David Robinson: I am an undergraduate at Concordia and I have been volunteering at the People’sPotatosinceSeptember.IgottoMontrealthisyearandthePeople’sPotatowasoneofthefirstthingsIgot involved inat theuniversity.Since then, Ihavego\enmore involvedandamon theboardof thePeople’sPotatowhereIvolunteerfour(4)%mesaweek.ItisoneofmyfavouritethingsaboutMontrealandIwouldliketosayafewthingsaboutmyvolunteerexperienceandwhatagreatandintegralpartofConcordiathisis.TheservicethatthePeople’sPotatoprovidesisnotjustaveganmealorfreelunch,butmorethanthat.Itisanalterna%vemodelforfoodprac%cesandculturesforsocietyingeneralinthatit

offers free food without discrimina%on. It is a unique example of community and food sharing, andprovidingforothersisoneofthemoreessen%alwaysofcrea%ngacommunityandcoalescingasgroup.Asasymbol,foodsharingispowerfulanditisoneofthemostprimallygoodthingsthatyoucando.Asasymbol, free food giving is quite a beau%ful thing. I benefit not only in sa%sfying the urges of mystomach,but I have learneda lot. I havebecomepartof thePeople’sPotato community,madegoodfriendsandlearnedalotnotjustaboutmakingfood.EventhoughIhavelearnedprepara%ontechniquesandcookingtechniqueswhichhelp inmypersonal life, Ihavealso learnedabut freeandopenspacesand thePeople’sPotato is amazing in that it creates anopen space inwhichpeople feel comfortablecoming and sharing. The People’s Potato is totally non-judgmental and a space in which I think thatpeople are comfortable sharing and being themselves. It has improvedmy cooking, taughtme aboutseasonalfoodandlocalfoodandthewaysinwhichyoucanconsumeinalessenvironmentallyimpacWulway.ThePeople’sPotato teaches theirvolunteersandcommunityabout thesekindsofprac%ces,andthisisareallybeneficialthinginasocietywhichover-consumestoanexcessivedegree.PlaceslikethePeople’sPotatowhichareteachingaboutalterna%veconsump%onmethodsarereally importantandahugebenefitofthemis learningaboutthealterna%vemodesofconsump%on.It isaspaceinwhichatleast 400 people per day come to eat ameal composed of food from food banks and sourceswhichotherwise would waste that food. They are not only providing, but using a surplus of food whichotherwisewouldgotowaste.ThelastcheesypointthatIwanttomakeisthatthePeople’sPotatohastaughtmea lotaboutworking inateamandbeingveryaccommoda%ngandworking inawaythat isorganizedandnon-hierarchical.ItisinspiringtoseethatdespitetherebeingnodirectchainofcommandatthePeople’sPotatoandnooneinaposi%onofauthority,everyonekindoflistensandistheretohelpout. Inconclusion, thePeople’sPotato representsalterna%ve foodprac%ces thatarekindofessen%al.Weneedtostart learningtoconsumeresponsibly.This isareallygreatplaceandasocialcommunity,andpeoplegotheretohangwithfriends,eatadeliciousmealandhaveachat.
