Public Transportation
Rickshaws
Rickshaws are easily found in Chittagong. The seats are small but two people can share one
comfortably. They are ubiquitous and inexpensive.
CNGs
CNGs are larger and faster than rickshaws. Their name comes from the compressed natural gas they
use as a fuel source. Three people can share one comfortably. Empty CNGs are sometimes harder to
find than rickshaws, especially during rainy weather. The ride from the AUW building to Panchlaish
Apartment is 25-30 taka.
Local City Bus
There are mini-buses and long buses in Chittagong, but it is not recommended to take them as there
are no set bus stops and the routes are vague. If you do decide to use this kind of local transport, know
that front seats are usually reserved for women; people will get up to give you their seat.

Incidentals
Infant & Child Information
Disposable diapers are easy to buy here at many shops. Pampers and Huggies are available; some
faculty have liked the Molfix brand. Diapers are not insanely expensive. They cost more than in the
US, but the price is not prohibitive. For cloth diapers: washing machines work well and have a 90
degrees Celsius setting for sanitation.
To shop all the baby stuff you can go to Kids Camp (Dampara beside Dhaba), baby food can be found
in Kamal Store (GEC circle) Khulshi Mart and Agora.
Cell Phones & Calling
International phone calls
Faculty/staff can give out their cell phone number to international family and friends, as there is no
charge for receiving phone calls. You can also use your cell phone to call internationally, although
this can be very expensive. To do these dial 012+international country code + area code +
number. Link for making international phone calls
You can also use internet programs like Skype to call internationally. Skype works best late at night
and early in the morning.
AUW SIM cards and recharging
If you are AUW faculty, SIM cards are provided by AUW and come with taka credit. Mobiles used
for professional work purposes will be recharged TK 300 by the first week of every month.auw does
expect faculty/staff to make calls in a professional capacity, or otherwise AUW will not pay the tk
300 monthly allowance. If you need to add money to your phone, have a retail specialist do this for
you at a mobile store or Banglalink Point (Customer Care & Service) at Golpahar Circle.

Purchasing cell phones
You have the option of purchasing basic mobiles from the phone store (at Sanmar Ocean City or
Nokia Customer Care center or Grameen Store at Nasirabad, CDA Avenue, near HSBC) for around
2,000 taka (based on availability and market price).
36
Electricity & Electronic Equipment
Bangladesh voltage is 220V. You can purchase multi-plug converters here. Since there are frequent
power outages and power surges, for more expensive electronic equipment, we recommend you
purchase professional surge protectors here. Information regarding buying any products like Belkin
professional surge protectors, printers, scanners, and other equipment can be provided from the AUW
IT Department.

Household Help
Finding a Helper
People can have household helpers in Bangladesh. The best way to find a helper is to ask people who
currently have trustworthy household help. See if their helpers know of other people looking to work.
It is rare to find someone who speaks English, so it's a wise idea to have someone who can translate
with you when you meet the potential helper and negotiate pay.
Pay
The best way to determine what to pay a helper is to ask someone who already has a helper. Helper's
will often have a salary expectation; you can negotiate this when you interview. You can also agree to
increase pay after a certain time (i.e. Increase pay by 500 taka/month after 3 months of satisfactory
performance).
Security
When you hire someone, you should keep their information on file in case of a problem or emergency
(see the “Household Help Information” form below). For security in general, it is advisable you keep
your valuables locked up at all times. It is not recommended you give a key to your helper. Most
people leave their apartment key with security guards, who then let the helpers in.

Packages can be sent via the Bangladeshi postal system; however, this is generally not as reliable as
private carriers and is very slow.
DHL, FedEx, and TNT are available in Bangladesh and are the most reliable for shipping. You can go
directly to DHL, FedEx, or have an office assistant at AUW do this for you. If you do go, it's best to
take someone local with you to translate and to avoid being overcharged.

Receiving
If you are having packages mailed to you, make sure that the sender does not over-estimate the value
of the contents of the box and accurately reports the contents. You are required to pay taxes on all
packages that you receive (except direct mail envelopes). Taxes are determined by the value of the
package’s contents. The customs office will go through every single package that has been sent. It is
also important that breakable objects are wrapped well, as most packages take a beating.
Encourage friends and family back home to avoid sending you packages through UPS, Fed-Ex or
DHL--you may end up paying a large fee to receive the package.

Money
ATMs
There are many ATMs in Chittagong. Most ATMs take Plus/Cirrus debit cards. Be aware there will
be an ATM fee tacked onto your withdrawal. Additionally, your home bank will also charge a fee.
Make sure to inquire at your home bank how much it will cost on their end for you to withdraw
money overseas. Also, before you leave home, make sure you inform your home bank that you will be
traveling overseas.
HSBC ATMs -- The most reliable Banks/ATMs. There is one near GEC Moor.
Dutch Bangla ATM -- About 200 feet down the road from Panchlaish Apartment (take a left).
City ATM -- Near AUW and at the intersection of O.R. Nizam Road and M.M. Ali Road.
BRAC ATM -- About 200 feet down the road from Panchlaish Apartment (take a right).
Bank Accounts
Please contact Md. Monoarul Hoque (Director of Finance) in the AUW Finance Department if you
are interested in setting up an account or if there is any Money Exchanging issue.

Pets
AUW does not permit to have dog(s), or any other pets (other than cats) to be on the premises or
residency, even if temporarily.
Bringing a Pet to Bangladesh "Exporting" a Pet you will need to check your country’s regulations regarding exporting a
pet. Website from the US Government on exporting animals: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/animals/animal_exports.shtml
Link to Pet Relocation Blog: Bangladesh & Pets
"Importing" a Pet into Bangladesh- Dr. Pallab, Veterinarian at the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal
Sciences University, said these are most likely the things you will need to bring a pet into Bangladesh:
Health certificate for the pet (signed by a veterinarian from your country of origin
Vaccinations card (something will have be signed by a veterinarian in your country of origin;
should have an official document stating "cat is free from rabies and infectious and
contagious diseases")
Pet identity card
There may be forms in the Dhaka airport to fill out upon arrival--but overall, Bangladesh doesn't have
any formalized system for bringing pets into Bangladesh. Airport folks will try to charge you approx.
1100 taka as a "customs" fee for bringing a pet into Bangladesh.
Pet Quality of Life & Health Care
One issue to consider in bringing a pet to Bangladesh is the animal's quality of life. If you are an
apartment and have a pet, there may be little to no room to run around outside. Beyond that, there is
little to no grass/open space in Chittagong. It is rare for a family in Bangladesh to keep domestic pets,
so it can be hard to find a veterinarian that deals with cats and dogs. The lack of veterinarian care is
something major to take into account in bringing a pet here.
