It attempts to identify and fill in the critical gaps to empower the disadvantaged and thus enable them to emerge economically independent and socially dignified. Concerns works in 20 pockets of urban slums with 5000 families in Bangalore city. INTRODUCTION:

Concerns Universe Foundation was founded in the year 2001 and is strongly committed to contributing

to the cause of the marginalized in the city of Bangalore. It attempts to identify and fill in the critical

gaps to empower the disadvantaged and thus enable them to emerge economically independent and

socially dignified. Concerns works in 20 pockets of urban slums with 5000 families in Bangalore city.

dignified, dispelling the disparities of caste, class and gender.

MISSION

OBJECTIVES OF CONCERNS

To help the Community to understand the importance of education and to prepare the children of the community to enter

formal schools and perform better academically.

To help women develop outside the domestic environment to train women in health, nutrition, computers, life and other skills

CONCERNS COMMUNITY COLLEGE Girls and young women, who missed opportunities to get education for various reasons, were motivated and enrolled in the Community

College. The community college has just completed its ninth year. Regular attendance was encouraged and the importance of punctuality,

time management and organization were stressed.

Two trades were taught: Diploma in Computing, Accounting & Office Management and Diploma in Early Childhood Care & Education. Both

were integrated with life skills, community health as well as computing and English.

This has led to the women feeling more independent in both their work and home life. The education they have received has empowered

them by building dignity and self-worth.

Concerns Community College 2014-2015

63 students enrolled in June 2014, 50 completed the course

Community college students aspiring to continue their education

The Concerns Community College faculty team motivated the students to do their higher studies. As a result 13 girls joined

Secondary level and 7 girls joined for Senior Secondary level in National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Three students

also have joined Bachelor programs in different universities.

CONCERNS VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE I

Enhancing Employability through Vocational and Skill Development Training among Women, Adolescent Girls and school

dropouts supported, by DELL/CIF

Vocational skills training were provided for children and unemployed youth through computer application training. The aim is to qualify them to be gainfully employed and to earn an income, thus to emerge economically independent and socially dignified.

Totally 196 Students trained in MS office (MS Word, MS Excel & MS Power Point), Touch typing, internet, Photoshop & Tally. x

CONCERNS VOCATIONAL TRAINING II: STITCH CRAFT TUTUCORIN Stitch craft skills training was provided for young women. The aim is to qualify them to be gainfully employed and to earn an income, thus to emerge economically independent and socially dignified.

Future plan: Since there was a request from women to learn computers, three used computer were purchased from Arul systems Chennai in March 2015. Initially 9 women and children started training on Basic computers in three batches by a trained computer teacher.

CUF team conducted different activities like Summer camp , Summer computer class, annual sports meet, health awareness session like

session, Pre-teen health awareness sessions. Tuition children were given opportunity to learn basic computers etc.

COMMUNITY HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

HEALTH PROGRAM

The Concerns team makes regular visits to develop rapport with members of the community. They deliver health programs, and raise

awareness about existing government facilities and services available for the disadvantaged, caring for TB patients, women health

care, and antenatal, and postnatal care facilities. Most community members interact well with CUF team, members of the community

have found appropriate ways to handle issues, share information and help each other, choose and utilize the resources and facilities in

the locality appropriately, and intake of nutritious food has improved, health and hygienic habits, handling health issues in a better

manner. Women use home remedies for minor health problems and young people develop skills, improving employability and

prospects.

Community health education topics: ORS, Cold, fever, worms, TB, measles, ANC, PNC, home remedies, diarrhea, anemia, family planning, personal hygiene, water borne diseases, mosquito borne diseases, burn, children safety, typhoid, jaundice, balance diet, malnutrition, cancer, diabetes, weaning food, , dental care, food poisoning, green gram salad, nutritional deficiency, saving domestic gas, importance of helpline, demo on first aid, communicable diseases, savings, HPM, birth and death certificate, polio etc.

CASE STUDIES

CONCERNS COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2012-2013

Student of Computing, Accounting and Office Management Course

Swathiis 21 years old, completed her II PUC in Kannada medium, she is from Hoodi near White Field. Mother is a dhobi & maid, father

separated from the family for various reason. Mother is the only earning member in the family. Through alumni community colleges

student contact Swathi came to know about CCC and joined Office Management course in June 2014 and travel every day by train, since

she did her studies in Kannada medium initially she found it very difficult to understand English, but she picked up very well. She was

hardworking student , submitted all assignments on time and well. She had lot of challenges in attending community college; her father

sometimes used to come home drunk and trouble them and take away all their money from them. To meet the daily expenses of travelling

and college fees she had to work in a house as a maid in weekends. Now she feels confident planning to start her own business.