LorraineDonald: I amherewithMelanie, our board president,who came to offer support.Wehaveneveraskedforsuchabiggrantsoweareallabitnervous.Wearecomingtoyouguystodaytoaskforagrantbecausewehavespentsixteen(16)yearsintheseventhfloorNorthsidewiththewindows,andourkitchenisbeingforcedtomovetomakeroomfortheupcomingStudentSuccessCentre,whichwilltakeovertheNorthandEastpor%onsofseventhflooroftheHallbuilding.ThisisgreatfortheStudentSuccess Centre to merge all of its ac%vi%es, but we lose our beau%ful view of the mountain. Theuniversitywillaccommodateusinanewspace,butweareresponsibleforcertainfeesandpurchases.Weareheretoaskyouguysforjustunder$22000totransi%onintothisnewspacesmoothly.Wehavebeenaroundsince1999ata%mewhenConcordiawasgoingthroughsometurbulentpoli%cal%mesandsomeof the ini%al founderswanted toaddress someof thepoli%csbydoingsomethingconcreteandhands-on,anddecidedtocookfoodinthechurchonSherbrookeandwheelittoReggie’s.Withinweeks,theywereserving100mealsperday.Eventuallyweoccupiedtheseventhfloorspaceandwehavebeenthere for sixteen (16) years. In termsof the servicesoffered, there is the lunch servicewhich iswhateveryoneknowsusfor.Weserve400mealsadaywhicharevegan,sonomeat,nodairyandnonutstoreachouttothemostpeoplepossible.Two(2)daysaweekarewheat-freeaswell.Whenyoudothecalcula%ons,weareservingabout35000mealsperyearbetweenthefallandwintersemesters. Ididthemaththree%mes,butreallyitisthis.Thisisfree,bydona%on,paywhatyoucan,nooneisrefused.Someotherthingsthatwedoareeduca%onalworkshops,aboutadozenperyear,todiscussfoodpoli%csandhands-oncookingskills.Theyareopento10-15peopleata%meandarecompletelyfree.Wedonotthinkthatthereshouldbebarrierstoaccessingfoodandwedoworkshopsaboutthingsliketemporary

foreignworkersinourfieldsandprisonfood.Weteachstudentshowtomakesimplethingslikeburgersandmorecomplex likekombucha.Wehaveafoodbankwhichisuniquebecausestudentsfaceaccessbarrierssincegenerallytheyarenotpoorenough,andwehad eighteen(18)foodbanksthisyearandwereabletoreachouttoabout2100people.Thisfoodweinpartpurchaseandinpartusedona%onsfromMoissonMontréal, where we get a lot of our food. We have food boxes on campus and in apartnership withMoissonMontréal, anyone can order a box of fruits and vegetables. These are notorganic,butit isanamazingdeal.WehaveourgardenandmaybeherelongerthanCityFarmSchool.WecanstayconnectedtovolunteersoverthesummerandexpandedthespacethatwearesharingwithCityFarmSchool, growingalmostenoughorganicgarlic togetus through theyear froma$600grantfrom the Sustainability Ac%on Fund (SAF).We offer volunteering opportuni%es and we host about adozenschoolsfromaroundMontrealandopenourdoorstoa lotofstudentswithmobility issuesandlearningdifficul%eslikefolksfromGiantStepsSchoolforadultswithau%sm.Itisamazingthatstudentshereandfromthisschoolgettogetherandworkontheseprojects.WeareherebecausewearemovingandsinceSeptemberwehavebeeninnego%a%onswiththeuniversity.Wepanickedandgotscaredthatouropera%onswouldbeshutdown.Weareafeelevyandhaveacertainmandatetofeedstudentssowewerenervousaboutwhatwouldhappen.Wehadmanyroundsofdiscussionssayingthatwemighthavetostopservingforayearorscaledownouropera%onsandthereisnowaythatwecouldexplainthis to the community. Ajer a few more rounds of nego%a%ons, the administra%on decided tobreakdownthecompleteoverhauloftheseventhfloorintotwo(2)stages,meaningthatwewillnotmissasingeday.Thefirstphaseisbuildinganewkitchenandwewillbeoccupyingthecentreblockinfrontoftheelevatorsbehindtheescalators.Thiswillberepairedforus,thentheywillmoveus,thenworkontherestof the seventhfloor. Itwill be a tough coupleof yearswith the construc%onand corridorsbeingclosedoff.This is abitof a forcedmovebutwearekindofhappybecausewewillbeable