MIXED NUMBERS

• A Mixed Number indicates the sum of a whole number and a fraction. A number like 11/3 is an example of a mixed number.

• 1 1/3 = 1 + 1/3

Improper Fraction

• If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fractions are called improper fractions.

• Mixed Numbers can written as improper fraction.

Since the mixed number is greater than 4, draw 5 models that are divided into 6 equal sections to show sixths. Then shade four wholes and one sixth.

Mixed Numbers as Improper Fractions

• Multiply the whole number and the denominator. Then add the numerator

• 6 ½ = (6 x 2) + 1 = 13

Improper Fractions as Mixed Fractions

• Improper fractions can also be written as mixed numbers. Divide the numerator by the denominator.

• Example: 18

Review

• A mixed number indicates the sum of a whole number and a fraction

• If the numerator is greater than the denominator, then the fraction is called improper fraction.

• To convert a mixed number into improper fraction, multiply the whole number and denominator and to the product add the numerator.

• To convert an improper fraction into a mixed fraction, divide the numerator by the denominator and use the remainder as the numerator of the fraction.
