Academic Opportunities The AAST majors program is a two-year opportunity for students that pairs rigorous instruction with hands-on training and internships in the community. Students apply to attend AAST during their last two-years of high school by choosing one of the many career majors offered at AAST. The majors available to students include: Advanced Art, Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Science, Clean Energy, Computer Science, Entertainment Technology, Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Informatics, Innovations in STEM, with Core Engineering, Networking, Pre-Medicine, and Web and Digital Communications. At AAST, students apply rigorous academic content while acquiring the skills necessary for success in their chosen career paths. Students attend AAST to pursue individual interests, participate in experiences such as work-based learning, and to earn industry valued credentials necessary for college and career readiness. AAST is a nationally recognized and accredited STEM School (2021 Cognia certification) with a 27-year history of guiding students toward achieving career dreams and realizing their possibilities. AAST integrates the Profile of a SC Graduate within all of its College Prep, Honors, and AP level courses in every academic area. The programs of study offer accelerated learning options which include: AP Art Studio 2D & 3D & Drawing, AP English Literature and Language, AP Calculus AB & BC, AP Statistics, AP Physics, AP US Government, AP Microeconomics, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Environ- mental Science, AP US History, AP European History, AP Human Geogra- phy, AP Principles of Computer Science, AP Psychology, and AP Capstone Seminar & Research. ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS Students interested in AAST major programs may apply online via the Horry County Schools website in their 10th grade year to attend AAST for their 11th and 12th grade years. If accepted, students will be notified in writing. Students must adhere to the district’s deadline dates for application submission and return acceptance agreements. Due to the requirements of the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology program, students must attend classes on the campus of the brick-and- mortar school to participate. ACTIVITIES AT AAST Athletics: Since AAST is a program school, students may participate in extracurricular and athletic opportunities at their base high school, if that same opportunity is not offered at AAST. Fine Arts: The Advanced Art Major is a two-year program designed for juniors and seniors interested in studying art at an advanced level. Students in this program will produce art in one of the largest art studios in the state. They will learn to interpret, analyze, evaluate, and discuss their own work while also developing the ability to adapt and apply skills while recognizing the important influence of the visual arts in our daily lives. AAST also has electives for technical theatre and performing arts. ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS & RECOGNITIONS:• AAST received Cognia STEM certification renewal• 100% of all senior students met college or career ready criteria• 83% of all senior students met college AND career criteria• 96% of all senior students earned silver or higher on the WIN National Career Readiness assessment• 83% of CTE seniors were completers in their major • 100% of CTE seniors earned a professional credential • 100% of Pre Med seniors received the OSHA 10 credential• 65% of Pre Med seniors received their EKG credential• 100% of students who took the Microburst Softskills Exam received the credential • AAST seniors exceed the 2020 national mean composite score with an 1168 average for the SAT• AAST maintained 84.4% pass rate for AP exams • AAST offered 16 AP courses in 2021 and 365 AP exams were administered• AAST Art Program earned recognition in events around the region including the juried competition at the South Carolina State Fair, Burroughs and Chapin Art Museum and ArtFields Jr.• AAST Computer Science Senior won Technology Champion of the Waccamaw Region• AAST Pre Engineering Senior was selected to participate in the SC STEM signing day• The Technology Students Association (TSA) chapter at AAST had 10 students winning state level competitions qualifying to compete at the national level. Out of 100 entries across the U.S., AAST ended up finishing in 3rd place nationally in digital video production• The Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) chapter at AAST had 6 students winning state level competitions qualifying to compete at the national level• AAST had a 2021 National Merit Semi Finalist