Simultaneously she wants to complete her degree. Now she says I can face challenges, very bold in taking decision.

Student of Early Childhood Care and Education

Mammitha is 35 years old, married and the mother of two children. She did not completed SSLC education when she joined teacher

training course in community college; she had the drive and passion to do the course for the simple reason of changing her status and

social dignity of her family circle. She faced many challenges along the way like attending classes regularly and to pay the fees money on

time. She earned her living by running a road side idly shops and has to take care of ailing mother. Added to this she had the problem of

commuting because of lack of connecting bus facility to come to college. In spite of these hardships she didn’t give up on her studies. She

finished all the projects. Record work, teaching practice and completed the course .She enrolled in NIOS for secondary level realizing the

fact it was minimum eligibility to get a teacher job in schools.

We appreciate her hard work and her tremendous will to change her image. Finally she has gotten a job as day care in charge in a preschool

and has fair chance of becoming a nursery teacher next year. Her salary for the job is Rs. 4000/ and she feels happy for working in

stimulating environment with children.

Arathi is 33 years old and a single women living under the custody and support of her brother and aged mother. She has passed her PUC

education. She was entrusted with the responsibility of bringing up her niece due to family circumstances. Even though she was deprived

of many things in her life, she took a decision to change it. Arathi’s friend took the initiative to help her and paid the fees and enrolled her

for the classes in the teacher training program provide by the community college. Initially Arathi found it difficult to mingle and interact

with her class mates. Later on due to the life skill classes she felt good and slowly started building relationships and making friends. Her

understanding of the subjects was good and she completed the course successfully and is currently applying for jobs in schools. She feels

good and confident and is ready to come out of the shell.

Child care centre Janakiram Layout

Saadhaya 6years girl old daughter of Ajaz Khan Naheena Taj from Janakiram layout and the family migrate from Andhra Pradesh. Father

works as an auto driver and mother works as a domestic maid servant. She also has a younger sister. Through community worker

motivation family joined her in our child care centre and since she speaks Urdu it was difficult for the child to coup up. Initially she was

very slow in her studies. Also she was under weight and did not show much interest.

After absorbed the activities conducted in the child care centre, she shown interest and learnt the concepts of child care centre, recite

rhymes, narrate story and respond to simple instruction in English etc. also increase weight. After completing 2years of education in

Concerns child care centre, she attended interview in Chrystal house school and admitted in UKG. The education will be free of cost from

1standard to II PU. The school have appreciated her and wished her for all success. Mother feels happy and she joined her younger

daughter also in Concerns Child care center.

Evening tuition- Janakiram Layout

Mallesamma 11 year’s old girl old daughter of Venkatesh & Kamala From Janakiram layout and the family migrate from North Gulbarga.

Parent’s works as construction worker. She also has 2 brothers. After her preschool she joined Marianiketan School in Kannada medium,

she was a slow learner and it was difficult for her to study in school. She tried to drop from school through community worker motivation

family joined her in Concerns evening tuition. Now she has completed her 4th standard she is doing very well in the school and going to

5th standard. she share with others and discuss also she joined in concerns annual day celebration and did a dance. Family feels very

happy.

Tb patient Janakiram Layout

Munirethna 55years married with 4 children live in janakiram layout, she had chest pain, fever with cold & cough for long, family

members took her to local clinics and they could not identify the disease for 6 weeks. She was not better and referred to Bowring

hospital. There they found that she has affected with TB. The started treatment and she could not continue since she was too weak and

have to travel long way. Through cox town dispensary has referred to Concerns DOT’s centre. She took regular treatment and follow up

was done by Concerns team. Now she has completed her treatment.

28th November 1014, Concerns Universe Foundation celebrated annual day in Marianiketan school community hall. The chief guest Fr.

Xavier Allophones ICRDCE Chennai, Mrs. Hema Hattangady with Overseas volunteer. Released Community College poem book. All

the alumni Community College students, present community college students, CC children, tuition children and CUF team members

participated in cultural program.
