What is Peripheral Device?
is any input or output component that
connects to a computers system unit
Any device connected internally or
externally to a computer and used in the
transfer of data

Arrangement of Data
The arrangement of data with a redundantarray is accomplished with a processknown as disk striping. In layman¶s terms, the storage space on each drive is
sectioned or partitioned into a collection of sectors with the same storage capacity. When new data is entered and saved, thedata saves to the defined sectors on eachdrive involved with the storage strategy. This means that when data is saved on theprimary hard drive, it is simultaneouslysaved on each of the secondary drives.

Optical Discs
-Is a flat, usually circular disc which
encodes binary data in the form of pits
(binary value of 0 or off, due to lack of
reflection when read) and lands (binary
value of 1 or on, due to a reflection
when read) on a special material (often
aluminum)on one of its flat surfaces-Commonly used for storing music,
video, or data and programs for PC

CD-DA(Compact Disc Digital Audio)
-an optical disc used to store digital data
-It was originally developed to store and
playback sound recordings exclusively
-The first CD format was of course thatwhich defined the audio CD used in all
regular CD players

Diagram of CD Layers
A. A polycarbonate disclayer has the dataencoded by using landsand pits.
B. A reflective layer reflects
the laser back. C. A lacquer layer is used
to prevent oxidation
D. Artwork is screenprinted on the top of thedisc.
E. A laser beam reads thepolycarbonate disc, isreflected back, and readby the player.

Types of Optical Disc
CD-ROM (Compact Disc Read- OnlyMemory)
-are identical in appearance to audio
CDs and data are stored and retrieved in avery similar manner (only differing fromaudio CDs in the standards used to storethe data).
-Is a pre-pressed compact disc thatcontains data accessible to, but notwritable by a computer for data storageand music playback

Types of Optical Disc
CD-RW (Compact Disc ReWritable)
- is a rewritable optical disc
- discs require a more sensitive laser
optics

Types of Optical Disc
DVD (Digital-Versatile Disc)
-is an optical disc storage mediaformat
-the same dimension as CD, but iscapable of storing almost seven timesas much data
- DVD is composed of several layersof plastic, totaling about 1.2 millimetersthick. Each layer is created by injectionmolding polycarbonate plastic

DVD Format
Single-sided, Single Layer DVD
- Single-sided, single-layer DVDs can
store about seven times more data than
CDs(4.38 GB )
Single-sided, Double Layer DVD
-(7.95 GB )
Double-sided, Double Layer DVD- hold more than the standard 4.7GB of a
single-sided single layer DVD (15.9 GB )

MPEG (Moving Picture Experts
Group)
-is the name of a family of standards
used for coding audio-visual information
(e.g., movies, video, music) in a digital
compressed format.
- The MPEG compression
methodology is considered asymmetric as the encoder is more complex than
the decoder

Compression classified into two
types Lossless Compression
- In the lossless type of compression, nodata is lost during the compressionprocess. When the compressed file isdecompressed, the result is identical to thedata before compression
Lossy Compression
- Lossy compression reduces file size
by permanently eliminating redundantinformation, so that only a part of theoriginal data is retained and reproduced

Flash Drive
-A USB flash drive consists of a
flash memory data storage device
integrated with a USB(Universal Serial
Bus) interface. USB flash drives aretypically removable and rewritable, and
physically much smaller than a floppy
disk

Advantages of Flash Drive
Flash drives also store data denselycompared to many removable media.
Data stored on flash drives is impervious to
scratches and dust, and flash drives aremechanically very robust making themsuitable for transporting data from place toplace and keeping it readily at hand
Compared to hard drives, flash drives uselittle power, have no fragile moving parts, and for most capacities are small and light.