todesigncertainfeaturesofthenewspace.Accessissuperimportanttous.Ourcurrentkitchenisnottoobad,but thiskitchenwillbewheelchairaccessible.Ourcookingspace isnotwheelchairadaptable.Weareaskingthatinthenewdesign,thedoorsbeeasytoopen,alongwiththedrawersandcupboardsaswell.Lightswitchesshouldbeeasytogettoaswell.Thekitchenis alsonotup-to-codesinceit isformthe1960s,sowewillfix,surpass,accommodate,welcomeandthensome.Weareaskingforalmost$22000togotowardsadishwasher,ourbiggestpurchase,ergonomicofficeequipmentandkitchenequip,alongwithreplacingold%redequipment.Thedishwasheristhebiggestpurchaseat$10000andweoptedforasuperefficientmodel. Ituses three (3) litresofwaterper load,which isvery li\lewater,alongwithvery fewchemicalsandelectricityas it is two (2)minutesper cycle.We liked thepriceandcouldgetextra rebates because we are a soup kitchen and it will fit our needs.We are also asking for officeequipment likechairs.Wespendabout175hours lugging, lijing,pullingandchopping,andallofourofficeequipmenthasbeenappropriatedfromthebasementoftheHallbuilding.Ourbodiesaresoreandwehavenoergonomicsupport.Inthekitchenwearealsoaskingforsomepriceyequipmentlikeafoodprocessorworth$5000,butagainthisistohelpussaveourlimbsandhelpsomeofthestudentworkerstointegrateintothekitchen.Noteveryonecanchop,butusingafoodprocessorhelpseveryonebeabletowork.Differentpeoplehavedifferentneedsandneed tohold thingsdifferentlyand it isnice tobeable to accommodate this. We are also asking for some refreshers in terms of busing bins to holdvegetablesandgrainsandbeans,alongwithshelving.Rightnowourhealthandsafety inspec%onsarealways phenomenal because our kitchen is being judged by 1960s standards. In the new kitchen,inspectorswillexpectus tobeup-to-codewith2016-2017standardsandsoweareasking for certainequipment to be refurbished. Our percolator is sixteen (16) years old and so is our hot caddy totransportfood.Weareexcitedaboutkitchen,though itwillbeatoughtwo(2)yearsworkingthrough

theconstruc%on.Overtheshort termwhiletherenova%onsaregoingon,wehaveotherchallenges–freshvegetableshavegoneupinpriceby25%overthepastyearandourvehiclewasrecentlystolen.Werealizethatwealsoneedtoputasidesomemoneyforsurprisecostswhichmightcomeupthroughouttheconstruc%on.Thisisaaboutmaintainingourlevelofservicesintermsofqualityandquan%ty.
AdrianLongino7: Iwant to thankyou forcomingand Iampre\ysure that I canspeak foreveryonewhen I say that thePeople’s Potatodoesnot only have aposi%ve impact onConcordia, but they aregreat for the community and compared to other projects that the CSU has funded in the past andcurrently,thisisnotalargeamountofmoneythattheyareaskingfor.

LorraineDonald: Yes.Wefigured thatwewere asking for somuchmoney thatwehad topresent it.Thereisnothingterriblyformalintheslideshowgoingon,butjustacollec%onofwhatisgoingoninthekitchen.
GabrielleCaron:WHEREAS theSSAELC fundcanbeused for the crea%onandexpansionofpredominantlystudent-run food systems projects on campus, and the CSU has a posi%on to ac%velysupportaffordable,sustainable,andstudent-runfoodservice;WHEREASThePeople’sPotatohasbeenastudent-ini%atedfoodsystemsprojectsince1999toaddressstudentpovertythatoffersdona%onmealsonadailybasisandarecommi\edtotheeduca%onofhealthycooking,foodpoli%cs,andsocialandenvironmentaljus%ce;WHEREASConcordiaUniversitywillbecontribu%ngalargepor%onoftheconstruc%oncostfor the development of a kitchen on the seventh (7th) floor of the Hall building for ThePeople’s Potato opera%ons, and that this kitchen will further the development of thestudentrunfoodsystemoncampus;BEITRESOLVEDTHATanamountof$21,938.55beexpensedfromtheSSEALCbeapprovedforthePeople’sPotatoHallseventh(7th)floorkitchendevelopment.

