A Polite Request to All Participants

Participants are requested to arrive in a timely fashion for all addresses. Presenters are reminded that the

time slots should be divided fairly and equally by the number of presentations, and that they should not

overrun. The session chair is asked to assume this timekeeping role and to summarize key issues in each

topic.

Certificate

Certificate of Presentation or Certificate of Attendance

A certificate of attendance includes participant’s name and affiliation, certifying the participation in the

conference. A certificate of presentation indicates a presenter’s name, affiliation and the paper title that

is presented in the scheduled session.

Certificate Distribution

Oral presenters will receive a certificate of presentation from the session chair after their presentations

or at the end of the session. Poster presenters will receive a certificate of presentation from the

conference staff at the end of their poster session.

The certificate of presentation will not be issued, either at or after the conference, to authors whose

papers are registered but not presented. Instead, the certificate of attendance will be provided after the

conference.

All presentation rooms are equipped with a screen, an LCD projector, and a laptop computer installed

with Microsoft PowerPoint. You will be able to insert your USB flash drive into the computer and

double check your file in PowerPoint. We recommend you to bring two copies of the file in case that

one fails. You may also connect your own laptop to the provided projector; however please ensure you

have the requisite connector.

Abstract

The events sector of the tourism industry is young, dynamic, growing, and maturing at rapid

rate. From its origin in North America and Europe, it is now a truly global sector of the tourism

industry. The benefits of events management is increasingly being realized by many countries

especially in Asia.

The overriding purpose of this study was to identify the international best practices on events

management that will serve as a point of reference in the development of strategic framework

for events management sector in the Philippines and eventually in the Asia Pacific Region.

There is no agreed strategic framework to guide the management of large-scale events and

consequently a framework has not been tested until today. However, the author attempted to

come up with a framework based on the international best practices on events management

from highly developed six (6) countries (Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Canada, UK, and

USA). Among these countries, UK had the most number of international best practices related

to events management. Undoubtedly, UK is widely recognized as a leader in the events field

and being regarded as international benchmark for best practices in this sector.

The adoption of the Strategic Framework for Events Management Sector will seek to meet the

updating needs of events managers and coordinators. It will provide a relevant standard for

events management that will attempt to measure excellence in event planning, organizing, and

management.

Brief Introduction of Dr. Karen Fernandez

Dr. Karen Miranda-Fernandez is an Associate Professor and Head in the College of Hotel,

Restaurant, and Tourism Management of Imus Institute of Science and Technology in the

Philippines. She is also a visiting professor in three campuses of Olympia College in

Malaysia; Sahid Tourism Institute of Surakarta and Bandung Institute of Tourism both in

Indonesia; four universities in Thailand namely, Maha Sarakham University, Naresuan

University, North Bangkok University, and Burapha University International College; and

Ming Chuan University in Taipei, Taiwan.

She is a postdoctoral scholar at School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality in Leeds Beckett

University, United Kingdom. She holds a doctoral degree in Business Management

specialized in Hospitality Management and master’s degree in Business Administration major

in Hotel and Restaurant Management both earned at Philippine Women’s University, Manila.

Her research interests include hospitality management, tourism and destination management,

events management, human resource management, and marketing. She has participated and

presented research papers in a number of international academic conferences held in Taiwan,

Dubai, USA, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, and United

Kingdom. Her research paper on Attitudes and Perceptions of Filipino Students towards

Study Abroad Program in the United States has been presented at Harvard University,

Cambridge Massachusetts, USA in May 2013.

She is the book author of “Guide to Event Management’s Best Practices” published in

Germany and available for online purchase through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and AbeBooks.

Dr. Fernandez has served as committee chair in the 1st International Conference on Tourism’s

Role in Sustainable Community Development held at Camp Benjamin, Cavite, Philippines; and

as session chair in the International Conference on Tourism and Marketing Management held

at Hyatt Regency in Osaka, Japan and in the International Journal of Arts and Sciences

Conferences respectively held at the Harvard University Campus in Massachusetts, USA and

University of London Union in London, United Kingdom. She is the editor-in-chief of the

International Journal of Tourism and Sustainable Community Development; an active member

of the Scientific and Technical & Editorial Review Board on Business and Management

Engineering of World Academy of Science, Engineering, and Technology (WASET) based in

Connecticut, USA; International Review Committee of SICASE and International Journal of

Business and Information (IJBI) both based in Taipei, Taiwan; Journal of Tourism, Hospitality,

Abstract

Cryopreservation is defined as the preservation of biological materials under an extremely low

temperature (usually liquid nitrogen; -1960C) for indefinite time period. It is considered the

only method for establishing a base (long-term) collection of plant germplasm, in a genebank,

especially for the recalcitrant and semi-recalcitrant seeds crops and those, which are

vegetatively propagated. The method offers certain desirable features including preservation

for unlimited time period, retainment of genetic constitution of materials preserved, low cost

maintenance, minimum space, and production of virus free plantlets upon recovery.

