely, whether in Florida or out of town. Best wishes to you and your loved ones for a healthy and meaningful Pesach. Roseanne Sopher , WLBTC President