MarionMiller:Thisispre\ystraighWorward–twoandahalfyearsgo,wehiredanarchivist-historiantosorthough411boxesthattheCSUhadsincethebeginningofConcordiaUniversityandevenearlierthanthat. Our archivist Cassandra sorted through them for two and a half years and completed a certainsec%onofhistoryandrealizedthatalotofstuffcouldbeshredded,likefinancialrecordsolderthanfive(5)yearsold.TherearealotofthingsthatperhapswedonotneedtokeepintheCSUofficesasrelevantarchivesbutcanbegiventothelargerarchivesatConcordiaUniversity.ThosedocumentsthenbecomefiledandeasiertoconsultbecauseConcordiaalreadyhasseteverythingup.Ifwekeepthese411boxes,theywill sit thereandwillbehard to consult,whereas ifwegivea sec%onof themto theConcordiaArchives,wes%llhaveaccesstothemandConcordiatakescareofsor%ngandfilingthemsoagreaternumberofpeoplewillhaveaccesstothem.Iwillnowgooverthesec%onsofthedona%onagreement.The documents that we are dona%ng are not secrets or of ins%tu%onal importance, but might beinteres%ngtoreference.Wewouldtransfertherights,%tlesandinterestofthedocumentstoConcordia.TheownershipandpropertywouldbetransferredtoConcordiaandifthereisanythingtheydonotthinkhasvaluetheywillletusknowbeforetheythrowitout.Theywillprocessthedocumentsandseewhichonesareacceptableinaccordancewiththearchivalprocess.Ifweeverwantcopiestheywillgiveustwohundred(200)freephotocopiesorfive(5)scans.Wewillhaveunrestrictedaccessandreproduc%onofthedocuments given. If thedocuments havepersonal or confiden%al informa%on, theywill use goodprac%cestoarchivetheminthewaythattheyneedtobe.Theywillreleaseournameandsaythatwedonated them. There is a sec%on on copyright and we propose a royalty-free copyright on thedocuments.Wehavetheop%ontosaythatbeyondConcordiausingthemweretainthecopyrightandeveryonehastocheckinwithusbutIproposethatwegrantroyalty-freelicenseforanyonewhowantstoreproducethemorshowthem.ThereasonIproposethisisbecauseIdonotthinkthattheCSUhasamamazingamountofdocumentstosellforcopyright,thoughtherearesomeinteres%ngdocumentstosharewiththepublic.Forexample,therewasadocumentaryabouttheninthfloorcomputer labriotsand unfortunately our photos and things were in these 411 boxes. It would have been cool if thedocumentaryfilmmakerscouldhaveaccessedthisandthatiswhyweareproposingtheversionthatiscopyright-freeIntheglobalpictureweshouldseeourselvescontribu%ngtothewealthofinforma%ononstudent associa%ons in Quebec. It will not be advantageous to hold the copyrights. In terms of theliabili%es, no one is liable regarding things arising from the documents, and this comes into effect assoon as the contract is signed. This was looked over by the archivist and the Academic CampaignsresearcherGeneand theydida thorough job looking through theclauses.Therearenotanyamazingsecretsinthedocumentsbutthereareinteres%ngthings.Weshouldnotbetooworriedaboutwhatwearedona%ngtoConcordia.

MarionMiller:Shehasdoneathoroughjobuptoabout1992,thenthereistheperiodof%mewheretheCSUstartstothinkaboutbecomingaccreditedaround2002-2003.SheisinthatgapperiodbetweenwhentheCSUbecomestheCSU.Wehaveamoredetailedbreakdowndowntownwheresheshowswhatwasineachbox.Shehasskimmedthroughmostoftheboxessosheknowsgenerallywhatisinthem.She also hasmade a progress report.What is neat is that her %tle is archivist-historian sowhen herarchivist jobismoreundercontrol, itwillbereallyadvantageousforhertobeusedasahistorianandhelpproducepamphletseriesandthings.