Studies on protocol development for cryopreservation has started around 78 years ago utilizing

slow freezing or step-wise freezing method, in which the biological materials are exposed to

gradually reducing temperature, each for certain period of time, followed by immersion into

liquid nitrogen when the temparature reached -400C (super cooling). The main success in

protocol development, however, was achieved around late 1980’s and early 1990’ with the

development of rapid freezing methods or vitrification based methods accompanied by

formulation of plant vitrification solutions (PVS). With the use of the rapid freezing methods,

namely vitrification (Langis et al., 1989; Uragami et al., 1989), encapsulation/dehydration

(Dereuddre et al., 1990) and droplet (Schaefer-Menuhr et al., 1994), cryopreservation has since

been incorporated into rutine activities of germplasm collection and maintenance.

Protocol development for yams, in this study, was successful through a modified droplet

method, in which, dehydration of the explants was accomplished using PVS2 solution

(vitrification) while freezing was done with the help of aluminium foil (droplet). In addition,

the source of explants were treated with a three weeks cold acclimation in an alternating day

and night temperature prior to exposure to cryopreservation protocol. Shoot recovery rate of 30

to 50 percent was obtained for Dioscorea cayenensis, Dioscorea bulbifera and Dioscorea

polystachya (Leunufna and Keller, 2003;2005).

To understand the changing in cell ultra structures as a result of protocol application, samples

from each step of the protocol were observed under transmission electron microscope (TEM).

The results indicated the occurance of alterations in the cell ultrastructures such as vacuole,

amyloplast, and other cell organeles at every step of protocol application. Mode and period of

recovery were also studied under scanning electron microscope (SEM). The survival of the

explants in the form of axillary shoot development, swelling of the original leaf primordium

and bumb at the axil of leaf primordium can be observed at 3 days after rewarming.

Differentiation of tissue into shoot formation from previosly developed green structure of

cryopreserved explants was observed at 16 days after rewarming (Leunufna, 2004).

Although, cryopreservation is assumed not to alter the genetic constitution of preserved

biological materials, the materials recovered from cryopreservation still have to be evaluated

for their genetic consistency since the whole steps of the protocol involve the use of

cryoprotectants, stressful conditions as well as tissue culture procedures which possibly cause

alteration in genetic materials. This study indicated that the protocol developed did not alter the

in vitro multiplication rate, certain morphological characters and pot yield of cryopreserved

yams (Dioscorea spp.).

Brief Introduction of Dr. Semuel Leunufna

Semuel Leunufna MSc., PhD is an Associate Professor at the Pattimura University Ambon

Maluku, Indonesia, lecturing on Biodiversity and Conservation, Plant Genetics and Plant

Breeding courses. He is also the director of the “Center for the Conservation of Maluku’s

Biodiversity”. During his early career he was appointed as a research staff member of the

project “Crop Potentials of Underexploited Tuberous Yams and Aroids”, a joint project

between United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Pattimura

University Ambon, doing survays and taxonomic studies on Yams (Dioscorea spp.). During

1988-1989 he worked as an adjunct lecturer at the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), Bogor,

lecturing on Mendelian Genetics and researching on the Cytogenetics of Chili peppers. Dr.

Leunufna received his MSc degree from the Department of Crop Science (Ontario Agriculture

College-OAC), University of Guelph, Guelph Ontario, Canada in Plant Breeding under the

scholarship of Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Before completing his

PhD. degree under the scholarship of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) he

attanded an eleven months advanced training program on “The Utilization of Plant Genetic

Resources as a Contribution to Food Security” in Germany funded by Deutsche Stifftung fuer

Internationale Entwicklung (DSE). His Doctorate research on, in vitro maintenance and

cryopreservation of yams (Dioscorea spp.), was completed at the Institute for Plant Genetics

and Crop Plant Research (IPK) Gatersleben, Germany and was promoted at the Martin Luther

Universitaet Halle-Wittenberg, Halle-Saale, Germany. After completing one year position as a

research staff member at the IPK Gatersleben, he returned to the Pattimura University,

Indonesia. A great number of publications have been accomplished by Dr. Leunufna either in

the journals, proceedings of conferences, magazines and news papers. As well, he has given
